The system was deployed across three major projects: the Olympic and Paralympic Village, the Adidas Arena, and the Aquatics Centre.

The Olympic and Paralympic Village, inaugurated on February 29th, 2024, is set to host athletes during the Paris Games.

The village, spanning three parts of Paris, will accommodate over 14,000 athletes and their entourages during the Olympics and 8,000 for the Paralympics.

Designed to meet high environmental standards, it aims to provide top-notch services for athletes and a sustainable legacy for the Seine-Saint Denis community.

During its construction, the WES3 system ensured early fire detection and rapid response, crucial for worker safety.

Adidas Arena benefits from advanced fire safety solutions

The Adidas Arena, a multifunctional space inaugurated on February 11th, 2024, was built for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Located north of Paris, it will host badminton, para-badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, and para-lifting events.

Post-Olympics, it will continue to serve as a venue for various cultural and sports events.

The arena’s construction incorporated sustainable design elements, including recycled materials and extensive vegetation.

The WES3 wireless fire alarm system aligned with these sustainability goals by providing robust fire protection during construction.

This ensured the safety of workers and the project’s timely progress.

Aquatics Centre construction supported by WES3 system

The Aquatics Centre, featuring a 50-meter pool and a diving pool, is another key venue for the Paris 2024 Games.

It will host water polo, diving, and synchronized swimming competitions and be transformed into a boccia stadium for the Paralympics.

Recently appointed as Global Head of Fire and Life Safety Business at Ajax Systems, Paul Pope is no stranger to the technological advancements and industry standards within the fire safety sector.

With a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence, Paul has navigated the complexities of fire safety, from product development to market strategies.

His dual role as a board member of the Fire Industry Association (FIA) adds another layer of influence, helping to shape policies and standards that impact the industry globally.

In this exclusive interview, IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Paul to discuss his roles, responsibilities and the future of fire safety.

What is your role at Ajax Systems and your responsibilities as a board member at the FIA?

My role involves collaborating with the industry, including Ajax and other countries, to manage everything related to fire safety.

This includes standards, product development, markets, and sales channels.

Essentially, I act as an advisor to ensure that we are focusing on the right areas.

My knowledge of international sales standards and markets benefits the entire business.

While Ajax is an integrated systems company, the fire safety sector is quite specialised.

My aim is to work with the teams to accelerate the development of this speciality within the group.

As a board member of the Fire Industry Association (FIA), my focus is on liaison.

I work with various councils within the FIA on key issues, which can range from government-related matters to industry standards.

My role involves coordinating with other bodies on initiatives for the FIA, alongside the CEO.

Additionally, this also involves general board responsibilities, including meetings, strategies, and addressing any issues the FIA faces.

 The FIA’s work is broad and touches almost every aspect of fire safety in the UK, and now internationally, with collaborations in Cyprus, India, the Middle East, and Dublin, Ireland.

What prompted Ajax Systems to join the FIA?

Ajax Systems is very serious about fire safety.

We’ve developed an excellent international product range, specifically designed for the residential market, which includes not only fire safety but also life safety products , including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide detectors.

The FIA is the leading organisation in Europe for fire safety, and Ajax wants to be part of that.

Given that we design and manufacture life safety products, it’s crucial for us to achieve professional status with the FIA, and to be involved in the sector as a leader.

Joining the FIA allows its members to help shape the future of fire safety and collaborate with other professional organisations within the association.

The great advantage of the FIA is that it brings together a wide range of companies in the sector, allowing us to work collaboratively for the betterment of the industry.

The primary objective within the FIA is to represent our industry at the highest levels and aiming for excellence within the sector, we enable everyone to be successful, ultimately creating a safer world.

Working within the FIA means working for the greater good—improving standards, competency, training, knowledge, and the overall sector.

Life safety is important, and we can’t afford to get it wrong.

Therefore, we must learn from the FIA’s experience, just as the FIA can learn from us through a collaborative approach.

How do Ajax Systems’ values and strategic goals align with the mission and activities of the FIA?

Education and competency are crucial for us, and we strongly emphasise it.

The FIA has been pioneering in improving competency and training, elevating the skills of engineering consultants, risk assessors, on-ground engineers, and end-users.

This aligns perfectly with Ajax’s values.

We have a fantastic product range, and we want engineers to be well-trained and professional in using our products.

Working alongside the FIA to promote their training and competency initiatives is why we are involved.

For us, ensuring the complete lifecycle of our fire safety products is managed professionally is vital.

The FIA’s focus on training is something we highly value.

