Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging everyone to make sure they have enough smoke alarms in the home and that they work, noting that it only takes a few seconds and could save lives.

For this reason, the Fire Kills campaign and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging people in Warwickshire to have a think about the smoke alarms in their home.

Councillor Andy Crump, Portfolio Holder for Fire & Rescue and Community Safety, said: “We must all make sure that we have enough smoke alarms to cover our homes and test them regularly, at least once a month.

“If you don’t have enough or they’re not in the right place, you might not be alerted in time. You should have at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home, ideally placed on the ceiling in hallways or landings.

“Placing them next to sleeping areas and in rooms where electrical items are present can also give you another means of warning.

“No matter how many smoke alarms you have, you should test them on a regular basis to make sure they are working properly. In the event of fire, having working smoke alarms gives you time to get out, stay out and call 999.”

To keep people safe, here are some top smoke alarm tips from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue:

  • Test smoke alarms regularly, at least once a month
  • Make sure smoke alarms are fitted on every level of the home
  • Whatever happens, never remove the batteries in smoke alarms unless replacing them. Some require new batteries every year.
  • Plan and practise an escape route and make sure that everyone in your home knows it
  • In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 999
  • Test smoke alarms for those people who are unable to test their own

UK survey highlights lack of carbon monoxide awareness among residents

Norwich and Brighton lead UK cities in carbon monoxide awareness

According to Firechief Global’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Report, Norwich and Brighton have been identified as the cities with the highest levels of carbon monoxide awareness in the UK, both achieving a score of 8.5 out of 10.

In Norwich, 64% of residents were aware of the gas’s traits, such as its poisonous and colourless nature, while 68% recognised the symptoms of exposure, including dizziness.

Similarly, Brighton had the highest awareness of carbon monoxide traits at 68%, with 66% recognising symptoms and 62% understanding the sources of the gas.

Additionally, 78% of Brighton residents reported having a carbon monoxide alarm, ranking third nationwide for detector installation.

London and Birmingham rank among lowest for awareness

The report highlighted that London ranks as the city with the lowest carbon monoxide awareness in the UK, with only 57% of residents aware of its traits and 61% knowing the correct actions to take in case of a leak.

Furthermore, only 68% of Londoners reported having a carbon monoxide alarm installed, the second-lowest percentage across the nation.

Birmingham followed closely, ranking second-lowest.

The report revealed that 58% of Birmingham residents recognised carbon monoxide traits, while 59% were aware of symptoms.

Although 71% reported having an alarm installed, only 60% knew the proper steps to follow if their detector sounded.

Widespread knowledge gaps on carbon monoxide traits and safety measures

The survey revealed that 73% of Brits are unaware that carbon monoxide is flammable.

While most respondents (79%) recognised that the gas is poisonous, 33% were unaware that it is colourless, and 31% did not know it is odourless.

In terms of safety measures, only 57% of participants knew to turn off appliances when an alarm sounds.

While 73% would open windows and 70% would evacuate, just 54% indicated they would contact emergency services—an essential step in responding to a potential leak.

Alarm installation rates and age group disparities

The report found that 72% of UK households have a carbon monoxide alarm installed, leaving 28% without one or unsure if one is present.

Younger adults aged 16-24 were the least likely to have a detector, with 31% stating they did not have one or were unsure.

This figure slightly decreased for those aged 25-34 at 30%, and further declined to 25% among older age groups.

Teledyne Flir to showcase hydrogen safety innovations at Hyvolution 2025

Hydrogen detection solutions featured at Hyvolution 2025

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection and Teledyne Flir will jointly address hydrogen safety at the Hyvolution trade show, taking place from January 28 to January 30, 2025, at Porte de Versailles, Paris, France.

According to FLIR, the companies will showcase their hydrogen-specific solutions, including the MEMS cell, GS700-Hydrogen portable detector, and Spyglass IR3 H2 flame detector.

The event coincides with the celebration of Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection’s 190 years of experience, including 75 years of Teledyne Oldham Simtronics in France and Teledyne GMI in Scotland.

The Spyglass IR3 H2 flame detector, a highlight of the display, features a new functionality to detect hydrocarbons.

It offers improved response times, enhanced immunity to false alarms, and compliance with SIL2 standards.

Advanced hydrogen safety products on display

The exhibit will also include the OLCT 100 series sensors, now equipped with infrared and MEMS thermal conductivity technologies for detecting gases such as methane, hydrogen, butane, and propane.

These advancements provide stable measurements and resistance to poisoning.

Additionally, the MX 62 TP central detection unit will be demonstrated.

