Intersec 2026 brings NFPA and ASFP to Dubai stage

Intersec has announced the return of its Fire & Rescue sector at Dubai World Trade Centre from 12 to 14 January 2026.

The event will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Ports and Borders Security Council.

Fire & Rescue is one of five core sectors at Intersec 2026 and will combine a dedicated exhibition with a multi-day conference programme.

The platform is designed to bring together manufacturers, regulators, engineers, civil defence authorities and frontline responders.

UAE initiatives and technology developments

The 2026 Fire & Rescue programme is linked to recent emergency preparedness initiatives across the UAE, including Dubai Civil Defence’s “1 Billion Readiness Project” launched earlier in 2025.

The initiative aims to educate one billion people on fire prevention and establish additional fire stations.

The National Fire Protection Association joined the initiative shortly after its launch.

In Abu Dhabi, civil defence authorities are working with the Advanced Technology Research Council on the use of artificial intelligence in emergency response and training.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed has reviewed autonomous firefighting robots equipped with 3D mapping technology designed for use in hazardous, smoke-filled environments.

Dubai Civil Defence has stated an ambition to reduce carbon emissions from fire incidents by 80 percent by 2050.

NFPA sessions on codes and leadership

The Fire & Rescue conference will include sessions supported by the National Fire Protection Association, with a focus on leadership, collaboration and the role of codes and standards in safety practice.

The Fire & Rescue exhibition will cover fire suppression systems, fire detection, passive fire protection and integrated life safety technologies.

Returning exhibitors include NAFFCO, Hochiki, UL, Bristol Fire Engineering, FM Approvals and ATEIS.

Intersec 2026 will span ten exhibition halls.

The wider event is expected to host more than 1,400 exhibitors from over 60 countries and attract more than 50,000 trade visitors.

Intersec will expand by almost 12,000 square metres through the addition of two new halls, bringing total gross exhibition space to 67,000 square metres.

Conference programme and Passive Fire Day

The Fire & Rescue conference agenda will address artificial intelligence in early fire prediction, integration of building life safety systems, decision-making psychology under crisis conditions and human behaviour in emergencies.

Sessions will also examine the impact of climate change on fire dynamics, best practice in passive fire protection, the evolution of fire doors and international regulatory developments.

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has published a blog post dated Wednesday 10 December 2025 reviewing its work across 2025 and outlining priorities moving into 2026.

Hamm added that the IFE represented the profession at global trade shows including the IFSJ Leaders Conference in Dubai, Intersec in Saudi Arabia, the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas and the Fire Safety Event in the UK.

Standards, guidance and technical work

Hamm said the IFE had an active year linked to technical standards and guidance.

He referenced BS 8674, which he described as setting competence requirements for fire risk assessors.

The blog also referenced the forthcoming BS EN 81-76 standard for evacuation lifts.

Hamm said the IFE supported the publication of PAS 8700:2025, which he described as addressing modern construction methods.

He also referenced a draft update to PAS 9980, which he said introduces tools to help determine when a Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls (FRAEW) is required.

Hamm said the IFE strengthened engagement with Special Interest Groups through new Terms of Reference.

He also said the IFE is leading the response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 recommendations.

Early careers programme and online sessions

Hamm said the IFE continued work connected to early career support following the launch of the Early Careers Networking Group (ECNG) last year.

He said the organisation introduced Elevate, described as a series of 60-minute interactive online sessions led by experts from across the global fire sector.

Hamm said Elevate was backed by partners including the Association For Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) and London Fire Brigade.

He said the series has been extended into 2026.

Sector reform and inclusion work

Hamm referenced UK building safety reform activity during 2025, including an April statement that the UK Government reaffirmed its commitment to building safety reform.

He also referenced the Engineering Council’s introduction of the UK-SPEC HRB standard, which he described as strengthening professional competence for those working on higher-risk buildings, and said the IFE supports it.

