Cygnus has reported that its wireless fire detection system SmartNet-100 has been installed at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

The project was carried out by Shield Fire & Security during a refurbishment programme that required removal of the site’s previous wired alarm due to asbestos works.

SmartNet-100 was selected because it is a fully wireless, EN 54 certified solution that did not require hardwired interfaces or expanders.

According to Shield Fire & Security, the system allowed for uninterrupted progress with the asbestos works while maintaining full fire detection capability.

The full installation was completed in three days.

Coordinated installation completed without disruption

Shield Fire & Security stated that the hospital remained operational throughout the installation.

The company coordinated with Tilbury Douglas, the site administrators, to ensure no disruption to hospital staff or patients.

The works were divided into two phases: one day to install the system on the ground floor, and two days for the first floor, which covered a larger area.

System built for small to mid-scale projects

Cygnus described the SmartNet-100 system as suitable for small to medium scale buildings.

It operates using a wireless mesh network of radio devices, and features self-forming, self-healing network technology with multiple communication paths.

According to the manufacturer, SmartNet-100 can be up to 20 times faster to install than wired systems.

It includes several of the same functions as the larger SmartNet-Pro system but is designed for simpler deployments.

Fire detection coverage across both floors

SmartNet-100 was installed across the hospital’s ground and first floors.

According to Cygnus, the ground floor installation included 18 heat detectors and 10 manual call points.

On the first floor, 16 heat detectors and three manual call points were added.

Output modules and sound bases were also deployed across both floors to complete the alarm system coverage.

Installer training and future plans

Shield Fire & Security staff completed both basic and advanced training at the Cygnus Academy to qualify as certified installers.

The company said that due to the installation’s success, more of its personnel will attend future training courses to become Cygnus Certified Installers.

Under Direction No. 91, the Commission has directed agencies across Delhi-NCR to prevent fires caused by legacy and fresh municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass.

These measures aim to address rising concentrations of particulate matter and harmful gases linked to open burning.

The Commission’s directions are issued under Section 12 of the CAQM Act, 2021 and are intended to enhance fire safety at sanitary landfill (SLF) sites and dumpsites, with agencies instructed to take comprehensive fire mitigation actions.

Landfill fire prevention and legacy waste management

The Commission has ordered agencies to identify and assess fire risks at all SLF sites and dumps in the Delhi-NCR region.

This includes categorisation, boundary fencing, and the installation of CCTV systems and methane gas detectors.

The Ministry reported that timelines for bio-remediation and legacy waste liquidation should align with submissions made to the Supreme Court.

Fire and Rescue NSW reported that 44 percent of winter home fires in 2024 occurred in dwellings where either no smoke alarm was installed or the device failed to activate.

It added that 42 percent of fires during this period began in household kitchens.

Across all of 2024, there were 3,674 residential fires in NSW, resulting in 25 deaths.

In 45 percent of these cases, no working smoke alarm was present.

Lithium-ion battery safety a continuing concern

The campaign also draws attention to hazards related to lithium-ion batteries.

Fire and Rescue NSW stated that 115 battery-related incidents were recorded in the state during 2024 so far.

Of these, 42 incidents were linked to e-bikes and e-scooters.

The service warned that charging, storing or disposing of these devices incorrectly may cause fires or explosions.

Community support efforts launched alongside campaign

Fire and Rescue NSW said that its crews would be visiting households to carry out free safety checks and offer guidance on preventing winter fire risks, including battery charging behaviour.

Firefighters will also install smoke alarms at no cost where needed.

The public can request a free home fire safety visit and alarm installation at any time through the Fire and Rescue NSW website.

Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib said:
“This winter the NSW Government wants to ensure households have a working smoke alarm installed.

“They can give residents the crucial seconds needed to get everyone out safely.

“In my own community of Bankstown, dozens of fires broke out in homes last winter, and more than half of those homes didn’t have a working smoke alarm installed.

“If you need help, our firefighters are here for you.

To test a smoke alarm please book a safety visit through the Fire and Rescue NSW website or by calling your local fire station.”

Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said:
“The risk of fires in our homes increases during the colder months as we try to stay warm and cook more hot meals.

“Keep looking when cooking – never leave cooking unattended and don’t throw water onto a fat fire as it will intensify the flames – use a fire blanket or extinguisher instead.”

Targeted data shows high-risk areas across NSW

Fire and Rescue NSW published a breakdown of the number of winter house fires in 2024 by local government area (LGA), along with the proportion of incidents in homes without functioning smoke alarms.

Canterbury-Bankstown experienced the most fires (63), with 51 percent of homes lacking a working alarm.

Wollongong had 30 house fires, and 60 percent were reported to have no operational smoke alarm.

Other LGAs with high fire counts included Blacktown (53), Central Coast (45), and Cumberland (43), each reporting a large share of fires occurring in homes without functioning alarms.

Winter fire safety in NSW: Summary

Smart fire safety technology grows in China’s development zones

Qinhuangdao advances smart fire safety manufacturing

The city of Qinhuangdao in China’s Hebei Province is becoming a key base for smart fire safety manufacturing, according to a report from Xinhuanet.

Xinhuanet reported that Gulf Security Technology (GST), a subsidiary of Kidde Global Solutions (KGS), operates a smart production line in Qinhuangdao’s economic and technological development zone.

In its 3,200-square-metre facility, automated systems produce one smoke detector every three seconds with only four workers overseeing operations.

GST was founded in the city in 1993. Wu Haifeng, vice president of KGS Commercial Fire Greater China and general manager of GST, said: “We’ve gone from producing a few basic products to offering end-to-end solutions that cover the entire fire safety lifecycle.”

Wu added: “What started as a local brand in Qinhuangdao is now a global name.”

Companies in the zone exceed 3 billion yuan in sales

Xinhuanet stated that Qinhuangdao is home to 11 smart fire safety companies, each generating over 20 million yuan in annual revenue.

The outlet reported that these companies collectively account for more than 40 percent of China’s smart fire safety market, with combined sales approaching 3 billion yuan.

Xinhuanet reported that the city’s industrial cluster has combined the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and 5G technologies with traditional fire safety manufacturing.

The report added that this aligns with China’s broader strategy to enhance fire prevention by embedding early warning and intelligent systems.

New fire product standards introduced in 2024

Xinhuanet stated that China updated its national fire safety product standards in 2024 as part of its move toward proactive fire prevention.

The updated regulations apply to extinguishers, fireproof shutters, alarms, and evacuation systems.

According to Xinhuanet, three new standards came into force on 1 May 2025.

Wu Haifeng said: “These new standards will further push us to make our products and services more intelligent, precise and efficient.”

Wu added that GST had already upgraded product lines to meet the new technical benchmarks.

Export and sector focus expand KGS activity

Xinhuanet reported that GST now exports to more than 80 countries and regions including Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The report stated that GST’s international expansion aligns with China’s national policy to promote innovation and growth in its economic development zones.

According to Kartik Kumar, president of KGS Global Commercial Fire, the company will increase its presence in domestic sectors including energy storage, petrochemicals, rail, electronics, and data centres.

Kumar said: “We are investing for ambitious growth in China.”

Li Ning, head of the electronics branch of the China Fire Protection Association, said: “Technological breakthroughs in AI and big data are revolutionising how we approach fire safety.”

Li added: “They will push the fire safety businesses and technologies to new frontiers.”