This unit manages up to 64 secure channels, offers remote management via an integrated web page, and provides advanced features such as event logging and optional SMS text messaging.

Portable gas detection solutions manufactured in Scotland will also be available, including the GS700-Hydrogen, BM25 multi-gas beacon, and PS200 portable detector.

Support services and demonstrations

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection offers comprehensive services, from commissioning to maintenance, supported by a network of over 50 technicians in France.

Hochiki provides discreet fire detection for Edinburgh luxury store

Hochiki installs advanced fire detection system for Edinburgh retailer

A prestigious store extension in Edinburgh’s St James’ Quarter, home to Multrees Walk’s luxury retailers, has installed an advanced fire detection system from Hochiki to complement its high-end design.

According to Hochiki, GB Integrated Systems (GBIS) installed a bespoke solution using Hochiki Europe’s ESP range.

Mike Gray, GBIS Technical Director, explained the decision to use Hochiki: “We chose Hochiki as it offered a comprehensive solution for this project with a broad selection of devices, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points, base sounders and air sampling system.”

The project utilised over 40 analogue addressable devices, including an integrated air sampling system.

This technology ensures accurate detection in concealed areas, such as ceiling voids, while minimising false alarms.

Space, safety and structural shifts: Patol addresses the fire risks in car parks

Iain Cumner, Managing Director of Patol Ltd, explores the evolving fire risks in car parks, focusing on vehicle design, construction materials and detection technologies

The fire industry is well aware that car parks present their own unique challenges in terms of effective fire safety. On 10 October 2023, that awareness filtered through to a much wider audience with the media reports on the major fire at the multi-storey car park at Luton Airport.

The headline figures helped to put into perspective the consequences: despite the efforts of 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines, who fought for 12 hours to bring the flames under control, more than 1,400 cars were written off, and the ensuing chaos disrupted the travel arrangements of some 34,000 passengers as 220 flights were cancelled.

The aftermath, while perhaps not providing sufficient fuel for front page headlines, still made for stark reading: the airport worked for months with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to resolve claims and the car park rebuild project is not set to be complete until late 2025.

Thankfully such incidents are rare. But there is a growing concern they are likely to become more commonplace. Car parks and, importantly, the vehicles they contain, have changed significantly over the last few decades. Simply looking at the size of modern-day vehicles in comparison to their predecessors makes for interesting reading.

The Mini of 2018, for example, is over 60% larger than the launch model of 1959. The Range Rover, a much bigger car to start with, has still increased by over 40% in size compared to a 1981 model. The consequence is that the space between vehicles has been significantly reduced, this closer proximity making it easier for fires to spread from one to another and turning a minor incident into a major conflagration. The increase in the use of weight-saving plastic components in modern vehicle manufacture has also brought implications in terms of fire load.

The reference to Range Rovers takes us back to the Luton Airport incident. Despite ‘news’ circulating on the rumour factories that are Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) that an electric and/or hybrid vehicle was the source of the fire, it was subsequently proven by Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service to be a diesel-powered vehicle, widely reported to be a Range Rover. While the supposition that it was an electric vehicle proved to be incorrect on this occasion, this brings us onto another important consideration in car park fire safety.

‘Thermal Runaway’

Electric vehicles bring with them their own issues regarding fire risk. The lithium-ion batteries which power them can be subject to a rapid increase in temperature caused by the release of stored chemical energy in the event of a battery fire. This is referred to as ‘thermal runaway’ and can result in an explosive combustion of electrolyte vapour released from the battery. This generates intense heat, as well as highly toxic smoke and can contribute significantly to the potential for multi-vehicle fires.

The current advised approach for the fire service when faced with a fire in an electric vehicle is to allow a controlled burn. However, when the vehicle is within a confined space – a covered car park being a prime example – the fire may need to be extinguished to prevent spread. In an electric vehicle fire twice the amount of water is typically required to extinguish it compared to that for an internal combustion engine.

There is also an increased danger in terms of reignition. Add to that the growing number of electric vehicle charging points being installed in covered car parks, with the potential ignition sources they represent, and it is easy to see why concerns are being raised.

The combined issues of the increase in the adoption of electric vehicles along with the infrastructure to charge them, plus the typical size of a parking space, has been highlighted in a recent report by the ‘Office for Zero Emission Vehicles’ (OZEV) who only last year provided interim guidance. One of the recommendations is that the size of car parking spaces should be increased.

Construction contributing to the problem

It is important to appreciate that it is not only changes in vehicle design that are adding to the risk. Many modern car parks feature sloping floors to help with drainage from storey to storey. An unintended consequence is that this can also create a channel for any fuel that has escaped from vehicles to transfer through the whole structure.

