Shurgard collaborates with Promat for enhanced passive fire protection in London

European self-storage operator, Shurgard, has partnered with passive fire protection specialists Promat to secure its new facilities in Chiswick and Chadwell Heath, London.

This collaboration aims to provide the highest standards of fire safety and durability in Shurgard’s construction projects.

Shurgard prioritises the safety of its customers’ property, making the implementation of passive fire protection systems a key aspect of their new constructions.

Both projects faced tight build schedules, requiring the passive fire protection work to be efficient and compliant with the highest standards.

The role of partners in the project

The main contractor Appian, along with Three Sixty Architecture, played a significant role in supporting Shurgard.

They focused on maximising lettable space while ensuring effective passive fire protection strategies, all backed by rigorous fire testing and certification.

Significant adjustments were made to the mezzanine floor system design at both sites, adapting to updated EN testing standards for steelwork.

This included revising the passive fire protection (PFP) specifications to accommodate electrical charging points in the car parks without compromising lettable space.

Innovative solutions and benefits

Promat’s involvement from the early stages of design provided specialised PFP detailing with their Promatect 250 system.

This approach ensured compliance and facilitated easy installation, maximising lettable space.

The introduction of electric vehicle charging points necessitated a fire protection solution that aligned with the project’s lean construction methodology.

Promat’s Supalux product was chosen for its lightweight and space-efficient properties, allowing installation before making the building weathertight and supporting the project’s swift progress.

Douglas Allan, Project Architect at Threesixty, commented on the collaboration: “The objectives for Shurgard projects are very clear, and being able to rely on the knowledge the Promat team offers is a big help in making sure the PFP scope is not only safe and compliant but that it also helps us to keep the schedule to a minimum and maximise the amount of lettable space Shurgard can benefit from.”

Comprehensive technical support

Promat provided a detailed specification pack for the installation of 15,000m2 of Promatect 250 and 850m2 of Supalux across the two sites.

This package included all necessary technical information and performance testing data to ensure efficient installation.

This partnership marks a significant step in addressing the unique challenges posed by the e-mobility sector, particularly in managing the hazards of lithium-ion batteries in mid to high-end cars.

Addressing the risks of lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, favoured for their high energy density and reduced charging times, pose a risk of self-ignition through thermal runaway following accidents.

This has necessitated a dual approach to safety: optimising battery chemistry and construction, and incorporating preventative measures from the design stage to safeguard users.

Recognising the need for technical quarantine areas (TQAs) to monitor potentially compromised EVs, Porsche Italia has been instrumental in developing spaces that can be safely situated close to existing structures.

These areas allow for the containment and monitoring of vehicles for durations ranging from five to fifteen days, depending on the assessed risk level.

The collaboration has led to the establishment of a fully automatic emergency management system, ensuring round-the-clock safety and environmental protection.

The Q-Container system, developed by EmiControls and extensively installed across the Official Porsche Italia Network, incorporates advanced sensors and fire-fighting technologies.

These include water mist technology for smoke abatement and an automatic flooding system to cool the battery pack swiftly, mitigating thermal event impacts.

“Through sprinklers with ‘water mist’ technology for smoke abatement and an automatic flooding system, electronically managed, allows the rapid cooling of the battery pack to mitigate the effects of the thermal escape and, eventually, stop it,” explained a representative from Porsche Italia.

  • An improved charge cradle design that locks the light securely in place, while also featuring a quick release latch to permit one-handed “grab and go” removal, even with gloved hands.
  • In addition to energising the new Survivor® X ATEX, the new charger also charges all existing Survivor models.

The Survivor® X ATEX features the latest in power technology for extreme brightness, and offers microprocessor-controlled high and low intensity and emergency flash modes.

The Rechargeable System model operates on a 2.6Ahr Lithium-Ion battery pack, which can be recharged up to 1,000 times, while the Survivor® X ATEX Alkaline uses three AA alkaline batteries.

On high, all models deliver 250 lumens and 50,000 candela over a beam distance of 447 metres.

The torch’s custom optic produces a narrow beam, ideal for cutting through smoke, fog and mist, while also providing optimum peripheral illumination to aid in navigation.

Operating run times for all three models range from 3.75 hours on high to 15 hours on low, with 8 hours on the flash setting.

Rechargeable System models are available with AC and DC chargers.

