Tell me about your role and background in the fire industry

I joined Apollo in 2019 but have been in the fire industry for well over 20 years, starting out as a Fire Systems Designer. Whilst I focus on supporting our partners in London and the Southeast as Regional Sales Manager, I also, along with the Apollo Sales and Technical Support team provide free online training every month with CPD accredited and product-based webinars, most recently we have been on a UK wide roadshow, presenting training on our new range, REACH Wireless.

Can you give me an overview of the services Apollo Fire provides?

Our purpose is simple; we make devices to keep people safe from fire every second of every day. We specialise in the design and manufacture of high-quality fire detection solutions that protect people from fire in over 100 countries around the world. We have recently launched our new hybrid-wireless range, REACH Wireless.

What is REACH Wireless and why was it developed?

Our new solution REACH Wireless is intended to provide a natural extension to our existing wired products and protocol, to provide the benefits of wireless where needed. REACH brings more modern product features such as dual-optical smoke detection and Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) and provides a platform to build upon going forward.

REACH was designed to target over-the-counter sales, meaning it had to be quick and easy to install without large amounts of training or special manufacturer’s accreditation. REACH’s installation is assisted by the built-in LCD screen of the Loop-Interface, which leads you through the process. We’re continuously listening to feedback from installations to refine the experience in pursuit of this goal and we’re confident that customers will be pleased with it at launch.

What are the benefits of hybrid-wireless fire alarm systems?

A hybrid-wireless fire alarm system can provide greater flexibility in situations where wiring may be difficult or impractical, for example, in listed buildings a wireless device would cause much less damage to the fabric of the building than a wired loop. It can reduce costs in some areas by connecting a new extension or outbuilding to an original installation with no cables. There are also applications where hybrid-wireless is valuable when short downtime is required such as educational facilities or retail stores.

What plans does Apollo Fire have for the future?

We recently launched a software update to the Apollo Test Set to support Apollo’s latest protocol, Core Protocol. Later this year we plan to publish the latest version of our Loop Calculator, which is free to download from our website. Impossible standards: Experts weigh in on the European Commission’s Construction Products Regulation Proposal

Earlier this year, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR) which was set to simplify rules for construction products on the EU market. The CPR was designed to lay down harmonised rules for the marketing of construction products in the EU, providing a common technical language to assess the performance of construction products.

It was created to ensure that reliable information is available to professionals, public authorities and consumers so they can compare the performance of products from different manufacturers in different countries.

Standards for individual fire safety products such as smoke detectors fall under the CPR and the performance characteristics of these products are to a large extent identical across all of Europe encouraging their free trade across the region. A system compatibility standard outlines which products belong to which system while the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of a fire safety system are largely achieved through national standards.

The produced standards focus on the overall function of the devices and ensure they are robust and have performance levels that are in alignment with national and/or regional regulations. This arrangement has been developed over many years and has met the needs of stakeholders across the continent. However, the application standards would be meaningless without robust product standards.

Association of European manufacturers, installers and service providers of the electronic Fire Safety and Security industry, Euralarm, said that the drafted CPR shows that it is not possible to solve the current issues easily as the legal boundaries remain unchanged. Harmonised standards remain legally controlled documents according to the Commission’s interpretation of the European Court of Justice ruling and the new CPR does not provide any means to resolve this.

The fire safety industry would have to re-write all product standards to align with what the European Commission is requesting and consequently the system standard and all the national application standards would have to be re-written, which Euralarm estimates would be an undertaking of at least 10 years. Euralarm has now issued an official position on the CPR proposal.

Euralarm’s position

Welcoming the proposal for the new CPR as the start of a journey towards a more sustainable and digital construction sector, Euralarm noted a number of positives. It welcomed the CE-marking remaining a part of the new CPR, calling it an important aspect of the harmonisation of the Single Market for construction products which has allowed companies to enjoy the free movement of these goods.

It also welcomed the increased focus on sustainability as most Europeans spend up to 90% of their time indoors and building are said to account for 40% of the energy consumption, Euralarm said it is easy to see why the construction products industry plays such an important role in the implementation of the circular economy package and environmental sustainability.

Other positives it noted were the use of digital tools for compliance procedures being extended, that the Commission is empowered to adopt delegated acts to avoid double assessment of products, and that, through the provision of delegated acts, particular product requirements will become mandatory under the new CPR.