Modern construction methods also focus on speed, providing cost savings as well as minimising disruption in the highly populated urban areas in which car parks tend to be located. This has seen the adoption of metal structures that are quick to erect but become malleable at high temperatures, providing the potential for instability in the event of a fire, particularly if the steel is uncoated.

Linear Heat DetectionCable

Car park fire safety was already becoming a topic of increased interest but what the Luton incident has undoubtedly done is to significantly raise the profile. Quite understandably the potential for sprinklers to become mandatory in multi-storey car parks is being discussed, with the design for the new car park at Luton incorporating a fire suppressant system. I would like to focus on the fire detection side of the equation and will leave it to those more qualified to discuss the pros and cons of extinguishing.

All those involved in the fire safety arena are only too aware that cost is inevitably a consideration in what is effectively a ‘grudge’ purchase. This is certainly true of car parks, with the muti-storey options offering a big area to protect.

This is one of the reasons why Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHDC) is increasingly being recognised as the fire detection method of choice in such applications. LHDC provides a cost effective option, with resettable (analogue) and non-resettable (digital) options available. While cost is a factor in its selection, LHDC is also ideally suited to the harsh environmental conditions that car parks typically present. Vehicle fumes, dust, damp and high humidity can all prove problematic for some forms of detection but they do not affect LHDC. It is also low maintenance and is not prone to false alarms.

Both systems are made up of a control device (optional for digital cable), the cable itself and an End of Line device. The technology is designed to provide early detection of fire conditions or overheating in circumstances where other forms of detection would not be viable due to cost and/or the inability to sustain a stable environment. A single detection zone of LHDC can cover from 1,600 to 2,000 square metres, with an alarm signal sent back from each zone to a control device which can be connected to a conventional fire alarm panel or fully integrated with an analogue addressable system.

Analogue LHDC is primarily used in car park applications.  It is a coaxial cable constructed with a copper-coated, steel central conductor, an inner insulation (dielectric), a tinned copper braid layer and an overall protective sheath. 

In a car park installation, a controller is typically employed and can be fully integrated on either a conventional fire panel or an analogue addressable system.  Monitoring a zonal length of cable for both elevated temperatures and faults, it can be configured to operate in two-wire mode that emulates the operation of conventional heat detectors.

It has the ability to trigger for hot-spot detection on small sections of the cable as well as an abnormal ambient temperature increase across the entire zone. An end of line termination box with test switches provides fault monitoring for both open and closed circuit faults, ensuring full cable integrity.

The cable is typically installed either on the car park ceiling or in a dedicated cable tray, with an air gap maintained between the ceiling or cable tray to ensure that they do not act as a heat sink towards the heat sensitive cable.

Dublin apartment blocks

A good example of how effective LHDC can be in protecting car parks from the threat of fire is a project for two blocks of apartments in Dublin. Custom Electronics, a commercial electronics provider based in Blanchardstown Dublin, offers a range of fire safety systems.  The company chose to fit Patol LHDC fire detection in both the Waterways Apartments in Rathbourne and the Oaks Apartments in Trimbleston, working on the latter project with electrical contractor Abbey Electrical.

Using specialist stainless steel clips and fixings, along with neoprene sleeves with cable ties, Patol’s LHDC was installed in parallel runs above the cars and access routes. Having the everyday appearance of simple cable means that the cable is less likely to suffer from wanton attack by vandals, a common problem for point-type detectors. For additional mechanical strength, it can be supplied in an armoured form.

Reflecting current and future risk

Car parks and the vehicles they contain have both changed significantly in their design over the years. The onus on maximising the number of vehicles a car park can accommodate is only getting stronger, with parking a perennial issue in many of the UK’s towns and cities.

This means that the space allocated per car is unlikely to increase significantly, ensuring that the potential for a fire to spread quickly remains. Nor is the focus on switching from fossil fuelled to electric fuelled cars going away, even if the date for banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars has been pushed back to 2035. The fire threat that this poses has to be considered and somehow reflected in the fire solutions applied.

Regulations and standards are starting to develop but many, as in the case of electric vehicles, are still in preparation or under revision in most countries. The approach to safe car park design needs to consider all the contributory factors, from the building materials employed to the evolving designs of vehicles and the technologies available to protect them.

LHDC is not a panacea for car park fire safety. However, in the aftermath of the fire at Luton Airport, it can provide a significant contribution to the ongoing debate that we need to have to ensure that the risks are properly reflected in the measures taken to protect them.

