Moving from strength to strength: Redline Gear Cleaning’s mission to reduce firefighter cancer risk

Michael Matros, President and Founder of Redline Gear Cleaning spotlights the critical impact of fast turnarounds and keeping gear clean

Michael Matros had a vision- to make clean gear accessible.

After founding Redline Gear Cleaning in 2019, the company have only gone from strength to strength.

In this interview with International Fire and Safety Journal (IFSJ) Assistant Editor Isabelle Crow, Matros discusses the challenges he has fought to overcome and why his mission was always personal.

As Matros puts it: “I knew I had the opportunity to create a change”.

A significant focus of Redline’s is meeting the NFPA 1851 standard, why is maintaining and exceeding these standards essential to your work?

The NFPA 1851 standard is basically our Bible.

In our world, that’s the regulatory agent that decides how gear should be cleaned and handled.

Therefore, we take not just achieving but exceeding the standard incredibly seriously.

We make sure we go above and beyond on every level, even if we are cleaning the gear in a truck and on a mobile platform.

We never use this as an excuse, in fact, it’s a benefit to the business.

What are the biggest challenges you see fire departments and safety teams facing today when it comes to gear maintenance and decontamination and how does Redline address these issues?

Logistics and time are by far the biggest issue.

For a firefighter to send his gear out for a couple of weeks or even months in the worst case, is similar to you not having a computer.

They are completely handicapped as a firefighter and can’t perform their job.

This means people often refuse to send their gear out for cleaning because they don’t have another set or simply just the time.

Firefighter often opt to just reuse dirty gear instead.

The detrimental impact of wearing dirty gear cannot be undermined, this is because of the direct link to an increased risk of cancer for firefighters.

Therefore, being able to handle the logistics of same-day cleaning is essential.


We want to continue to be in a position where we bring the resources to the station, whether that be by educating firefighters on proper gear cleaning or by bringing the cleaning to them.

Our goal has always been to come in and clean everything on-site and have it turned around in three hours.

With conversations only growing surrounding the link between a career fighting fires and occupational cancer, why is playing a role in preventing particulates and contaminants such a personal mission for the company?

Alongside being the Founder and President of Redline, I am still a career firefighter, with 22-years’ experience as a firefighter paramedic.

For me, this business has always been personal.

I launched Redline because I had a nonprofit that focused on cancer prevention in the fire service, I was constantly pushing clean gear from that perspective.

Unfortunately, I have been to too many funerals of people who have passed away from occupational cancer- it is an issue that we just needed to do better on.

It was when my Chief was telling me that the gear that had just been sent off would be several weeks until it returned that I realized the severity of the situation.

What was I going to do without my gear? This was when I began to realize that the logistics of cleaning gear and the reality were two different worlds.

I began asking why we didn’t just have a company come and clean the gear in-house, to which I was told that this did not exist.

In that moment, I knew I had the opportunity to create a change, by putting the cleaning unit into a truck.

It never crossed my mind that I would be in the laundry business, but the need within the fire service was undeniable.

Redline Gear Cleaning was launched in 2019 and we are now opening our 15th location as the fastest growing ISP in the fire service.

The goal for us has always been to remain focused on customer service and offer our clients a simple and easy process.

We are growing so quickly that it can be hard to keep track, at the moment, we are basically putting a new truck on the road about every three months.

Redline is now the official ISP of FDIC, so we work to clean every piece of gear at the show.

It is a fantastic opportunity for us.

 Last year, we had six trucks and this year we will have ten alongside 75 employees- our presence is only growing.


Redline provides rapid response cleaning and a Mobile Extraction Unit. What feedback have you received from departments about the impact of your ability to quickly turnaround clean gear?

Our impact has been critical to fire departments.

It has gotten to the point where a lot of departments have built us into their response cards, they are starting to look to us as much as they do their neighbors for mutual aid assignments.

We’ve even had customers tell us they will purchase anything we offer because it only builds upon their current experience; Redline is becoming their full PPE compliance department.

Rather than just a service, we offer a complete operational change to the department with renowned health and safety benefits.

