Ajax Systems has announced the launch of its EN54 Line fire detection and alarm system in the UK.

According to the company, the new system is fully wireless and designed to support a range of sites including schools, hospitals, offices and heritage buildings.

The firm said the system includes 15 new devices and three accessories, built around the EN54 Fire Hub Jeweller, a wireless control and indicating equipment unit.

EN54 Line devices can be installed in under five minutes and then monitored and maintained remotely or on-site using Ajax’s free mobile and desktop apps.

Wireless coverage and backup designed for large-scale infrastructure

Ajax Systems stated that the Fire Hub Jeweller offers coverage of up to 1,800 metres and can support up to 200 devices and 40 fire zones.

To extend range, the company has developed the EN54 ReX Jeweller, which can be used with up to five extenders to increase system coverage to 35 km².

The Fire Hub includes built-in radio communicators and supports both mains connection and backup lithium-ion batteries that offer 24 to 72 hours of autonomous operation, depending on model.

The company added that the system meets the EN 54 series of standards for fire detection and alarm systems and also integrates intrusion detection and video surveillance capabilities in line with EN 50131 (Grade 2).

Detectors and sounders use dual-sensor smoke chamber and fast-alert VADs

The system includes a series of addressable smoke and heat detectors developed from Ajax’s residential product line.

According to Ajax Systems, the detectors feature a dual-spectrum optical sensor and the HazeFlow 2 algorithm for accurate smoke identification, alongside thermistors for heat detection.

Sounders and visual alarm devices are available as standalone or combined units, with the firm stating that activation occurs in under three seconds.

Devices support audible alerts up to 100 dB and red LED perimeter flashes designed for high visibility in varying conditions.

Integrated automation and visual verification capabilities

Ajax Systems said its EN54 I/O Module (2X2) Jeweller allows third-party device integration through two inputs and two outputs.

It can be configured to activate evacuation systems, control lighting or unlock access points during emergencies, even if the hub is temporarily offline.

Installers can create up to 64 automation scenarios per control unit, and additional Ajax smart relays and switches can be linked to the system for further emergency response automation.

Ensuring fire safety in a hotel setting presents a distinct set of logistical and operational challenges.

Systems must be kept fully functional at all times, yet maintenance cannot interfere with guests or interrupt service.

Access to rooms may be limited, inspections must be discreet, and any fault resolution needs to be tightly coordinated across departments already focused on delivering a smooth hospitality experience.

The Atrium Hotel near Heathrow, with over 570 rooms and a consistently high occupancy rate, encountered these challenges directly.

Its leadership team recognised that maintaining a conventional, manually serviced fire alarm system risked delays, incomplete data, and avoidable disruption.

At the same time, regulatory responsibilities remained unchanged – with inspections, audits, and fault response all requiring clear documentation and traceability.

To resolve this, the hotel adopted a cloud-connected approach using Honeywell’s Connected Life Safety Services (CLSS) platform, installed and integrated by Amthal Fire and Security.

This made it possible to monitor and maintain the system remotely, respond to incidents in real time, and access a complete record of fire safety activity – all while continuing to operate at full capacity.

For those unfamiliar, what is the CLSS platform and how does it work in a hotel environment?

Connected Life Safety Services (CLSS) is our cloud-based life safety platform, designed to simplify and modernise fire system management.

Its ability to provide real-time visibility, automated reporting, and a centralised dashboard, replacing manual checks and siloed documentation, sets it apart.

In line with BS8644-1, this outlines best practices for the digital management of fire safety information across all stages of a building’s lifecycle.

For hotels, facilities and maintenance teams can remotely monitor the fire system and receive instant notifications for any faults or changes in device status.

This allows them to be better informed without disrupting guests or scheduling intrusive room access.

CLSS can also improve coordination between staff and external service providers.

With access to a single source of real-time data, teams can better plan and execute maintenance, moving from reactive tasks to a more proactive approach.

What challenges were the Atrium Hotel facing that led them to adopt this system?

Hotels present some of the most demanding environments to safeguard.

They run continuously, host a high volume of guests and any disruption, no matter how minor, can affect both service delivery and the overall guest experience.

At the Atrium Hotel, one of the largest independent hotels near Heathrow with 573 rooms and steady footfall, these challenges were especially pronounced.

Our task was to support the hotel in upgrading its fire safety systems without interfering with day-to-day operations.

In a high-occupancy setting like this, taking spaces out of use or requiring access to guest rooms wasn’t a practical option.

To address this, we collaborated with Amthal, a trusted Honeywell Gent integrator, to deliver a solution that was technically advanced and carefully managed to avoid disruption.

