The Minnesota Star Tribune has reported that jury trials for firefighter cancer claims linked to PFAS-containing firefighting foam are scheduled to begin in October 2025.

According to the newspaper, thousands of claimants allege that 3M’s foams caused cancer, with the first “bellwether” case focusing on kidney cancer due to be heard on 20 October.

Attorney Ronald Miller, who represents plaintiffs, wrote that he expects settlements to be reached before the trial.

3M, based in Maplewood, Minnesota, has already faced PFAS-related costs including a $12.5 billion settlement in 2023 over water contamination claims.

The manufacturer stated that it will address PFAS litigation through either court defence or negotiated resolutions, depending on the circumstances.

Ongoing financial impact on 3M

The Star Tribune reported that analysts estimate 3M may still face between $5 billion and $15 billion in additional PFAS-related payouts.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Deane Dray said that litigation costs will affect cash flow and may limit funds available for new product development.

UBS analyst Amit Mehrotra told 3M’s CEO Bill Brown during an investor call that pending liabilities remain a drag on the company’s valuation.

A Baptista Research report stated that 3M’s balance sheet remains strong enough to cover litigation expenses while continuing to pursue growth.

The company ended PFAS manufacturing this year but continues to manage legal challenges.

History of PFAS use and regulation

The Star Tribune explained that 3M has produced PFAS since the 1950s for products including Scotchgard and firefighting foam.

Internal documents show the company recognised by the 1970s and 1980s that the chemicals do not break down easily and accumulate in the environment and human bodies.

Health studies have linked certain types of PFAS to cancer and other risks.

3M paid $850 million in 2018 to settle a PFAS contamination case with the State of Minnesota.

The first bellwether trial is scheduled to begin on 20 October 2025.

Federal Judge Richard M. Gergel has urged settlement talks and appointed a mediator.

He said in court last year that defending the cases nationwide could impose high costs on 3M.

The Star Tribune reported that 3M has faced similar processes before, including a series of bellwether trials that led to a $6 billion earplug settlement.

Global and state-level lawsuits

The Star Tribune said that 3M faces legal claims not only in the United States but also in Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The company recently agreed to pay up to $450 million to settle claims from New Jersey’s attorney general.

Galls has reported the acquisition of Phoenix Safety Outfitters, a supplier of fire PPE and related services based in Springfield, Ohio.

The company said the move is intended to strengthen its product range and service capacity for the US fire services sector.

According to Galls, the agreement will see Phoenix Safety Outfitters operate as an independent division within the wider business.

Galls stated that the integration will allow it to bring its eQuip customer portal and service model to the fire PPE market.

The firm added that the acquisition aligns with its goal of enhancing operational scale, product availability, and specialist support.

Jo Garner has recently completed her first full year leading Bristol Uniforms, a key manufacturer of fire protective clothing and part of the MSA Safety family of companies.

Her arrival marked a period of renewal and growth for the business, which continues to supply fire brigades across the UK and beyond.

With ESS 2025 approaching and several customer and community initiatives in motion, Jo reflects on her experience so far and shares what comes next for Bristol, how feedback from fire services is used in development and why local engagement remains part of the business culture.

Can you start by sharing a bit about your career path and what led you to take on the leadership role at Bristol?

My career with MSA began in January 2020, serving as the Plant Manager in Devizes, UK, before becoming plant manager at MSA’s Berlin facility, overseeing breathing apparatus manufacturing, including the M1 SCBA.

Last year, I returned to the UK and joined Bristol, leading three facilities operating in Yate, Rainham and Livingston.

Prior to my time at MSA, I spent 13 years working for a Tier 1 supplier in the automotive industry, manufacturing brakes and clutch systems, which included a three-year assignment in Germany and a six-year assignment in Brazil.

My previous leadership experiences and positive mindset showed I was well-positioned to take on the role of General Manager at Bristol and to support the team in continuing to develop strong relationships with our wide customer base and key partners.

What lessons have you taken from your first year leading Bristol and its three sites?

It’s been a positive year, especially with our customers and the activities happening with voice of customer (VoC) and how we apply feedback from our end users to our operations and garment design.

I’ve had lots of opportunities to take part in VoC sessions while learning about the business and about fire protective clothing.

It’s really interesting and fantastic to see end users and be able to learn more about how we’re working to help protect firefighters here in the UK and around the world.

Additionally, I’m always amazed and proud of the associates who make up the Bristol team.