Regulatory recalibration: Swiss fire regulation moves to risk-based model with BSV 2026

Professor Isabel Engels, Bern University of Applied Sciences, and risk specialist Matthias Schubert, Matrisk GmbH, explain how BSV 2026 embeds proportionality and ALARP

Switzerland is preparing to introduce a revised national fire protection framework under the BSV 2026 project, following a six-year development process involving more than 140 experts from authorities, insurers, fire services, industry and research institutions.

Led by Professor Isabel Engels of Bern University of Applied Sciences and developed in collaboration with risk specialist Matthias Schubert of Matrisk GmbH, the draft regulations establish an explicit risk-oriented foundation for Swiss fire safety, embedding proportionality, defined risk acceptance criteria and the ALARP principle directly into the regulatory structure.

The framework integrates prescriptive, performance-based and risk-based verification within a single methodology, supported by data modelling, international research and harmonised enforcement principles across cantons.

In this exclusive interview with IFSJ, Professor Isabel Engels and Matthias Schubert explain how BSV 2026 was developed, how risk logic now underpins regulatory requirements and what the revised framework could mean for building owners, insurers and fire safety professionals across Switzerland.

Can you summarise the main objectives of the BSV 2026 revision and how it differs from previous Swiss fire protection regulations?

The primary objective of the BSV 2026 revision is to establish an explicit risk-oriented framework as the foundation of Swiss fire safety regulation.

A central element of this shift is the application of the principle of proportionality.

Fire protection measures are required where they are suitable, necessary and reasonable in relation to the level of risk, thereby linking regulatory requirements more directly to their intended safety benefit.

By making the safety rationale behind individual measures explicit, it becomes clearer how and why specific requirements contribute to the protection of people and buildings.

Harmonisation of regulatory enforcement across cantons is another key objective, supporting a more uniform application of fire protection regulations throughout Switzerland.

The BSV 2026 also clearly distinguish between the protection of people and the protection of buildings, anchoring both in explicit risk acceptance criteria, including the ALARP principle, which serves as a reference for decision-making and verification.

While the BSV 2015 were largely prescriptive and contained implicit risk considerations, the BSV 2026 make the underlying safety logic more transparent and structurally embedded in the regulation itself.

A further distinction is the integration of prescriptive, performance-based and risk-based design within a single framework.

Rather than treating these approaches as separate philosophies, they are understood as different levels of analysis within the same risk-oriented process.

The framework is conceptually aligned with international risk management principles and applied across verification methods.

In addition, the BSV 2026 introduce a clearer structure along the lifecycle of a building, from planning and construction to operation and decommissioning, thereby improving clarity of roles and responsibilities.

At the same time, proven elements of the previous framework are retained to ensure continuity.

The revision process has taken six years. What have been the key challenges in developing a consensus among experts and stakeholders across Switzerland?

The six-year revision process was shaped by three main challenges: defining acceptable risk, translating the risk-oriented approach into workable regulation, and ensuring broad acceptance within the professional community.

The first challenge was agreeing on explicit protection goals and acceptable risk levels.

Previous regulations were largely based on implicit safety assumptions.

Moving towards clearly defined risk criteria required a structured stakeholder process and discussion of societal expectations regarding safety, proportionality and affordability.

The second challenge lay in translating risk-based principles into rules that are understandable, practicable and legally robust for everyday planning, approval and enforcement.

Prescriptive rules ensure consistency and legal certainty, whereas a more risk-oriented approach allows tailored solutions but requires greater professional judgement.

There is also a trade-off between simplicity and risk orientation.

Simple rules are easier to communicate and enforce, but may not lead to the most proportionate allocation of resources.

It became clear that uniformity, simplicity, flexibility and risk orientation cannot all be maximised simultaneously.

The BSV 2026 therefore reflect a balanced compromise between these objectives.

The third challenge involved coordination within the professional community.

More than 140 experts from authorities, fire services, industry, research institutions and associations worked in interdisciplinary working groups.

Aligning different professional perspectives and regional practices required sustained dialogue.

Ensuring consistent terminology and shared understanding across cantons and disciplines was an important part of this process, including the development of a unified technical vocabulary.

The draft is described as “risk-oriented.” Could you explain how this approach changes the way fire safety is assessed and prioritised compared to traditional prescriptive regulations?

