Firefighters can take 30 minutes to assist with an evacuation, however, the correct Evac+Chair can evacuate a 24-story building in just 14 minutes*.

Congrats on the new role – what drew you to Evac+Chair?

I’ve always been immersed in industries focused on helping people, particularly through product management.

My career began at a company that produces rehabilitation equipment which instilled in me a passion for creating solutions that genuinely enhance people’s lives.

As my career evolved, I transitioned from product management to leading businesses.

My roles have consistently aligned with my interest in industries that protect, rescue, and support people, often in critical situations.

When I met Ges Wallace, the former MD of Evac+Chair, his passion for the company and the people it helps was so genuine.

It’s hard to say no to a role where you can see the direct impact of the products you’re involved with.

Evac+Chair is a company with a strong culture, a solid philosophy, and products that truly make a difference in times of crisis.

That resonates deeply with me.

I’ve always been drawn to environments where we can provide innovative solutions to real problems.

I know that people in wheelchairs are often at the bottom of the priority list during evacuations.

That’s something I find morally unacceptable.

It’s our duty to make businesses aware of the importance of providing products like Evac+Chair.

We all know someone who might need this—whether it’s a parent, a friend, or a colleague.

Ensuring their safety shouldn’t be an afterthought; it should be a priority.

What are your initial priorities as the new MD of Evac+Chair?

Continuing the excellent work the team has already accomplished and amplifying our efforts to raise awareness—not just of our brand, but more importantly, of the critical need for our solutions.

The team has done a phenomenal job, and I see an opportunity to push even further by engaging more actively with governmental bodies.

Our goal is to advocate for increased investment in safety solutions like ours, not because businesses are reluctant, but because there is often a lack of awareness about the importance of these products.

I believe it’s our responsibility to educate and inform both businesses and end-users about the vital role these solutions play in ensuring everyone’s safety.

How do you plan to drive the continued growth of Evac+Chair around the world?

Our plan to drive the continued growth of Evac+Chair, both in the UK and overseas, is focused on a few key strategies.

A new, comprehensive, and free online centre for building safety information has been launched this month in the UK.

The Building Safety Wiki aims to increase awareness of fire and life safety issues in the planning, commissioning, design, construction, surveying, maintenance, and management of buildings.

As reported by Liz Male, this initiative comes ahead of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s final report and recommendations, intending to share vital knowledge and information about the new building safety regime in the UK, including the Building Safety Act 2022 and related fire safety legislation.

The Wiki offers regular news updates, guidance, factual articles, and expert insights on fire and building safety from various authoritative sources.

Much of its content is sourced from the Designing Buildings Wiki, which has over 7 million users annually, 20,000 registered users, and nearly 300 articles covering building safety topics.

This existing content, accumulated over more than ten years, will be continuously updated and expanded.

Users can easily find relevant information for their projects or disciplines using the Wiki’s search bar or quick links.

AI in industrial sector: Honeywell’s findings highlight growth and potential

Global AI research study reveals new insights

Honeywell has released the findings of its Industrial AI Insights global research study, capturing the current state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the industrial sector, as reported by Honeywell.

The study shows that only 17% of AI decision-makers worldwide have fully implemented their initial AI plans.

However, over 90% are discovering new use cases during the prototyping, launch, or scaling stages of AI implementation.

The research also indicates strong support for AI in industrial applications.

According to the study, 94% of those surveyed plan to expand their use of AI.

Benefits of AI in the workplace

The study highlights several benefits of AI in the industrial workplace.

Efficiency and productivity gains are cited by 64% of AI leaders as the most promising advantages.

Additionally, 60% report improved cybersecurity and threat detection, while 59% see better decision-making due to real-time data generation.

Respondents also noted other benefits, such as increased work flexibility (49%), greater job satisfaction (45%), more time for skills development and creative thinking (44%), and enhanced workplace safety (39%).

Skills development is especially crucial as the workforce faces a skills shortage with retiring baby boomers and fewer replacements entering the field.

AI helps employers upskill and reskill workers more efficiently, transforming industrial jobs and improving both productivity and job satisfaction.

Lucian Boldea, President and CEO of Honeywell Industrial Automation, said: “With AI training and AI as a ‘co-pilot,’ the skills of less experienced technicians can be upgraded more quickly, turning them into elite experts.”

Challenges and future prospects for AI

Despite the enthusiasm for AI, challenges remain in achieving full adoption.

According to the survey, 37% of respondents believe their C-Suite does not fully understand how AI works.

Furthermore, 48% report having to continually justify or request resources needed to implement AI plans.

Billal Hammoud, President and CEO of Honeywell Building Automation, commented: “Businesses recognize that AI is transforming our world and creating new possibilities.

“For building operations, such as hospitals and offices, it is clearly the future.”

The pace of change is expected to be driven by measurable improvements in business performance.

As new AI solutions demonstrate clear benefits, adoption is likely to increase, potentially transforming industrial operations.

Research methodology

Honeywell commissioned Wakefield Research to conduct the survey from April 22 through May 2, 2024.

The online survey involved 1,600 executives from 12 global markets, including the US, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

All respondents are influencers or decision-makers related to AI use within their organizations.