While welcoming these aspects, Euralarm noted that it believes they need to be implemented in a practical and transparent way and, moreover, they highlighted a number of fundamental concerns with the proposal.

In particular, in the introduction and conclusion, Euralarm emphasised that the CPR proposal failed to address the core problem: “We note that the legal framework proposed is very flexible and, contrary to the consultation process, makes fundamental changes to the CPR. However, the times scale for the introduction of the new legislation, coupled with complexity of options and need for delegated acts to establish the details and consequences for our sector, fail to address the core issue which is that the EU standardization process has stagnated under the weight of the legal interpretations and obligations of the current CPR.”

Another key issue Euralarm highlighted was the complexity of the proposal: “We are not sure if we understand the big picture correctly – processes aren’t clear. The multiplication of using delegated act brings unnecessary complexity.”

It also raised concerns with combining the DoP (declaration of performance) with a DoC (Declaration of Conformity), noting that, contrary to the objectives of the proposal, does not result in the simplification that many stakeholders aspired to during the impact assessment.

Concluding its response, the position paper states that: “Euralarm welcome the publication of the Commission’s proposal for a new Regulation on construction products and believes that the suggestions and questions presented in this position paper would contribute to a clearer regulatory environment for the construction sector if the proposal goes ahead.

“However, Euralarm also observes that the core problem facing our sector is the stagnation of the standardisation process and have reservations that the processes and legislative complexities contained within Commission’s proposal for a new CPR will address this fundamental issue.”

The expert view: Peter Massingberd-Mundy

IFSJ asked Technology and Expert Practices Manager, Peter Massingberd-Mundy, to comment on the CPR and Euralarm’s position.

Why is the standardisation process stagnating?

To oversimplify the problem there are three key legal aspects to the challenges facing standard writers.

Firstly, we are repeatedly informed that the “James Elliott case” fundamentally changed the legislative standing of standards in Europe because the Judge concluded that any harmonised standard should be considered to be part of EU law.  One of the key reasons given was that “the Commission exercises significant control over the procedure for the drafting of harmonised technical standards by the CEN” (ref case C-613/14) . 

This court ruling (in January 2016) was in relation to whether it was necessary for a national court to refer to the European Court for an interpretation of a harmonised standard.  However, the ruling has had much wider implications such that it is becoming expected that any requirements in a harmonised standard must be agreed by all member states and recorded in a standardisation request BEFORE the standard can be written.  This calls to mind the common conundrum: Which comes first? – the hEN or the regg? … is it actually possible to agree “requirements” when the test methods have not been defined?

The second aspect is that the Construction Products Regulations are fundamentally different from other Directives under the New Legislative Framework in that hENs cited under the CPR become a mandatory requirement – the expectation being that they should express how the performance of (the “essential characteristics” of) a product is to be expressed – the logic being member states should establish any performance requirements unless those requirements have been defined in the Standardisation Request. 

Other legislation (such as EMC and LVD) take an opposite approach; they lightly define the essential requirements within the regulation/directive (e.g. the product must be “safe”) and the hENs are prepared to provide a standardised and more detailed way to demonstrate that the essential requirements have been met.  In fact, a product that is in line with the appropriate hEN is conferred with a “presumption of conformity” to the legislation. 

The third aspect is that the European Commission took the opportunity to update the original Construction Product Directive (CPD) and turn it into a Regulation – thus enacting it as law in all member states.  One fundamental change that was slipped in during this update (possibly in anticipation to the impending ruling of the James Eliot case) was Article 17 clause 5 which states that “The Commission shall assess the conformity of harmonised standards established by the European standardisation bodies with the relevant mandates.”  These mandates are essentially the original, light touch, standardisation requests prepared under the CPD. 

These legal aspects (and several others, some relating to exhaustiveness) have stagnated the preparation and citation of hENs under the CPR.  For TC72, 6 candidate hENs prepared in the early 2010s remain uncited despite them being technically sound and adopted by several countries.  Moreover, the existing cited standards (such as EN54-11 for fire alarm call points) cannot be updated because, if TC72 opts to do so. any new revision will not be cited by the European Commission, so the market ends up with TWO current versions – the latest one and the legally adopted one. 

What changes in the revised CPR is the European Commission proposing?