They are so committed and have an outstanding work ethic.

You will see that everywhere with MSA, but I can truly say it’s especially the case at Bristol.

You can see it and feel it.

They truly care about the product we’re making, the impact they make and how important these garments are for firefighters.

What will Bristol be presenting at ESS 2025 and how are you approaching the event this year?

Yes, Bristol will be at ESS with the MSA Safety fire service family.

We are looking forward to connecting with our customers and showcasing how MSA Safety’s ecosystem of fire safety solutions are responding to the needs of the industry.

With so many products and solutions all under one roof, we have the know-how – from fire protective clothing to helmets to SCBA to connected devices – to help enhance firefighter safety.

We’ll also be highlighting some of our industry partnerships to further develop our fire service offerings.

How do you gather, evaluate and apply firefighter feedback throughout product development at Bristol?

Everything we do starts and ends with our customers and we routinely conduct VoC sessions to get the latest feedback on new clothing designs.

VoC is important throughout MSA, but really seeing how extensive and expansive the process is with Bristol shows how invaluable our customers and the fire service’s input is to us.

Recently, we worked through a trio of VoC events, ranging from one to two days, over an eight-month timespan.

Bringing together a mix of male and female firefighters, we look at these events as a cross functional experience and how we can best gather feedback when it comes to equipping firefighters with PPE from head to toe.

We’re looking at each component a firefighter wears and also how they interact as an ensemble.

Plus, how the kit a firefighter is wearing is being put to the test during all types of drills.

We’re focusing on the design elements for our fire protective clothing and the fit and form of the clothing.

How has attending Women in the Fire Service events influenced your team or design approach?

During the most recent Women in the Fire Service UK event, sizing for fire garments was one of the big topics raised by female firefighters.

We had representation there, delivered a workshop and had our head designer present.

It’s events like that which are great opportunities to work with customers and understand directly from them what their pain points are.

When we better understand what they’re experiencing, we can work to design garments in a way so when they’re wearing their PPE, they’re not thinking about it when they’re needing it the most.

And when it comes to diversity in the fire service, there’s a lot of work that has already been done with fire protective clothing and gear to accommodate the diverse builds of firefighters, with a range of fits that Bristol offered and continues to offer.

But right now, there’s a need for more education and making it known that there are many options out there to accommodate the needs of firefighters.

What is the Sewing Academy and how does it fit into the way the business operates?

We have established an in-house sewing academy and it’s serving two purposes for us from an educational August 2025 perspective.

First, every associate who comes through the business to be a machinist, before heading to the production line, now they go through the academy.

This helps to reinforce the importance of their work, their skills and the understanding of every stitch they’re making for a piece of PPE.

Second, the academy has given us an opportunity to start a sewing apprentice program.

With so many long-time associates here, it is important to share about the career opportunities we have, but also provide opportunities and work to develop a talent pipeline moving forward.

It’s important to have younger generations coming through and experiencing the work we’re doing here.

Why did Bristol launch a charity committee and how are associates shaping its activities?

We were thinking, as a team, ‘How can we bring ourselves to the local community?’ and from there we formed a charity committee.

We wanted to extend the engagement our associates have with each other and take it into the community and not just at the Bristol base in Yate, but also at our locations in Rainham and Livingston.

We got great uptake and a great mix of committee members with an excellent set of minds.

Some of the best ideas coming from the committee are coming from the associates on the factory floor.

Our associates are very hands-on when it comes to giving back.

Their ownership of the activities and planning has been amazing, and they’re the ones really rallying everyone together when donations and volunteers are needed.

The engagement and support are tremendous and they are the heartbeat of the organisation.

At the Yate facility, we’re supporting a local charity, 1625 Independent People, who work with young adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Bristol and the surrounding area.

The organisation is aligned similarly with our company’s values around safety, making them a great fit to support.

In June, we volunteered time renovating and refreshing rooms at one of 1625’s facilities to make it more suitable for younger people.

And at the Livingston site in Scotland, their team is supporting a soup kitchen and giving back locally in their area.

We’re also engaging with our local secondary schools and taking part in their career fairs, tabletop events and doing what we’re able to highlight our career opportunities.

Beyond connecting with local schools, we’re working to further that connection with school aged children and introducing them not just to what is happening inside the plant, but other aspects of getting their career search off to an early start.

