The Minns Government has allocated $13 million to safeguard plantation timber in southern New South Wales from bushfire risks.

According to the New South Wales Government, the Plantation Fire Protection funding package will support 15 projects across the Murray region, covering areas such as Greater Hume, Snowy Valleys, Cootamundra-Gundagai, Albury, and Wagga Wagga.

The projects include fire detection cameras, aerodrome-based water supplies for firefighting, upgraded fire trails, and remote weather monitoring systems.

These initiatives aim to improve fire prevention, hazard reduction, and response capabilities while offering enhanced protection to plantations, local businesses, and communities.

Expert-backed measures for regional fire protection

The selected projects were identified by a panel comprising government and industry experts.

This panel included representatives from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), and the Softwoods Working Group.

Their analysis focused on addressing current gaps and opportunities in fire protection.

Stakeholder input from plantation owners, local councils, Forestry Corporation, and other fire authorities shaped the final selection of projects.

Projects include funding for upgrades to key fire trails, enhancements at Tumut Aerodrome to support aerial firefighting, and new equipment such as high-volume water pumps, bulk tankers, and an all-terrain firefighting machine.

Projects to enhance community safety

While the projects aim to safeguard critical timber plantations, they also enhance fire safety for surrounding communities.

For example, the addition of three new fire detection cameras will expand monitoring capabilities in the Murray region.

Firefighting water storage upgrades and improved radio communications for plantation workers are among the other initiatives designed to bolster safety and emergency response.

The DPIRD will administer these projects as a pilot program, with monitoring and evaluation to assess the potential for statewide expansion.

Minister and local representative statements

Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, emphasised the importance of these projects: “The Murray region was hit particularly hard in the 2019/20 bushfires, and we lost a significant stock of our future housing timber – we can’t afford to lose anymore.”

She added: “These projects will play a vital role in protecting the remaining critical timber supplies in the Murray region as we move into the 2024-25 bushfire season and beyond.”

Independent Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr, welcomed the measures: “Memories of the disastrous Dunns Road fire five years ago are still fresh in local minds, so these measures to reduce the fire risk in the Snowy Valleys are very welcome.”

Sunny Sethi, founder of HEN Nozzles, discusses the evolution of fire suppression tools shaped by science and firefighter feedback for today’s challenges

In the face of increasingly complex and devastating fires, one engineer is working to bring firefighting equipment into the modern age.

Sunny Sethi, founder of HEN Nozzles, started his company in 2020 after witnessing the destructive wildfires that ravaged California.

Realising that firefighters were battling these blazes with outdated tools, Sethi set out to develop equipment designed for today’s challenges.

“I started HEN after seeing the impact of wildfires on communities,” says Sethi.

“When I spoke with firefighters, it became clear that while the nature of fires has changed, the equipment used to combat them has not kept pace.”

HEN Nozzles has recently secured $8 million in funding to fast-track its cutting-edge fluidics technology, capable of extinguishing fires 300% faster while using 67% less water.

This seed round, supported by federal grants, venture capital, and angel investors, will fuel the development and deployment of HEN’s revolutionary fire suppression tools.

Supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, HEN Nozzles has focused on understanding the science behind fire suppression.

By studying how water interacts with fire, the company has developed new nozzle technology aimed at enhancing the efficiency of firefighting efforts.

Redesigning the fire hose nozzle

Traditional fire hose nozzles often produce water streams that lose effectiveness before reaching the core of a fire.

“Water can break into small droplets that are carried away by the wind,” Sethi notes.

“Even when it reaches the flames, it might not absorb enough heat before falling to the ground.”

Through computer simulations and extensive research, HEN Nozzles identified optimal droplet sizes, velocities, and stream geometries to maximise heat absorption.

The result is a patented blade nozzle that generates a water stream with larger droplets, extended reach, and an adjustable pattern.

“This design allows firefighters to extinguish fires more quickly using less water,” says Sethi.

“It helps them manage situations more effectively while reducing environmental harm and property damage.”