Traditional prescriptive regulations already contained implicit risk-based elements combined with classical hazard prevention.

The BSV 2026 make this risk-oriented logic explicit and structurally embedded.

Existing fire protection measures were systematically analysed by identifying the protected goods, the protection goals they serve and their contribution to risk reduction.

This enables a more explicit assessment of the utility of individual measures.

A central change is the formal consideration of proportionality: the costs of a measure are evaluated in relation to the safety benefit it provides.

When measures are combined, diminishing marginal utility is taken into account.

Risk reduction is not additive, as lives or assets protected by one measure cannot be protected again by another.

Where full quantitative risk assessment was not feasible, structured reasoning was applied to assess whether a measure is proportionate.

It is important to note that the prescriptive pathway remains the primary means of compliance for most projects.

What changes is the decision logic behind when and why a measure is required.

Prescriptive requirements are derived from an explicit risk-oriented framework.

How have international fire incidents, research, and global best practices informed the development of the BSV 2026 draft?

The revision began with a data-driven assessment based on long-term fire and damage statistics from the Swiss cantonal fire insurance institutions.

Dedicated models were developed to describe fire frequencies and damage consequences.

International research on fire risk assessment and loss modelling was reviewed and adapted to Swiss conditions.

This includes probabilistic approaches to fire growth, detection, evacuation and intervention, as well as treatment of uncertainties.

A framework for evaluating fire protection measures based on life cycle costs was developed in parallel.

International fire incidents and accident investigations were examined to identify recurring patterns, particularly those related to enforcement gaps, unclear responsibilities or maintenance deficiencies.

These findings informed clearer allocation of responsibilities, harmonised competency requirements and inspection regimes.

A Model Code was developed as the methodological backbone of the regulation.

Drawing on international frameworks such as NFPA 550, IRCC guidance, BSI PD 7974 and SFPE approaches, system characteristics influencing risk were identified.

These include user-related, usage-related and building-specific parameters.

Together, these indicators define the risk profile of a building and form the basis for prescriptive requirements and analytical verification.

What practical improvements does BSV 2026 introduce in areas such as escape routes, smoke detection, passive fire protection, and overall fire safety management?

The practical improvements stem from the systematic review of existing requirements.

Provisions that previously led to interpretative disputes have been clarified and integrated more consistently.

In the area of escape routes, a more differentiated approach is introduced.

Under defined conditions, escape route lengths may depend on parameters such as room height, smoke storage volume, occupant density, number of escape options and the presence of automatic detection systems.

In very high rooms with sufficient smoke reservoir volume and appropriate safety measures, longer travel distances may be justified.

With respect to passive fire protection, the draft proposes a more targeted approach to cladding of building components.

Instead of requiring cladding on all sides, protection can focus on the side exposed to a potential fire scenario.

This enables more proportionate solutions, particularly in combustible construction.

With regard to smoke detection, the BSV 2026 do not introduce a general obligation for private smoke alarms in residential units; however, automatic fire detection and alarm systems remain required in certain building categories where the defined risk profile justifies such measures.

At the same time, fundamental safety principles remain unchanged.

Core requirements concerning ceiling linings with critical fire behaviour and restrictions on decorative materials continue to apply.

Adjustments are introduced only where risk analysis indicates that the overall safety level is not noticeably reduced.

How should building owners, facility managers, and insurers approach compliance under the risk-oriented framework to ensure safety beyond simply meeting regulatory requirements?

Prescriptive regulations remain the primary basis for day-to-day compliance.

For most projects, following the prescriptive pathway will remain standard practice.

The risk-oriented framework becomes relevant when prescriptive assumptions are no longer valid or when alternative solutions are proposed.

In such cases, compliance can be demonstrated through explicit risk assessment.

This requires showing that defined user risk limits are met and that the ALARP principle is fulfilled.

All requirements are systematically linked to defined protection goals and system characteristics.

Measures are explicitly connected to the objectives they serve.

This improves transparency and supports informed decision-making.

For building owners and insurers, the clearer definition of regulatory objectives may also support consideration of additional voluntary measures, for example in relation to business continuity or asset protection.