Ministers criticised for slow spending on cladding remediation in Scotland

Cladding remediation programme criticised

Ministers have come under fire for spending just 9% of a special fund set up to deal with dangerous cladding across Scotland, seven years after the Grenfell tragedy, as reported by The Herald.

A total of 72 people lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017, with the cladding believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.

Following the disaster, the Scottish Government set up a cladding remediation programme but has been strongly criticised for failing to act quickly enough to ensure safety.

A May update reveals that only £8,570,790 out of the £97.1 million received from Westminster has been spent to deal with potentially flammable cladding.

The Scottish Government’s Cladding Remediation Programme was established to address fire safety risks and the negative impacts on property transactions due to unsafe cladding.

Spending figures reveal slow progress

In 2021/22, just £241,280 had been spent.

To date, £7.448 million has been spent in the Glasgow area, £592,539 in Aberdeen, £405,726 in Edinburgh, and £87,653 in Dundee.

There are currently only 105 buildings in the cladding remediation programme, and they are part of an assessment pilot.

Safety experts have raised concerns about at least 95 high-rise blocks and nearly 300 other buildings, including schools, hospitals, and care homes, found to contain high-pressure laminate panels.

Further analysis showed that 23 of Scotland’s high-rise buildings have polyethylene type ACM panels, a similar combustible material to that found at Grenfell.

Scottish Conservative shadow social security, housing, and equalities secretary Miles Briggs said: “The SNP are shamefully continuing to progress at a snail’s pace in spending this money.

“It is completely unacceptable that they have still spent such a small sum in removing dangerous cladding from buildings across Scotland, which is continuing to put homeowners at risk.”

Legislative actions and comparisons with England

A Housing Cladding Remediation Bill passed unanimously at Holyrood in May, giving ministers further powers to assess and carry out remediation on buildings with unsafe cladding.

This legislation followed stricter cladding regulations in Scotland, introduced in 2005 after the fatal Garnock Court fire in 1999.

In comparison, the UK Government’s scheme in England has identified 3,824 residential buildings with unsafe cladding, with 42% having started or completed remediation works.

Sean Clerkin, campaign co-ordinator of the Scottish Tenants’ Organisation, criticised the Scottish Government’s efforts: “The Scottish Government’s actions to date have been woefully inadequate in tackling flammable cladding in Scotland when comparing that to the actions taken in England.”

Investigation into Grenfell fire continues

The investigation into the Grenfell fire, which killed 72 people, is ongoing, with final decisions on potential criminal charges expected by the end of 2026.

The Metropolitan Police have generated 27,000 lines of inquiry and more than 12,000 witness statements.

Potential offences include corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “The Cladding Remediation Programme is a demand-led programme.

“Where issues have been identified within a building, we have ensured financial provision has been given and action taken.

“Assessment, mitigation, and where needed, remediation is complex, but we are focused on addressing barriers to delivery, increasing capacity and setting standards for both Scottish Government and developer-led remediation in Scotland.”

Building services bodies collaborate on net zero and safety

UK organisations join forces for net zero goals

Two of the UK’s main building services engineering organisations, BESA and CIBSE, have agreed to collaborate more closely on key initiatives, including the push for net zero in the built environment and the delivery of the Building Safety Act.

As reported by BESA, the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) will undertake a series of joint projects aimed at advancing and promoting the practice of building services engineering.

This collaboration is driven by the urgency to transform the built environment to meet decarbonisation and healthcare goals.

CIBSE chief executive Ruth Carter highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “The building services industry is in greater demand than ever as it increasingly accounts for a much larger proportion of the value of construction and facilities management projects.

“Therefore, our supply chains must be more closely aligned, and the different professions more joined up.”

Focus on building safety and air quality

The organisations will deepen their support for each other’s key events, such as national conferences, seminars, and awards, while continuing their successful collaboration on technical guidance.

They will focus on the Building Safety Act, developments related to indoor air quality (IAQ), and retrofitting existing buildings for decarbonisation and heat networks.

The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the industry and its potential to improve productivity will also be explored.

David Frise, BESA’s chief executive officer, noted: “There is now far greater awareness of the role played by the building services profession in addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges, so this is the right time to deliver a programme of joint initiatives.”

Frise also congratulated Fiona Cousins on her election as CIBSE President, praising her focus on “reimagining building performance” to tackle embodied and operational carbon and address issues linked to poor quality buildings.

Historical context and future plans

The partnership between BESA and CIBSE dates back to the founding of BESA in 1904 by engineers who were also members of CIBSE’s predecessor.

Historically, BESA represented engineering contractors, while CIBSE focused on individual engineers’ interests.

This long-standing relationship underpins their current collaborative efforts.

Upcoming joint sessions on the Building Safety Act will be held at the BESA National Conference on October 17 and at CIBSE’s Build2Perform Live event on November 13-14.

Both organisations have also produced guides to improve professional standards in building ventilation and are working to strengthen links with the healthcare profession.

BESA’s revamped NextGen Network will work closely with CIBSE’s Young Engineers’ Network (YEN) to give young building services engineers a stronger collective voice.

BESA will support this year’s CIBSE Young Engineers’ Awards for the first time and remains an active member of the CIBSE Patrons group.