It took our team of experts several long meetings and many hours of reading to try and de-cypher the changes proposed by the Commission, but they amount to introducing more powers for the Commission; increasing the use of Delegated Acts to provide the details and legal control by which the standards for each sector within the Construction Industry are realised.  Instead of taking the opportunity to reduce the legal complexity and simplify the CPR, the proposal introduces more options – which, while welcome, requires detailed secondary legislation (in the form of a Delegated Act or Standardisation request) before a harmonised standard can be written.  The timescales for this are eyewatering – extending to 2045.  For example, Fire alarms are 11th priority under the CPR Acquis and work will not start on drafting new Standardisation requests for the EN 54 series before 2024.

This is in stark contrast to the request made in the EU parliament on 21st March 2021 that the Commission find a quick and viable solution to the backlog in standardisation.

However, this same parliamentary debate also called on the Commission; to explore the possibility of including additional obligations with respect to health, safety and environmental aspects, to harness the full power of digital technologies and to assess how the CPR could enhance circularity.  These aspects are addressed in the Proposal but exacerbate the main problem of stagnation.

Why is this unfeasible for the fire safety industry?

As outlined above TC72 has 6 candidate hENs stuck in the pipeline and several that need revising.  For example, many cited standards refer to an old revision of the EMC immunity standard EN 50130-4.  This leads to double testing as manufacturers are obliged to get their products tested by a notified body to the revision harmonised under the CPR but also have to arrange testing to the latest version to satisfy the EMC directive (and several significant “quality marks” which continue to be a prerequisite for successful sales in certain markets).

A more specific example is EN 54-3, for sounders, which was revised in 2014 to include a number of important updates.  Unfortunately, despite a formal amendment in 2019 (and proposals for a further amendment to address specific objections to its citation) the harmonised revision remains at the 2006 amendment. This situation is confusing and frustrating for the market and particularly for the Notified Bodies as they are unable to apply the clarifications and improvements of the 2014 revision.

In short – standards should not be set in legal concrete and need to remain reasonably dynamic – 10+ years between revisions is not appropriate.

What is Euralarm’s positions on the latest proposal?

As a trade association, Euralarm has many members and establishing a strong consensual position is challenging – particularly in complex matters.  Thus, while emphasising that the Proposal does not address the core problem of stagnated standardisation the position paper also looks to provide some practical observations on the proposal and how it might be improved – if the Parliament opts to pursue ever more complex EU regulation of standards.

What alternative approach does Euralarm suggest?

Unpicking the legal gordian knot that is being tied around standards is a huge challenge but, within a small group of experts, Euralarm has identified and is exploring three possible approaches. 

The first is to follow the path mapped out by the Commission and work towards adopting all the current expectation of our FD&A devices as legal requirements.  Several parties see this as the safest way of proceeding, but others fear it will stifle innovation and be a barrier to introducing safer products and systems. 

The second approach is to retain the current performance expectations of FD&A devices within the hENs and, while it would be a legal requirement to declare the performances of each characteristic the standards would facilitate an option not to meet normal performance expectations.  This idea has been pursued by CEN TC72 and is referred to as the “open descriptions” approach.  Several parties are concerned that this approach is not possible/permitted/supported by the Commission/legislation while others see it as an effective way to retain current performance expectations without establishing each and every one as a legal requirement.

The third idea is to take a systems approach and only set down legal requirements on the system performance, not on individual components.   As such the basic requirements for detection, manual initiation, response times, transmission path monitoring and the alarm output (sound/light) would be established in a new simplified hEN.  It is anticipated that the current EN 54 series would be retained as voluntary standards, for reference by installations codes and to support Quality marks.  Some parties fear that subsidiarity principles may be contrary to this approach, particularly for member states when the installation codes rely on the legal conformity bestowed by the EN 54 standards being harmonised.  Others are concerned that the non-harmonised status of the EN 54 series may not be possible but if is then the advantages of minimising the categoric legal restrictions on products makes this an attractive solution.

What, if any, are the next steps?

Euralarm continues to flesh out the details of these three approaches and though discussion with its members and with colleagues in CEN, the Commission, member states and national associations will pursue the most appropriate.

Growth ahead for flame detection market

The global flame detector market size is expected to grow from USD 1.7 billion in 2022 to USD 2.1 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 5.0% during the forecasted period according to a new report.

