Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) has officially integrated the Rosenbauer RTX Electric Fire Engine into its fleet, marking a significant advancement in its commitment to firefighter health and safety.

Fire Chief Karen Fry emphasised: “Our foremost objective in acquiring this asset is to elevate the well-being and safety of our firefighters during their daily operations.”

Vancouver, renowned for its natural beauty and as the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, is Canada’s most densely populated city.

Deputy Fire Chief Tyler Moore highlighted the urban challenges, noting the high density and the frequency of fires in the city.

The RTX’s design, with its compact size, short overhang, tight turning radius, and all-wheel steering, is perfectly suited for navigating the city’s challenging landscape.

Health and safety at the forefront

Deputy Chief Moore also stressed the importance of health and safety in their decision to acquire the RTX.

The vehicle’s adjustable suspension, which can be lowered, makes operations easier and safer for firefighters.

Todd McBride, Rosenbauer’s RTX Sales and Marketing Manager, mentioned that cities like Vancouver were a primary consideration in the development of the RTX, designed to address urban challenges in rapidly growing cities.

Canada’s first electric fire engine

Glenn Jacques, President of Rosenbauer dealer Rocky Mountain Phoenix, celebrated the deployment of the RTX as a landmark event, marking it as the first electric fire engine in service in Canada.

This represents a notable chapter in the nation’s firefighting innovation.

Engine 1, stationed at Fire Hall 1 in downtown Vancouver, responded to its first call within 20 minutes of being placed into service.

Specialised techniques are employed to isolate high-voltage systems, crucial for preventing potential hazards post-collision.

Berlin Fire Department orders more electric vehicles from Rosenbauer

The Berlin fire department is set to further reduce its fleet CO2 emissions by investing in more electric firefighting vehicles with a new order to firefighting vehicle manufacturer Rosenabuer.

The order includes four “Revolutionary Technology” (RT) models specially configured for Berlin as electric firefighting and rescue vehicles (eLHFs), which the fire department co-developed and realized together with Rosenbauer as part of a multi-year innovation partnership.

Following successful trial operation lasting thirteen months and involving three fire stations, at which 90% of the almost 1,400 deployments were “electric-only,” the Berlin fire department made its decision: This is the vehicle they want to take them into the future.

Around ten metric tons of CO2 equivalents were saved during trial operation compared with a diesel-powered firefighting vehicle, and savings as high as 16 metric tons or more of CO2 equivalents per vehicle and year of operation are potentially realistic.

The Berlin RT vehicle design supports precise deployment needs by offering high-quality fire extinguishing equipment that meets the requirements of a city fire department and comprises the N25 firefighting pump, which complies with FPN 10-2000, the RFC Admix Variomatic foam proportioning system and CAFS fire extinguishing technology, which complies with DLS 800.

In addition, the vehicle comes with not only on-board equipment for firefighting purposes but also a range of equipment for the myriad small-scale technical deployments. In terms of extinguishing agents, the vehicle transports 1,200 l of water and 100 l of foam concentrate; the crew comprises seven firefighters. 

In addition to the four RTs, Rosenbauer is also developing an electric equipment vehicle for the Berlin fire department. The specification and purchase of this vehicle type show that operational hygiene – especially clean/dirty separation immediately following firefighting operations – is becoming increasingly important.

The equipment vehicle for operational hygiene brings cleaning equipment and changing facilities to the scene of a fire; features an attachment that is divided into two for contaminated/clean clothing and can be accessed without needing to stoop; and is constructed on an electric series production chassis from Volvo. 

By ordering five new electric vehicles, the Berlin fire department is demonstrating once again that it is among the trend-setters in the world of firefighting. As a public institution, it sees itself as a role model that actively supports the sustainability management policy of the German capital’s city government and is keen to make its own significant contribution to the process of meeting the climate protection goals.

These goals include making Berlin carbon-neutral by 2045 at the latest and ensuring that the state administration, to which the fire departments also belong, is largely carbon-neutral by 2030. Converting the public fleets to alternative drive systems and drive energies is one of the most important actions in this respect. The fire departments alone (professional and volunteer services) operate around 1,000 vehicles.