How do you envision the implementation of BSV 2026 influencing fire safety practices, risk assessment, and decision-making in Switzerland over the next few years?

The implementation of BSV 2026 is expected to strengthen the integration of prescriptive, performance-based and risk-based verification within a single framework.

The regulation allows these approaches to be applied consistently and, where appropriate, in combination.

The framework is designed to accommodate future developments, including new data, technologies and use cases.

Both new and existing buildings were considered during development, which is relevant for refurbishment, adaptive reuse and sustainability objectives.

In practice, the revised framework may support more tailored fire safety solutions aligned with building characteristics and use.

At the same time, it makes clear that safety concepts must be reassessed if occupancy or use changes.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation outlines FDIC programme marking 25 years since 9/11

FDIC programme highlights tribute events alongside operational training

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will attend Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) International in Indianapolis from April 20 to 25, with a programme tied to the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

The Foundation announced it will host tribute events during the conference, including a memorial stair climb, an awards event and a fundraising campaign linked to Whelen Engineering.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation CEO Victor Stagnaro said: “The courage, dedication, and leadership of our nation’s firefighters inspire us every day.

“The training at FDIC helps ensure today’s fire service is prepared with that same level of leadership when it is needed most. From the Night of Honor to the Whelen Challenge and the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, this week reflects our mission in action, honoring our fallen heroes, supporting their families, and working to prevent future tragedies.”

A Night of Honor: When the World Stopped, They Stood is scheduled for April 23 at 6 p.m., with tickets starting at $50.

The event will include an award ceremony for Fire Chiefs Terry Shaffer and Edward P. Plaugher, along with Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr.

Shaffer led his department at the site of the United Airlines Flight 93 crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and Plaugher coordinated operations for the Pentagon response.

Ganci led his rescue operations team into the North Tower and died in the line of duty.

Stair climb and Whelen activities

The NFFF will also host a FDIC 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday, April 24 at 1 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Participants will climb or walk the equivalent of 110 stories in tribute to the 343 FDNY firefighters who died as a result of 9/11.

The first 343 participants who register online will receive a 25th anniversary 9/11 challenge coin.

Those who raise more than $110 will have the opportunity to receive commemorative gifts.

The registration fee is $40 and online registration closes at midnight on April 23.

Attendees at FDIC International can also register on April 22 and 23 at the Indianapolis Convention Center.

Participants are encouraged to wear athletic gear and not wear full turnout gear.

Tribute car unveiling and donation match

The same announcement states that Whelen Engineering will unveil its 2026 No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Camaro on April 23 at 12:00 p.m. at Booth #3219.

The car will carry the name of each Fire Hero being added to the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial this year.

Whelen Engineering has also pledged to match donations made to the NFFF up to $50,000 through the Whelen Challenge.

The campaign is intended to support fallen firefighters and their families, while funding programmes aimed at reducing line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

The Indianapolis programme brings together commemoration, fundraising and public tribute during the week of FDIC International.

Armstrong Fluid Technology names new CEO

Armstrong appoints new chief executive

Armstrong Fluid Technology has appointed Danilo Elez as Chief Executive Officer, with the company saying he will lead its next phase of growth and innovation.

The company announced the appointment and said Elez is joining at a point when the company sees clear differentiation in system-level fluid flow.

It said this expertise links system design with analytics to improve performance across a building’s full lifecycle.

Its solutions support building infrastructure and mission critical applications worldwide.

Armstrong said this work carries a responsibility to optimise energy use and support sustainability and decarbonisation.

Elez brings HVAC and building technology experience

Danilo Elez previously held senior leadership roles at Trane, KONE and Johnson Controls.

The company said he has led global organisations and is known for driving sustainable growth and improving operational performance.

It also said his experience includes combining engineered products with services, digital capabilities and system-level solutions.

Armstrong has operated as a privately held company since its founding in 1934.

The company said this ownership structure supports a long-term perspective based on learning and innovation, community and service.

Elez holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

He also holds undergraduate degrees in Industrial Engineering and Economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Armstrong said Elez is a Fulbright Scholar with international experience.

England remediation plan targets faster higher-risk building safety works

Remediation plan targets faster decisions

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) has introduced an external remediation improvement plan to reduce delays to higher-risk building safety works across England.