The implementation of fire protection systems generally involves high initial investment due to the complex nature of networks and the high quality of equipment required for emergency management which will impact market growth.

Additionally, manufacturers will also invest for research and product development to offer innovative technology and most reliable fire protection systems.

The bounce back of commercial real estate has accelerated the shift from offline, in-store retail to online, e-commerce logistics, driving the demand for warehouse- and logistics-focused properties.

As the industrial real estate grows the opportunity for building and fire safety systems is likely to rise as this industry has a higher focus on building, asset, and personnel safety. The rising demand and growth in commercial real estate is will pose a key growth opportunity for the flame detector market.#

The introduction of new equipment and the transition to alternative fuels bring challenges and opportunities for optical flame detection. Many natural gas distribution companies are exploring the possibility of introducing hydrogen into gas streams. Although the transition to a non-carbon-based gas network is distant, the shift toward the goal has started.

Europe is expected to have the second largest market share during the forecast period and the technology adoption in the flame detector market is the highest in the European region.

Europe CPR proposal: ‘fire safety industry has to re-write all product standards’ says Euralarm

Members of the Euralarm Fire Section have expressed concern over the European Commission’s CPR (Construction Products Regulation) proposal which it says ‘fails to address the market needs’ and ‘does not address the main challenge facing standardisation’.

Although Euralarm said it welcomed the publication of the proposal for a new CPR and the recent Q&A session which provided an opportunity to clarify the understanding, members were disappointed that the proposal fails to address the urgent need to resolve the ongoing stagnation of the standardisation process.

Euralarm explained that standards for individual fire safety products such as smoke detectors fall under the CPR and so the performance characteristics of these products are, to a large extent, identical across all of Europe.

Euralarm said in its statement: “The drafted CPR shows that it is not possible to solve the current issues easily as the legal boundaries haven’t changed. Harmonised standards remain legally controlled documents according to the Commission’s interpretation of the European Court of Justice ruling and the new CPR does not provide any means to solve this.

“It would mean that the fire safety industry has to re-write all product standards to align with what the European Commission is requesting. Consequently, the system standard and all the national application standards would have to be re-written.

“We estimate the time span for such an undertaking to be at best 10 years. This would not be an effective use of resources and would certainly be met with significant resistance because of the unnecessary confusion and inconsistencies of such a transition.

“Assertions that the changes proposed amount to a simplification and should reduce costs and timescales for publishing standards are therefore unsubstantiated.  Euralarm members anticipate increased costs, complexity and timescales.”

Call for property owners to ensure smoke alarms are working in New South Wales homes

New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke has called on residents, landlords and tenants across the state of New South Wales to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home as the death toll from house fires this winter is now more than double last year.

Cooke said that the risk of death in a house fire is significantly reduced if working smoke alarms are installed. “Since the start of June we’ve lost nine people in house fires across the State, which is more than double the entire 2021 winter death toll of four,” she said.

“Fire can engulf a home in a matter of minutes and while smoke won’t wake you up, a smoke alarm will, which could be the difference between life and death.”

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Acting Deputy Commissioner Trent Curtin said it is the responsibility of landlords to ensure there are working smoke alarms in rental properties: “It’s the law for all properties to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on every level of the home.

“Landlords are responsible for the installation of smoke alarms in rented premises. After the tenancy begins, the tenant is responsible for replacing the battery, if needed, in battery-operated smoke alarms. Landlords must replace the batteries in a hard-wired smoke alarm.

“And if you live in a rental property, I urge you to test your smoke alarm and make sure it’s in good working order. If there’s no smoke alarm or it’s faulty, contact your landlord immediately. It may just save your life and that of your loved ones.”

Since 1 June, FRNSW has attended 373 house fires across NSW. Of these, 44 per cent did not have working smoke alarms, while a further 20 per cent did not a have smoke alarm installed.

Bill to put smoke detectors in all federal assisted housing introduced

A delegation of federal legislators from the Philadelphia area have introduced a bill that would require the installation of hardwired or tamper-resistant smoke detectors in all federal assisted housing units. The measure was pulled into focus following a rowhouse fire that claimed the lives of 12 people in January which claimed the lives of three adults and nine children.

US Rep. Madeleine Dean, who represents Pennsylvania’s Fourth Congressional District, announced that she had introduced the Public and Federally Assisted Housing Fire Safety Act. Senator Bob Casey, a fellow Pennsylvania Democrat, is behind similar companion legislation in the US Senate.

