FLIR has reported growing demand for its thermal imaging cameras as global installations of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) increase.

The company cited the rise in thermal risks such as fire and toxic gas release as key reasons for the adoption of fixed thermal cameras in energy infrastructure.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), battery capacity in the United States increased by 89 percent in 2024.

FLIR stated that the risk of thermal runaway – where heat spreads from one battery cell to another – presents a growing hazard for fire and rescue teams, energy operators and local communities.

BESS use increases in line with renewable energy investment

FLIR explained that BESS installations are expanding due to their role in balancing the power grid during periods of inconsistent supply and high demand.

The company cited data from S&P Global showing that nearly 9.2 gigawatts of BESS capacity were installed in the United States by late November 2024.

FLIR said that battery systems also support electric vehicle infrastructure by reducing strain on local grids during high-demand charging events.

The company stated that BESS contributes to grid reliability and reduces fossil fuel reliance by storing renewable electricity for later use.

Safety concerns linked to BESS include fire, gas and infrastructure damage

FLIR reported that fire safety concerns are growing due to the increase in BESS deployments.

The company highlighted data from Rho Motion showing that 10.5 gigawatt hours of new capacity were added to the global energy network in February 2025 alone.

FLIR warned that thermal runaway incidents can lead to toxic gas emissions, equipment damage and large-scale fires if not detected and mitigated early.

The company explained that hydrogen fluoride gas, released in some incidents, can present serious health and environmental risks.

FLIR stated that fixed thermal imaging systems with integrated analytics are being used to detect abnormal temperature rises before they escalate into fires.

The company said these systems are capable of triggering suppression systems and alarm protocols when temperatures breach preset safety thresholds.

FLIR explained that early detection through thermal monitoring can reduce damage, improve safety and support faster emergency response.

The company provides thermal fire prevention systems for a range of industrial applications, including battery energy storage infrastructure.

Advisory restructure strengthens Serco’s consultancy offer in the Middle East

Serco has confirmed that Climatize and ExperienceLab have been incorporated into its advisory arm +impact.

The company said the integration will expand its capabilities in user-centred design, operational transformation and sustainability consulting.

According to Serco, the full transition of Climatize into +impact in the United Arab Emirates is expected by the end of 2026.

It noted that the integration has already been completed for operations in Saudi Arabia and international markets.

Leadership changes reflect new structure

Serco stated that the transition has involved internal leadership changes to support its service delivery.

Rena Baba, previously Director of ExperienceLab Middle East, has been appointed as Director of Experience Design and Innovation at +impact in the Middle East.

Engi Jaber, who leads Climatize, will now serve as Associate Partner – Sustainability at +impact.

The company said these changes highlight the importance of both individuals in shaping the advisory business’s future direction.

A new agreement between professional bodies in the UK and Australia aims to ease recruitment difficulties in environmental health by creating cross-country career pathways.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and Environmental Health Australia (EHA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that enables Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to practice in Australia and vice versa.

The two organisations stated that the agreement results from years of collaboration to align professional competencies.

Long-standing vacancies raise concern about public health services

Both countries face ongoing challenges filling EHO roles, with many vacancies remaining unfilled for extended periods.

The shortage of qualified EHOs has prompted concern over the capacity to maintain effective public health protection across the UK and Australia.

The agreement is expected to help relieve workforce pressures by broadening employment opportunities and encouraging more candidates to enter the profession.

Saving made simple: How composite extinguishers are replacing metal worldwide with Britannia Fire

When Britannia Fire launched its very first P50 composite fire extinguisher from our Norfolk factory 15 years ago, we knew we had created a product that could change the direction of the entire market.

 Since then, with demand growing, we have ceased our metal fire extinguisher production and re-focussed our entire business on composite models.

Composite fire extinguishers are made from a unique combination of durable plastic and aramid fibres.

As a result, they are strong, lightweight and don’t corrode.

It is now widely accepted that they are superior to traditional metal versions in that they are easier to maintain, longer-lasting and better for the environment.

Crucially, composite models don’t need an annual service, just a simple visual check by a responsible member of staff and a refurbishment after 10 years.

 Today, we have a raft of customers undergoing their first refurbishments, with sales continuing to outstrip supply.

Global demand is also growing, particularly across Europe and the Middle East.

Partnerships with key distributors like fire safety company Prymos in Germany and Concorde Technical, part of the Concorde-Corodex Group in UAE, have introduced P50s to these important markets and are helping to facilitate a global shift away from metal fire extinguishers to composite versions.

So why are customers making the switch? They are principally driven by three types of savings: cost-savings due to vastly reduced servicing needs and number of units required; time-savings thanks to simpler checks and maintenance; and finally significant carbon-savings to help meet sustainability targets.

An end to costly servicing

Across the world, the fire extinguisher market is dominated by metal products manufactured cheaply in China.

