Reel Cinemas in Bahrain’s Marassi Mall has upgraded its fire safety measures by installing the Axis AX fire alarm system, developed by Advanced.

According to Advanced, the system was installed by Alpha Fire & Safety to ensure comprehensive fire safety for the cinema, covering areas such as the seven screens, IMAX theatre, VIP lounges, kitchen, waiting lobby, and other shared spaces.

The Axis AX system complies with UL 864 10th Edition standards and is designed to address the unique challenges of complex venues.

The project incorporated a 4-loop Axis AX panel, supported by devices including smoke detectors, heat detectors, sounders, manual call points, and duct detectors.

Additionally, the installation featured a voice evacuation system and an audio booster panel to ensure clear emergency communication throughout the site.

System integration with cinema infrastructure

One of the key features of the Axis AX system is its ability to integrate seamlessly with existing systems.

In this project, the fire safety system was connected to access control, fan control units, kitchen hoods, motorised smoke dampers, and FM200 gas control systems.

This integration allows for centralised safety management, improving operational efficiency and safety.

Alpha Fire & Safety highlighted the ease of adapting the Axis AX system to the cinema’s needs.

Saudi Arabia has seen significant development of fire safety technology during the last two years.

New trends are emerging, in particular, UL fire safety systems are gaining popularity.

Fire systems are needed to protect both large sites such as shopping centres, schools, universities and hospitals, as well as high-rise residential projects.

Advanced’s networked systems are the perfect fit for these challenges as they are fully scalable to suit virtually any application including ‘campus’ style and high-rise style configurations.

Evacuating safely

Another emerging trend in Saudi Arabia is that high-rise residential buildings require a fire alarm system with voice evacuation.

Axis AX’s voice evacuation can store 16 pre-recorded messages allowing the panel to operate autonomously to evacuate a building if the fire brigade isn’t present.

It offers simple three-channel audio (evacuate, alert, page) and complex multi-channel mass notification.

A message can be prioritised, vital if an evacuation strategy changes during an emergency.

If the fire brigade is present, Axis AX provides telephone communication channels which are integrated into the system with a telephone handset ensuring maximum safety.

The fire and emergency telephone system identifies the location of the field telephone users during emergencies and users can plug a telephone into an Axis AX fire panel to communicate the situation on a given floor speeding up evacuation.

But problems can occur with voice evacuation if the audio doesn’t sync and people hear multiple messages.

To solve this the Axis AX range features PerfectSync which ensures audio synchronisation even over large networks where it is possible to deliver a message from the first panel to the 200th with fast messaging to aid fast evacuation.

This clarity is ideal for tall residential buildings or large shopping centres or universities.

EN and UL

Saudi Arabia and the Middle East is a unique market where both UL and EN fire-safety solutions are used.

Wireless fire alarm systems are also an attractive solution for retrofitting, since buildings do not have to run cables.

A mobile children’s heart hospital in El Salvador has been equipped with a state-of-the-art wireless fire safety system by Advanced.

This initiative, reported by Advanced, aims to protect children undergoing heart surgery, their doctors, and staff.

The hospital, operated by Kinderherzen, ensures that children with serious heart conditions receive essential treatment.

Kinderherzen, based in Germany, sends doctors to provide critical care to young patients in regions with limited medical services.

Advanced, in collaboration with Crowcon, was tasked with developing a fire safety system that could be easily installed and reinstalled as the mobile hospital moved across Europe.

Installation details and system features

Advanced’s solution involved creating a bespoke wireless fire alarm system for ease and speed of setup.

At the core of the installation is an Axis EN single-loop panel, accompanied by a translator and 19 devices including point detectors, sounder-beacon bases, and call points, covering various rooms within the hospital.

The system was pre-programmed at Advanced’s headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and shipped to El Salvador for immediate installation.

The process was streamlined using special mounting plates for the control panel, translators, detectors, and sounders, reducing setup time to under half an hour.

Advanced fire safety system at Newham University Hospital boosts safety measures

Newham University Hospital in East London has upgraded its fire safety system with the installation of Advanced MxPro 5 panels.

The installation was carried out by M&G Fire Protection, involving comprehensive rewiring and the addition of multiple new panels.

The project required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the hospital’s round-the-clock operations were not disrupted.

In total, 97 nodes were installed, covering more than 10,000 devices.

The upgrade also considered future enhancements planned over the next three years, adhering to HTM0503 standards governing fire safety in healthcare premises.

Fire protection solutions manufacturer Advanced has installed an intelligent fire panel with wireless detection to protect a historic mansion house and estate in Scotland.

An Advanced MxPro 5 analogue addressable fire panel has been installed in Wedderlie House, providing comprehensive protection.

The system covers the entire house, which required Category L2 coverage due to its use as wedding accommodation.

Wedderlie House, located in the parish of Westruther, features a fortified tower from the late 16th century, with a larger house added in 1680.

The late 17th-century addition has rough-cast walls, expanding the building further with the Renaissance House.