BSR said the plan includes a dedicated external remediation multidisciplinary team, lower average caseloads for regulatory leads and wider use of approval with requirements where appropriate.

The regulator said it will recruit more staff to reduce individual caseloads from an average of 25 to around 10.

The new multidisciplinary team will be supported by external remediation account managers handling applicant communications and portfolio concerns.

BSR also plans to pilot the use of building control professionals from different classes to support case officers and regulatory leads.

A new consistency process will be introduced to resolve technical disputes more quickly.

The regulator is also moving towards more direct engagement with applicants, including initial meetings for more complex projects.

BSR said it will publish a clear external remediation prioritisation structure and is working on digital visibility changes so applicants can track progress after submission.

Older cases and application quality

BSR said around 40% of ongoing external remediation applications rely on government funding, and many older complex cases are taking longer to reach decisions.

The regulator said internal resource constraints and a high volume of older non-compliant industry submissions are driving the current caseload.

Incomplete applications are delaying decisions where required technical information or legal documentation is missing.

Examples include limited evidence of fire-resistant properties for replacement cladding and related materials, missing structural loading calculations and incomplete demonstration of thermal performance.

Delays are also linked to incomplete design information, unsupported non-worsening claims and poorly organised documents.

Ambiguity over retained combustibles is also described as a frequent cause of failure.

BSR said it has published initial guidance for external remediation work on existing higher-risk buildings and will issue more feedback, resources and support in the coming months.

The regulator is also planning better data sharing with organisations managing government funds, including Homes England.

By December 2026, BSR is aiming to reduce average decision times for remediation applications to less than 12 weeks and achieve approval rates above 65%.

Lord Roe, BSR Board Chair, said: “We continue to accelerate our decision-making for new build applications, speeding up approvals for new build and external remediation projects and increasing the supply of safe new and existing homes through the recent changes we have made to our processes.

“We recognise current determination times for remediation cases are falling short of statutory targets.

“This plan represents a targeted and achievable package of measures to reset the system and clear older legacy remediation cases.

“By doing so and then focussing on more recent applications, we can ensure high-rise residents see essential safety improvements they deserve without unnecessary or further delays.”

Charlie Pugsley, Acting CEO of BSR, added: “As we enter an important new chapter as a standalone regulator, our focus is on strengthening safety, rebuilding trust and supportively collaborating with industry.

“Collectively these measures will ensure current and future remediation applications can proceed as smoothly and quickly as possible.

“By launching a dedicated multidisciplinary team and introducing account managers, we are dramatically increasing our capacity to make faster decisions.

“Speed cannot come at the cost of safety.

“We will also publish further specific guidance and support to help industry submit higher-quality applications, ensuring thousands of residents can feel safe, and are safe in their high-rise homes.”

Firehalt to return to Fire Safety Event at NEC

Firehalt will attend the Fire Safety Event at the NEC in Hall 4 on stand H97 for the first time in several years.

The company announced the appearance following its acquisition by SaveGuard in June 2024.

SaveGuard designs acoustic and thermal insulation products.

Firehalt said its personnel will be on stand H97 in Hall 4 to answer questions about fire barrier systems.

Firehalt says show will support market research

Magirus expands beyond fire with new Defense & Security unit

Fire portfolio expands at Magirus

Magirus has established Defense & Security as an independent strategic business unit within the Magirus Group, alongside the ongoing integration of its Radfeld site in Austria.

Magirus announced the change on 26 March 2026, stating that the Radfeld site originated from the acquisition of Achleitner Fahrzeugbau GmbH.

The company said operational processes at the Austrian site are being transferred into Magirus Group structures.

Rebranding of the Radfeld site into the Magirus Group is scheduled to be completed in April 2026.

Magirus said no merger of the legal entities is planned.

The company said the aim is to realise synergies and retain the Radfeld site’s identity, experience and core competencies.

As part of the reorganisation, former Managing Director Ewald Gattermayr has left the company.

Radfeld site and production plans

Magirus said the new business segment develops and manufactures specialised vehicle solutions for armed forces, security authorities and operators of critical infrastructure.