The problem with metal is that the casing can rust and seals can degrade, causing leaks or faults.

As a result, for safety reasons, annual servicing has been standard practice for many years.

Traditionally, a qualified engineer would need to open the fire extinguishers every year and test the lining, seals and pressure.

This frequent servicing comes at a significant cost and inconvenience to the customer, but is considered essential for metal extinguishers.

Composite designs are revolutionary in that they don’t corrode, so have totally changed previous servicing timescales.

P50s just need an annual visual check carried out by a competent member of staff.

They have a life-span of 20 years and only need a full service and refurbishment once during this time, after 10 years.

Anglian Water has been using P50s for the last decade.

Many of its extinguishers are located in isolated plants and hard to reach sites, which made annual servicing difficult before they made the switch, as Michelle Ketley explained at the time: “It was a logistical nightmare for us to bring them in, get them serviced and then get them back out to remote sites, whilst all the time leaving us vulnerable to fire whilst they were away from site.

“It has been a massive cost and time saving for Anglian Water.”

Improved site security

The logistical difficulties of annual servicing become even more complex in industries where fire extinguisher locations require security clearance or safety inductions for service crews.

Britannia Fire’s distributor in UAE, Concorde Technical, supplies P50s to clients in the oil and gas industries, where fire points can be remote and open to the elements and site safety and security is paramount.

 Senior Product Specialist at Concorde Technical, Ahmad Sabha, comments: “Britannia Fire’s P50 composite extinguisher range offers exceptional durability in harsh environments, thanks to its highly corrosion-resistant design.

“Unlike traditional steel extinguishers that often require frequent replacements due to corrosion, the P50 range significantly reduces maintenance costs, saving clients from the need for repetitive replacements.”

NATS, the UK’s leading provider of air traffic control services has over 100 operational sites across the country, housing specialist radar, navigation and communication equipment to monitor and control air traffic in the UK.

“Many are situated in remote locations so it’s vital we ensure that efficient and dependable fire safety operations are in place 24/7, 365 days a year.

“Working with Britannia, we adopted their new P50 fire extinguishers which are far more dependable than traditional steel extinguishers, reducing maintenance and enabling checks as part of routine site inspections.”

Fewer extinguishers

As well as saving on servicing costs, P50s have the added benefit that they are multi-purpose.

 Both the water mist and fluorine-free foam versions are suitable for Class A (carbonaceous) and electrical fires up to 1000V, with the P50 ECO foam additionally suitable for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class F (fats/oils) fires.

 Crucially, this means that one or the other should suffice in most locations and that CO2 extinguishers for suppressing electrical or class B fires, are often no longer required at all.

Many of our new customers can reduce the number of extinguishers they need by half, saving costs.

A single fire extinguisher at each fire point also makes it far easier to use confidently in the event of a fire.

Precious time in an emergency can be wasted when faced with a choice.

The University of Brighton has a community of 2500 staff and 20,000 students, many of whom live on site, so fire safety is a top priority.

 Fire Safety Manager, Nick Greenwood, comments: “The P50 is suitable for a multitude of fires, including electrical fires, meaning we only needed one at every fire point rather than two.

This streamlined things considerably and now makes it easier for the end user, who can simply point and shoot!

“In addition, the cost savings were huge.

“We cut the number of fire extinguishers needed by half and have not had to fork out for expensive third-party servicing over the last 10 years, saving over £200,000.”

London’s Heathrow Airport is another customer that has benefitted from replacing its multiple sets of two extinguishers with single P50 Foam multi-purpose units.

This, along with reduced servicing costs, has saved the airport more than £1m.

Adam Watson, Terminal 5 Asset Manager says: “The traditional setup of a foam/CO2 dual extinguisher point, requires the user to make the correct selection of extinguisher type in the event of fire.

“The P50 is a single point extinguisher covering both A & B type fires.

“This eliminates the need for a human decision and ensures only the correct extinguisher can be selected; the P50.

“This reduces safety risk and increases our ability to get everyone home safe.”

A sustainable solution

Finally, over and above the compelling cost, time and convenience factors, composite fire extinguishers are generally much kinder to the environment.

They have a 20 year life-span, are easy to recycle and require less energy to produce.

Our P50 production process emits 22% less carbon than metal alternatives and is partially powered by solar energy.

Customers across the world are striving to meet sustainability targets and are keen to reduce their impact on the environment, as Ahmad Sabha confirms in UAE: “The resilience of the P50 aligns with sustainability goals, supporting our clients in their efforts towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by providing a long-lasting, eco-friendly fire safety solution.”

Crucially, our entire P50 range is also free from harmful PFAS chemicals, which are typically found in traditional foam extinguishers.

 These ‘forever chemicals’ don’t break down in the environment and can be toxic.

