Rosenbauer receive major order for PANTHER vehicles from Spanish airports

Rosenbauer have received a major order from Spain just before the end of the year. Airport operator AENA ordered 22 PANTHER 6×6 vehicles, including a multi-year maintenance contract. The vehicles are destined for twelve of the largest airports in Spain and will be delivered by the end of 2022. The Spanish airport operator ordered an additional seven rescue vehicles from Rosenbauer in another project.

High-end technology for AENA
The PANTHER is one of the most powerful and safest ARFF vehicles in the world. Its impressive features include optimal system integration of chassis, superstructure and fire extinguishing systems and a multiple-award-winning design.

The 22 vehicles for AENA are built on Rosenbauer 6×6 chassis, are powered by a Volvo engine with 700 hp (552 kW) and can achieve a top speed of 120 km/h with a working weight of 37 t. The crash-tested safety cabin can accommodate six emergency services personnel, and the extinguishing agent tanks can carry 10,000 liters of water and 1,200 liters of foam concentrate.

The vehicles’ fire extinguishing systems consist of the N80 high-performance pump with a rated output of 8,000 l/min at 10 bar (up to 9,000 l/min at 14 bar), the FIXMIX 2.0 automatic around-the-pump foam proportioning system and a powder extinguishing system with 250 kg of extinguishing powder.

The extinguishing agents can be applied while the vehicle is in motion (pump-and-roll operation) via both the RM80 roof turret and the RM15 front turret. The RM80 has a capacity of up to 9,500 l/min (water) and is equipped with a combined water/powder nozzle through which up to 15 kg/s of extinguishing powder can be conveyed by water jet.

Longstanding partnership
The partnership between the Spanish airport operator and Rosenbauer goes back decades. The first ARFF vehicles were delivered in the 1980s, with the first PANTHER supplied to AENA in 2006.

In the years that followed, a further 41 vehicles (21 PANTHER 6x6s, 20 PANTHER 8x8s) were delivered and in 2018 and 2019, ARFF vehicles from the BUFFALO series (11 BUFFALO 6x6s, 4 BUFFALO 4x4s) were also supplied.

AENA’s fleet also features Rosenbauer fire extinguishing tankers for building fire protection, and the second new order adds new rescue vehicles for technical operations. The latter, like the BUFFALO vehicles, originate from the Ciansa plant in Linares, Spain, while the PANTHER vehicles are manufactured at the Group’s Austrian headquarters in Leonding.

AENA is supported by Rosenbauer Española, who is also responsible for maintaining the 22 PANTHER vehicles for their first three years in service (with an extension option for up to ten years) to ensure their continued operational capability.

The Rosenbauer subsidiary is headquartered in Madrid and employs 85 people, around 50 of whom work in service and production. It is the center of competence for forest firefighting and recovery vehicles in the Rosenbauer Group, and produces municipal fire extinguishing and rescue vehicles as well as industrial and ARFF vehicles at its Ciansa plant.

In addition to AENA, Rosenbauer Española’s key customers also include numerous municipal professional fire departments (such as Cuerpo de Bomberos Madrid), the Spanish forest fire authorities and the Spanish Armed Forces with its emergency response unit Unidad Militar de Emergencias, which plays an important role in fighting forest fires.

World’s largest airport operator
AENA operates 46 airports throughout Spain, including the major airports of Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche, Gran Canaria and Tenerife Sur.

Motorola Solutions extend agreement to provide emergency data communications

Motorola Solutions has extended its agreement to provide the Victorian Government with a dedicated emergency data communications managed service for use by Ambulance Victoria.

Known as the Mobile Data Network (MDN), the network was the first emergency data communications network to be procured under a build, own and operate public-private services model in Australia. 

It was first deployed in 2005 and provides secure, mission-critical emergency data communications for Ambulance Victoria, primarily to support ambulance dispatch capabilities across the greater Melbourne metropolitan area.

Under the extended agreement, Motorola Solutions will keep Ambulance Victoria at the forefront of innovation by integrating a number of its technologies within a single platform. This will ensure the state’s paramedics receive the right information at the right time so they can deliver better care and outcomes for all patients.

