Why London’s ebike fires could make Black Friday costlier than expected

Record ebike fires prompt Black Friday warning

London Fire Brigade has issued a Black Friday warning to shoppers after recording its highest yearly total of e-bike and e-scooter battery fires in London.

The Brigade said firefighters are now attending an average of 18 incidents a month in 2025 where an e-bike or e-scooter battery is the cause.

According to the Brigade, fires involving lithium-ion batteries are fast, produce toxic smoke and can cause extensive damage in a short time.

This year two people have died in fires started by an e-bike in London, taking the total to five since 2023.

The Brigade stated that in all five incidents the person who died did not own the e-bike involved.

London Fire Brigade warned that products bought from online marketplaces can carry a higher fire risk due to weaker controls on batteries, chargers and conversion kits.

By comparison, the Brigade said high street retailers are more likely to sell products with batteries and chargers that comply with UKCA or CE safety standards.

Black Friday focus on ebike fires and unsafe deals

To reach shoppers during one of the busiest retail weeks of the year, the Brigade took its #ChargeSafe campaign into the West End on Tuesday 25 November 2025.

The campaign included an awareness video broadcast on the Piccadilly Lights screen in Piccadilly Circus, which the Brigade described as the largest digital screen in Europe.

Firefighters used the event to speak directly with members of the public, share advice and hand out leaflets on safer charging and purchasing.

London Fire Commissioner Jonathan Smith said: “We have already tackled a record number of fires this year which have been caused by either an e-bike or e-scooter, we urge Londoners to be careful when purchasing one of these items.

“As we have seen, these fires have devastating consequences – they are fast, explosive, toxic and can be fatal.

“Buying from an online marketplace could significantly increase the risk of fire due to the lack of regulation.

“Without knowing it, you could be purchasing a faulty, damaged or incompatible product and putting yourself, and everyone around you at risk.

“Everyone wants a great Black Friday deal, but please buy e-bikes and e-scooters from reputable retailers where products are more likely to meet UK safety standards.”

The Brigade urged people thinking of buying e-bikes, e-scooters or conversion kits in seasonal sales to prioritise products that meet recognised safety standards.

It warned that short-term savings on unregulated products could lead to property loss, injury or death if a battery fails and starts a fire.

Residents describe impact of home battery fires

London Fire Brigade highlighted several case studies to show the domestic impact of e-bike and e-scooter fires.

One case involved a mother-of-three from Bromley, Jo Frost, whose home of 23 years was destroyed after an e-bike conversion kit bought from a second-hand marketplace failed.

Her 14-year-old son, his friend and the family dog escaped the fire, but the property and its contents were lost.

Jo Frost said: “The e-bike was charging in the front room when it burst into flames, my son and his friend were trapped on the first floor due to the fire spreading up the stairs.

“Thankfully, he had the quick thinking to shut his bedroom door, preventing the fire from spreading to his room.

“In minutes my family lost our home and everything inside due to a fire caused by an e-bike.

“Everything I lost is material, luckily my son Ollie, his friend and the dog are all safe, but we have had to start from scratch.

“I wasn’t aware of the dangers of buying a conversion kit online – or that it wasn’t regulated.

“I hope that hearing my story will warn others of the potential dangers.”

The Brigade said conversion kits can increase fire risk when not installed correctly, particularly if batteries and chargers are bought separately and are incompatible.

It explained that sub-standard or mismatched chargers can lead to overcharging, which raises the chance of a battery going into thermal runaway and igniting.

E-scooter flat fire case shared at campaign event

At the Piccadilly Circus event, London Fire Brigade also shared the experience of London resident Jahmell Campbell, whose first-floor flat was left uninhabitable after an e-scooter fire.

He was at home with his father and grandmother in March when the e-scooter burst into flames.

Campbell said the battery had been charged 45 minutes before the fire and had begun cutting out earlier in the day.

He told the Brigade that he had purchased the device online for £1,200 a year earlier and had not previously experienced problems.

Jahmell said: “It was like a grenade had been thrown into the flat.

“The e-scooter had been charged 45 mins before the fire.

“I bought the device a year ago online for £1200 and never had any trouble.