The blog also described work on Equity, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EEDI) in partnership with Equal Engineers.

Hamm said the IFE hosted member-led focus groups as part of that work.

2026 outlook in the blog

Hamm said the IFE remains dedicated to advancing the fire safety profession worldwide as it moves into 2026.

He linked that intention to the organisation’s strategy and what he described as an enthusiastic global community.

San Francisco Fire Department adopts non-PFAS turnout gear across fleet

San Francisco completes fleetwide non-PFAS gear transition with Fire-Dex

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) has become the largest fire department in the United States to transition its entire fleet to non-PFAS turnout gear, according to Fire-Dex.

Fire-Dex said the department is scheduled to receive 1,100 sets of non-PFAS turnout gear by Wednesday 31 December 2025, providing one set for every frontline suppression member.

Fire-Dex said the first shipment was delivered in December 2025.

Fire-Dex said the purchase was funded in part through a $2.35 million Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and matching funds from the department.

Dean Crispen, Fire Chief at the San Francisco Fire Department, said: “As the San Francisco Fire Department continues to lead in innovation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our members.

“Firefighting is inherently dangerous, and our personnel deserve access to the most modern, protective, and safest turnout gear available.

“Transitioning to PFAS-free equipment is a critical step in advancing our mission: safeguarding the public by ensuring our firefighters remain healthy and able to serve at their highest capacity,

“This distribution represents more than new gear, it reflects a strong, coordinated effort among the Fire Department, our elected leaders, SF Firefighters IAFF Local 798, and the SF Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation.

“Milliken and Fire-Dex rose to this challenge, demonstrating what is possible when partners are united by a shared purpose.

non-PFAS rollout follows city ordinance

Fire-Dex said the transition follows an ordinance passed in May 2024 that made San Francisco the first city in the country to ban the use of PFAS chemicals in firefighters’ turnout gear.

Fire-Dex said the ordinance set a deadline of Monday 30 June 2026 for the department to complete the switch.

Fire-Dex said department officials moved to procure and test potential options and selected the final gear ahead of that deadline.

Fire-Dex said San Francisco covers 49 square miles and is the fourth largest city in California.

Fire-Dex said the San Francisco Fire Department is the 10th largest fire department in the United States and serves an estimated 1.5 million people.

Fire-Dex said the department operates 45 stations and responds to an average of 180,000 annual emergency calls.

Testing, UL certification and NFPA standards

Fire-Dex said the selected gear went through performance and safety testing, including a 90-day wear trial with 50 firefighters.

Fire-Dex said the trial included live fire training at the San Francisco Division of Training burn rooms.

Fire-Dex said the turnout gear is UL certified.

Fire-Dex said it meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1971-2018 and 1971-2025 standards.

Fire-Dex said non-fluorinated fabrics have existed for turnout gear outer shells and thermal liners, while moisture barrier alternatives remained a technical challenge.

Moisture barrier and supply chain partners

Fire-Dex said Milliken & Company introduced Milliken Assure in October 2024 as a non-PFAS, non-halogenated flame-resistant moisture barrier.

Fire-Dex said this enabled Fire-Dex to provide a solution that met the department’s requirements.

Marcio Manique, SVP and Managing Director of Milliken’s apparel business, said: “A non-PFAS moisture barrier was the missing piece for departments wanting to move away from fluorinated chemicals.

“With Assure, we refused to trade one hazard for another.

“It meets the strictest performance standards without adding weight or compromising breathability – giving firefighters exactly what they asked for.”

Fire-Dex said the San Francisco Fire Department worked with MES Life Safety to order the garments from Fire-Dex and to size each firefighter individually.

House of Lords Committee cites cladding delays risking 1.5 million homes target

A cross-party House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee has warned the Government that Building Safety Regulator (BSR) approval delays are leaving residents in England waiting longer for dangerous cladding remediation, with higher costs for leaseholders.