It also covers highly specialised vehicles for deployment in demanding terrain.

The company said the segment is intended to extend the existing Magirus portfolio beyond fire and disaster control.

Targeted investments are planned to scale production capacities at the Radfeld site.

Magirus said the site is intended to remain in place and serve as a central part of the Group’s Defense & Security business segment.

The announcement states that Magirus is expanding its scope beyond fire and disaster control while keeping its long-standing focus on technology intended to protect the public and first responders.

Reducing exposure: Rescue Intellitech highlights PPE risks in UK fire services

Rescue Intellitech’s UK and Ireland Sales Manager, Nick Croad, examines growing concerns over firefighters’ exposure to toxic smoke particles and how UK Fire and Rescue Services are strengthening decontamination procedures to reduce risk

Evidence continues to grow linking firefighters’ exposure to smoke particles with serious long-term health risks.

While specialist protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus help firefighters to stay safe during incidents, there is increasing concern that toxic residues from smoke can linger on PPE long after a fire is extinguished, where they can later be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, potentially causing harm.

In 2023, a report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic, specifically identifying increased risks of mesothelioma and bladder cancer.

In the same year, a study by the University of Central Lancashire, commissioned by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), found that UK firefighters have higher rates of cancer than the general population.

Significantly, it revealed that firefighters who remain in PPE for more than four hours after attending a fire are more than twice as likely to develop cancer than those who remove PPE within 30 minutes.

In February this year, the London Assembly Fire Committee published a report investigating contamination exposure within the London Fire Brigade.

It called for improved monitoring and measurement of exposure and made recommendations to central Government to consider establishing a nation-wide health monitoring programme for UK firefighters.

Stronger measures

In the meantime, in response to these concerns, organisations such as the FBU have been campaigning for stronger contamination control measures to better protect firefighters.

It is hoped that more robust decontamination procedures within the fire station and regular cleaning of PPE will help reduce the risks to firefighter health.

In March 2025, the FBU set out several recommendations for FRSs in its Best Practice Report, including:

  • Implementing formal decontamination procedures covering on-scene, post-incident and station-based cleaning processes.
  • Ensuring PPE is cleaned and decontaminated after fire incidents, preventing the build-up of hazardous contaminants on kit.
  • Designing stations with clear contamination zones, such as red, amber and green areas, to prevent dirty equipment entering clean spaces.
  • Providing training on contamination risks and safe working practices.
  • Encouraging rapid personal decontamination, including showering and changing into clean clothing as soon as possible after incidents.

FRSs around the UK are already taking these recommendations seriously, by reviewing decontamination procedures and adapting the fire station layout to reduce exposure risks.

This includes assessing and improving PPE handling, equipment cleaning and staff training.

A growing number are upgrading their decontamination rooms and PPE cleaning facilities, creating clearly defined zones around the station to ensure designated areas stay clean.

Heavy-duty cleaning

A selection of equipment holders allows different PPE combinations to be decontaminated together in rapid cycles taking a maximum of eight minutes.

For smaller fire stations where space is limited, the streamlined DeconWasher Pro S version delivers the same wash performance but in a more compact size.

Last year, we launched our specialist DE Series washing machines which have been specifically designed to decontaminate firefighter clothing and specialist garments.

Suitable for heavy-duty textiles as well as delicate technical fabrics, they ensure a thorough wash that is gentle enough to preserve the integrity and protective capabilities of valuable PPE.

With three sizes to choose from, fire services can scale to their operational needs.

Finally, our fast and efficient drying cabinets, DC20 and the smaller DC8, offer rapid but gentle drying of PPE.

These dryers can be specifically configured to accommodate bulky kit and equipment, with a combination of shelves and hanging space suitable for clothing, boots, gloves, helmets and SCBA.

Both the interior and exterior of the PPE is dried at the same time, so kit is quickly ready for use.

Chris Simpson, Watch Manager and Equipment Officer at Avon FRS explains how Solo Rescue machines have become integral to its decontamination procedures: “We have a ‘safe undress’ policy for removing PPE after an incident.

“Jacket, trousers, boots and gloves are carefully removed, and special wipes are used to clean exposed skin.