Collaboration and feedback from firefighters

Input from active-duty firefighters has been central in developing HEN’s products.

“We work closely with those on the front lines,” Sethi emphasises.

“Features like the adjustable stream patterns came directly from their feedback.”

Ray McCormack, a former lieutenant with 39 years of service in the New York Fire Department, has been an advisor to HEN Nozzles.

“Firefighters know what they need,” McCormack says. “HEN listens to us, and that shows in their designs.”

Adjustments such as refining the nozzle’s handling to reduce fatigue during prolonged operations were made based on user input.

McCormack points out that even the shut-off handle was designed to provide a comfortable grip while fitting into existing hose beds.

“HEN’s products are shaped by the people who use them,” McCormack adds. “That makes a real difference.”

Testing, certification, and meeting diverse needs

To ensure safety and effectiveness, HEN Nozzles conducts extensive testing.

“We’ve carried out live fire burns in training centres and acquired houses,” Sethi explains. “We use thermal cameras to analyse performance and collect data.”

All HEN nozzles meet standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1964 for spray nozzles and appliances.

“Our research is backed by the National Science Foundation, which adds credibility to our work,” says Sethi.

The products undergo mechanical and thermal tests to ensure they meet durability standards.

“Firefighters rely on their equipment in critical situations,” Sethi notes. “We have to be certain our tools will perform under pressure.”

HEN Nozzles aims to serve both wildland and urban fire departments. “We offer combination smoothbore nozzles with different flow rates,” Sethi says.

“Firefighters can adjust the pattern based on the situation they face.”

In wildland settings, the blade pattern creates a concentrated linear stream, allowing for quicker coverage of larger areas.

In structural fires, the pattern helps cool surfaces and gases, leading to faster suppression.

“Our goal is to provide tools that adapt to different environments,” Sethi explains.

“Firefighters encounter a variety of challenges, and their equipment should be versatile.”

McCormack adds: “All HEN nozzles are designed with firefighter input from the beginning.

The compact design and reduced weight came from their recommendations.”

Expanding reach and addressing environmental concerns

HEN Nozzles’ clients include organisations such as CAL FIRE, the U.S. Marine Corps, and several fire departments across the country, including those in Kansas City, Ontario, Maui, and Sacramento.

“These partnerships have been essential in refining our products,” Sethi notes. “We aim to reach an additional 1,000 departments in 2025.”

The recent funding will enable HEN Nozzles to accelerate development and production.

“We plan to expand our team, invest in further research, and increase manufacturing capacity,” says Sethi.

Water conservation is a significant issue, especially in regions prone to drought.

“By increasing suppression rates, we use less water,” Sethi points out.

“This conserves resources and lessens the environmental harm of firefighting operations.”

Quicker suppression also means fewer emissions from prolonged firefighting efforts. “Reducing the duration of fires benefits everyone,” Sethi says.

Challenges and looking ahead

Progress in firefighting tools has been slow, partly due to reliance on established systems.

McCormack believes that the environment in which firefighters operate has changed, and equipment needs to reflect that.

“Firefighters are using systems that aren’t as efficient as they could be,” McCormack says.

“Manufacturers haven’t always recognised the need to change. HEN is responding with technology that brings more efficiency.”

Sethi acknowledges that introducing new tools requires demonstrating clear benefits.

“Firefighters need to trust that new equipment will help them do their jobs better and more safely,” he says.

“We focus on providing evidence through testing and feedback.”

Sethi’s journey began with witnessing the devastation of wildfires in California.

“I saw how communities were affected,” he recalls. “It was clear that something needed to change.”

By combining scientific research with practical feedback from firefighters, Sethi hopes to make a meaningful contribution to the field.

“Our mission is to provide tools that help firefighters meet the challenges they face today,” he says.

With the support of the firefighting community and new funding, HEN Nozzles is planning for the future.

“We’re committed to continuous improvement,” Sethi says. “There’s always more to learn and ways to make our products better.”

