The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has established a cross-industry steering group to investigate the safety implications of automating existing fire-resisting timber doors.

A fire door’s primary purpose is to act as a barrier in the event of a fire, protecting potential escape routes and limiting fire and smoke spread long enough for those within the affected building to safely evacuate.

Yet the day‑to‑day demands placed on these doors, particularly in high‑traffic environments, make them susceptible to deterioration, misuse and adjustment drift. Over time, even minor changes can compromise compartmentation.

A common failure is simple misalignment. For example, when a door falls out of adjustment, the risk of more significant damage increases substantially. What might have been an easy maintenance task becomes a costly remediation or even a full door‑set replacement.

The purpose of surveys is also often misunderstood by clients themselves. Some are undertaken simply to “tick a box” during annual assessments, with no intention of addressing the findings.

Others are more strategically motivated and aimed at identifying latent defects or supporting claims against installers. Without understanding why a survey is commissioned, outputs become misaligned with organisational goals and compliance outcomes suffer.

The most effective remedy to persistent fire door compliance issues is the establishment of a robust, well‑informed and competence‑driven inspection regime. Competent inspectors apply skills, knowledge, experience and behaviour (SKEB) to provide accurate routes to compliance.

A competent inspection can identify the manufacturer’s certification details on the door leaf and frame, verify that maintenance or past remediation works were completed in accordance with certification and distinguish defects arising from misuse, structural issues, environmental exposure or installation errors.

A competent inspector should not take the easy route of condemning every door or marking difficult ones as “no access.” They must approach each door with an understanding of its role in the building, how it is used and the operational constraints of the client.

In large‑scale replacement projects, such as hotels undergoing refurbishment, competent planning prevents operational paralysis. Coordinating with other contractors, sequencing works to minimise downtime and considering the risks associated with installing doors before or after internal fit‑outs all require experience. These are the nuances that separate basic inspection from holistic, competent fire door management.

Harmony Fire has been appointed to deliver a fire door replacement programme at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as part of an investment in modernising life safety systems across the Great Western Road campus.

The project involves the replacement of over 150 specialist fire doors across three hospital buildings.

Works are scheduled to occur at the Gallery Wing, the Women’s Centre and the campus diagnostic Imaging Department.

The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commissioned the project to upgrade infrastructure while maintaining continuous 24/7 operations at the facility.

The scope of work includes the installation of new ward doors, riser doors and office doors alongside new access control systems.

Harmony Fire developed a twin phased programme in collaboration with the Trust’s Capital and Estates team, Ward Managers and the campus Fire Safety team.

All installations must meet the requirements of the NHS fire code Health Technical Memorandum 05 (HTM 05).

The project focuses on areas specialising in the care of elderly patients and maternity services.

New fire-rated RISER-DOR expands Robust UK access panel range

Fire-rated riser door launch

Robust UK has launched RISER-DOR, a bespoke fire-rated riser door for concealing service units and providing access within vertical shafts.

Robust UK said the made-to-order access panel is designed for electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC systems.

The door is fire-rated to E120 and is described as providing 120-minute fire resistance.

It is intended to contain fire within the shaft for up to two hours and to prevent flames entering the shaft if a fire starts outside it.

Product design and specification

RISER-DOR is designed to sit flush within the wall and includes concealed pivot hinges, a concealed frame and minimal visible hardware.

The door uses a three-point locking system operated with a T-bar key.

It can be polyester powder-coated as standard and finished in any colour to blend with the surrounding wall.

Materials and intended use

Robust UK said RISER-DOR is fully compliant with relevant building regulations and is intended for multi-storey commercial and residential buildings including hotels, offices, hospitals and educational facilities.

The door is made from Magnelis steel and is available with a warranty of up to 10 years.

According to the company, the material forms a self-healing protective layer on cut edges to improve corrosion resistance and extend product life.

Allegion to show fire door hardware at Fire Safety Event 2026

Allegion will present fire door hardware displays, live demonstrations and training information at The Fire Safety Event 2026 at the NEC in Birmingham from 28 to 30 April.

