Hyfire has reported that the Royal Ship Hotel in Dolgellau has undergone an upgrade to its fire alarm system without disrupting daily operations or affecting revenue.

The 19th-century coaching inn had a combination of older Hyfire wireless and hard-wired systems, installed at different times and connected through separate fire panels.

Over 15 years, the system had undergone multiple modifications, and ageing components began causing reliability issues.

The Copper Sustainability Partnership (CuSP) has conducted a series of tests highlighting fire safety concerns associated with plastic pipes.

According to CuSP, three types of plastic pipes burned completely in under ten minutes, releasing toxic gases including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide.

CuSP’s Plastic Under Fire campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with plastic piping materials.

Tests conducted under laboratory conditions simulated real-life fire scenarios, comparing the performance of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), corrugated stainless-steel tubing (CSST), multi-layer composite pipe (MLCP), and copper.

The results showed that plastic pipes released high levels of harmful gases and smoke, potentially reducing evacuation time during a fire.

Toxic gas emissions from burning plastic pipes

The study found that PEX pipes were the most toxic material when burned, releasing large quantities of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

In the tests, PEX pipes completely burned in under three minutes.

CSST pipes were identified as the fastest-spreading material in a fire, producing 761 times more smoke than copper pipes within the first four minutes of burning.

PEX pipes ranked second in smoke density, producing 507 times more smoke than copper.

High smoke levels can accelerate fire spread and hinder evacuation by reducing visibility.

MLCP emits hydrogen cyanide when burned

MLCP, a material gaining popularity due to its low cost and ease of installation, burned in just over five minutes.

CuSP reported that MLCP released hydrogen cyanide, a highly toxic gas, at a concentration of 1.25 mg/m² within eight minutes of burning.

In contrast, copper pipes produced no hydrogen cyanide.

CuSP stated that copper pipes did not burn under test conditions due to their high melting point of 1,085°C, which exceeds the temperatures typically reached in building fires.

The organisation noted that copper pipes released significantly lower levels of toxic gases and smoke compared to plastic alternatives.

“Plastic pipes pose a serious risk both to human life and building structures, producing large amounts of smoke and a series of toxic chemicals in a fire.

“For plumbers, the choice of what pipe they are installing should not just be about what is the quickest or cheapest option – but about the long-term implications for people and the environment.”

The George and Abbotsford Hotel in Melrose has installed an Advanced MxPro 5 fire alarm system to upgrade its fire safety measures.

The hotel, located near Melrose Abbey and St Cuthbert’s Way in the Scottish Borders, required an updated fire alarm system as its existing setup had become obsolete.

Safe Services was contracted to install a four-loop Advanced Advanced announce that they will be at Intersec Dubai 2025MxPro 5 analogue addressable fire panel, integrated with EMS Firecell wireless devices, to provide Category L2 coverage.

Hotel owner Graham Barrett said: “We are very happy with the Advanced system and the installation by Safe Services. It was quite a complex project as the hotel is a big building.

“The previous fire safety system was obsolete, it was a cabled system and the cables were obsolete too.

“It would have been very costly to install a cabled system as it was so complex. We decided on a radio system and that took a week to install.”

New research on carbon monoxide exposure and detection to be discussed

Webinar to share findings on carbon monoxide detection and alarms

The Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) will host a webinar on 6 February 2025 to present new research on carbon monoxide (CO) detection and alarm systems.

The event will cover two research projects: the state of CO alarms in US homes and a review of CO alarm detection thresholds.

The discussion will include insights from a survey conducted by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and a literature review examining CO exposure risk levels for different populations.

Survey reveals gaps in carbon monoxide alarm awareness

In September 2024, the CPSC released findings from a nationwide survey on the presence and functionality of smoke and CO alarms in US households.

The Survey on Use and Functionality of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms (SCOA) in Households included in-home interviews with 1,060 households across the country between 2019 and 2024.

The results indicate that while 90% of respondents consider smoke alarms “extremely necessary,” only 66% expressed the same view about CO alarms.

Additionally, 26% of respondents stated they knew “nothing at all” about CO alarms, and only 55% reported having at least one installed.

These findings, which reflect continuing challenges in CO safety awareness, will be discussed in the webinar.

Review examines carbon monoxide exposure risks

The FPRF is conducting a separate research project that evaluates current literature on CO exposure risks and detection thresholds.

The study aims to identify potential knowledge gaps in how CO exposure levels impact different populations and provide recommendations for future research.