The Committee published its report, The Building Safety Regulator: Building a better regulator, on Thursday 11 December 2025.

It said the delays have stretched beyond the regulator’s statutory timelines for building control decisions.

The Committee said it welcomed the increased scrutiny the BSR has brought to the design, construction and management of buildings in the interest of safety.

It also warned that delays could put the Government at risk of missing its target to build 1.5 million homes by 2029.

Findings on guidance and application quality

After hearing from witnesses including campaign groups, developers, housing associations and regulators working closely with the BSR, the Committee said the BSR has not given clear enough guidance on how applicants should demonstrate that buildings are safe.

It said many applications are being rejected or delayed because of basic errors.

It also said applicants are struggling to evidence how they are considering elements of fire safety and structural safety.

The Committee said this reflects poorly on the construction industry.

It also raised concerns that many construction products do not have relevant product standards, leaving them unregulated.

Inspector workforce and scope concerns

The Committee said difficulties in local authority funding and the introduction of regulation have contributed to an ageing workforce of building inspectors who are struggling to meet demand.

It said smaller works, such as bathroom renovations in high-rise buildings, are being subject to the scrutiny of the BSR’s multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).

The Committee linked that to pressure on MDT capacity.

It said a more streamlined approach is needed for smaller works.

Calls for BSR process changes

The Committee called on the BSR to give greater guidance to MDTs on how compliance with the Building Regulations should be evidenced and assessed to improve consistency.

It also called on the Government to remove smaller works from the BSR’s building control approval processes, or introduce a streamlined approval process for them.

The Committee said allocating the same MDTs to similar buildings or projects built by the same organisation could improve efficiency and consistency.

It also called on the Government to provide long-term funding for the training of new building and fire inspectors.

BSR response on processing times

The Building Safety Regulator said: “We recognise that building control applications have been taking too long to process.

“Since the Committee began its hearings in the summer, we have made significant changes to speed up decision making with a focus on new build and cladding remediation applications.

“These include a new Innovation Unit, batching processes, and the introduction of account managers to improve communication with applicants.

“These improvements are helping to increase industry confidence and, in the 12 weeks to 24 November, enabled construction to proceed on over 11,000 new homes.

“We also saw a 73% approval rate for new build decisions during that time, demonstrating that changes introduced are beginning to work.

“Making sure buildings with dangerous cladding are remediated quickly is also a priority and will be the focus of our new Remediation Enforcement Unit which will begin working on cases in the new year.

“The Committee’s recognition that BSR has successfully driven a ‘crucial cultural shift’ toward safer homes is a welcome endorsement of the new regime.

“We remain firmly committed to being a proportionate and enabling regulator that works alongside the construction sector to protect residents and deliver safe buildings in support of the government’s housing targets.”

Committee Chair comments on delays

Baroness Taylor of Bolton, Chair of the Committee, said: “The tragic loss of 72 lives at the Grenfell Tower fire laid bare the urgent need to reform building safety regulation in England, particularly for high-rise buildings.

“We welcome that the Government and the BSR are now acting to try and make practical improvements, but this will not address the anxiety and frustration that residents and companies have experienced.

“It does not improve safety to delay vital remediation and refurbishments, nor to deter the delivery of new housing in high-rise buildings.

“We expect to see further action from the Government and the BSR to ensure that construction projects in high-rise buildings can be brought forward more quickly, without compromising on vital safety improvements.”

What this means for approval teams and dutyholders

Delays linked to BSR approvals can affect fire engineers, building services engineers and design teams that need to evidence fire safety and structural safety decisions within building control submissions.

The Committee’s comments on basic application errors and missing evidence may lead dutyholders, principal designers and principal contractors to tighten internal checks before submissions, especially on how fire safety and structural safety have been considered.

Facilities managers and housing providers overseeing cladding remediation and refurbishment programmes may also see knock-on impacts where approvals sit on MDT caseloads for longer.