Installation and technical details

Fire and security service providers Safe Services installed the Advanced MxPro 5 four-loop analogue addressable fire panel, incorporating 86 devices on the loop.

Due to the building’s age and construction, installing cabling without damaging the property was impossible.

Thus, the Advanced panel was integrated with EMS Firecell wireless devices.

Graeme Millar, Fire Technical Sales Engineer at Safe Services, said: “We were responsible for the installation, commissioning, verification and handover of the system, and will also be conducting ongoing maintenance.

“The age and construction of Wedderlie House could have been a real challenge but being able to integrate the Advanced panel with wireless EMS Firecell detection made it far more straightforward.

Keep Calm and Carry On: Discussing false fire alarms

False fire alarms can cost companies money in both operation and reputation, as well as putting lives at risk, explains Neil Parkin, Regional Sales Manager (North & Ireland) at Advanced

False fire alarms are a global problem. In the UK, false fire alarms cost more than £1 billion annually.

But the costs aren’t simply financial, repeated false alarms make people complacent, delaying reactions in real fire emergencies, putting lives and property at risk.

They also disrupt businesses and annoy customers.

Repeated false alarms can damage a company’s reputation and may also divert fire and rescue teams away from real emergencies.

With fire services under pressure this is a real problem.  Since 1 July 2023 Scottish Fire & Rescue has adopted a new ‘Call Challenge’ policy whereby it has stopped attending automatic fire alarm (AFA) call outs to commercial premises, such as factories, offices, shops and leisure facilities, unless a fire has been confirmed by the dutyholder.

(This change does not apply to sleeping premises, such as hospitals, care homes, hotels or domestic dwellings.)

This looks like a trend that will spread elsewhere and may extend even further as pressure on fire and rescue teams increases. 

For example, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service already challenges AFAs by a phone call if they are in lower-risk buildings – about a quarter of the automatic calls they receive are challenged in this way.

It is important to note that the service still sends a fire engine to all AFA notifications in high-risk, occupied buildings.

However, this March Berkshire is undergoing public consultation to change the way crews respond to AFAs as false alarms in the county account for 45% of all incidents, with 99.3% of AFA notifications requiring no action. 

Approach

Addressing this challenge requires a strategic approach.

Starting with a thorough fire risk assessment and precise fire system specification, false alarm management becomes a critical aspect.

Within the fire industry, two distinct strategies have emerged to tackle false alarms, both centred around signal verification.

The first approach leverages detector technology, effectively filtering out false signals at the detector level.

The second method involves analysing signals received at the fire panel, allowing for accurate determination of whether a fire event is genuine.

Forward-thinking manufacturers, such as Advanced, are now integrating these complementary approaches to effectively mitigate false alarms.

Fire Panels

The true power of a fire alarm system lies in combining detector data and an intelligent fire panel.

At its core, this integration enables individual detectors to collaborate in various modes, effectively mitigating false alarms.

For instance, multi-sensor detectors can be switched between heat and smoke modes to validate signals, and multiple detectors can be combined through double-knock or coincidence programming enhancing overall reliability.

Modern addressable panels are powerful computers dedicated to fire detection and can match detector signals with powerful cause-and-effect programming, reducing false alarms.

For example, AlarmCalm false alarm management is available as standard in the UK on Advanced’s MxPro 5 and Go fire panels, as well as it being available on both its Axis EN and Axis AX solutions internationally.

The built-in false alarm management combines versatile software detector technology and the optional AlarmCalm button to put an end to fire alarm frustration.

Using alarm verification and investigation delay technology, it allows additional time to respond, verify or investigate an alarm before the fire system goes into full alarm state.

Apartments

There are a number of causes that trigger false alarms and these differ depending on the building and its use.

For example, in apartment blocks false fire alarms can be caused by steam from showers, smoke from cooking, as well as call point misuse.

These triggers can lead to unnecessary evacuations making false alarms annoying for residents.

But if a fire panel features false alarm management, then a false alarm can be averted.

For instance, if someone creates cooking smoke in an apartment a verification sounder will activate.

If a fire alarm has a false alarm management button installed it then allows the occupant to press it to silence the sounder, extend the verification time and allow the smoke a chance to clear during verification.

If no other device activates and the smoke dissipates, the system will return to normal, avoiding unnecessary resident evacuation.

However, if the problem becomes more serious and smoke continues beyond the verification time the system will go into full alarm and evacuation procedures can begin.

Shopping Centres

Meanwhile, shopping centres and supermarkets are regularly forced to evacuate hundreds of shoppers due to false alarms.

Supermarkets are complex sites and may have offices, warehouses or storerooms, bakeries, staff rooms and toilets.

Each area presents its own unique fire risk which should be considered when designing a fire detection system.

Many areas can trigger false alarms in supermarkets, but one we come across regularly is the bakery.

When staff open an oven, heat and steam comes out. Unfortunately, if an optical or heat detector is installed, this triggers an alarm.

When the problem persists to avoid this, some supermarkets turn the fire system off or ignore LED alarms to avoid store evacuations, resulting in huge risk.