Integrating CLSS across the hotel’s fire detection systems delivered a connected, cloud-based life safety solution that functions seamlessly behind the scenes.

The result is a hotel that remains focused on the guest experience while having confidence in the reliability and responsiveness of its safety infrastructure.

How did CLSS help the hotel maintain safety without disturbing guests?

At Honeywell, we always emphasise that fire safety isn’t a one-time installation; it’s a continuous responsibility.

While getting the system in place is an essential first step, what matters is how reliably and efficiently it can be maintained over time.

New pilot sees OroraTech data used in US insurance workflows

OroraTech USA has confirmed a new partnership with Opterrix, a geospatial platform used in the U.S. insurance industry.

According to OroraTech, the agreement will see its satellite-powered wildfire detection and AI fire spread simulations integrated into Opterrix’s risk management system.

The partnership launched with a one-year pilot programme involving USAA, making it the first U.S. insurance carrier to access OroraTech’s data via the Opterrix platform.

USAA will test the combined system to explore how real-time wildfire insights might help identify, quantify and reduce risk across its property portfolio.

OroraTech said its modelling, based on terrain, vegetation and wind conditions, enables high-resolution forecasts of fire development in time and space.

Partnership aims to improve insurer awareness and response

Opterrix said the integration provides insurers with visual overlays of wildfire spread, enabling users to assess threat levels for individual policyholders before and during a fire.

According to the company, the new functionality supports workflows across underwriting, claims, and exposure management.

Hochiki installation supports mixed-use redevelopment in Wales

Hochiki Europe has reported the installation of its ESP Addressable fire detection system at Scott Harbour, a redeveloped site in Cardiff Bay.

According to Hochiki Europe, the 90,000 sq ft former office building has been converted into 78 homes and retail units by Rightacres Property Company Limited.

The manufacturer stated that the development needed a detection system that could accommodate both residential and commercial spaces.

It said the ESP system was specified by Huvo and installed by P.E.S. Fire and Security.

The installation included integrated alarm zoning, automatic vent controls, and aesthetic compatibility with the refurbished interior.

System adapted to support layout changes

Hochiki Europe stated that the ESP system was selected for its capacity to operate across different functional areas while enabling ongoing reconfiguration.

The manufacturer said it was designed to provide zoned alarm coverage that can be adjusted without new wiring.

The company explained that this feature supports future changes in tenancy or internal layout.

According to P.E.S. Fire and Security, the flexible design removed the need for repeated system rewiring.

Hochiki said these devices interface directly with automatic opening vents (AOVs), activating them in the event of a fire.

It added that the use of heat detectors, rather than smoke detectors, was intended to reduce false alarms in the residential parts of the development.

This configuration was designed to preserve clear evacuation routes without causing disruption to residents.

According to the company, these measures reflect the differing needs of a mixed-use building.

Integration with wider building services

Hochiki Europe stated that the detection system was fully integrated with Building Management Systems and safety infrastructure.

This included sprinkler controls, pump activation, access control systems, and solar PV technology.

The manufacturer said the aim was to provide a single coordinated fire response strategy across the entire development.

It added that this approach improves safety management across residential and commercial zones.

The integration was designed to enable simultaneous response to fire events and to limit manual intervention.

Installation suited to design-sensitive interiors

Hochiki said that devices from the ESP Addressable range were chosen to align with the interior design.

It reported that product selection prioritised discretion, allowing detectors and sounders to blend with the refurbished aesthetic.

This was considered particularly important in a high-profile redevelopment intended to provide affordable housing.

The system was also configured to minimise disruption to future tenants, according to the company.

Cygnus SmartNet wireless system installed in Cambridge care home

Fire protection system installed in three days at Home Meadow

Advanced Fire Protection SW has installed a SmartNet-Pro wireless fire detection and alarm system at Home Meadow, a retirement property in Cambridge.

According to Cygnus, the installation was completed in three days and required no cabling, due to the 100% wireless design of the SmartNet system.

The retirement home is operated by housing association LiveWest and comprises 50 individual flats.

Cygnus stated that the previous cabling infrastructure was considered too outdated to support modern fire detection systems.

The company explained that a full rewiring was ruled out as it would have caused major disruption to residents.

LiveWest required a certified fire system that could be fitted with minimal intrusion.

Cygnus said the SmartNet-Pro met this need by offering full EN 54 compliance and wireless installation.

Installers report system stability and reduced disruption

Advanced Fire Protection SW has used SmartNet for previous installations, but this was its largest to date.

Lee Wilkinson, Managing Director at Advanced Fire Protection SW, said: “This was our third time using Cygnus SmartNet and our largest installation using the solution to date! We highly recommend SmartNet, it was a suitable choice for Home Meadow due to the fact it’s 100% wireless and a stable, reliable solution, with no requirement for cabling or boosters which causes increased disruption to residents.