“The only complication I had was on the day of the fire when the battery kept cutting out.

“I jumped out of the front first floor flat window to escape.

“My dad and my grandma escaped via the back of the property.

“I would never get another e-scooter. No chance!

“I am not sure how we all made it out of the house alive.

“My dad had bad nightmares after the incident.

“I hope London Fire Brigade’s Piccadilly Lights event raises much more awareness.”

The Brigade said the incident showed how quickly an internal wall structure can fail under intense heat from a battery fire.

According to the Brigade, the flat was completely destroyed, leaving the household displaced.

Campaign partnerships and regulatory changes on e-bike safety

London Fire Brigade said the #ChargeSafe campaign was launched in April 2023 after the death of Sofia Duarte, the first Londoner to die in an e-bike fire.

The Brigade reported that incidents have continued to rise since the campaign launch, with this year recording the highest number of e-bike and e-scooter fires to date.

To reach people at the point of purchase, London Fire Brigade has partnered with Amazon so that #ChargeSafe safety advice can be shared with customers when they buy relevant products.

The Brigade has also worked with Trading Standards and delivery company Deliveroo to extend messaging to people who use e-bikes and e-scooters for work.

London Fire Brigade said it supported the Government during development of the Product Regulation and Meteorology Act, which passed earlier in 2025.

Once implemented, the Act is expected to regulate the sale of poor-quality e-bikes, e-scooters, batteries and chargers through tighter product rules.

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for the Fire Service, said: “E-bikes are top of the wish list for many people shopping in the sales, in the run up to Christmas, but buying online can come with risks.

“In London we’ve seen a record number of e-bike and e-scooter fires this year – with most taking place in people’s homes.

“I urge Londoners to think twice about buying an e-bike or conversion kit from online marketplaces and encourage them to shop with reputable retailers – if it seems too good to be true it probably is and could be extremely dangerous.

“The Mayor and I will continue to support the work of the London Fire Brigade and partners to improve e-bike safety, strengthen regulation and raise awareness of the dangers, as we build a safer London for everyone.”

London Fire Brigade said it will continue to use community events and partnerships to share practical charging and storage advice and to press for tighter controls on unsafe products.

BESA calls time on disinterested third in UK construction competence drive

BESA sets out disinterested third challenge

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has called for a disinterested third of UK construction professionals to be driven out of the industry if they will not raise their standards, following its annual conference in London.

BESA Chief Executive David Frise told delegates at The Brewery, London, that one third of people in construction and related disciplines already work to high professional, legal and technical standards.

He said a further third want to reach that level and need support to do so.

The final third, he argued, are “simply not interested” in improving quality, safety or sustainability.

Frise linked this split directly to the need for better control over competence and compliance across project teams.

David Frise, Chief Executive at BESA, said: “Just doing enough is not good enough.”

BESA used the conference to launch its Member Pledge initiative, which asks member firms to place competence and compliance at the centre of their operations and supply chains.

The association said the pledge is designed to give clients clearer assurance because BESA members must pass a technical audit.

BESA reported that it expelled 14 members earlier in 2025 for failing to meet its required standard.

Frise described that decision as proof that membership is tied to measurable competence.

Member Pledge links competence, membership and supply chains

BESA said the Member Pledge is intended to create a commercial incentive for clients to choose audited firms over those without such checks.

The association explained that firms signing the pledge commit to evidence their competence and to expect the same from their subcontractors and suppliers.

It argued that this approach can help address inconsistent quality and compliance through multi-layered supply chains.

BESA said its stance is also a response to persistent procurement and payment practices that place pressure on specialist contractors.

Speakers noted that competence efforts will struggle if contractors cannot secure work on sustainable terms.

They also highlighted the risk that firms willing to cut corners on quality will underbid more compliant competitors.

Procurement practices under fire from contractors

Procurement frameworks and contract terms were described as a central threat to the future of many specialist firms.

Remi Suzan, Managing Director of Gratte Brothers Group, said: “Procurement is killing our industry.”

He warned that many projects do not allow contractors to work at an acceptable profit margin.

Suzan stated that risk is often pushed unfairly down the supply chain.

He said clients are not “bad people” but will rarely remove risk from contracts voluntarily.