McCormack shares this optimism. “HEN’s approach is making a difference,” he says.

“Their technology brings efficiency that can benefit firefighters everywhere.”

Can you tell me about Reacton’s metrology lab and its impact on product quality?

The metrology lab is a specialised facility for precise measurement and quality control, providing capabilities that many competitors and subcontracting engineering companies lack due to insufficient scientific tools.

To control quality to an exceptional standard, we needed the same measurement tools used in making our parts—measuring dimensions, surfaces and other physical aspects of them daily.

The metrology lab enables us to measure and control the goods we receive and those we make or machine in-house.

It’s also a diagnostics tool for finding items that may need adjusting.

If you make mechanical parts, it’s your diagnostics laboratory.

We’ve invested about a quarter of a million pounds in measurement and quality control equipment.

This allows us to build a stable understanding of the parts we receive and make.

Over time, it enables us to detect problems like dimension creep.

The equipment has enabled our team to learn and develop themselves.

They’ve learned more from measuring and monitoring than from making the parts.

We measure with micron accuracy—a micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre.

Knowing precisely what something is allows the team to make good decisions about what to do with that part.

How does the metrology lab ensure precision and reliability across Reacton’s products?

Everything we receive and make is measured precisely against every drawing.

We’re not just talking about dimensions but also measuring things like surface finish, which is crucial for seals.

If you need to keep gas in a cylinder, you need to know how the seal performs over time.

We’ve introduced helium leak detection equipment at multiple levels, which complements the metrology lab.

It allows us to measure gas leakage rates precisely. We can determine if a leak will take a day to drain a volume or 120 years.

This means every product that leaves our factory has been precisely tested and diagnosed to the standard we intended.

We’re not just assembling something and assuming it works over time; we’ve got exact numbers for days, months, years, or leak rates that meet our tolerances.

Having the equipment to diagnose what we’ve made ensures we maintain high precision and reliability across our product range.

How does the lab drive innovation in Reacton’s fire suppression systems?

The metrology lab allows us to control our tolerances more precisely.

By measuring everything accurately, we can reduce our tolerances, leading to better-performing products.

The team learns more from measuring and monitoring, which contributes to innovation.

How do you provide precision-engineered solutions to cost-sensitive markets worldwide?

The key is the standardisation of products.

Our concepts and intellectual property are based on common items.

Where other businesses might use different products for different markets—like vehicle fires, control panels, kitchens, or CNC machines—we use the same products across applications.

This allows us to focus our engineering control around these products.

Instead of making multiple different valves, we make one main common valve.

This means we can centre our manufacturing around one product, honing the quality and producing in volume.

Hoses, valves, nozzles, fittings and bracketry are all common components that have undergone multiple revisions.

By simplifying and standardising our components, we can purchase in larger quantities, reduce stock and maintain high quality, making our solutions accessible even in cost-sensitive markets.

We machine about 150 components in-house now, up from not making anything internally two years ago.

We brought in the metrology lab and CNC machines not to save money but to control what we make.

The variations of standard products means that we already deeply understand how the core product works.

How does the metrology lab help adapt products for diverse EMEA market requirements?

Different markets have different requirements, like pressure directives for cylinders or specific valve functions.

However, we still use common components.

The valve may undergo changes for different markets, but 90% of it remains the same as the one we originally engineered.

When adapting to a market, we don’t start from scratch; we look for the shortest path without creating an entirely new product range.

The metrology lab allows us to ensure that any adaptations meet necessary standards and regulations.

We can measure and test components to ensure they comply with regional requirements while maintaining our high-quality standards.

Most necessary adaptations have been made, so our product can be sold anywhere and meet all requirements.

How do the lab’s capabilities align with Reacton’s goals for accessible, reliable solutions?

The metrology lab’s capabilities are central to our focus on precision and accessibility.

By measuring and controlling every aspect of our products precisely, we ensure they are reliable and perform as intended.

This precision allows us to innovate confidently, knowing we can test and validate new designs effectively.