The challenge

One of the biggest challenges customers face is false alarms. UL knows this too, and through research conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), they have introduced new requirements for smoke detector manufacturers, like Apollo, to reduce the risk of false alarms. At the same time, UL has responded to the evolution of construction methods and materials that can change how fire behaves in a building. This has led to the introduction of a new fire test requiring faster and earlier detection of flaming fires than ever before.

Mitigating against false alarms

An optical smoke sensor must be protected from stray light, dust, and insects. These roles are all fulfilled by the enclosure, which is referred to as the optical chamber. While blocking these potential nuisances, the chamber must freely admit smoke, allowing it to be measured by the optical sensor.

This has led to the unique chamber design of Soteria UL, which collects smoke from the outer edges of the detector, removing impediments to airflow and achieving particularly fast fire detection.

Addressing smouldering fires

Smouldering fires often generate vast amounts of smoke without sufficient heat to propel it into the detector. This problem worsens with the stack effect, where pressure differentials between the ceiling cavity and a room prevent smoke from entering the detector. Soteria UL overcomes this with a patented vent design, which:

  • Allows pressure differentials to be exhausted through a carefully positioned lid hole, ensuring unimpeded smoke flow.
  • Enables condensation from ceiling cavities or cable conduits to escape without harm.

Superior directionality and optics

Uniform performance is critical, no matter the smoke’s direction. UL tests detectors in four orientations, allowing a variation of ±/-50%. Apollo exceeds this by testing detectors at 360 orientations and achieving a variation of less than 10%/ft. This ensures balanced sensitivity, avoiding the need for overly sensitive settings that could trigger false alarms.

Once smoke enters the chamber, the optical sensor measures it while discounting false readings. Apollo’s optical sensor uses an industrially rated InfraRed (IR) light source and a custom Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) to detect scattered light caused by smoke.

Traditional detectors often suffer from IR light reflecting off chamber walls due to dust or insects. Soteria UL uses a serpentine air inlet to block dust and a fine nylon mesh to prevent larger insects. For smaller particles, the chamber design:

  • Utilises a patented light-absorbing surface to prevent IR light reflection.
  • Eliminates surfaces where insects or dust could interfere with the sensor.

This ensures that even under challenging conditions, Soteria UL maintains reliable performance without false alarms.

Cygnus SmartNet-100 installed by Cannon Fire & Security at Charles Pugh Glass

Cannon Fire & Security has chosen Cygnus‘ EN 54 certified and 100% wireless SmartNet-100 fire detection and alarm system to deliver and install a solution in three days, for vehicle glass replacement company, Charles Pugh Glass.

The need for improvement

Charles Pugh Glass needed to replace its existing 25-year-old fire alarm system and asked Cannon Fire & Security to deliver a new system completed with modern standards. Cannon Fire & Security saw the potential of SmartNet-100 on this project. With 14 engineers now trained through the Cygnus Academy, Cannon Fire & Security are certified installers of the SmartNet system.

Charles Pugh Glass, a wholesaler of replacement vehicle glass, recognised the necessity of upgrading its fire detection and alarm systems following a fire risk assessment. The fire risk assessment revealed that the existing systems in their two buildings were no longer compliant with modern regulations and so they knew they needed to make a change.

SmartNet-100 is both EN 54 certified and BS 5839-1 compliant, providing Charles Pugh Glass assurance that the new system meets all relevant safety standards whilst still obtaining insurance requirements.

Charles Pugh Glass made the initial choice to upgrade its systems to satisfy fire risk assessment and insurance requirements but it was the benefits of 100% wireless and minimal disruption that made Cygnus’ SmartNet-100 stand out.

Features of the SmartNet-100

SmartNet-100 stands out because it is ideal for small to medium sized projects where the scalability of SmartNet-Pro is not required. The SmartNet-100 has many features and benefits of the SmartNet-Pro range, including the fact is is an EN 54 certified and 100% wireless fire detection and alarm system.

Built on a combination of radio devices, operating on a self-forming, self-healing wireless mesh network with multi path network redundancy utilising channel hopping technology that enhances reliability and robustness. Alongside all these features, SmartNet-100 is still up to 20 times faster to install than wired systems.

SmartNet-100 was installed into two buildings on the premises: the warehouse and the office and workshop, utilising two SmartNet panels with 75 devices, including smoke detectors, ceiling beacons and input/output units, connected to one panel and 85 on the second system.

Unlike other wireless options on the market, Cygnus provides a 100% wireless solution with no requirement for boosters and the mains power hardwiring which follows, allowing minimal disruption during an installation period of just three days.
