THINKLIGHT 2025 to focus on culture and creativity in lighting design

THINKLIGHT will return to Light + Intelligent Building Middle East from 14-16 January 2025, bringing together over 30 industry experts to discuss the latest trends in lighting design.

As reported by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the event will feature keynotes, panel discussions, and open dialogues from top professionals in the field.

Now in its 18th edition, Light + Intelligent Building Middle East is co-located with Intersec to create the MENA region’s largest trade fair for the building services sector.

As reported by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Zahi Daher has been appointed as the new Manager of International Business Development for Saudi Arabia.

Daher will work closely with Eng. Dana Kamal, Director of International Business Development for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

His primary role will be to advance the implementation of fire and life safety standards in Saudi Arabia, which is undergoing significant transformation as part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative.

Daher brings extensive experience from his previous role at UL Standards & Engagement.

Intersec Saudi Arabia, the sixth edition of the Kingdom’s largest trade fair for safety, security, and fire protection saw a record attendance of over 23,000 industry professionals.

The event, held from 30 September to 3 October 2024 at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center (RICEC), marked a 38% increase in visitors from last year.

A total of 310 exhibitors were present, showcasing the full range of security, safety, and fire protection technologies.

The event featured five themed halls and utilised additional outdoor space to accommodate the increased demand, with exhibition space expanding by 34%.

High-level government participation and keynote addresses

The event was officially opened by H.E. Aali M. Al Zahrani, Governor of the Higher Commission for Industrial Security, and Major General Dr.

Hamoud bin Suleiman Al-Faraj, General Directorate of Saudi Civil Defense.

Major General Al-Faraj also delivered a keynote speech at the Fire Protection and Technology Summit, where he highlighted the directorate’s efforts to employ advanced technologies and preventive safety measures to ensure public security.

Saudi Arabia has seen significant development of fire safety technology during the last two years.

New trends are emerging, in particular, UL fire safety systems are gaining popularity.

Fire systems are needed to protect both large sites such as shopping centres, schools, universities and hospitals, as well as high-rise residential projects.

Advanced’s networked systems are the perfect fit for these challenges as they are fully scalable to suit virtually any application including ‘campus’ style and high-rise style configurations.

Advanced’s UL 864-10th Edition-approved Axis AX is a versatile fire alarm system combining addressable panels with audio systems, command centres and a comprehensive range of wired devices including CO detectors offering superior performance, quality and ease of use.

Evacuating safely

A message can be prioritised, vital if an evacuation strategy changes during an emergency.

If the fire brigade is present, Axis AX provides telephone communication channels which are integrated into the system with a telephone handset ensuring maximum safety.

The fire and emergency telephone system identifies the location of the field telephone users during emergencies and users can plug a telephone into an Axis AX fire panel to communicate the situation on a given floor speeding up evacuation.

But problems can occur with voice evacuation if the audio doesn’t sync and people hear multiple messages.

To solve this the Axis AX range features PerfectSync which ensures audio synchronisation even over large networks where it is possible to deliver a message from the first panel to the 200th with fast messaging to aid fast evacuation.

This clarity is ideal for tall residential buildings or large shopping centres or universities.

EN and UL

Saudi Arabia and the Middle East is a unique market where both UL and EN fire-safety solutions are used.

With wireless technology tried and tested in Europe, the Middle East is prioritising wireless solutions, especially following the development of robust, reliable Mesh technology.

Wireless fire alarm systems are also an attractive solution for retrofitting, since buildings do not have to run cables.

However, some wireless systems also integrate with existing fire alarm systems when an upgrade is required, creating a hybrid system, such as the Advanced Axis EN.

Avoiding complacency

False fire alarms are another issue in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