The Committee’s recommendations on removing smaller works from the BSR process, or streamlining approvals for them, could change how high-rise maintenance projects are planned and scheduled.

The call for long-term funding to train building and fire inspectors is directly relevant to enforcement capacity and the consistency of building control decisions.

Managing the foam phase-out: Alpine Fire outlines fluorine-free transition plans

What do facilities need to do to ensure their fire suppression systems are compliant and effective in the wake of changing regulations?  Fluorine-containing foam has been a vital part of the fire suppression industry for years.

But there’s a problem.

The foams are made using so-called ‘forever chemicals’; long-chain polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) that pose a significant risk to the environment due to their inability to break down in nature.

As concerns have grown, public pressure has mounted, and as of 4th July 2025, new regulations have come into effect banning the use of C8 Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF).

Facilities must now act to not only comply with new regulations but also ensure any existing foam stocks are safely removed and disposed of.

Will you be affected?

If you work in facilities such as chemical manufacturing plants, automotive facilities, oil refineries, military installations and many other kinds of industrial buildings; then there’s a good chance that your fire suppression system may use  some kind of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) enhancement.

These foams, when mixed with water, smother fires and prevent vapour ignition by cutting off the supply of oxygen.

That means they’re commonly used in facilities where flammable liquids or hazardous chemicals are located on-site.

But each facility is different, so the extent to which you will be impacted largely depends on the system that you currently have in place and the steps you have already taken to go fluorine-free.

How to safely remove PFAS from your fire suppression systems

Because the use of C8 fluorine-containing foam is now prohibited, facilities must prioritise compliance with new regulations.

Those that don’t could face notices and fines, not to mention the potential reputational damage that comes with Environment Agency warnings and penalties.

That means you need to plan for the appropriate isolation, removal and disposal of any existing C8 foam stocks from your fire suppression systems without delay.

But this may not be as simple as you may think.

Here are a few key steps that facilities should take to ensure they’re on the right side of new regulations:

1 – Assess your risk

Don’t assume your system is clean just because you’ve removed C8.

Instead you need to conduct a detailed analysis to ensure that all traces of prohibited substances have been removed.

Expert engineers can help you to assess your system on site, conduct sampling tests to measure the extent of foam migration and detect the presence of banned C8 compounds.

2 – Flush your system

After working with all stakeholders to plan for any disruption you should then conduct a thorough clean of your systems.

This should involve completely draining water and residual foam concentrate from your system as well as systematically cleaning all pipework and components with a separate flush.

It’s vital that this activity is conducted carefully, complying with UK environmental regulations to avoid harm to the environment.

Once completed you should also retest your systems.

3 – Ethical disposal

There are strict rules governing the disposal of C8 foams.

That means that you need to work with certified partners to ensure the safe removal, disposal and ethical incineration of any C8 foams from your system.

However in the current climate, the availability of disposal incinerators has become restricted due to the surge of facilities rushing to comply with regulations.

This means that you may face delays or significant cost fluctuations as you attempt to dispose of any existing foam stocks.

4 – Explore fluorine-free alternatives

With further restrictions to fluorine-containing foams expected, another shrewd move would be to begin exploring what fluorine-free alternatives are available.

Known as synthetic fluorine-free foams (SFFF), facilities will need to analyse how compatible their usage would be with their current fire suppression systems and plan for any adaptations that need to be made to accommodate them.

Many companies are also looking into future-proof water-only-based systems.

The time to act is now

Transitioning to a fluorine-free future is a complex task for many facilities.

Despite the ban on C8 foam coming into force, many UK businesses are still struggling to comply with changing regulations.

But this isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity.

Whether it’s the immediate ban on C8 foams or the inevitable restriction of C6, a fluorine-free future is coming.

Waiting to see how this will impact your fire suppression is not a viable strategy, instead now is the time to proactively assess your systems and explore alternative solutions.