Remi Suzan, Managing Director of Gratte Brothers Group, explained: “If there are cost constraints then the contractor is bound to get aggressive and start looking for mistakes in the specification so they can charge for variations.”

Suzan pointed to recent insolvencies at ISG and HE Simm “among others” as examples of what can happen when margins and risk sharing become unsustainable.

He also reported that the quality of tender information has been deteriorating, making accurate pricing harder.

Lilly Gallafent, Director at Cast Consultancy, acknowledged that consultants contribute to this picture because they advise clients on what levels of contractual risk to accept.

Gallafent observed that many clients focus on short-term commercial wins during contract negotiations.

Lilly Gallafent, Director at Cast Consultancy, said: “Change needs to start with clients…and we need to persuade them that even if they feel they have ‘won’ now [in a contract negotiation] they won’t feel that in a few years’ time [when all the problems become apparent].”

She added that better procurement models already exist but are not widely used.

Gallafent reported that her firm tries to allocate risk more evenly by analysing it in more detail, but this depends on client agreement.

Public sector pressures and Building Safety Act duties

Noble Francis from the Construction Products Association told the conference that public sector procurement faces similar pressures.

He said civil servants can struggle to obtain Treasury approval if they plan to specify solutions that exceed allocated budgets, even when they are seeking better long-term value and quality.

Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association, said: “The government has lots of theory and value matrices about how to improve procurement, but this rarely reflects reality…and the industry knows how it works so there will always be companies bidding work at the lower level.”

Speakers set this against the wider building safety agenda.

Gallafent said more clients are now considering the competence of their supply chains because of heightened awareness of legal responsibilities under the Building Safety Act.

Francis added that the Act makes clear that legal risk cannot be passed down contracts.

He said the legislation is changing incentives by placing formal responsibilities on clients.

Neil Hope-Collins from the Office of the Building Safety Regulator highlighted that clients are legally responsible for ensuring safety-related work is properly resourced.

He also said contractors are legally required to confirm that their clients understand their duties under the Act before work starts.

Competence of clients, late payment and retentions

Jon Vanstone, Chair of the Industry Competence Committee, said the competence of clients is a priority for the Building Safety Regulator.

He reported that guidance aimed specifically at clients will be published later in 2025.

Vanstone also acknowledged that building services and mechanical, electrical and plumbing firms can struggle to identify who the legal client is on complex projects.

The conference linked these issues to the government’s ongoing consultation on late payment and retentions.

Industry body Build UK said the current safety regime could change commercial performance and payment behaviour.

Build UK Chief Executive Suzannah Nichol described current arrangements for performance and payment as unstable.

She argued that the safety framework is “a massive game changer for performance and late payment”.

Nichol criticised retentions as a mechanism that removes cash flow from supply chains.

She questioned why companies remain in a supply chain if the client does not trust them enough to avoid retentions.

Nichol urged building engineering contractors to use the new safety framework when discussing cost and risk with clients.

She said clients should understand what they receive if they focus only on lower prices.

Nichol also linked the role of trade associations to this conversation.

She said clients should be using members of trade bodies, provided that membership criteria reflect measurable competence.

She pointed to the BESA Member Pledge as an example of how associations can set out what their membership represents for buyers.

How competence and procurement debates affect safety-focused roles

The issues raised at the BESA conference could affect building services engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, fire engineering consultants and system installers who rely on stable, competence-based procurement routes.

For these groups, the Member Pledge and BESA’s decision to expel 14 firms show how membership criteria can be used to demonstrate audited competence to clients.

Contractors and fire-protection specialists working under the Building Safety Act may need to document how they test that clients understand their legal duties before accepting work.

Facility managers and project clients in high-risk buildings can be directly affected by the clarification that legal responsibility for safety cannot be passed down the supply chain.

Procurement officers in both private and public sectors may have to balance budget constraints against the need to appoint competent, audited firms that can meet safety obligations over the life of a project.

Discussions on late payment and retentions are also relevant for specialist contractors delivering fire safety systems, where cash flow and risk transfer can influence their ability to maintain standards.