Magirus stops at FLORIAN 2022 on its European roadshow

Firefighting Vehicles manufacturer Magirus made a successful appearance at the FLORIAN trade fair in Dresden last month as part of its European roadshow

With record numbers of 20,000 visitors, this year’s FLORIAN trade fair saw a significant increase over last year. Magirus took the stage and presented many innovations and groundbreaking new products. In addition, FLORIAN was the last stop on its highly successful “Experience the Future” roadshow.

Since September, Magirus has been touring Europe with its innovative roadshow “Experience The Future” to present its state-of-the-art product portfolio to fire departments and interested visitors. In Dresden, the latest innovations for the next generation of firefighting could be experienced live on the outdoor area F5 at booth F50.

FLORIAN thus successfully concluded this year’s roadshow stops. The new Magirus Wolf CI tactical logistics platform was presented alongside the Magirus Wolf R1 response robot. Both are part of Magirus’ innovative “Next Generation Firefighting”

A highlight of the show for Magirus was that State Secretary Dr. Frank Pfeil, who had opened FLORIAN 2022 on behalf of Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster, officially took delivery of Central Europe’s first gas-powered fire engine.

The CNG-powered HLF 10 pumper from Magirus will be used in the city of Radeberg in the future for both fire-fighting and technical assistance. When refueled with biogas, the vehicle can be operated 100% CO²-neutral and, above all, cost-efficiently.

World’s first electric automatic aerial ladder put to the test

Schutz & Rettung Zürich  are testing the world’s first electric automatic aerial ladder from Rosenbauer.

Used for fighting fires, rescuing people and animals, providing assistance in severe weather, rope rescue, dealing with bees and other services, the new electric automatic aerial ladder (L32A-XS electric) will be put to the test when Schutz & Rettung Zürich (SRZ) uses it as an additional automatic aerial ladder as part of a pilot project.

The electric automatic aerial ladder, made by Rosenbauer, is powered by electricity from three lithium-ion batteries. The ladder should be no different from conventional models as far as operating it is concerned. It is also designed to be quieter. However, the top prority is making sure that SRZ can perform its fundamental mission of protecting and rescuing the people of Zurich at all times, without any restrictions.

The vehicle previously showcased at the Interschutz trade show in Hanover will remain available for training and familiarizing firefighters until it is incorporated into deployment scheduling (sometime around the end of November).

The vehicle will then be deployed on real-life operations both in the urban area of Zurich and in the airport region as part of a year-long pilot project, delivering valuable information on how it performs when used on day-to-day calls by a fire department. This could provide significant insights that can subsequently be used to optimize the procurement of emergency vehicles with alternative drive systems.

Gebäudeversicherung Zürich (GVZ), a buildings insurance organization, is supporting the pilot project in its capacity as the organization with overall responsibility for fire services in the canton of Zurich and a key partner to SRZ.

Markus Zellinger from Rosenbauer Schweiz AG, commented: “We are delighted to be implementing the first all-electric aerial ladder in collaboration with our customer, Schutz & Rettung Zürich (SRZ), and to have handed it over for trials. The top priority during development of the aerial ladder was functionality.

“We wanted it to be just as functional, powerful and reliable as the established standard aerial ladders while also being equally easy to use and maintain and offering the same level of spare parts availability. That is why we used only high-quality OEM components.”

Ziegler to deliver Z-Class with HYBRIDdrive to Cranfield Airport

The ZIEGLER Group has received the world’s first customer order from Cranfield Airport, owned by Cranfield University, for the delivery of an ARFF with HYBRIDdrive Technology. 

ZIEGLER said it received the order three months after the announcement of the  market launch of the Z6 HYBRIDdrive  in June 2022. 

The Z6 HYBRIDdrive from ZIEGLER is built on a Titan T39-770 6×6 chassis, which can be operated in three modes: purely electric, hybrid with electric and combustion engines, and purely conventional with a Stage V engine. 

The hybrid design means that emissions can be significantly reduced, whilst in an application situation where a quick reaction is needed the maximum power of up to 1,150 hp, with an acceleration of 0-80 km/h within 25 s, can be called up.

Angus Yan, CSO of the ZIEGLER Group said: “It is the perfect concept for the future of fire protection at airports and combines the best of both worlds: the vehicle contributes to achieving the goals of ‘Green Airports’ and also offers maximum performance in operational situations.”

The award of the contract contributes to the ARFF sector in general thanks to the implementation of the latest, state-of-the-art technology from ZIEGLER and strengthens the decarbonization activities of Cranfield Airport.