Rethinking fire door safety: Why Fire Door Maintenance says competence still needs work

Nicola John, Managing Director at Fire Door Maintenance, explores how consistent training supports duty holders, maintenance teams, and contractors in meeting regulatory expectations for fire door safety assurance

Fire door performance in the UK now sits within clearer competence expectations.

BS 8670 offers a common structure for roles and skills, while a consultation on specialist timber fire door installers is refining pathways.

Focus has moved to lifecycle tasks, from installation through maintenance, with digital record systems strengthening audit trails and scheduling.

In this conversation, Nicola John, Managing Director at Fire Door Maintenance, sets out insights from recent sector discussions, focusing on accredited training that lifts installation quality, adoption of BS 8670 to clarify responsibilities, use of digital records for oversight and closer links to third-party verification so procurement, inspection and maintenance align.

What are you seeing day-to-day in terms of how fire door regulations are being followed on the ground?

We’ve seen a real shift in awareness since Grenfell, and many responsible persons are working hard to meet their legal obligations.

But understandably, some are still navigating the complexity of evolving regulations.

It’s not always easy to keep up, particularly for overstretched teams or those without dedicated fire safety support.

We’re also seeing positive intent – but sometimes a lack of technical knowledge – on the ground.

For instance, we still come across fire doors that have been installed by operatives without specific training, or buildings where maintenance checks have lapsed.

That’s where the risk lies.

With the right knowledge and support, these are issues we can absolutely tackle.

Where do you think the biggest misunderstandings about fire door compliance lie?

There’s still a perception in some areas that once a fire door is installed, the job’s done.

But they’re active safety systems that need ongoing care.

We’re doing a lot of work to help duty holders understand that responsibility doesn’t stop at installation – it extends across the full lifecycle.

The good news is, we’re seeing more clients ask the right questions.

That shows the message is starting to land.

How would you assess current levels of competence across those responsible for specifying, fitting or maintaining fire doors?

There’s a growing commitment to getting this right – and many fantastic professionals out there doing high-quality work.

But there are still gaps in consistency.

In particular, general contractors are sometimes asked to take on fire door work without having had the right training.

That’s why developments like BS 8670 are so important.

By providing a common framework for competence across the built environment, it gives the sector a shared language and standard to work towards.

We’re already seeing competency groups and employers start to embed this, which is a really encouraging step.

What are some of the most common failings when it comes to fire door maintenance or installation?

Installation is still a sticking point.

We see things like incorrect gaps, or the wrong components used.

These mistakes often stem from a lack of awareness rather than intent – and they’re avoidable with better training.

On the maintenance side, the most common issue is neglect over time: closers that no longer work, seals that have deteriorated, or doors that haven’t been inspected for years.

But again, these are challenges we can absolutely solve with the right systems, support and upskilling.

Why do you think poor practices still persist, even with clear guidance available?

In many cases, it’s not due to disregard – it’s down to capacity, confidence, or simply not knowing where to start.

Fire safety has traditionally been treated as a box-ticking exercise, but that’s changing.

One thing we’re keen to promote is the need for practical, hands-on training.

You can’t build real competence through guidance documents alone – especially for roles that are hands-on by nature.

That’s why we believe in investing in meaningful, accredited training that builds confidence and capability on site.

What are some simple changes that companies could make today to improve safety?

Prioritise training.

It’s one of the most effective ways to raise standards quickly.

When staff are trained through accredited centres like FDM, they’re not just ticking a box – they’re building the knowledge and confidence to do the job properly.

It also helps create a culture where people feel empowered to speak up, question things, and take responsibility for safety.

That culture shift is where real improvement starts.

How can better record-keeping or digital tools help raise standards in this area?

Digital tools are a huge opportunity.

They give responsible persons visibility over what’s been done, what’s due, and what needs fixing – without having to rely on paperwork alone.

That audit trail is important not just for compliance, but for peace of mind.