For instance, they offer a comprehensive training courses on non-commercial (residential) design, installation and commissioning standards, BS 5839-6, which we believe should be promoted in the market.

By doing so, we can raise the bar for professional standards in the residential fire and life safety market.

How do you evaluate the current state of fire safety standards in the UK?

Recent events have made it clear that fire safety is now being taken much more seriously in the UK.

People understand the need for competency, and training is essential for ensuring both individuals and companies meet required standards.

Technology is advancing rapidly, often outpacing current standards.

The FIA holds a valuable position in providing interim knowledge and guidance as these changes occur.

By monitoring and addressing new developments, the FIA can pass on crucial information to its members and the wider audience.

Connectivity and the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and now the emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) are particularly relevant.

The FIA is involved in this evolution, and so is Ajax, given our focus on high technology.

Our goal is to make advancements that maintain and improve fire precaution measures, ensuring that new developments make things safer, not less secure.

What initiatives does Ajax Systems plan to undertake as part of its partnership with the FIA?

At the moment, our main objective is to work with the FIA to promote life safety within the residential sector.

This is an important area for us, as well as for the FIA, which has a great course on residential fire safety.

One crucial aspect of this partnership involves liaising with the government on housing issues, to continue to lower the incidence of fire-related injuries and deaths.

By collaborating more closely with the industry in this area, we can make a significant impact.

Since joining Ajax, I have become more focused on advocating for residential standards, and I believe there is much more we can achieve together to improve social, residential life and fire safety.

What role do you believe innovation plays in advancing fire safety standards?

Innovation plays a crucial role in advancing fire safety standards, particularly with emerging technologies.

At Ajax Systems, we bring our extensive experience with cutting-edge technology to the table.

We will work collaboratively with other FIA members to produce articles and shape future standards.

The FIA works in association with organisations like Euralarm, which is a strong advocate for connected technology.

There is substantial documentation on how to use and apply these technologies safely.

It’s essential to provide regulation, and guidance on the safe use of technology, and the FIA is actively involved in this area.

As technology evolves, standards will need updating, and we will be involved at the ground level along with other FIA members, to ensure they are as effective as possible.

Our aim is to enhance fire safety for the future.

Reflecting on the journey since the release of FireProtect, how has Ajax Systems’ approach to product development evolved?

Ajax’s product development is outstanding, and it’s one of the reasons I joined the company.

Watching the FireProtect range of products evolve from outside the company was impressive, but now, being inside Ajax, I can see even more of what has gone into developing this product line.

It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.

Our approach to product development has evolved significantly, particularly in terms of integration.

Ajax products integrate seamlessly across various platforms, which will offer new dimensions in the future.

The technology and research invested in FireProtect 2 make it a crucial product line for life safety, addressing many industry issues, such as steam rejection, which has been a significant problem.

Ajax has effectively tackled these issues, enhancing asset management and detection status through remote monitoring.

This capability ensures that potential failures are detected before they happen, allowing for pre-emptive action.

The ability to communicate with and monitor products globally is why I believe this will shape the future of the industry.

Looking forward, what are the main challenges and opportunities you foresee in the fire safety industry?

The fire safety landscape is changing rapidly, and we must adapt to these changes.

For example, the rise of lithium-ion batteries in the car industry has introduced new fire risks, such as those related to charging batteries in buildings.

This is evident from incidents like the car park fire in Luton.

As we integrate more battery-powered vehicles into buildings, we need to address these new risks.

One significant challenge is ensuring that government regulations keep pace with technological advancements.

For instance, the grey market of second-hand batteries could pose unknown risks if their status and safety aren’t properly monitored.

Automation and the reduced need for human intervention will also impact the industry, necessitating updated risk strategies.

The Grenfell Tower disaster marked a significant change within the fire sector.

As technology and the use of buildings evolve, we must remain vigilant and adaptable.

Ajax Systems, in partnership with the FIA, and its members, aims to influence these changes positively by promoting innovation and ensuring that our practices and regulations keep up with new developments.

While we don’t have all the answers yet, we are committed to improving fire safety standards and addressing emerging challenges.

Are there any other issues or initiatives that are particularly important to you within the fire safety industry?

Something I’m extremely passionate about on a personal level is firefighter protection.

This includes their well-being, managing contamination levels in buildings, and decontamination processes.

This is also very important to the FIA, which is dedicated to looking after the welfare of our front line professionals.

Ensuring that buildings and their contents are safe for firefighters is crucial so they can do their jobs without unnecessary risks.

This is a personal passion of mine.

It’s important to raise awareness about the real dangers firefighters face and to promote measures that protect them.