Rob Abbott, Director of Cranfield Airport, commented: “Cranfield Airport is known for pioneering projects like this. For example, we have installed a ‘Digital Air Traffic Control Centre’, are working on the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles and are paving the way for the future of electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. The procurement of the new Z-Class with hybrid propulsion is another milestone on our agenda for the zero-emission aviation we are striving for.”

The new Z-Class with HYBRIDdrive Technology at Cranfield Airport is produced at the ZIEGLER headquarters in Giengen an der Brenz and then sent to Venari, exclusive ZIEGLER partner in the United Kingdom, West Yorkshire Venari will also provide the relevant post-delivery services.

Venari and ZIEGLER have been working together since 2021 to actively introduce the Z-Class to the British market.

Pierce secures contract with Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announced it has secured a contract with the Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department in Arizona to place a Pierce® Volterra™ zero-emissions pumper with an Oshkosh patented parallel-electric drivetrain into service with the department’s busiest station, Station No. 2.

Gilbert Fire and Rescue’s Volterra electric pumper will be the third placement for Pierce, with others including the City of Madison, Wisconsin Fire Department, and the City of Portland, Oregon Fire and Rescue. All locations represent vastly different climates, allowing Pierce to collect vehicle performance data for the Volterra electric fire truck in various environmental conditions.

The Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department is led by Fire Chief Rob Duggan and is made up of 11 fire stations and 276 members who are dedicated to finding and utilizing resources to improve service delivery to the community’s residents.

Chief Duggan commented: “We are excited for the opportunity to partner with Pierce to add the Volterra electric pumper to our fire fleet because this partnership reflects and exemplifies Gilbert’s mission to anticipate and recognize the current and future needs of all who reside in the areas we serve.

“An additional attribute critical to our department is the Volterra pumper will allow us the benefit of exploring ways to eliminate cancer-causing diesel exhaust particles from our fire stations.”

Chief Duggan added, “Pierce brought a fair and balanced approach to our early discussions and understood the importance of ensuring positive outcomes for both sides. The support of our mayor, town council, town management, and the many departments which support our department has also been instrumental in this agreement and will continue to be in the years to come.”

In collaboration with Gilbert Fire and Rescue, Pierce will continue developing and evaluating the Pierce Volterra electric vehicle. As part of this development process, Gilbert’s arid, subtropical climate, intense heat during summer months, and high UV index will provide valuable exposure and insight to additional operational environments the electric vehicle must withstand.

Magirus unveils latest unit in its Next Generation Firefighting portfolio

Magirus has officially unveiled the latest edition to its Next Generation Firefighting portflio – the Wolf CI tactical logistics platform design to support fire brigades and disaster control situations.

Having already handed over the first Wolf R1 to a customer this year, the story of Magirus’ remote-operated tactical units continues with the launch of the Wolf C1 at the Florian trade fair in Dresden.

The Magirus Wolf C1 is part of Magirus’ Next Generation Firefighting product portfolio which sees the interplay of networking, robotics and the continuous development of practical innovations which is reflected in the new addition.

The Wolf C1 is a flexible, supportive transport and logistics robot with its universal swap body system that meets the motto of finding the right solution for every context in every respect providing extremely high off-road capability as a powerful tracked vehicle.

The easy-to-use lift table design ensures simple lifting and picking up of various loads. The application possibilities are very versatile and simple due to its adaptability and the connection possibility with modular accessories. Exclusive: Firefighting on the runway with Ziegler

IFSJ sat down with Fabian Schmidt, Product Manager, ARFF Vehicles at Ziegler to talk about the new Z6 with Hybrid Drive

Can you tell me about yourself, your position at Ziegler and your background in the industry?

I am product manager for aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARRF) vehicles and am responsible for all aspects and issues regarding any firefighting vehicles which are in use at airports to secure safety on runways. It is very important to be in close contact to the end user to know about their needs, wants and wishes. ZIEGLER offers two types of ARFF vehicles, one on commercial standard chassis – the Advancer – and one on non-commercial chassis – our Z-Class product family.

I have worked for ZIEGLER Group for 14 years and since the beginning of my career I have been in close contact with airports and the wide array of people who work there. I come from a background in technical studies with an Engineers degree. In addition, over my career I have gained insights into the work of an airport firefighter on site of several airports.

Can you talk about the Z6 Hybrid: its development, why it was created, and some of its technical information?