“Then latex gloves are put on before the helmet is removed and the flash hood taken off over the mask and down the SCBA hose.

“The SCBA mask is the last thing to remove, replaced immediately with an FFP3 mask.

“Dirty clothing is then placed in red bags and stored in a separate area of the truck and station for collection and cleaning, while the helmets and SCBA are also bagged and taken to one of our stations for decontamination in the Solo Rescue machines.

“These can be loaded in batches which is very easy, and much quicker than cleaning by hand.

“We then try to ‘shower within the hour’ using special soap and shampoo for removing contaminants.

“Together, these are all important steps to help us minimise exposure to harmful particles and keep our crews safe.”

Similarly, Buckinghamshire FRS uses a bank of six Solo Rescue machines to decontaminate SCBA equipment.

Aron Ridgely, Station Commander, said: “We have robust decontamination processes in place at the scene of an incident and back at the station.

“Contaminated PPE is bagged and sealed and only handled with a mask and gloves.

“By using Solo Rescue, it has continued to reduce risks, as firefighters now have minimal contact with contaminated equipment during washing.”

States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (SJFRS) has also installed a Solo Rescue machine at its headquarters in St Helier as part of a reconfiguration of its decontamination room.

Previously, SCBA and other PPE items were carefully cleaned by hand, but keen to mitigate the health risks as much as possible, SJFRS decided to invest in a decontamination machine for a deeper clean.

Station Commander, Ben Elliott, comments: “We recognised that by investing in the Solo Rescue machine, the process would be quicker and more efficient, as well as safer for our staff.

“Crucially, the mechanical cleaning of PPE helps to reduce exposure and contact time.

“In particular, SCBA sets are complex and tricky to clean manually, but come out visibly cleaner with the Solo Rescue.”

Importance of collaboration

To complete the fit out of the newly configured decontamination area, SJFRS has also ordered two drying cabinets, a large DC20 and a smaller DC8, which will be located in the adjacent drying room.

As the understanding of contamination risks to firefighters continues to develop, FRSs are increasingly focussing on robust decontamination procedures and improved facilities to help keep their crews safe.

By combining clear operational guidance, effective training and appropriate equipment, fire services are taking action now to reduce exposure risks and protect firefighter health for the future.

Fire safety at scale: Drax Technology on digital compliance gaps

David Simpson, Group Product Director of Drax Technology, explains how digital monitoring provides the real time assurance now expected in the UK build to rent sector

Across the UK’s rapidly growing build-to-rent (BTR) sector, fire safety compliance is undergoing a shift driven by scale, regulation and data.

The UK’s BTR stock now exceeds 147,000 completed homes, with a further 50,000 under construction and 100,000 in planning (Savills).

As portfolios expand across dozens of buildings and thousands of units, maintaining oversight and demonstrating fire safety compliance becomes increasingly complex.

Traditional methods such as paper logs, spreadsheets and periodic inspections are increasingly fragmented and struggle to deliver the transparency regulators, investors and residents demand at portfolio scale.

Fire safety in residential portfolios has become a data problem.

Digital systems provide the only realistic means of delivering real-time visibility, verifiable records and portfolio-wide assurance at scale.

Digital tools replace manual inspection records, reduce risk, improve efficiency and ensure compliance can be demonstrated continuously.

Regulation driving continuous oversight

The Building Safety Act has reframed fire safety management as a continuous process supported by reliable data.

For large BTR operators, this means maintaining consistent, auditable oversight of fire detection systems, inspection regimes, fault rectification and contractor activity across entire portfolios rather than relying on periodic inspection alone.

For those responsible for the safety performance of thousands of homes, the hardest risk to manage is often the one hidden between inspections.

If you cannot answer in real time whether a system is working as intended, there is no assurance.

That exposure is regulatory and commercial.

In a post-Grenfell regulatory landscape, transparency has become the baseline expectation.

BTR operators unable to provide auditable evidence of compliance face increasing regulatory and commercial scrutiny.

Investors in BTR assets are scrutinising the quality of fire safety data, treating it as an indicator of asset value, operational resilience and the reliability of long-term income.

Properties unable to provide verifiable safety assurance risk attracting closer inspection and losing investor confidence.

