U.S. honours military firefighting excellence through annual awards

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the winners of the 2024 Fire and Emergency Services Awards.

The Department recognised nine recipients across multiple categories, including fire departments, individual firefighters, officers and instructors, for their contributions to emergency response and mission support.

The awards were announced to coincide with International Firefighters’ Day.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, nominees were assessed from across military branches including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and the Defense Logistics Agency.

Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations and Environment, Robert E. Thompson, said: “Dedicated F&ES personnel sustain our defense communities through strategic planning, training, and incident response and recovery.”

Thompson added: “Their ability to continuously adapt to dynamic conditions better enables the military mission and helps safeguard the American people against catastrophic threats.”

Winning fire departments reported extensive training and emergency action

The U.S. Department of Defense stated that three fire departments were recognised for excellence in mission support and fire protection management.

Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia was named Small Fire Department of the Year. The department responded to a residential fire, rescuing three people and preserving $3 million in property value. It also hosted 130 sub-fire events and completed a confined space rescue on a submarine.

The Medium Fire Department of the Year was the 355th Civil Engineer Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. The department handled 788 emergencies, taught 43 classes with 2,500 awarded credits and contributed to a $152,000 charity initiative through Pima County Safety Day.

In the Large Department category, the 673d Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska was recognised for responding to a barracks fire and teaching 74 fire safety classes to over 1,200 people. The department also certified 63 Emergency Medical Technicians with a 100-percent pass rate.

Individual firefighters acknowledged for life-saving actions

The U.S. Department of Defense named one military and one civilian firefighter for their individual contributions to emergency response.

Senior Airman Adam Olea from Kunsan Air Base in the Republic of Korea was selected as Military Firefighter of the Year. According to the Department, Olea responded to a 1,300-acre wildfire, led a three-person fuel fire response team and supported coalition training for 111 firefighters.

Stevan Ames of Naval Station Mayport, Florida received Civilian Firefighter of the Year. Ames was the medical officer at a ship fire, treating responders and training National Guard personnel in tactical medical care. He also led EMT/paramedic recertification efforts, teaching 75 classes.

Awards highlight fire officer leadership and instructor achievements

Two fire officers and one instructor were recognised for leadership and training development.

Technical Sergeant Nathaniel Hobbs of Kunsan Air Base was named Military Fire Officer of the Year. He led 45 firefighters through 409 emergencies, coordinated a multi-agency response protocol, and managed multiple hazardous material incidents involving hydrazine.

Captain Takanori Saito of U.S. Army Garrison Japan was selected as Civilian Fire Officer of the Year. He led 44 emergency incidents with full response compliance and facilitated 83 training sessions. He also introduced interactive community demonstrations during fire prevention week.

Joseph Suddarth Jr. of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida received the Fire Service Instructor of the Year award. Suddarth led a wildfire response involving four agencies, redesigned EMT responder training and achieved a 95-percent pass rate with 171 certifications. Delta Fire wins national recognition for innovation and environmental achievement

Delta Fire has received two King’s Awards for Enterprise in recognition of its work in innovation and sustainable development, according to Delta Fire.

The Norwich-based company is one of only two businesses in the UK to receive two King’s Awards in 2025.

Delta Fire manufactures bespoke firefighting equipment and supplies products to over 100 countries and most UK fire and rescue services.

Sustainable manufacturing facility reaches net-zero energy status

Delta Fire reported that it achieved net-zero energy use at its Broadland Business Park facility in Norwich earlier this year.

The company opened the £5.5 million site in July 2023 and has begun building a further 975sqm extension costing over £1 million to support growth into international markets.

It explained that the facility is powered by 648 solar panels generating 260MWh of green energy annually, with heating and cooling provided by air source heat pumps.

Excess energy is stored in a 300kWh battery system, and surplus is returned to the grid. Rainwater is also collected and reused for ground maintenance.

The company stated that it is planning to install up to three helical wind turbines to support power generation through the remaining months of the year.

Equipment development focuses on new fire risks

Delta Fire said that its innovation has been guided by emerging fire risks such as those in high-rise buildings, wildfires and electric vehicles.

The company developed the Attack Pro nozzle, which features a stainless-steel turbine and a 180-degree spray pattern of fine droplets.

It also recently introduced the Hydro Wall hose, designed to help firefighters respond to wildfires, which it said are increasing in frequency due to climate change.

Delta Fire stated that its products are used in sectors including aviation, petrochemicals, renewable energy, defence and marine industries.

King’s Awards received during 35th anniversary year

Delta Fire Managing Director and Founder Ian Gardner said the awards come at a time when the company is marking several milestones.

Ian Gardner said: “We would have been absolutely delighted to achieve just one King’s Award, but to be recognised for two is just phenomenal.”

Ian Gardner continued: “It’s my fifth decade working in the fire industry and our 35th year in business in Norwich, so it couldn’t have come at a better time. It feels a wonderful recognition of what has been a lifetime of work.”

Ian Gardner added: “Delta Fire has grown beyond my wildest dreams, from just me, designing and building a few products in a small workshop, to a world class international business sustainably manufacturing state-of-the-art fire nozzles, all manufactured using advanced automated machines and robotics, which are all powered by solar energy.”

Ian Gardner also said: “These awards build on the strong foundations and accumulated efforts of many talented, skilled and hardworking Delta Fire team members, some of whom have been with Delta Fire for more than 25 years and many with over 15 years service. It is because of their hard work that we are honoured and recognised today.”

Ian Gardner concluded: “I want to thank our team, my family and all our customers for supporting us every step of the way.”

Delta Fire reported that its sustainability efforts also include planting 3,000 trees in Tanzania, which it said has offset over 450 tonnes of CO2.

Third-generation leadership supports award recognition

Delta Fire noted that Jordon King, part of the senior management team and grandson of Ian Gardner, was responsible for submitting the company’s application for several awards.

Jordon King said: “I joined the family business seven years ago after completing my degree at the University of Nottingham. I was struck by my grandfather’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development, which is the backbone of Delta Fire.”

Jordon King added: “It’s been a great privilege to join the Delta Fire team, who are the ones that have earned this double King’s Award. My hope and aim is to help continue this journey to make Delta Fire an outstanding sustainable world leader in fire suppression products.”

Aaron Johnson from Ridgway, Colorado, has been recognised for developing the Wildfire Ready Home certification programme.

The programme integrates data and guidance from insurance providers, local governments, and fire agencies to support homeowners in reducing wildfire risk.

Johnson also provides wildfire assessment training to homeowners’ associations and fire departments.

The Hawai’i Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO), operating across the state for 25 years, provided support after the August 2023 Lahaina fires.

In 2024, HWMO reached over 10,000 residents with workshops, assessments, campaigns, and projects.

Public sector wildfire mitigation efforts in Idaho and Florida

Tyre Holfeltz of the Idaho Department of Lands received the award for his work in helping counties update Community Wildfire Protection Plans and for developing vegetation management partnerships with utility companies.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has launched the 2025 edition of its Industry Awards, adding 10 new categories and updating the programme.

BESA has opened entries for the 28 categories and aims to increase participation by 25%, following a record 101 entries in 2024.