“The fire in Fairmount was heart-breaking, and the community continues to mourn the sudden loss of 12 family members, including so many precious children,” Dean said in a statement. “Let me be clear — we can never repeat the fire tragedies that we saw in Philadelphia or New York. We must implement critical safeguards that will protect the millions of families that live in public and federally assisted housing.”

According to Dean, more than 10 million Americans live in public or federally assisted housing, and she claims that this bipartisan legislation would protect those residents from the serious risks of fire.

“This extremely important legislation will require the installation of either tamper resistant or hardwired smoke alarms in federally assisted housing,” Jim Narva, NASFM executive director, said in a statement. “We look forward to working with Representative Madeleine Dean and her colleagues to enact this bill into law which will prevent future tragedies along with saving countless lives.”

National Low Income Housing Coalition President and CEO Diane Yentel said: “While robust federal resources such as those included in the House-passed Build Back Better Act are needed to repair and preserve public housing for future generations, improving the quality of smoke detectors in all federally assisted housing is a simple, common-sense step in the right direction that will save lives.”

Investigators in the fire at the Fairmount section of Philadelphia uncovered that the fire had occurred in a public housing unit that contained only one working smoke alarm. Of the seven total smoke alarms that had been located inside the premises, four were located inside drawers, one was on the floor with no batteries, one was on the ceiling without batteries and the final alarm was working but located in the basement, according to Dean’s office.

Wireless fire detection installed at Tyneside apartment block

A residential development close to the Tyne Bridge is now protected by over 600 cutting-edge wireless devices from Hyfire following a comprehensive overhaul of the fire system. The new fire system installed at Curzon Place by RayFire Services Ltd marks the first complete overhaul in the building’s industry, bringing it fully into line with the latest UK fire regulations and best practice.  

Ray Hope, Managing Director at RayFire Services, commented: “This was largest, smoothest install we have carried out to date, largely thanks to the simplicity of setting up and installing the Hyfire Taurus wireless devices, which made the whole process from survey through to commissioning completely seamless. For an apartment complex with residents in situ, you really couldn’t ask for more. 

“Working with the Hyfire team, we specified a full communal Level 1 system, incorporating heat detection and sounders within each apartment lobby and additional heat detection in sensitive areas. We were able to reduce wiring by up to 90%, with a radically reduced installation schedule and minimal disruption for residents.” 

Hyfire offers a range of commercial standard wireless fire devices on the market, ranging from optical, multi-criteria and heat detectors to notification, alarm, interface and control units, all fully certified to EN54. All products offer the highest performance and quality in the industry, and are also fully compliant with BS5839 Part 1. Fire panels are wired via a loop to translators, from which wireless devices can be used on their own to build fully wireless systems of virtually any size, or mixed with Hyfire wired products to provide seamless hybrid solutions, offering total flexibility to specifiers and installers.  

Robert Bruce, Hyfire National Sales Manager – North, said: “This is one of our first projects with RayFire Services, and it was great to work on such a landmark building. The Taurus range, combined with an Advanced MxPro panel, offers all of the capabilities of its wired equivalents, with the added benefits of simplicity and ease of installation, which is a major advantage for both building occupiers and the end client. With more and more fire system upgrades taking place outside of the usual maintenance schedule, the ability to limit the impact on the structure is also very welcome.”  

Developed in Trieste, Italy, the global centre for wireless fire design, Taurus features Pathfinder Technology, which allows the devices to communicate over up to a kilometre, point to point in open air, and further where expansion hops are used. Antenna technology has been optimised to allow communication across different frequencies and environments, which means that Taurus can do the job with less equipment and less batteries, thus saving on costs.  

Colin Wrightson, Director at Securetech Systems NE Ltd, lead contractor for the end client on the project, commented: “We had a clear brief to deliver this project as rapidly as possible, with minimal intrusion and inconvenience, so Hyfire wireless devices were the obvious choice. The installation was completed ahead of schedule, the system is working as specified and the residents are very happy with the outcome. You can’t really ask for more.”  

Hochiki fire detection system installed at Verona hospital

After extensive assessments and a rigorous qualifying stage by the Hospital technical team and Amperia srl, the installation company, Hochiki fire detection systems and equipment was selected to update the fire detection system at the IRCCS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria Hospital in Negrar, Verona.