The lab also supports our goal of accessibility by enabling us to standardise components and produce them efficiently.

Our detection side has seen a major overhaul with new electronic components that complement the system.

We’ve refined our manufacturing processes internally, equipping our team with more tools to produce products to an even higher standard in less time.

There have been many improvements in lean manufacturing.

We’ve made significant upgrades to our system to meet traceability and quality requirements for industries like transport and military, securing future contracts in those areas.

We’ve introduced a simulation suite to simulate vibration, flow, stress, temperature and wear before producing parts, which is particularly useful for special projects with unknown variables.

Any final thoughts?

In safety engineering, you can come up with wonderful ideas to keep people safe, but if they’re impractical or expensive, they won’t be adopted.

The adoption of safety equipment depends on its feasibility. If protecting every bus costs too much, it won’t happen.

But if it’s affordable, it will. That’s where value engineering comes in.

You can create unbelievable products with broad applications by building a standard set of components honed over years.

If you’re going to do something, you do it to the best possible standard, with the best value engineering and repeatability in quality.

My career has been about identifying how we can do things better and finding ways to improve.

That comes from designing well, manufacturing to the highest standard and providing exceptional customer support.

Engineering is disruptive because you learn through failure and embracing failure is essential.

The passion for quality is crucial. It leads to finding and working with the right customers.

If your distributors and customers don’t share the same passion for quality, then you’re not in the right place.

Driving the passion for quality brings the right customers.

We use our own products in the UK; all our CNC machines use the systems we sell worldwide.

We’ve had incidents on our machines where the system has done what it’s supposed to do.

The passion for quality is the headline. For me, quality drives the right behaviours in business almost all of the time.

According to Britannia Fire, the rollout of its service-free P50 composite fire extinguishers across Landsec’s £12 billion real estate portfolio is set to deliver substantial cost and environmental benefits.

The P50 extinguishers will replace traditional models across Landsec’s properties, halving the number of fire extinguishers required and removing the need for annual servicing.

This move supports Landsec’s sustainability objectives, as the P50 is completely PFAS-free, has a lower carbon footprint, and aligns with the upcoming UK ban on PFAS substances.

Successful trials highlight benefits at key sites

Trials conducted by Britannia Fire’s largest UK distributor, Safelincs, showcased the potential savings.

At sites such as Trinity Leeds, switching to P50 extinguishers cut costs by half over a 10-year period and reduced the carbon footprint by two-thirds.

Following these results, a full rollout was initiated by Safelincs and is now 10% complete.

Landsec is also using Britannia Fire’s scrappage scheme to dispose of old fire extinguishers in an environmentally responsible way.

He added: “The rollout process has been very smooth and efficient so far. Safelincs’ engineers are quick, efficient and tidy – often we don’t even know they are there! We also haven’t had to deal with   disposing of the old extinguishers.”

From innovation to installation with Piping Logistics

Jeroen De Smedt, CEO of Piping Logistics, discusses the company’s R&D initiatives, expansion into HVAC, and its sustainable production facility in Romania

In a relatively short time, the specialised manufacturer Piping Logistics has established itself as an innovative, client-focused leader in the fire protection sector.

With a new production facility in Romania, the development of new components, and expansion into the HVAC market, the Belgian company clearly proves its commitment to fire safety.

Profit, an aggregation of ‘Professional’ and ‘Fittings’, is the brand name of the Piping Logistics group, specialising in producing and supplying high-quality components for fire protection systems and HVAC installations.

For almost 20 years, the family business has operated from Aalst, where its central location ensures efficient delivery to customers throughout Europe.

Impressive but organic growth trajectory

Contractors and installers recognise in Piping Logistics a reliable partner for a wide range of products, such as pipes, fittings, couplings and accessories, essential for the installation of sprinkler and HVAC systems.

The components are designed for maximum safety and efficiency.

‘We invest extensively in modern production technologies and strict quality controls,’ says CEO Jeroen De Smedt.