Europe has placed a ban on firefighting foams containing PFAS, due to come into force in 2030, and the UK is expected to follow suit in the coming months.

These sustainability credentials were a key consideration for the University of Brighton, as Nick Greenwood comments: “Our previous fire extinguishers were non-recyclable, inferior imports from abroad that required costly servicing.

“Sustainability is one of the University’s core values so was a top consideration when it came to replacing them in 2015.

“Ten years on, it is now time to refurbish our P50 extinguishers.

“With the impending PFAS ban, we have decided to get ahead of the game and switch to the P50-ECO, which is free from PFAS or ‘forever’ chemicals.

“This will help us further minimise our environmental impact.”

Wildlife at risk as UK wildfires damage protected conservation areas

National Trust reports widespread habitat loss following spring wildfires

The National Trust has reported that wildlife and habitats across several of its sites have been severely affected by UK wildfires in recent weeks.

According to the organisation, the damage follows the driest March in decades and unseasonably warm conditions in April, contributing to one of the worst fire seasons the UK has experienced.

The National Trust stated that a 1,600-hectare fire at Abergwesyn Common in Powys, Mid Wales, has damaged critical habitat, with concerns raised over the likely destruction of the last known breeding grounds for golden plovers in the area.

Chris Smith, Countryside Manager for Mid and South Wales at the National Trust, said: “The sheer scale of the fire on Abergwesyn Common is hard to fathom.

“As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the impacts on wildlife are widespread, with birds’ nests, insects, amphibians and reptiles all scorched by fire.

“Whole ecosystems have been decimated and will remain altered well into the future.”

Smith added: “Alongside this, the huge loss of surface vegetation leaves the peat bogs we have been working hard to restore and rewet vulnerable to erosion and at further risk of fire and carbon loss.

“Where the flames burnt down to the peat soils, they will take hundreds of years to recover.”

Fires affect wildlife in Northern Ireland and other UK sites

The National Trust reported that recent fires in the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland have damaged habitats for species including grayling and small heath butterflies, rove beetles, skylarks and peregrine falcons.

It stated that the area is also home to Northern Ireland’s only native lizard, the viviparous lizard, and serves as a seasonal breeding ground for wheatears migrating from Africa.

According to the Trust, data collected after a major fire in the same region in 2021 showed reductions in both species diversity and population sizes, raising concerns that similar impacts may occur again.

On Exmoor, the National Trust noted that rangers have photographed species such as meadow pipits and slow worms foraging on scorched land following a 45-hectare fire last month.

Fire incidents impact conservation efforts and cause financial losses

The National Trust stated that some fires have undone years of conservation work across multiple regions.

At Howden Moor in the Peak District, the organisation reported that a fire stretching two kilometres caused an estimated £30,000 in damage.

It added that investigations into the causes of recent fires are ongoing at several sites, with fire services continuing to assess the extent of the damage and source of ignition.

National Trust calls for policy change and public responsibility

The National Trust said it is modifying its land management strategies to reduce fire risks, including rewetting landscapes and planting mosses that retain moisture.

It reported that these measures aim to increase resilience and help natural areas act as fire breaks during future incidents.

Ben McCarthy, Head of Nature Conservation at the National Trust, said:
“While the arrival of sunny weather was a cause for celebration for many, for some of our countryside teams, and of course for our fire services, it’s been a very tough few weeks.”

McCarthy added: “The vast majority of fires in the UK are started by people – whether accidentally or not – rather than by natural causes.

“So while we want everyone to enjoy the outdoors, we’re calling on people to be responsible as even a small spark can cause a fire. “Please call 999 if you see a fire or any suspicious behaviour.”

He continued: “As well as greater public education and engagement, as the climate gets hotter, we also need urgent Government action to help the UK mitigate and adapt to this and the many other climate risks facing our cherished yet threatened landscapes.”

CLOU Electronics completes TS-800 fire safety test for Aqua-C2.5 energy storage system

Fire safety test evaluates CLOU Aqua-C2.5 system performance in dense station layout

CLOU Electronics has reported that its Aqua-C2.5 utility-scale energy storage system completed the CSA TS-800 Large-Scale Fire Test (LSFT) in February 2025.

The test, conducted in California under CSA Group supervision, evaluated the system’s capacity to limit thermal runaway propagation under simulated fire conditions.

The company stated that the Aqua-C2.5 is the first large-scale energy storage system to feature an active ventilation fire protection design.

Test simulates extreme thermal and spacing conditions

According to CLOU Electronics, the Aqua-C2.5 was tested using a configuration that replicated real-world station layouts.

Four 20-foot containers were positioned in an A/B A/D array, placed closely side-by-side and back-to-back at a spacing of 140 mm.

The arrangement was fully loaded to replicate operational stress.

During the trial, temperatures inside the cabinet exceeded 1000°C and burned continuously for 48 hours.