Following consultation, 26 fire detection panels, including Syncro and Hochiki’s Latitude system, and two Vision remote panels were installed in the hospital, all of which were networked.

The project brief stated that it was important the systems and any devices used must be installed with minimum impact on the day to day running of the hospital. Hochiki ESP range was recommended because these devices have been specifically designed to be quick and easy to install, ensuring minimal disruption was achieved by the team at Amperia srl.

Another priority for the project was that any fire detection system needed to be able to alert every person in the building to an emergency, including visually and hearing-impaired visitors. Hochiki’s range of VADs (visual alarm devices) were used to provide a visual indication of an alarm condition to those people who would not normally be alerted to a fire by standard audible-only devices such as sounders and bells.

The final key priority was the ability for the entire system to be continuously monitoring 24 hours a day. During the consultation period between the installers and Hochiki, the fire detection system was designed to provide 24/7 monitoring. This was thanks to the I/O modules and technological fault alarm signals which were also implemented and connected to the fire control panel loop. These were then monitored by the personnel 24 hours a day thanks to two supervision systems, one for the fire detection system and one for the technological alarms.

This project at the IRCCS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria Hospital was one of the largest and most complex projects that Hochiki have ever been involved in Italy involving the installation of multiple detectors, Detectors, 10 fire extinguishing systems, 14 gas detection panels and 10 aspirating panels.

Davide Montoli, Product Manager at Hochiki Italia, explained: “An interesting aspect of our systems is the “Bridge” communication between different generations of fire alarm control panels. In the case of this Hospital, the possibility of connecting the new L@titude control panels to the existing network of Syncro control panels made it possible to expand the system even though many years had passed since the installation of the original control panel. In fact, Hochiki’s L@titude platform can adapt its communication protocol to ensure backward compatibility with previous generation control panels”

Loris Fornaser, Technical Manager at the installer company Amperia srl, commented: “As you can imagine the fire safety standards of this project were extremely high due to the complex environment in which a hospital operates. This led us to choose a technologically advanced life safety product that would guarantee the client excellent performance and long-term reliability. The manufacturer’s technical support was always precise and Hochiki proved to be the ideal solution”

Euralarm updates study on False Fire Alarms in Europe

Euralarm’s Task Group False Alarms has released a second edition of the study on false fire alarms in Europe. The new edition has been enhanced by the analysis of the situation in Denmark. In addition, the measures to reduce the amount of false alarms have been updated and newer content has been added.

The Euralarm study focuses on the statistical data of fire alarms and the methodology in the collection and evaluation. Anyone studying the data of the different countries that participate in the study, comes to the same conclusion: that there is no unified approach.

This revised and expanded publication of the study is designed to be the basis to help guide the industry and its stakeholders towards a more uniform approach across Europe, by working together with the European standardisation Technical Committee 72 to implement a common technical language.

It also contains measures for the reduction of false alarms in terms of products, planning, organisation, and maintenance.

National Fire Protection Association announced theme for Fire Prevention Week

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week which takes place on 9-15 October. The initiative is designed to reinforce the critical importance of developing a home escape plan with all members of the household and practicing it regularly.

According to NFPA data, home is where people are at greatest risk, with three-quarters (74 percent) of all US fire deaths occurring in homes. When a home fire does occur, it’s more likely to be serious; people are more likely to die in a home fire today than they were in 1980.

“Today’s homes burn faster and hotter than they used to, minimizing the amount of time they have to escape safely,” aid Lorraine Carli, vice president of the NFPA Outreach and Advocacy division. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as two minutes to get out from the time the smoke alarms sounds.”

The Fire Prevention Week 2022 theme, “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape,” promotes messages that the NFPA said could mean the difference between life and death in a fire. Developing a home escape plan with all members of the household and practicing it regularly ensures that everyone knows what to do when the smoke alarm sounds and uses that time wisely.

Following are key messages behind this year’s “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape” theme:

  • Make sure your home escape plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
  • Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
  • Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

As the biggest annual campaign at NFPA, Fire Prevention Week works to educate people about the leading risks to home fires and ways they can better protect themselves and their loved ones. Local fire departments are invited to play a key role in bringing Fire Prevention Week to life in their communities each year and spreading basic but critical fire safety messages.