We must prioritise the safety and well-being of those on the front line.

Euralarm board joins AI pact to support AI Act measures

Euralarm’s commitment to AI Act implementation

The Board of Euralarm has decided to participate in the AI Pact, as reported by Euralarm.

This initiative supports organisations in preparing for the AI Act measures.

Recently approved, the AI Act includes provisions that will apply shortly after its adoption.

Some requirements, particularly those concerning high-risk AI systems, will come into effect at the end of a transitional period.

European Commission’s AI pact initiative

The European Commission is promoting the AI Pact to encourage voluntary industry commitment to the AI Act.

The first call for interest in November 2023 received responses from over 550 organisations across various sectors and countries.

The AI Office is developing the AI Pact around two main pillars.

The first pillar engages the AI Pact network, promoting best practice exchanges and providing practical information on AI Act implementation.

The second pillar urges AI system providers and deployers to prepare early for compliance with legislative requirements.

AI pact meetings and standards development

Meetings of the AI Pact will discuss standard development by CEN/CENELEC, expected to be completed by February 2025.

A limited Q&A session will address governance topics.

High-risk AI systems will require CE marking, and companies must register in a publicly accessible database.

There will not be a specific label for AI conformity.

Greece invests €20 million in advanced wildfire monitoring with OroraTech

Greece’s €20 million satellite investment for wildfire monitoring

Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance has announced a €20 million investment in a new wildfire monitoring system in collaboration with OroraTech, a thermal intelligence provider, and a consortium of Greek subcontractors.

The system will include ground systems, processing services, and a constellation of thermal imaging satellites to monitor the entire country for wildfires.

This initiative is part of the European Space Agency’s development contract, led by the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hellenic Space Center.

The investment aims to address the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires in Greece.

Greek Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou stated: “By investing specifically into orbital technology, we are making a real difference in monitoring wildfires that threaten human lives, our ecosystems, and our economy.”

OroraTech’s system is expected to enhance situational awareness by scanning for fires from orbit.

OroraTech’s role and partnerships

OroraTech, founded in 2018 and based in Munich, uses infrared data from satellites to provide wildfire intelligence to government and private industry customers.

The company, along with its Greek partners, secured the contract through an open tender by the European Space Agency to support the Greek National Satellites Space Program.

Simonetta Cheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes at the European Space Agency, commented: “The capability OroraTech developed through the agency’s funding is a powerful example of space technologies providing immediate and critical benefits here on Earth.”

OroraTech will work closely with several Greek universities and industry partners, including the National Technical University of Athens for data product algorithms, the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens for space sensor development and calibration, Satways Ltd. for product interoperability, and Attisat S.A. for building a Greek-based ground station.

Future prospects and local impact

The project will see OroraTech making significant investments in Greece over the coming years, including opening an operations hub in Athens for its space sensor fleet and a development team dedicated to advanced infrared sensing technology.

CEO and CTO of OroraTech, Martin Langer, noted: “The world-class know-how of our Greek partners for thermal sensing is instrumental in providing the best solution for this country.

“Greece will be the first country worldwide to have a national satellite-based wildfire system in place.”

As Greece prepares for another hot summer, the implementation of this system is timely.

In recent years, wildfires have affected around 2 percent of Greece’s total land area.

The country’s rough mountainous terrain and numerous islands make fighting wildfires particularly challenging, necessitating more advanced detection technologies.

The data services provided by OroraTech will be directly connected to Greek emergency services, leveraging the expertise of Greek universities and industries.

This integration is crucial for monitoring fires in remote and mountainous areas where communication is limited.

The advanced detection technologies are expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wildfire management in Greece.

The collaboration between OroraTech and Greek institutions highlights the importance of combining local expertise with advanced technological solutions.

The success of this project could serve as a model for other countries facing similar wildfire challenges.

Vox Ignis MD Anthony Smith confirmed as chair of BSI FSH/12/5 committee

Anthony Smith to lead BSI committee on voice alarm systems

Anthony Smith, managing director of Vox Ignis, has been appointed Chair of the BSI FSH/12/5 committee.

This committee oversees the codes of practice for the design, installation, servicing, and maintenance of voice alarm evacuation systems and emergency communication systems in buildings.

As Chair, Smith will also participate in FSH/12, which co-ordinates the UK’s involvement in the BS EN 54 series of standards.

Smith’s extensive experience in audio technology and legislation spans over 30 years, during which he has contributed significantly to standards development within CEN and CENELEC.

Background and experience

Smith’s appointment follows years of active involvement in developing both British and international standards.