CLOU Electronics said adjacent cabinets maintained internal temperatures below 40°C due to the system’s active ventilation and off-gassing features.

CSA Group outlines limitations of previous standards

The TS-800 protocol was released in 2024 by the CSA Group to evaluate large-scale fire behaviour in energy storage systems.

Marvin Peng, Battery & Energy Storage Certifier at CSA Group, said: “The existing standards (such as UL 9540A) are capable of testing for thermal runaway, but they do not adequately simulate fire propagation scenarios, especially in multi-module container systems where a single battery fire can potentially ignite adjacent units or even the entire system.

“The core goal of the TS-800 test is to address this gap.”

CLOU highlights design features and certifications

Eric Wang, System Director of CLOU ESS Division, said: “CLOU committees that every product delivered is trustworthy and has undergone rigorous testing.

“The Aqua-C2.5 5MWh utility scaled energy storage system is the world’s first large-scale energy storage system to adopt an active ventilation fire protection design.

“Through active cell sensing, it triggers an electric shutter explosion suppression solution in thermal runaway scenarios, effectively controlling the spread of thermal runaway at extreme short distances in 140mm.”

The Aqua-C2.5, launched in September 2024, has received certifications including CE, UL1973, UL9540A, UL9540, IEC62619, IEC63056, IEC62477-1, UN38.3, NFPA855 and NEC.

It has also passed the IEEE693 seismic test.

Sungrow and other manufacturers also complete TS-800 testing

Other manufacturers have also conducted the TS-800 fire safety tests for their energy storage systems.

In 2024, Sungrow reported that its liquid-cooled system endured four hours of combustion in an A/B array without fire spreading to surrounding equipment.

Sungrow cited the use of pressure-sensing venting, multi-layer fire resistance and dual-compartment design in its PowerTitan system.

The company stated that its next-generation PowerTitan 2.0 product passed the large-scale test.

Trina Storage and BYD also reported completing the TS-800 fire test in October 2024 and January 2025 respectively.

CLOU Electronics reported in February 2025 that its Aqua-C2.5 system completed the CSA TS-800 fire test.

The test evaluated fire propagation and containment in high-density energy storage system layouts.

Adjacent cabinets remained below 40°C due to active ventilation and off-gassing.

CSA Group launched the TS-800 standard in 2024 to test fire behaviour in multi-module systems.

CLOU stated the Aqua-C2.5 is the first to use active ventilation fire protection.

The system includes electric shutter suppression and thermal detection features.

It holds multiple safety and compliance certifications including UL9540A and IEEE693.

Other manufacturers, including Sungrow, Trina Storage and BYD, also completed TS-800 testing.

Sungrow reported successful tests using its PowerTitan system and next-generation models.

He added: “With risks around extreme weather increasing, we need urgent and sustained investment in fire and rescue services. Without this, our ability to keep communities safe and protect homes and businesses is seriously undermined.”

Committee outlines current and projected climate risks for the UK

She stated: “We can see our country changing before our eyes.”

Brown said: “People are having to cope with more regular extreme weather impacts.”

She added: “People are experiencing increasing food prices.”

Brown concluded: “Ineffective and outdated ways of working within Government are holding back the country’s ability to be future-fit.”

According to Pinsent Masons, businesses using PFAS face a growing risk of litigation due to the limited scope of current UK regulations.

Hancock said: “We have already seen how PFAS litigation is growing in other parts of the world, with a ‘class action’ claim against Apple in the US perhaps the latest high-profile example in the area of popular consumer goods.”

Hancock also noted that the perception of weaker UK regulation could attract more legal challenges, regardless of compliance with domestic rules.

She cited a judicial review that was brought—though ultimately unsuccessful—against the Environment Agency’s handling of PFAS oversight as an example of mounting legal interest.

Firefighting foam ban signals regulatory movement

Current UK regulations place minimal restrictions on PFAS.

However, from July 2025, the use of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) in firefighting foams will be banned.

OHEAP Fire and Security stated that the change “will not affect many units at all as the chemical that is being banned hasn’t been used for more than 10 years.”

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is assessing additional restrictions on wide dispersive uses, including coatings and cleaning agents.

It is also examining consumer goods that may release PFAS into air, water or soil.

Agricultural sector highlighted as at-risk area for PFAS claims

According to Hancock, agriculture is another sector where PFAS litigation may emerge.

She said outdated laws governing the use of sewage sludge on farmland could expose suppliers to legal challenges.

“There is a risk that land owners could raise claims against sludge suppliers in relation to PFAS content in the sludge,” Hancock said.

She referenced examples from the US, where such claims have been pursued, and from Germany, where a compensation fund was set up in 1998 to address damage linked to agricultural use of sewage sludge.

Hancock said: “Industry in the UK would benefit from further guidance from government and regulators on this topic.”