We’re looking at ways we can showcase safety in the workplace and practical skills like CV (resume) drafting and writing workshops.

Meaningful activities they can go away with after a visit with us.

What direction do you see MSA and Bristol taking over the next few years and what are your main areas of focus going forward?

My vision is centred on positioning Bristol as a leader in premium safety solutions while providing superior customer service.

Specifically for the fire service, this means showing to our customers the benefits of being a one-stop shop for their fire protective needs.

As both the manufacturer and service provider for fire protective clothing, we offer comprehensive solutions to cover a variety of their needs.

One of the key advantages of Bristol is that we don’t just design and manufacture fire protective clothing; we also work closely with our counterparts across MSA Safety to ensure our customers are fully equipped.

We always strive to meet our customers’ requirements with a focus on delivering an exceptional experience.

I intend for our teams to continue sharing the benefits of our fully managed service with our customer base not only in the UK but also globally.

By emphasising quality, reliability and customer care, we aim to strengthen our partnerships and support our customers in the important work they do.

First sodium-ion battery storage systems deployed on U.S. grid

Launch of sodium-ion battery storage systems in the United States

Peak Energy has reported the launch and shipment of its sodium-ion battery energy storage system to the U.S. electric grid.

This is the first grid-scale sodium-ion storage solution to be deployed in the United States, according to the developer.

The system features a patent-pending passive cooling design intended to reduce lifetime energy costs.

It also removes components identified by independent third-party reports as being involved in most battery storage system fires.

The launch forms part of a pilot programme with nine utility and independent power producer customers this summer.

Passive cooling and design features

Peak Energy stated that its sodium-ion phosphate pyrophosphate battery storage system eliminates all moving parts, including active cooling and ventilation components.

Removing these parts reduces the most common failure modes in battery storage systems.

The design is intended to increase reliability and reduce operating and maintenance costs.

Sodium-ion chemistry enables operation across a wide range of temperatures without auxiliary cooling systems.

This contrasts with lithium-ion technologies, which require active cooling and ventilation to preserve cell life and prevent fires.

Cost and performance claims

The grid storage system is cost-competitive with other industry products.

Its design provides lower operating and maintenance costs over its lifetime.

Passive cooling allows for reduced auxiliary power use and fewer components likely to fail.

Performance testing indicated operational cost savings of at least $1 million annually per gigawatt hour installed.

Testing also showed approximately 20% lifetime cost savings compared to lithium iron phosphate deployments and a 33% reduction in battery degradation over 20 years.

Policy and supply chain considerations

The launch comes as U.S. federal policies are increasing the focus on domestic energy supply chains.

Rising energy demand has made battery storage essential for grid resilience and cost reduction.

Sodium-ion technology offers supply chain advantages for the United States.

The country holds the largest reserves of soda ash, a mineral used to produce sodium-ion batteries.

The full raw material supply chain can be sourced domestically or from allied nations.

Future deployment plans

The pilot project is an initial step in commercialising sodium-ion battery storage in the U.S.

Nearly 1GWh of future commercial contracts are under negotiation.

Over the next two years, several hundred megawatt hours of commercial-scale storage will be deployed to multiple independent power producer and hyperscaler partners.

Development is also underway for the first U.S. cell factory, scheduled to begin production in 2026.

This follows $55 million in Series A funding in 2024 and the company’s launch from stealth in 2023.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

The removal of active cooling and ventilation systems in this design addresses components linked to many battery storage system fires, according to independent third-party reports.

For fire and safety professionals, this may change risk assessment protocols for grid-scale storage installations.

The adoption of sodium-ion chemistry in grid applications could influence emergency response planning, particularly in temperature extremes where lithium-ion systems require auxiliary systems.

Understanding the operational characteristics of passive-cooled systems will be important for developing training, maintenance, and inspection standards.

What if fire safety installation only took minutes? Ajax Systems says it now does

EN54 Line enables scalable installation across commercial and public buildings

Ajax Systems has announced the launch of its EN54 Line fire detection and alarm system in the UK.

According to the company, the new system is fully wireless and designed to support a range of sites including schools, hospitals, offices and heritage buildings.

The firm said the system includes 15 new devices and three accessories, built around the EN54 Fire Hub Jeweller, a wireless control and indicating equipment unit.

EN54 Line devices can be installed in under five minutes and then monitored and maintained remotely or on-site using Ajax’s free mobile and desktop apps.