Our newest portable detection device, the ALTAIR io™ 6 Multigas Detector, will be making its European debut at the show.

As the newest addition to the MSA Connected Work Platform, this six-gas detector is ideal for confined space monitoring and sampling applications.

It will be MSA’s first cellular-connected gas detector featuring an integrated pump; features MSA’s XCell® sensors; has a large, highly visible screen; a removable, rechargeable external battery; and is small enough for handheld use or to wear.

How does the ALTAIR io 6 fit into the Connected Work Platform?

It joins the ALTAIR io 4 on the Connected Work Platform.

While the ALTAIR io 4 is primarily used as a personal, continuous monitoring device, the ALTAIR io 6 is primarily designed for sampling confined spaces on job sites and detecting leaks and spills, supporting emergency responses, and is even small enough to wear as a personal monitor.

The devices share similar technologies, with both detectors having the same user interface and using MSA Grid software.

This makes it easy for safety managers to integrate both devices and connect them into their fleet of gas monitors.

When combined, this can create a powerful Connected Work experience to enhance safety management on worksites.

MSA Grid provides information about device location and alerts in real-time, while also providing immediate access to data from a single device or fleet of devices.

The devices are complementary, so you don’t need to have an ALTAIR io 4 to have an ALTAIR io 6 and vice versa.

How does MSA Safety define the concept of connected PPE and what benefits does it bring to users in the field?

We look at connected PPE as solutions that can be relied on to provide data and insights to help improve worker and worksite safety.

This can include facilitating adequate maintenance programs, keeping inspections and records up-to-date, and identifying issues before they pose a risk to workplace safety.

For workers in the field, it can be about having the ability to take action when seconds count.

With connected devices, like wearable gas detectors, for a worker to be able to alert a crew on a worksite, or alert a safety supervisor onsite or offsite, to a potential danger within seconds, that’s a huge benefit.

We see it as a way to empower organizations to leverage connected technology to help keep their workers and worksites safe.

What technical or operational challenges does MSA Safety hear about when embedding connectivity within protective equipment and safety programs?

We’re happy to see that in today’s market, more and more companies are leveraging data to drive safety and operational decisions.

But, there are those still trying to figure out how to implement and make a connected safety program work for them.

That’s why we believe it’s important to meet customers where they are, whether it’s introducing a few connected devices and showing how the data can be impactful for their worksite or bringing in an entire fleet of connected devices and start generating reports from day one.

Otherwise, we hear a lot about the difficulty of accessing data easily in real time, especially with pumped gas detection.

That is why the ALTAIR io 6 will hold a unique place in the detection market.

By being a robust gas detector and having an integrated pump, and automatic cellular connectivity and integration with MSA Grid software all in one handheld device, it can ultimately help to address the real-time data challenge customers are facing.

How does MSA Safety balance the complexity of connected features with the need for reliability and ease of use in demanding environments?

We see connectivity as transforming hardware from traditional PPE to a technology-based, future-forward safety solution.

For connected devices to have the impact and to provide the protection workers are expecting, the network is an important component to the device.

The most advanced wearables feature built-in cellular connectivity and deploy right out of the box in seconds, which is what happens with the ALTAIR io 4 and will happen with the ALTAIR io 6.

There is no waiting, and no IT required, making for a better ease of use experience.

For years, we’ve taken pride in setting the standard for ruggedness and durability with our portable detectors.

These devices can go into some of the harshest environments, and that’s why our engineers test our instruments to the extremes.

From cold environments, hot environments, humidity, dropping from heights, tumble tests, spraying and splashing, they go through all the rigorous tests that every MSA portable gas detector goes through.

Which sectors are driving the strongest demand for connected PPE and how is MSA Safety adapting to those specific needs?

The strongest demand is coming across the construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and utilities markets, but we are seeing an increase in demand within the fire service.

Regardless of the industry, we know the demand is there for connected solutions, especially for devices that help with accountability and are easy to service.

MSA devices utilise MSA ID tags for digital device assignment, and using these help safety managers, operations managers or incident commanders know who is using what devices, and where they are located.

The ALTAIR io 4 users have been using ID tags for the past few years, and now with the same ability coming with the ALTAIR io 6 and their ability to automatically upload data to the Grid in real time, getting readings from a pumped detector in real-time will help with visibility and accountability.