He has been a member of the FSH/12/5 committee for over 15 years and has served as a UK expert on the CEN/TC 72 Working Group, focusing on voice alarms, loudspeakers, sounders, and beacons.

Additionally, Smith has held roles such as President of the Institute of Sound & Communications Engineers and membership in the Audio Engineering Society.

He was the Convenor of the EPL/100 drafting panel responsible for BS 6259 and CLC/BTTF 133-1, which developed EN 50849 sound systems for emergency purposes.

Smith’s perspective on his new role

Smith expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I’m delighted to be continuing to contribute to the important work of FSH/12/5 and honoured to have been confirmed by BSI as Committee Chair.

“Voice communications are increasingly recognised as the best way to manage people in an emergency, and the standards and codes of practice regimes around voice alarm, emergency voice communications, and assistance alarms are changing relatively quickly as our built environment and the systems protecting it become more complicated.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor: “I would like to thank the former chair Andy Scott for his work as chair over many years.”

Firefighters in Scotland respond to fewer false alarms

Reduction in false alarm callouts

Firefighters across Scotland are attending more than 50 fewer false alarm callouts each day.

As reported by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), this follows an operational change where crews no longer respond to automatic fire alarm (AFA) signals at commercial buildings such as offices, shops, and factories unless a fire or sign of fire is confirmed.

Previously, firefighters were automatically mobilised to around 28,000 false alarms annually, resulting in more than 50,000 unnecessary blue-light journeys known as Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals (UFAS).

Operational changes and new approach

The new approach involves Operations Control call handlers asking a series of questions to determine whether an emergency response is required before mobilising any fire appliances.

New figures show that this method has reduced unnecessary UFAS callouts for firefighters by an average of 52 every day.

As SFRS marks one year since the policy’s implementation, the Head of Prevention, Protection, and Preparedness states that this change has helped free up firefighters to attend genuine emergencies, undertake community safety work, and engage in training activities.

Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Iain MacLeod said: “We exist to keep the people of Scotland safe and it’s imperative that we ensure our staff and resources are available when needed most.

“Be rest assured that we will always attend every emergency and strive to do so as quickly and effectively as possible.

“This change has dramatically reduced the number of unnecessary callouts over the past year, but we know there is more work we can do.

“Previously, false alarms accounted for almost one-third of our activity across Scotland, placing a drain on frontline services.

“It also increased risk to road users, had a negative environmental impact due to the volume of response, and caused sustained interruption to businesses.

“This change is undoubtedly having a positive impact on reducing unnecessary operational demand, freeing up our firefighters to attend genuine emergencies and engaging with local communities on essential fire prevention work.

“We must thank businesses and dutyholders for their support and cooperation in ensuring the safety of their premises and contributing to this positive change.”

UK renters lack smoke alarms, Firechief Global survey reveals

Firechief Global survey highlights smoke alarm gap in UK rental homes

A recent survey conducted by Firechief Global, the UK’s fastest-growing fire safety company, has revealed that over 2 million people living in rented accommodations in the UK do not have a smoke alarm fitted.

Firechief Global’s findings indicate that 17% of UK renters lack smoke alarms.

Given that 18.8% of the UK’s population of 67.8 million are renters, this percentage equates to just over 2 million individuals.

As reported by Firechief Global, Greater London is the most affected, with nearly a quarter (24%) of all households, both renters and owners, without smoke alarms.

In Northern Ireland, the figure stands at 22%.

In response to these findings, Laurie Pollard, Managing Director at Firechief Global, said: “In light of these alarming findings, all landlords must check their properties and ensure that the correct fire safety measures are in place to protect tenants first and foremost.”

The importance of proper smoke alarm installation

In the year 2022/23, there were 321 fire-related fatalities in the UK.

The Government’s Fire Kills campaign highlighted that individuals are ten times more likely to die in a fire if their home does not have a working smoke alarm.

Besides the absence of smoke alarms in 2 million rental properties, the survey pointed out that many smoke alarms are not tested regularly.

While tenants should check alarms frequently, landlords should demonstrate the testing process upon tenant move-in.

During 2020/2021 in England, there was a 28% failure rate of smoke alarms.

This rate was higher in Scotland at 39%, and in Wales, it reached 50%.

Laurie Pollard emphasised the issue: “The importance of installing and maintaining working smoke alarms in every home cannot be overstated.

Landlord responsibilities under the law

While no specific type of smoke alarm is mandated, it is recommended that landlords choose alarms based on the needs of their buildings and tenants.

Enforcement and penalties for non-compliance

Local authorities are responsible for upholding these regulations and issuing penalties for non-compliance.