The idea behind this development – together with Titan as chassis manufacturer – is to support airports with their efforts to reduce emissions but to still have an operational vehicle which simultaneously fulfils all relevant standards and norms independently from HV-battery charge conditions. For that reason, we have stuck with the diesel engine for the conventional version of the Z6.

Regular journeys and movements the vehicle carries out can be emission-free. For alarm drives, the Z6 Hybrid provides high performance and power levels as both power sources – the combustion engine and electric motor – are working together and lead to better acceleration and shorter intervention time.

The vehicle has both the Diesel engine with 566 kW and an electric engine with 230 kW (continuous) up to 280 kW (peak). There is also a lithium-ion battery pack with an installed energy of 104 kWh on board. Charging this is possible with an CCS 2 – fast charger (650 Volt DC) or an on-board charger (400 V / 32 A / 22kW).

Can you tell me about the planned field-testing for the Z6?

The next step for the Z6 will be testing that it performs safe and stable drive and operation when using the hybrid system. The testing will involve validation and verification of calculated and estimated performance figures, such as its fully electric drive range and its emergency response capabilities in combined hybrid drive mode.

After this basic testing there will be a field test under training and operation conditions carried out in cooperation with Fraport AG on site on Frankfurt Airport, Germany. Due to selection of SCANIA Hybrid standard components, we are sure it will achieve all expected vehicle performance figures and in addition we also guarantee a professional after sales service.

What has the user response been like for the Z6 Hybrid?

There is big interest in the new Z6 Hybrid because everyone is working towards strengthening their environmental and climate protection activity. Airports aim to become greener and more sustainable and the fire departments are confident in the optimised performance of the Z6 as a way to help reach that goal.

What special requirements are needed for airport firefighting vehicles?

Constant readiness. We are talking about a vehicle with a huge gross vehicle weight due to high volumes of extinguishing agents of water, foam and powder. This Z6 Hybrid, for example, carries over 14 tonnes which when combined with the vehicle weight comes to around 39 tonnes. The vehicle must be ready to be deployed to any point of the airport as fast as possible in case of an emergency.

The end user expects easy operation and handling of the vehicle. This is ensured through our intuitive operating concept Z-Control. The vehicles at the airport must manage high speeds whilst driving under extreme conditions with tight curves and turns. For safe cornering, the vehicles have a very low centre of gravity and in a critical drive situation a roll-over warning and stability assistant will activate.

What are your thoughts on the future of electric vehicles in firefighting?

We will continue keep our eyes open and maintain close contact and technical evaluation with our partners like chassis manufacturers. Internally we will continue to work on adequate and compatible solutions for our extinguishing technology. Besides the positive environmental impact, electric engines will provide more efficiency and performance which will be crucial for our business fields.

Is Ziegler working on anything or does it have any future plans of note that you would like to mention?

We are continuously working on the optimisation of our product, based on the very welcome feedback of our customers. In addition to that, our innovation team and product management will keep their eyes on the needs and trends of the customers and the market. The next product launch will be the next generation of our portable pump.

In addition, due to the megatrend of digital transformation, we will also be championing our digital products Z-Connect and Z-Remote and are dedicated to extend our cooperation with the IMBOS network. This will provide holistic vehicle management, operations management, remote and predictive maintenance services including E-mobility.

Exclusive: Mark Fusco, President at Rosenbauer America, talks supporting the mission of saving lives and protecting property

IFSJ caught up with Mark Fusco, the newly appointed President at Rosenbauer America, to discuss supply chain issues, electric vehicles and plans for the future of the business

First of all, congratulations on the appointment – how does it feel?

It is an honour. Rosenbauer is in a strong position in the market and as a company. We’re positioned for a lot of growth, we’ve made a lot of investments over the last several years. For me personally, this is a great opportunity to contribute on the long tradition and heritage of the company and be a part of its future is an extremely exciting. I’m very humbled and thankful for it.

Can you tell me a little about yourself, your background, and your career leading up to your appointment as President?

I’ve been with Rosenbauer for nearly two years. I was brought on as its Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The privilege I’ve had in the last few years is being a part of the leadership team to develop and craft the forward direction of the business. Learning the company and getting involved in its products, the market that we serve, and the customers was something that I was focused on for the last few years leading up to this role.

Prior to joining Rosenbauer, my background is in agriculture specifically in heavy equipment manufacturing. When you look at the products, there are a lot of similarities between large agricultural equipment and fire trucks. They are customised, complex and built in a way that is designed to serve communities.