We’re seeing more companies explore these tools as part of a wider commitment to accountability and improvement, which is a great sign.

What’s missing from the current enforcement or oversight of fire door regulations?

There’s definitely a need for more proactive enforcement.

Fire and rescue services do brilliant work, but they’re stretched.

We welcome the progress being made through the development of competency frameworks using guidance like BS8670, which help define what good looks like.

The next step is for employers to really engage with that – by investing in staff development and understanding what ‘competence’ means in practice.

That’s how we move from minimum compliance to real assurance.

Do you expect further updates to legislation in this area and what would you like to see included?

Yes, and that’s a positive.

We’re seeing a stronger focus on competence across the board, and legislation that supports that shift is welcome.

But regulation on its own isn’t enough.

We need joined-up thinking between designers, contractors and building managers – and a clear link between training and third-party schemes that verify work on site.

That consistency builds trust, and helps raise standards across the industry.

We’ve recently seen a consultation on the competency framework for specialist timber fire door installers, which is a positive step in the right direction.

But the industry still needs clearer guidance across the board.

Operatives working with a wide range of products and site types need a consistent framework that supports quality, regardless of the door type being installed.

What will it take to create lasting change across the industry – cultural, legal or operational?

It’s a mix of all three.

Legally, we need clarity and enforcement.

Operationally, we need better procurement and practical training.

But the cultural piece is just as important: we need to shift from seeing fire doors as assets to maintain, to seeing them as life-saving systems.

The direction of travel is encouraging.

We’re having the right conversations, and now it’s about turning that into action.

We’ve always believed that lasting change comes from a holistic approach – supporting everyone involved in the fire door chain, not just in theory but in day-to-day practice.

That’s been recognised by Dame Judith Hackitt, who highlighted our work as an example of the kind of thinking needed to drive real industry progress.

For us, it’s about working with industry to embed the right mindset, skills and systems at every level.

Why the vape effect matters: A plea to the tobacco industry from Fire Rover’s Ryan Fogelman

Vapes, weather and waste fire trends, by Ryan Fogelman

As we approach the end of the year, the waste and recycling industry is on track to reach a record number of publicly reported facility fire incidents in the US and Canada.

Much of the increase is driven by improperly discarded lithium ion batteries, including the rapid rise of disposable vapes that continue to enter waste streams in huge volumes.

In this month’s report, I share November’s fire data, explain the scale of the vape effect and outline the key points from my open letter to the tobacco industry urging collaboration on solutions the waste and recycling sector cannot deliver alone.

November 2025 fire data

We started 2025 on the wrong note by setting concerning records that marked the worst start to a year since I began tracking publicly reported waste and recycling facility fires in 2016.

July’s 56 reported incidents were the highest number ever recorded for that month and the highest single month total in the past decade.

August followed with 49 incidents and September reached 45.

In October there were 48 publicly reported incidents, outpacing the previous record year of 2022 by ten incidents at that stage in the calendar.

In November we had 27 fires, which was not a record but was only one incident below our highest November in 2020.

Scrap metal recycling yards fell behind waste, paper and plastic facilities with nine incidents, while waste, paper and plastic facilities recorded 13.

Organics management, rubber, construction and demolition and chemical or hazmat facilities each recorded one incident.

Year to date, scrap metal yard fires are still around 30 percent of all publicly reported incidents, which is in line with the long term pattern.

Based on current totals, I would be shocked if we did not end 2025 with the highest number of fire events ever recorded.

Even applying a simple December average would put the total at more than 440 incidents.

Unless December is unusually low, 2025 will be the worst year for publicly reported incidents since I began tracking in 2016.

What Fire Rover data shows

Fire Rover is seeing similar incident patterns.

Through September we responded to more than 3,000 confirmed fire events at client facilities and successfully responded to and suppressed 383 using our patented FM approved smart monitoring solution.