However, a fire panel that features false alarm management can solve this problem.

If smoke from an oven in a supermarket bakery activates a multi-sensor detector a verification countdown timer can be programmed to begin.

If the smoke clears and no heat is detected the system will return to normal avoiding an unnecessary shop evacuation.

Manufacturing

When it comes to manufacturing, downtime is the largest source of lost production reducing profits for companies as a result of lost business – false alarms are an unnecessary cause for production to stop.

In manufacturing plants where there are high temperatures, dust or chemicals in the air it is vital to consider where detectors are placed.

But it is also essential not to ignore detector signals.

As well as costing businesses money, repeated false alarms reduce people’s confidence in alarms making them complacent when it comes to evacuations.

Alarm fatigue can occur when a person becomes desensitised to an alarm due to repeated false alarms.

Here false alarm management can help since it is possible to set a verification time for when a device activation registers on a fire panel.

Then if no other detector is activated during the countdown, the system can automatically reset avoiding unnecessary evacuations and costly downtime.

Offices

Alternatively, in offices that are only occupied a few hours a day with multiple occupancy it is possible to opt for different false-alarm strategies.

This is easy to do since some false alarm management systems, like AlarmCalm, use their own unique ‘building areas’ for programming cause and effect, allowing the engineer to design individual false alarm management around specific risks on a site, rather than being restricted by the fire zones in place.

By dividing sites up into virtual false alarm ‘building areas’, independent of fire zones, users gain control of false alarm management and reduction strategies that exactly fit the needs of each part of a building.

Virtual building areas can cover multiple zones and points, partial zones or even single detectors.

This allows the programming of unique strategies targeting areas where there might be a risk of false alarms.

Businesses can now break free from the burden of recurrent false alarms, which not only harm their reputation but also carry financial implications.

IFSJ catches up with Advanced’s Middle East team to find out what the fire safety specialist has in store at Intersec 2024

In 2022, Advanced appointed Sasi Kumar as Commercial Manager for Middle East and Africa, to spearhead the company’s expansion in the Middle East, a key initiative of its comprehensive international sales strategy.

Kumar, a seasoned professional, transitioned to Advanced from FFE Ltd, a Halma group company at which he notably advanced the business’s beam and flame detector segment as the Head of Sales for the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions.

Following Kumar’s appointment, Advanced also welcomed two Business Development Managers to its Middle East operation: Sargunan Sellamuthu, Advanced’s second appointment to the region within a year, bringing nearly a decade of experience in the fire industry; and Hossam Badwy, previously a sales lead for a global systems manufacturer now operating out of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

As we look ahead to Intersec which returns this month, IFSJ caught up with Kumar, Sellamuthu and Badwy to find out more about Advanced’s offerings at the exhibition and discuss current trends in the GCC.

We’re delighted to be exhibiting at Intersec again and demonstrating how we can meet a variety of fire safety needs across a wide range of different sites and sectors.

It is an exciting time in the Middle East region with a high level of development, including the giga projects in Saudia Arabia.

Alongside this there is also an increase in safety regulation being rolled out which is improving fire safety in the region.

We are keen to show visitors at Intersec that we can provide proven, robust, fire safety solutions that they need.

Advanced is also thrilled to be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024 too, we are proud to have been a trusted UK manufacturer during this time providing high quality products.

Advanced is committed to the Middle East region and is increasing its presence for the long term.

We have already expanded our sales and support teams but are looking to further build on this.

We think it is vital to have a team based in the Middle East with local knowledge, that are here to speak directly to our customers.

That is why I joined in 2022, followed by Sargunan and Hossam this year, and we are looking to expand our team still further.

One current trend in the Middle East is the growth in wireless fire alarm technology with customers recognising its benefits including its robust performance.

This growth follows a similar trend in Europe where it is estimated the wireless fire alarm sector will increase by 10% from 2023 to 2032.

With wireless technology now tried and tested in Europe, the Middle East region is opting for wireless solutions too, especially following the development of the robust, reliable mesh technology.

Wireless fire alarm systems are now taking market share from wired variants.

Plus, last April, the Dubai Civil Defense announced that wireless technology could be used for both residential and commercial projects.

Other countries in the Middle East look set to follow.

As fire safety regulation tightens across the region, wireless fire alarm systems are becoming an attractive solution to retrofit, since buildings do not have to undergo the disruption of running cables which comes with installing a wired system.

Some wireless systems, such as Advanced’s Axis EN, also have the advantage of being able to integrate with existing fire alarm systems too when an upgrade is required, offering a hybrid system.

  UL-approved fire safety systems are gaining in popularity in the Middle East with our Axis AX fire system offering a solution that suits both large commercial sites and high-rise residential applications, as well as offering vital voice evacuation.

A growing awareness and implementation of fire-safety measures in the Middle East region is driving the popularity of UL fire safety systems.

When selecting a fire system, it is reassuring to know that it has the versatility to protect both large sites such as shopping centres, schools, universities and hospitals, as well as high-rise residential projects.