In 20 years, I spent 13 of them with John Deere and had an opportunity to work in a variety of different capacities including from a product development standpoint, dealer development aspect, field sales and factory operations. My last three leadership roles at Deere included sitting over its Asia and Africa business, I repatriated to the US and was responsible for its tactical marketing organisation, and last finished leading its eastern US business division where I was responsible for its dealer channel, complete goods sales, service and parts organisations.

What have you been working on since taking over as President?

My initial focus, which is really an industry situation, is the supply chain dynamic that any heavy manufacturer is currently faced with. Fire trucks, on road trucks, tractors – no matter what it might be, there is a necessity to manage the supply chain on a day-to-day, minute-to-minute basis. Our factory operations are an immediate focus for me so we can continue to build on the strong position the company has found over the last two years.

Fire departments are counting on us. Something we like to share with our team members is that we have the strongest order backlog in company history. There is a severe need for replacement apparatus in communities, with many making emergency purchases. It is an extreme focus for us to deliver trucks to the communities that desperately need them.

What are your thoughts on the firefighting vehicle market and the rise of electric vehicles?

From a new product development standpoint, the EV (electric vehicle) space has been something Rosenbauer worldwide has focused on for more than a decade. We have been involved with research and development, thought partnerships, working with leading universities, fire departments and outside industries such as automotive to really start to understand the EV trend.

Rosenbauer has developed the first fully electric fire truck in the world for full scale application. All the supporting elements that are needed to support customers in this new vehicle category is an area that has been a key focus for us. It is something that the entire company has enjoyed and is something I have taken hold of as we get closer to bringing the RTX electric fire truck to market.

Does Rosenbauer America have any plans in the pipeline for the years ahead that you would like to share?

A great product that we significantly invested in and did research on for about six years globally is the battery extinguishing system technology (BEST) to assist fire departments in combatting EV fires in a more sustainable and safe way than the previous practices. BEST is placed to solve the problem that is EV fires occurring on a radically increasing basis as the number of EVs continues to exponentially increase across the world. That has been a key focus, and we’ll continue to build upon that platform with enhancements and additional technology down the line.

We’ve also got a whole host of digital solutions that we recently brought to market globally which were launched within the last month. They are designed to help fire departments become more predictive and efficient with their firefighting capabilities. For example, with some of the different topography you can pinpoint a wildfire before it has started and develop a tactical strike team. We’ve got many technology products in pipeline in several different stages to assist fire departments in that regard.

We have a host of remote diagnostics in different machine type analytics and connected services that can proactively predict whether a fire apparatus has not been properly serviced for example, whether that means it has passed its service interval or needs an update that the department has been unable to attend to for whatever reason.

We are committed to looking at all the market segments and developing new products and new technology to bring to market whilst still supporting the current apparatus requirements of our customers.

There has been radical growth within our aerials business, with our smart aerials which have automated features, taking a lot of risk out of the operation of a complex vehicle. Some of the automated features and technology of our smart aerial has been widely accepted into the market and bringing safer operations, assisting many of the pain points of a fire department.

We recently brought out a new custom general chassis. We are now able to bring a custom truck to some markets that maybe didn’t have the funding or budgets historically, presenting a suitable price point without sacrificing the safety and benefits and features that a custom chassis offers.

Finally, do you have any predictions for the future of Rosenbauer America.

Some folks have asked me as I’ve come into the new role what we can expect over the next few years. The message I’ve been driving is to continue what we’re doing well to get us to this point, which is due in part to the hard work and commitment of team members throughout the company.

I fully expect us to become more integrated as an organisation. The Rosenbauer group is built from a variety of joint ventures or different business units. As we look to bring the company to the next level and set it up for the next 150 years, the increased collaboration amongst out campuses, leveraging what we do best in each of the areas is a big focus of mine. We’ve got a very hard working and committed culture that we want to continue to foster, leverage and build upon. We have new team members that are joining and ensuring we continue to do what we do well.

Also, with all the different dynamics externally, we put ourselves in a position of agility in what is probably going to be a continuing supply challenge environment. We are challenging ourselves to do things a little faster than we have before and counting on team members to raise ideas and promote a culture that is inclusive, forward driven, and committed to the fire service, which is really what Rosenbauer is all about.