Plus, a feature that customers like is being able to see what detectors need maintenance.

From an overdue bump test to sensor replacements, being able to identify maintenance issues in real time can help keep crews working with proper equipment which is great for safety and productivity.

Is MSA Safety applying data analytics, AI or cloud-based systems to improve incident insight and predictive safety outcomes?

We are exploring ways to continue to enhance our safety solutions and thoughtfully looking at how AI can make a positive impact on worker safety.

We’re exploring ways to run AI programs to analyse the data in MSA Grid and provide more information on safety habits and behaviours, to help safety managers understand how devices are being used or develop training protocols.

Fire Aware calls for culture shift on duty of care in fire safety supply chain

Fire Aware links culture to duty of care

Fire Aware has urged the fire safety industry supply chain to raise standards and focus on duty of care through its expanding membership body.

The organisation said its core message is that working in fire safety involves a moral responsibility as well as legal compliance.

Fire Aware framed its work around protecting people, arguing that the buildings and fire protection measures delivered by the supply chain must meet obligations to end users.

The body described fire safety work as more than a job and said activity in the sector should be treated as a vocation.

Gavin Skelly, Fire Aware CEO, said: “We are receiving a lot of positive feedback from the supply chain at all levels from large organisations to smaller businesses.

“They all want to play their part and we are asking all of those working this industry to think about their duty of care and what that means.

“Ultimately, we are all protecting people’s lives.

According to Fire Aware, membership is available to organisations and individuals across the fire safety industry supply chain.

The body said its members include designers, developers, asset owners and managers and other stakeholders involved in building delivery and maintenance.

Membership is also available to domestic trades, material suppliers and building management teams.

Fire Aware stated that it is engaging with sectors such as hotel and leisure, commercial landlords, private landlords and local authorities.

The organisation explained that members can provide training courses on fire safety and management, including content on relevant legislation.

Training is aimed at roles such as designers, main contractors and domestic trades, as well as material suppliers and building management functions.

Fire Aware said this approach is intended to support understanding of legal duties and practical responsibilities across different parts of the built environment sector.

Charters aim to reshape industry culture

Fire Aware said it aims to change the culture of the built environment sector through a moral code of conduct.

The organisation is developing a series of charters that set out how member companies are expected to behave when upholding their duty of care.

According to Fire Aware, these charters are designed to influence decisions in design, construction, maintenance and management activities.

The body described itself as a recognised membership organisation for the built environment and related sectors.

It said members share a common aim to work and trade responsibly in line with best practice standards.

Survitec, a survival technology company, has won the Safety in Bulk Handling (Marine) category at the International Bulk Journal Awards for its XChange Programme, a service-led model for managing liferafts and immersion suits across the global shipping industry.

According to Survitec, the judges highlighted the programme’s focus on service delivery and its impact on safety, logistics and environmental performance.

Survitec explained that the XChange Programme replaces conventional ownership and servicing arrangements with a flexible model based on ready-to-use liferafts and immersion suits supplied and exchanged in port.

Under this approach, equipment is delivered in a fully compliant state and swapped during port calls, rather than being taken out of service for inspection or recertification.

The company reported that this removes the uncertainty associated with traditional servicing, where operators may face delays ranging from six to 48 hours while equipment is checked and approved.

Survitec stated that vessels enrolled in XChange always sail with fully certified equipment, while the company manages compliance schedules, logistics and rotation of assets.

According to the company, this allows operators to maintain focus on vessel operations while Survitec oversees inspection intervals and certification requirements.

Addressing downtime, compliance and administrative burden

Survitec noted that ship operators have historically faced unpredictable downtime, servicing bottlenecks and expiring certificates when working with conventional safety-equipment ownership models.

The company added that these issues have been compounded by the environmental impact of prematurely disposing of equipment that still has serviceable life.

The company stated that this extends the working life of liferafts and immersion suits and reduces the amount of material sent to landfill, while maintaining full compliance with SOLAS requirements.

Survitec added that the XChange model also cuts emissions linked to unnecessary shipping movements and port congestion.