An indicator in the charger turns red when charging and green when the light is fully charged.

A bank charger accessory that charges five units simultaneously is also available.

An eight-unit SL-B26® Li-Ion USB battery bank charger that charges eight USB battery packs simultaneously is available as an accessory for the Survivor® X USB model

The Survivor® X ATEX features a low-profile, compact bezel designed to eliminate snagging when putting on equipment or other gear.

The torch’s reinforced, built-in attachment D-ring and updated spring-loaded clip offer superior retention, ensuring the torch consistently hangs forward, and conveniently latches to belts and harnesses.

Its rubber dome push-button translucent switch is easy to use, even with gloves, and its super-tough nylon housing provides exceptional durability.

All openings are O-ring sealed to resist moisture, including the torch’s unbreakable polycarbonate lens with silicone anti-scratch coating, assembled in a heavy-duty bezel.

The torch has an IP67-rated design for dust-tight use and waterproof operation to 1 metre for 30 minutes; it also is impact resistance-tested to 2 metres.

In addition to the Division 2 Survivor® X USB, Streamlight also offers a Survivor X model that is Class 1, Division 1 rated.

Survitec responds to the demand for advanced fire safety

In a significant development for maritime safety, Survitec, a leading provider of Survival Technology solutions, has announced enhancements to its Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) fire extinguishing system.

The upgrades, designed to offer improved protection for vessels operating on LNG and LPG fuels, have received type approval certification, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.

The reconfigured DCP system is already being specified for both newbuild and existing vessels, demonstrating immediate industry recognition.

Survitec’s first order for the upgraded system will be installed on a 16,000 TEU container ship currently under construction at a newbuild yard in South Korea.

Technological advancements in fire safety

Survitec’s newly enhanced DCP system includes several key components such as an extinguishant storage container, nitrogen gas cylinder, safety valves, a pressure regulator, piping, and discharge devices, including nozzles.

A notable advancement is the ability to combine longer lengths of discharge piping with smaller volumes of powder, optimising fire protection for bunkering stations and fuel-switching operations across a broader range of vessels.

The system’s design allows for increased pipe runs, up to 69m, with the potential for further extension on a case-by-case basis.

This flexibility is a significant improvement over traditional systems, enabling more efficient and adaptable fire safety solutions.

Piotr Bulas, Product Manager for DCP solutions at Survitec, elaborated on the system’s unique features: “Our solution is designed to support potassium bicarbonate or sulphate salts as the dry power medium, offering multiple advantages, including smaller, lighter, and more easily accommodated hardware, as well as lower overall cost of consumables.”

A cost-effective and efficient solution for maritime safety

Survitec’s nitrogen-propelled DCP solution is designed to meet the stringent requirements of both newbuilds and existing ships undergoing dual fuel propulsion solution retrofits.

The system ensures constant deployment at a minimum of 3.5kg/second for 45 seconds using just 175kg of powder, a significant reduction in consumables compared to competing solutions.

Kolodziejski further highlighted the system’s efficiency and cost benefits: “With the DCP system from Survitec, shipowners can often safeguard bunkering stations on both sides of the ship with just one DCP unit without compromising performance. This reduces installation and maintenance costs.”

Survitec’s commitment to innovation extends to maintenance, with the new DCP system designed for easy servicing and testing without disassembling core components.

The system is delivered as a single, compact unit for ‘plug and play’ installation, simplifying the shipbuilding process and ensuring long-term reliability and safety.

Wellington College enhances fire safety with Cygnus wireless technology

Introduction to the project

Wellington College recently undertook a significant upgrade to its fire alarm system in response to a fire risk assessment that identified multiple non-compliances.

The assessment highlighted the urgency of addressing these issues, particularly because the college includes sleeping quarters, which posed a heightened risk.

Selecting the right solution

In search of a solution that could be implemented swiftly without disrupting its operations, Wellington College turned to Clevedon-based Raw Fire & Security.

The firm recommended the Cygnus SmartNet-100 fire detection and alarm system, noting its 100% wireless capability and EN 54 certification.

This recommendation was based on the system’s ability to offer quick installation and minimal disruption, eliminating the need for extensive groundwork and thereby maintaining the college’s aesthetic standards.

The installation process presented a considerable challenge: it had to be completed quickly to avoid downtime and potential revenue loss from cancelling bookings at the college’s Inns of Court shooting lodge.