“Additionally, as an installer, it is important to us that our customers are happy and LiveWest have been so pleased with the outcome, it is not only our preferred solution, but it has become their preferred solution for other sites too.”

Cygnus stated that the project involved fitting 212 devices.

It added that the pre-configuration and programming of the equipment allowed for rapid on-site installation.

LiveWest expands use of SmartNet across other sites

LiveWest said that the results of the project met both its safety and installation goals.

Oliver Colenso, Property Delivery Team Manager at LiveWest, said: “We specified SmartNet as we wanted a solution that met the highest safety standards and caused minimal disruption – something its 100% wireless design made possible.

“Minimising disruption to residents and workers was paramount, and working alongside Advanced Fire Protection SW, as well as our on-site warden, the installation process was smooth and well-coordinated.

“We’re thoroughly impressed with the outcome, and SmartNet has now become our preferred solution.

“Since this project, we have now installed Cygnus SmartNet into over a dozen of our sites at LiveWest.”

Cygnus said the system is now being considered for other residential schemes operated by the housing association.

Training provided through Cygnus Academy

Cygnus confirmed that training is required for all SmartNet installers.

The company said its training courses are offered at either the Cygnus Academy in Hereford or the Technology and Training Centre in Birmingham.

According to the company, training is split into basic and advanced modules.

Wilkinson said: “All eight of our installers at Advanced Fire Protection SW are certified with the basic training programme. A couple of us have also completed the advanced training course.

“We found the Cygnus Academy informative and helpful for learning the system and software.

“The environment was relaxed and the tutors very knowledgeable, we highly recommend the training and are keen to send more of our installers to receive the advanced course training too.”

Technical specifications of SmartNet-Pro system

Cygnus stated that the SmartNet-Pro system uses its proprietary wireless mesh technology.

According to the company, the system can support 511 devices across 96 zones on a single network.

It also added that up to five control panels can be linked, allowing a total of more than 2,500 devices.

Cygnus said that the system operates on a self-forming, self-healing mesh with multipath redundancy and channel hopping for signal reliability.

The company claimed that SmartNet installations can be up to twenty times faster than wired systems.

Can you share some highlights of your journey with Amthal so far?

Although it’s only been a short time since I joined Amthal in February, I’ve already learned a great deal not just about the business, but also the people who make it work.

What’s impressed me most is the level of professionalism and pride across the team.

There’s a real commitment to doing things the right way right from the start, which creates a strong foundation for delivering quality and building trust with customers.

The openness and support I’ve experienced have made it easy to contribute from the outset and I’m genuinely looking forward to what we can achieve together.

Amthal is celebrating 25 years this year, how has it navigated the industry over this period?

Over the last 25 years, Amthal has responded to industry change by evolving its focus from traditional fire safety to presenting life safety systems.

This reflects how customer needs have shifted, with greater emphasis on integrated, people-first solutions.

We’ve adapted by investing in technology, strengthening compliance and building a structure that supports consistent service across the UK.

What’s driven this progress is a practical mindset: listening, learning and improving.

From day one, we’ve aimed to deliver work we’re proud of, with the flexibility to grow responsibly alongside our customers and partners.

How is Amthal working with the industry to tackle the skills shortage?

We operate in a very busy sector, striving to address the skills shortage in life safety and fire protection by developing skills, building expertise and shaping future leaders in fire and security.

Our new Fast-Track Programme is designed to accelerate technical knowledge, compliance and hands-on experience, with direct involvement from our senior management team.

We continue to invest in apprenticeships and run a rolling recruitment programme to bring in and support new talent.

We’re also proud members of The 5% Club – an industry-led initiative committed to ‘earn and learn’ opportunities – which reinforces our pledge to long-term skills development across the business.

Fike releases Twinflex VAD Sounder Strobe in UK and Europe

Fike product launched for fire alarm compliance in UK and Europe

Fike has announced the release of its new Twinflex VAD (Visual Alarm Device) Sounder and Sounder Strobe across the UK and European markets.

The manufacturer said the product is designed to work with the existing Twinflex 2-wire range and aims to simplify fire alarm system installation.

According to Fike, the product provides both audible and visual alerts and supports BS 5839 Part 1 compliance.

It is powered from the same zone wiring as other Twinflex devices and does not require additional power supplies.

Fike stated that this product is suitable for use in commercial and industrial settings.

Product designed for compliance and reduced wiring complexity

Fike said the Twinflex VAD Sounder and Sounder Strobe meet EN54 Part 3 and EN54-23 requirements.