The company’s growth has been impressive and, above all, organic.

“In the beginning, the company primarily distributed components sourced from China, an opportunity that founder André Saelens realised while running AquaSecurity, a fire protection installation company.

“Over the years, Piping Logistics expanded by establishing an in-house R&D department, a dedicated marketing team, and a production facility for our own components.”, says De Smedt.

AquaSecurity is still active, allowing it to act as a test lab for Piping Logistics’ innovations.

The CEO adds: “Without a doubt, a strong USP for our product development.

Yet another unique selling point is that Piping Logistics is committed to being on site within 24 hours in case of any issues, anywhere in the world.”

But the engineers are doing more and are also bending over the components coming from China, ensuring they meet the strict European standards.

“It’s about improving the usability, conforming to customer expectations, but also aligning the products to legal requirements. It is an important part of our strive for quality,’ De Smedt says.

Prefab systems as a new addition

Thanks to an ultra-wide range, Piping Logistics can position itself as a one-stop shop.

“We started as a supplier of couplings and fittings but have since developed a full product range. We can offer installers practically the complete package for a sprinkler installation.

“Only the sprinkler head is not yet in our range. We are actively working on it,” says the CEO.

Expansion into HVAC

It’s only a small step from sprinkler systems to accessories for HVAC.

Because the same couplings and fittings fit both water pipe systems.

“The main difference is water temperature and working pressure, but we have undertaken all the necessary tests and approvals to take our products to the huge potential of the HVAC market,” says Jeroen De Smedt.

Furthermore, Piping Logistics counts on its large stock for providing optimal customer service.

De Smedt said: “In Belgium, we have a 6.000 m² warehouse. Such a large stock is necessary for impeccable service.

“If a customer orders before noon, delivery takes place the next day. We can move faster than the competition.”

But even an SME has to grow if it wants to stay healthy.

That is why Piping Logistics has just opened a brand new factory in Romania.

“Within the context of the European Green Deal and the impending CO2 tax, it’s important to produce closer to home. Customers are also starting to wake up to this,” the CEO outlines.

In Romania, Piping Logistics produces prefab sprinkler pipes.

“That new product aims to save time, with outlets for the sprinkler heads pre-welded in the right place. On site, the installer just has to screw in the sprinkler head,” De Smedt concludes.

How does your R&D centre in Belgium and drive innovation in your product offerings?

The R&D center in Belgium serves as an innovation hub where new technologies and processes are developed to continually enhance our product line.

We do a lot of quality testing, trainings, product reviews etc in house.

One of our priorities is also to make existing products better and suitable for the future.

How does your relationship with AquaSecurity influence the development cycle of your components?

AquaSecurity is a crucial partner in our development process.

It is one of the biggest sprinkler installations companies in the Benelux.

The use of our (new) products in their installations enable us to identify and address potential weaknesses early in the development cycle.

This partnership ensures that our products meet the most stringent standards, allowing us to provide quality assurance to customers and accelerate our innovation process.

How has the introduction of prefabricated sprinkler pipes been received by installers?

Prefabricated sprinkler pipes have been positively received, primarily due to the time savings during installation.

Installers appreciate the reduced on-site work, which minimizes the likelihood of errors.

Feedback from the field has helped us to make adjustments, such as improved connection options and logistical support for quick deliveries to construction sites.

What prompted your expansion into the HVAC market?

Our expansion into the HVAC market was driven by the growing demand for integrated heating and cooling system solutions.

By combining our existing expertise in piping systems with HVAC-specific innovations, we’ve developed products tailored to the unique requirements of this sector.

How does the Romanian production facility factor in to your sustainability strategy?

The production facility in Romania is a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy.

By producing locally, we reduce transportation emissions and meet the high environmental standards set by the European Green Deal.

The facility leverages green energy and advanced techniques to minimise waste.

As you expand, how will you maintain your commitment to rapid customer service?

To maintain our service levels while expanding into new markets, we’ve invested in local distribution centers and an extensive network of technicians.