Allegion announced that its team will be based across stands 4/E90 and 4/F20 during the event.

At stand 4/E90, visitors will be able to view working door displays and live demonstrations showing how the company’s security, hardware and door control products operate within a fire door assembly.

The stand will also include practical guidance on tested and certified hardware for timber, steel and composite fire doors.

Products due to be shown include the Boss electromagnetic hold-open cam-action door closer, the fire-rated FinProtect Plus finger protection guards and the Zero International Drop Seal.

Allegion will also demonstrate Briton and Von Duprin panic and emergency exit hardware ranges.

Allegion training and competition at the NEC

At stand 4/F20, Allegion will provide fire door safety guidance and information on accredited practical training courses from Fire Door Maintenance (FDM).

The company is also running a competition linked to an on-stand fire door display.

Visitors who correctly identify faults on the display will be entered into a draw to win a free one-day accredited training course at the FDM training centre.

One winner will be drawn on each day of the event and can attend a course on a date of their choice.

Consultation outlines exemption route for some fire door approvals in England and Wales

Exemption proposal covers fire door work

Fire door installation and maintenance work in England and Wales could be allowed to bypass formal approval from building control bodies under proposals from the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).

Inside Housing reported that the BSR has proposed a self-certification scheme for fire door work in both high-risk and lower-risk buildings.

The change would allow landlords to show that safety work complies with building regulations without going through the BSR gateway process.

The regulator said this would save “significant time and cost for those carrying out this type of work” and keep standards in place while improving transparency.

Last autumn, Lord Roe, chair of the BSR, told Inside Housing that minor work should be removed from the regulator’s oversight.

In January, the government launched a consultation on removing work linked to phone masts and fibre optic cables from the regulator’s scope after it was deemed lower risk.

Exemption sits within wider self-certification review

Inside Housing reported that the proposed changes to fire doors form part of a wider BSR review of self-certification.

Building work can already be self-certified and avoid checks from building inspectors if installers belong to a competent person scheme.

The BSR is reviewing the conditions of authorisation, a set of rules drawn up in 2016 that all competent person schemes must follow.

Its call for evidence covers governance and accountability, along with competence and training standards.

It also covers data reporting and enforcement.

In a statement published alongside the survey, the BSR said recent reviews had shown “persistent weaknesses” in the oversight of groups running the self-certification system.

The regulator also said it will consider how lessons from government retrofit schemes examined in the National Audit Office report from last autumn could be reflected in the conditions of authorisation.

It also referred to findings from the Competition and Markets Authority in 2023 on weak consumer understanding in the green heating and insulation sector.

Inside Housing reported that the regulator also referred to calls from the National Home Improvement Council last summer for stronger safeguards.

Consultation runs for three months

The consultation opened last Friday and will run for three months.

Government recommendations are expected before the end of the year.

Inside Housing also reported that the sector is still waiting for a formal plan to speed up remediation decisions.

Figures published this month showed decision times on these schemes had nearly halved to around 18 weeks for the most recent applications from late 2025 and early 2026.

A backlog remains.

JELD-WEN reaches 25 years with Secured by Design

Timber door manufacturer JELD-WEN has been recognised for reaching 25 years of membership with Secured by Design (SBD) in the UK.

SBD accreditation is used for doors that show enhanced resistance against opportunistic break-ins.

The company said this police recognition is only available to firms whose products meet the standards required by SBD.

Testing and accreditation requirements

JELD-WEN said certification requires PAS24 testing by an independent third party from a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) authority.

The testing includes assessments for resistance against impact and hardware attack.

It also measures manipulation resistance and endurance.

JELD-WEN manufactures doorsets in the UK, including specialist fire doorsets, for new build and retrofit projects.

Investment, manufacturing and quoted response

JELD-WEN said it has invested millions of pounds in the development and testing of its doorsets in the UK.

The company was established more than 60 years ago and is part of the global JELD-WEN group, which operates in 19 countries.

Its UK business supports projects in commercial and residential settings, along with healthcare, education and hospitality.