The sounder strobe combines a visual and audible alert function into a single device that can be installed on the same zone circuit as Twinflex ASD detector/sounders.

This configuration is intended to minimise the need for extra cabling, reducing labour time during installation.

The product is aimed at both new construction and retrofit applications.

Fike described the product as “zone-powered”, which the company said allows for efficient deployment within Twinflex systems.

Motorola Solutions has announced the launch of ‘AI nutrition labels’ to explain how artificial intelligence is used in its safety and security technologies.

According to Motorola Solutions, the new labelling system outlines core components of each product’s AI features, including the type of AI applied, data ownership, human oversight, and the intended use of AI within the product.

The company stated that this initiative is the first of its kind for public safety and enterprise security products.

The labelling approach has been compared to food nutrition labels, providing transparent and concise information for users of AI-enabled technology.

Motorola Solutions said the labels aim to help users better understand how AI is deployed in tools used by emergency services, businesses, and other critical sectors.

Labels aim to explain purpose, control and context

Each AI nutrition label will describe the specific AI model or method in use, including whether it involves machine learning, deep learning, or rule-based systems.

Motorola Solutions explained that the labels also identify who owns the data being processed and what human input or oversight is present in each product.

The initiative is led by the company’s Technology Advisory Committee, which serves as a cross-functional group advising on the ethical and technical aspects of product development.

The company said this committee acts as its “technical conscience” in relation to product ethics, constraints, and broader implications.

According to Motorola Solutions, these labels are intended to provide clarity to end users on how AI functions in each specific context, especially in high-pressure situations where time and information accuracy are critical.

AI technologies to assist, not replace, human judgement

Motorola Solutions stated that the broader AI strategy focuses on “assisted” intelligence, not full automation.

The aim is to provide accurate and actionable information that helps users prioritise tasks during emergencies or complex events.

It said AI can process and relate data faster than individuals, helping responders make informed decisions in high-risk situations.

Aico system selected by Adra for Welsh housing retrofit rollout

Aico solution deployed across Welsh retrofit programme

Adra has adopted Aico’s Connected Home Solution to support its participation in the 2025 Optimised Retrofit Programme, according to an announcement from Aico.

The system will be used to monitor indoor conditions and track energy use across selected homes in Wales.

The Connected Home Solution provides real-time data on temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels.

Aico said the system now also uses the Smart DCC network to monitor energy consumption without needing additional hardware.

The company said more landlords in Wales have adopted the system this year because of its integration with TrustMark for Welsh Government reporting and its lack of ongoing cost commitments.

Collaboration with Adra renewed in 2025

Aico confirmed that its partnership with Adra has been renewed in 2025.

As part of this agreement, Aico will continue to sponsor the training pod at Tŷ Gwyrddfai in Gwynedd.

Tŷ Gwyrddfai is a low-carbon training hub that supports local employment, skills development, and decarbonisation programmes.

The manufacturer explained that the centre plays a key role in preparing the regional workforce for retrofit work and energy efficiency upgrades.

Hands-on training delivered to support rollout

To support implementation, Matt Powell, Relationship Manager for North Wales & West England at Aico, delivered an in-person training session with Adra’s electrical team and subcontractors.

The session took place at Tŷ Gwyrddfai and focused on installation techniques and system operation.

The company said these site visits ensure that all contractors are prepared to install and operate the Connected Home Solution correctly.

Powell said: “Adra have always been on the front foot with their decarbonisation project. Tŷ Gwyrddfai is a game changer in North Wales, upskilling the local community for the road to net zero.

“It’s been great to see a flurry of landlords in Wales this year utilising the system for ORP, with 22 large Social Landlords and Local Authorities actively using the system in Wales.”

Centre of Excellence training also delivered

Aico said Adra’s electrical team also visited its Centre of Excellence in Oswestry earlier in 2025.

The visit included participation in the City & Guilds Assured training course on domestic alarm systems.

The course covers system design, installation, maintenance, siting, interconnection and electrical connection.

The company said it was designed to build technical knowledge and support professional competence in housing safety systems.

Adra’s continued engagement in technical training has been highlighted as part of its approach to upskilling teams delivering retrofit projects.

Role of connected data in retrofit schemes

The Optimised Retrofit Programme is supported by the Welsh Government and aims to improve energy performance in existing housing stock.

Adra is one of the regional housing associations taking part in the programme.

Connected systems are being used to reduce damp and mould risk and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption.

Aico said its Connected Home Solution plays a central role in enabling live data tracking for indoor environments and energy use.

This allows housing teams to monitor property conditions over time and adapt interventions accordingly.