Gaps in records introduce uncertainty that can delay transactions, complicate due diligence and increase legal exposure.

Limits of paper-based compliance

For decades, the fire safety industry has relied on paper-based systems with logs stored across spreadsheets, PDFs and siloed platforms.

These create blind spots that make it difficult to maintain an accurate picture across multiple buildings.

Human error compounds the problem, meaning inspections can be missed, entries left incomplete and faults going unaddressed.

A tick in a spreadsheet may show that a test was recorded, yet it provides little assurance that it was completed correctly or that the device functioned as intended.

This disconnect between recorded compliance and actual system performance is where unmanaged risk accumulates.

From a boardroom perspective, the most uncomfortable conversations are about questions leadership teams cannot answer with evidence.

With digital systems, every alarm test can be logged automatically, giving the Accountable Person auditable proof of what has been done, when and by whom.

Governance-grade reporting allows asset managers, boards and investment committees to move from anecdotal reassurance to measurable oversight.

Data revealing compliance gaps

Audit data shows that only a fraction of buildings have completed all fire safety checks in line with legislation.

In some cases, sites had no verifiable record of testing.

In many organisations there is limited awareness of the risks created by manual record-keeping or how digital monitoring systems can address them.

In most cases, non-compliance reflects a lack of visibility.

Effective intervention becomes possible once risk is clearly identified.

Integrated fire alarm management platforms centralise alarm data, automate reporting and create audit-ready records that scale from single buildings to complex portfolios.

Analysis of official fire and rescue service data identified nearly 500 fires in tall buildings where smoke alarms failed to activate.

In 17 incidents alarms had missing or defective batteries, while 21 incidents involved alarms that were faulty or incorrectly installed.

Without centralised visibility of alarm performance, these deficiencies remain hidden.

Platforms such as SafeVue are designed for continuous fire alarm monitoring, tracking alarm activity, fault conditions and device status so issues can be identified and addressed before they escalate.

False alarms and operational strain

Research indicates around 22,000 unnecessary emergency callouts each year in medium and high-rise buildings.

These incidents place strain on emergency services, disrupt residents and generate unplanned costs.

In many cases, the cause is fragmented documentation that makes it difficult to diagnose recurring issues or demonstrate remedial action.

Digital oversight enables genuine incidents to be distinguished from repeat false activations, allowing earlier intervention and reduced callouts.

This prevents minor issues escalating from a £1,000 fix into a £10,000 operational problem.

Digital oversight as governance requirement

Digital fire safety solutions shift compliance from a reactive process into a portfolio-wide management practice, providing the visibility modern operators and regulators expect.

Digital tools have become a core requirement because the absence of reliable information creates risk.

Digital fire safety is now a governance responsibility.

In a post-Grenfell environment, senior leaders are judged on the evidence they can provide.

Visibility has become a measure of accountability.

Operators who adopt technology to demonstrate compliance, operational resilience and reliable oversight are setting the benchmark for the UK’s expanding BTR sector.

OroraTech recognised for wildfire monitoring platform in North America

OroraTech named in 2025 innovators list

OroraTech has been named to Darcy Partners’ Top 10 Innovators in Environmental Risk & Resilience list for 2025, with the announcement made on 7 April 2026 in Denver, Colorado.

OroraTech said the recognition reflects its work providing real-time wildfire data to North American utility operators, land managers and wildland firefighters.

The company’s Wildfire Solution (WFS) platform aggregates thermal data from more than 35 satellites.

That network includes OroraTech’s FOREST constellation, which it describes as the first constellation in space dedicated to wildfire monitoring and detection.

The platform is designed to track wildfires as they happen and provide fire propagation predictions as well as burnt area assessments.

Platform details and company response

According to OroraTech, the platform uses satellites targeting the “Afternoon Gap” – the period of peak burn when public satellite coverage is limited.

The company said this is intended to give first responders continuous high-resolution visibility through smoke and haze.

Stephen Murdock, Senior Manager, Utilities Solutions at OroraTech USA, said: “Putting sensors in space is part of our business, but what we are really doing is building a lifeline for the incident commanders and utility operators making high-stakes decisions on the ground.
