The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has published the shortlist for its 2025 Industry Awards following a 44% increase in entries compared to 2024.

According to BESA, the awards now include 27 categories and are open to members and non-members across the UK building services sector.

The winners will be announced at a formal dinner in London on 16 October following the Association’s Annual Conference held earlier in the day.

The headline sponsor of the dinner is Mitsubishi Electric, with further category sponsorship from organisations including Tilbury Douglas, SFG20, Gratte Brothers and Ideal Heating/ACV.

BESA group events manager Charlie Ward said: “We have been completely blown away by the level of interest in this year’s awards.

Holmatro event to bring firefighters to Hannover for global rescue challenge

Holmatro has announced that its third international Rescue Challenge will take place at INTERSCHUTZ 2026 in Hannover, Germany.

According to the company, the event will run from 1 to 5 June 2026 and feature 24 teams from different countries competing in live vehicle extrication scenarios using Holmatro tools.

Each team will be assessed by an independent panel and will receive equipment training beforehand.

Holmatro said the challenge was designed to support firefighter learning and allow participants to demonstrate both technical and medical skills under pressure.

Registration is free and open to international fire and rescue teams until 1 September 2025.

Teams to face 20-minute extrication scenarios with live victim simulation

Holmatro stated that each team will be given a 20-minute extrication challenge designed by the event organisers.

The scenario will involve a ‘live victim’ trapped inside a modern vehicle, with the full details of the simulation kept confidential until the challenge begins.

Holmatro said the rescue tools used will be from its next-generation Pentheon range and will be provided by the company on-site.

An experienced group of international assessors will score each team based on tool use, medical assessment, victim handling and on-scene coordination.

The company added that participation is not limited to existing Holmatro users, and teams using other rescue tools are welcome.

Masterclass and equipment training included as part of entry

Before taking part in their scenarios, Holmatro said that teams will undergo a familiarisation training session as part of its Masterclass Extrication Techniques.

According to the company, this training will be delivered at its outdoor booth near Hall 26 during INTERSCHUTZ 2026.

Holmatro explained that assessors will observe and debrief each team after their challenge to provide feedback on strengths and areas for development.

The company said this structure was intended to promote learning as well as competition.

Each team must include a team leader and a designated medic or first aider, and all members are required to have experience in road rescue.

Entry conditions, language requirements and event logistics confirmed

Holmatro stated that each team must consist of six members and will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.

The company confirmed that English will be the primary language used at the event, and participants must either speak English or attend with an interpreter.

Only 24 teams will be selected, with limits on the number of entries per country and continent.

Holmatro said that PPE must be provided by the participants, and only Holmatro hydraulic rescue tools will be used during the scenarios.

According to the committee, the planned event would have involved around 3,500 competitors from over 30 countries, alongside more than 10,000 spectators.

The Berlin Fire Brigade had been selected to host both the 18th International Firefighting Competitions and the 25th International Youth Firefighting Meeting in conjunction with the brigade’s anniversary.

The CTIF Executive Committee confirmed it is working on alternative plans and will communicate updates when available.

The German National CTIF Committee stated that the application to host the 2026 CTIF Competitions was accepted by the CTIF Delegates’ Assembly on 20 June 2024.

The CTIF Executive Committee confirmed that work is underway to find a new host or revised plan for the next CTIF Competitions.

According to Euralarm, the session will be based on its technical guidance on lithium-ion battery fire safety and electric vehicles in enclosed parking structures.

The webinar will focus on how lithium-ion battery fires can start, and how these incidents can be detected, controlled and extinguished.

Euralarm reported that the session will also examine data comparing fire risk in electric vehicles with internal combustion engine vehicles in covered car parks.

The presentation will be led by Euralarm Technical Manager Carlos Perez and delivered in English.

Technical session based on Euralarm guidance documents

Euralarm stated that the session will use two guidance documents as its foundation.

One is focused on fire protection solutions for lithium-ion batteries.

The other explores safety practices for electric vehicles parked in enclosed areas.

Perez is based in Barcelona and holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

He began his career in the design, certification and testing of gaseous extinguishing systems, later expanding into systems for kitchen fire protection.

According to Euralarm, Perez has taught courses internationally and chairs standardisation committees in Spain linked to both ISO and CEN.

It added that Perez contributes to working groups within ISO/TC 21 and CEN/TC 191, helping to shape European standards on fire protection systems.

The organisation confirmed that Perez will deliver the 8 July session in English.