Like the publicly reported data, our incident volumes slowed entering the last two months of the year.

Once the year closes, I will release our full performance dashboard for 2022 to 2025.

At RCon I joined Alex Finkelstein of Teledyne FLIR for a discussion on how Fire Rover’s solution helps protect facilities from lithium ion battery hazards in critical infrastructure.

We took a deep dive into early detection and remote operated smart monitoring solutions and how our partnership led to the first FM approved remote operated fire protection system.

Although lithium ion batteries are a major contributor to increased incidents, I have also found that increased heat and dryness across the US and Canada remain significant factors for waste and recycling operations.

I will analyse weather correlations in my 2025 annual report, publishing in March 2026.

The vape effect

In my research I have identified what I call the vape effect.

The US and Canada have seen a 26 percent increase in the average number of facility fire events from 2022 to 2025 compared with the previous six years.

That figure does not include the 7 to 10 percent of facilities protected by Fire Rover, but if those were included I believe the increase would be closer to 40 percent.

The rapid shift from traditional cigarettes to vapes is a major contributor.

There were approximately 6 million new vape users from 2022 to 2024.

Many vapes are marketed as daily disposables and contain lithium ion batteries that must be handled as hazardous products.

We are lacking safe and convenient drop off locations, which means these devices often end up in waste streams where they can be crushed or punctured.

My estimate of 48 million vapes per week entering waste and recycling streams is likely conservative.

Biffa sorted 840,000 vapes in four months at only four locations, averaging 7,000 per day.

Extrapolated across an estimated 10,000 waste and recycling facilities in the US, the total would exceed 70 million vapes improperly discarded every day.

Regardless of whether the real number is 48 million per week or far higher, the scale is staggering.

Battery manufacturers are contributing through voluntary programmes and extended producer responsibility legislation, but the current level of funding and infrastructure is not enough.

Tobacco manufacturers need a seat at the table to address the device design issues that drive so many of these problems.

What I said in my open letter to the tobacco industry

In November I wrote an open letter to executives in the American tobacco industry addressing the growing number of facility fires linked to discarded vaping devices.

In the letter I explained that my data highlights a clear and concerning rise in fires linked to vapes and that this trend poses safety risks to workers and the public as well as financial and environmental harm.

I made it clear that I was not blaming the tobacco industry or suggesting wrongdoing.

Instead I asked for collaboration on reasonable and achievable solutions that can reduce needless losses and injuries.

I explained that the waste and recycling industry cannot solve this problem alone and that tobacco manufacturers can play an important role in several areas.

I outlined the need for public awareness campaigns to inform consumers about proper disposal.

I called for product design changes to allow easy removal of batteries so that they can be safely recycled instead of entering waste streams.

I highlighted the importance of convenient local drop off locations for used vapes.

I emphasised the value of joint research and data sharing to deepen understanding of the problem and support practical solutions.

I explained that lithium ion batteries in vapes are causing billions of devices to enter waste facilities and that major fires linked to these batteries result in an estimated 1.2 billion dollars in damages annually.

I stressed that without the involvement of tobacco manufacturers, the problem will continue to escalate.

I closed by expressing confidence that collaboration between our industries can advance safety and sustainability.

Partnerships and next steps

I am pleased to announce a new partnership between Fire Rover and the Solid Waste Association of North America.

The goal is to provide resources that help waste operators understand and mitigate risks by expanding access to safe and convenient disposal in more communities.

We are also launching the first Anonymous Incident Database for reporting these hazards.

When combined with videos shared by customers, this database will be valuable to insurers, fire professionals and facility operators working to mitigate risk.

As we head into 2026, education, operational best practices and technologies like Fire Rover are working to reduce the risks of major or catastrophic losses across critical waste and recycling infrastructure.

Buyers should be careful.

Early detection and automated solutions are not Fire Rover.

There is no substitute for trained human operators and a comprehensive fire protection strategy that works every hour of every day.