The extended contract with the State of Victoria is valued at approximately AUD$100 million, and ensures continuity of MDN services until 2025 with options to extend for a further two years.

Survitec LIFERAFTS in near perfect condition after 30 months

Survitec has carried out a combination of more than 50,000 liferaft exchanges and inspections since 2012 with technicians recording that the liferafts inspected are in perfect condition even after 30 months of service.

Revised guidelines (MSC.1/Circ.1328) introduced in June 2009 permit extended service schedules of up to 30 months if they incorporate protective arrangements that give the liferaft, its fittings and equipment adequate protection to withstand the environmental influences imposed by the extended interval.

Inspections and service records in Survitec’s database show that liferafts were found to be well within the requisite parameters set out in MSC guidelines for extended service liferafts.

Survitec was one of the first maritime safety companies to offer the extended service solution concept.

Malcolm Barratt, Technical Sales Manager – Liferafts, Survitec, said: “That liferafts are in near perfect condition after 30 months is specifically due to the water- and air-tight environment in which the extended service liferaft is contained. The hermetically sealed bag inside the container prevents water ingress and salt erosion.”

A large number of Flag Authorities now accept use of extended service liferafts for ‘serviceable life,’ “When we have presented liferafts after 30 months of service to Flag State inspectors, they have thought we were showing them a newly manufactured liferaft; they’re in perfect condition!” said Barratt.

Tommy Scott, Head of Engineering – Survitec Liferafts, added: “State-of-the-art sensors within the liferaft allow operators to take as many readings as they need to with a unique handheld device to ensure the liferaft is in good working order.”

The handheld device takes readings from a low powered CO2 sensor – making it suitable for use aboard oil and gas carriers and platforms governed by ATEX (Atmospheres Explosible) requirements.

Once all parameters have been recorded using the ATEX-compliant handheld reader, data is recorded on the provided inspection log form and uploaded to the database.

Unlike alternative solutions, which recommend limiting the number of readings to preserve battery life, Survitec’s handheld reader takes a standard 9V alkaline battery that can be easily replaced, allowing crews to take accurate readings more frequently.

“If any readings reveal the liferaft is outside the requisite parameters – by displaying a red light for either incompliant CO2 or humidity levels – remedial action is required. For a CO2 anomaly, this means immediate replacement. For increased humidity, replacement would be required within three months.”

Barratt said the tanker segment, in particular, has been quick to take up the extended service liferaft solution with charterers and oil majors often mandating the concept as part of the Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) programme. TMSA is an administrative process that provides tanker operators with a means to improve and measure their own safety management systems.

“Another reason for the wide take up is the cost-savings associated with crews trained to take the readings. At no extra cost to the company, we certify crews to inspect the liferafts themselves, negating the need for external technicians onboard,” he said.

Luminite Electronics rebrand the Nexus as ALERTEX

The range of wireless critical alerts manufactured by Luminite Electronics under the Nexus name has now been rebranded as ALERTEX.

The name change is part of Luminite’s strategy to simplify its brand names particularly for export markets.  It was felt that the name ALERTEX better encompasses what the range does – a wireless critical alert system designed to provide a clear warning to an event requiring action.

ALERTEX comprises a range of wireless internal and external call points with sounders and beacons which can be rapidly deployed to provide a robust alarm system. 

Units are battery powered and have a long and robust transmission range of 1km between units.  The systems are portable and quick and easy to install with no civil works or cabling required.  Internal and external units are available in a choice of colours.

ALERTEX units can be used in schools and places of worship as a lockdown system or on construction sites as a fire alert system.

FLIR airborne solution helps find missing man in Canada

When a 38-year-old man went missing in Waterloo, Canada, on November 19, local law enforcement turned to an airborne solution by FLIR—a remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) with a thermal imaging camera—to search the area and found the man safe later the same day.

The agency uses its SkyRanger, a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS), to conduct a variety of law enforcement and public safety activities, including evidence collection at crime scenes, reconstruction of serious collisions, search and rescue operations, and monitoring of large gatherings.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service reported it used its RPV for eight investigations during October, including four suspect searches and four serious collisions. The drone’s activity and flight updates can be viewed on the agency’s RPV Twitter page.