Aleksandr Konotopskyi, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Ajax Systems said: “Ajax Systems always strives to push the boundaries and is here to transform the outdated and inconvenient industry into a beautiful, tech-savvy domain.

“EN54 Line is more than a new product line — it’s our statement and a real revolution in fire safety.

“Intuitive, scalable, and future-ready — these are the main pillars of our latest innovation.”

Wireless coverage and backup designed for large-scale infrastructure

Ajax Systems stated that the Fire Hub Jeweller offers coverage of up to 1,800 metres and can support up to 200 devices and 40 fire zones.

To extend range, the company has developed the EN54 ReX Jeweller, which can be used with up to five extenders to increase system coverage to 35 km².

The Fire Hub includes built-in radio communicators and supports both mains connection and backup lithium-ion batteries that offer 24 to 72 hours of autonomous operation, depending on model.

The company added that the system meets the EN 54 series of standards for fire detection and alarm systems and also integrates intrusion detection and video surveillance capabilities in line with EN 50131 (Grade 2).

Detectors and sounders use dual-sensor smoke chamber and fast-alert VADs

The system includes a series of addressable smoke and heat detectors developed from Ajax’s residential product line.

According to Ajax Systems, the detectors feature a dual-spectrum optical sensor and the HazeFlow 2 algorithm for accurate smoke identification, alongside thermistors for heat detection.

Sounders and visual alarm devices are available as standalone or combined units, with the firm stating that activation occurs in under three seconds.

Devices support audible alerts up to 100 dB and red LED perimeter flashes designed for high visibility in varying conditions.

Integrated automation and visual verification capabilities

Ajax Systems said its EN54 I/O Module (2X2) Jeweller allows third-party device integration through two inputs and two outputs.

It can be configured to activate evacuation systems, control lighting or unlock access points during emergencies, even if the hub is temporarily offline.

Installers can create up to 64 automation scenarios per control unit, and additional Ajax smart relays and switches can be linked to the system for further emergency response automation.

Mobile configuration, real-time updates and maintenance access

Ajax Systems explained that installation requires no enclosure disassembly, and most devices connect via a QR code and SmartBracket mounting panel.

System maintenance and configuration are handled via Ajax apps, with device battery life ranging from four to seven years depending on the product.

The company added that all devices perform self-checks and send real-time status updates to the Fire Hub and the app.

Software updates are delivered over-the-air, with maintenance reports and battery replacements possible without tools.

According to the manufacturer, the system is suitable for both permanent and temporary installations where cabling may be restricted.

The system is fully wireless and designed for commercial and municipal infrastructure.

Vallfirest photo contest invites wildfire professionals worldwide

Photo contest open to users in selected countries

Vallfirest has announced an international photo competition open from 1 August to 1 October 2025.

According to Vallfirest, the campaign invites users of its firefighting equipment to share field images via Instagram using a dedicated hashtag and tag.

Participants must include at least one Vallfirest product in use, either during active wildfire response, training, or patrol scenarios.

The company stated that five winning entries will be selected by public vote and awarded gear and visibility on Vallfirest platforms.

Participation is limited to individuals aged 18 or over in a defined list of eligible countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Entry rules require public Instagram posts

Vallfirest explained that entries must be submitted between 1 August and 1 October 2025 using the hashtag #VallfirestInAction2025.

Entrants must also tag @vallfirest and @vallfirest_na on a public Instagram post and include at least one Vallfirest product in use.

Only one submission per participant will be accepted.

The company said that photos not meeting the visibility or tagging requirements will be disqualified.

It also stated that photos must not contain political, offensive or explicit content.

Prizes include gear and global exposure

According to Vallfirest, the five photos with the highest number of public votes will receive gear packages and be featured across its platforms.

Winning entries will also appear in the Vallfirest calendar and newsletter for the following year.

The company added that all entries will be published on a web-based platform after the closing date for public voting.

It said the exact dates for the voting window will be announced via its website and social media channels.

Intellectual property rights and image use policy

Vallfirest confirmed that by entering, participants grant the company non-exclusive, royalty-free rights to use submitted images for at least two years.

It said the images may be used in digital or printed materials, merchandising, newsletters or marketing campaigns, with attribution when applicable.

Participants must hold the copyright to their images and are responsible for ensuring the photos do not infringe on third-party rights.

Vallfirest noted that it reserves the right to reject or remove entries it considers irrelevant or inappropriate.
