According to a March 2 security advisory issued by global risk consultancy MAX Security, hostilities across the Middle East have broadened following U.S.–Israel strikes on Iran, with Hezbollah and Iran-backed Iraqi militias entering the conflict between March 1–2.

The update reports continued Iranian missile and UAV attacks targeting Gulf states, identifying Bahrain, the UAE and Kuwait as among the most heavily affected.

UAE air defence interceptions and reported casualties

The UAE Ministry of Defence said the country’s air defence forces detected 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles and 541 drones since the start of the Iranian attacks on February 28.

It reported that 152 ballistic missiles and 506 drones were intercepted, while other munitions were destroyed or fell into the sea or within UAE territory, causing material damage, according to the Bahrain News Agency.

The Ministry also reported three fatalities and 58 minor injuries linked to the attacks and their effects, as carried by the Qatar News Agency. Casualty reporting was also covered by TIME.

Dubai: hotel and landmark sites affected

Dubai International Airport (DXB): Reuters reported that a concourse sustained minor damage in an incident that was “quickly contained,” and that four people were injured, citing statements carried by Dubai’s media office.

Burj Al Arab: Reuters also reported damage at the landmark hotel. Additional reporting from Al Jazeera and coverage from The New York Times described incidents in Dubai linked to debris from intercepted drones or missiles, including a minor façade fire that was brought under control.

Fairmont The Palm (Palm Jumeirah): A fire near the entrance/lower levels of the hotel during the attacks was reported by BBC News, with additional video coverage from The Guardian. Authorities said the blaze was brought under control and injuries were reported.

Jebel Ali Port: berth fire and operational disruption

A fire broke out at a berth at Jebel Ali Port after debris from an intercepted projectile fell at the site, according to imagery and reporting from Reuters. Broader disruption to Gulf transport and business operations was further detailed by Reuters and covered by BBC News.

Regional aviation disruptions

Air travel across the Middle East remained affected as the conflict moved into its third day, with airlines urging passengers to check flight status amid shifting airspace restrictions, according to Euronews. Broader logistics and business impacts across the Gulf were also reported by Reuters.

Saudi Arabia: Ras Tanura refinery incident

On March 2, Reuters reported that Saudi Aramco shut its Ras Tanura refinery (550,000 barrels per day capacity) after a drone strike, citing an industry source.

The report stated that the incident caused a small fire, with no reported injuries, and that operations were halted as a precaution while damage was assessed.

Iran seeks aid for UNESCO forests

Iran has asked foreign governments to help contain a large wildfire in the Hyrcanian forests in northern Iran, after flames reignited in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed area in mid November.

Local media reported on Saturday 22 November 2025 that the fire has burned through the ancient forests for several days.

The blaze first broke out in early November, was temporarily brought under control and then reignited on 15 November, according to the official IRNA news agency.

The Hyrcanian forests run for around 1,000 kilometres along the Caspian Sea coast in Iran and into neighbouring Azerbaijan.

Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah, Deputy to Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, wrote on X that Iran had requested urgent assistance from friendly countries because domestic efforts could not keep the fire under control.

Hyrcanian forests and drought conditions

UNESCO recognised the Hyrcanian forests as a World Heritage Site in 2019.

The area is described as being between 25 and 50 million years old and containing more than 3,200 plant species.

UNESCO states that the forests include many rare and endemic tree species as well as relic and endangered plants.

The country is experiencing one of its most severe droughts in around six decades, according to the report.

Hossein Ali Mohammadi, Director General of crisis management for Mazandaran province, described the operation to extinguish the fire as “one of the most complex in recent years.”

Aerial firefighting support from Turkiye

Shina Ansari, Head of the Iranian Environmental Protection Organization, said two specialised water bomber aircraft, a helicopter and eight personnel will be dispatched from Turkiye.

Ansari explained on state television that Iran may also seek assistance from Russia if additional support is required.

The fire is affecting rocky terrain in the Elit area of Mazandaran province in northern Iran, where Tasnim news agency reported that hunters allegedly started the blaze.

AP News has reported that a port explosion at Shahid Rajaei port in southern Iran on Saturday killed 25 people and injured around 800 others.

The explosion was linked to containers believed to hold chemical materials, according to Iranian state media.

Authorities reported that helicopters and aircraft worked through Saturday night and Sunday morning to extinguish the fire.

The explosion occurred as Iran and the United States were meeting in Oman for a third round of negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

No Iranian officials directly attributed the explosion to an attack, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated: “Our security services are on high alert given past instances of attempted sabotage and assassination operations designed to provoke a legitimate response.”

Concerns over chemical shipments and missile fuel at the port

According to private security firm Ambrey, the Shahid Rajaei port received a shipment of ammonium perchlorate from China in March.

Ambrey said: “The fire was reportedly the result of improper handling of a shipment of solid fuel intended for use in Iranian ballistic missiles.”

Iranian defence ministry spokesman Gen. Reza Talaeinik denied these reports, telling state television: “No sort of imported and exporting consignment for fuel or military application was (or) is in the site of the port.”

Ambrey attributed the chemical to missile production, referencing previous reports by the Financial Times.

Ship-tracking data reviewed by The Associated Press showed one of the vessels linked to the chemical shipment near the port in March.

Iran has not confirmed receipt of the ammonium perchlorate.

AP News reported that Shahid Rajaei port had previously been the target of a cyberattack attributed to Israel in 2020.

The Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

A recent study, by Sayahnia, R., Ommi, S., Khoshnamvand, H. et al., examines the impact of wildfires on the biodiversity of Iran’s Zagros oak forests.

This region, known for its rich biodiversity, faces frequent threats from wildfires.

The study utilizes space–time scan statistics permutation (STSSP) model and remote-sensing MODIS data to analyze fire patterns and their effects on vertebrate species from 2000 to 2021.

The findings reveal an annual fire rate of 76.2 occurrences per year in the Zagros forests.

The northwest and a part of the southern Zagros show the highest fire rates, with clusters of fires indicating a wide spatial distribution.

Notably, these fire-prone areas also possess the richest species diversity and highest habitat value.

The study highlights a significant correlation between habitat value and the extent of burned areas, emphasizing the need for targeted fire protection efforts.

Impact of fires on vertebrate diversity

The research highlights that regions with the highest fire rates also house a diverse range of vertebrate species, including many endemic to the area.

Small vertebrates, such as amphibians and reptiles, are particularly affected by wildfires.

While some studies suggest that these species can find shelter during fires, the long-term impact on their populations is concerning.

Bird species, including endangered birds of prey like the Egyptian vulture and the saker falcon, also face threats from fires.

Interestingly, some bird species benefit from the changing habitat conditions post-fire, showing increased richness patterns.

However, for mammals, especially small ones like the Persian squirrel, the fires can lead to habitat loss and population decline.

Larger mammals are better equipped to escape fire-affected areas, but their smaller counterparts remain vulnerable.

Strategic planning for fire protection

The study shows that 76% of the total burned area occurred in habitats classified as high value.

Firefighting in Iran: A Historical Perspective and Current Trends

Historical narratives detail how the Persian Empire, under the rule of King Khashayarshah, initiated a military unit for firefighting during its attack on ancient Greece. If these accounts hold true, it would be the first organised fire department in recorded history.

Today, Iran, as the world’s 17th largest country, garners global attention primarily for nuclear diplomacy. Yet, the nation’s rich history spans several millennia and includes the evolution of knowledge, courageous acts, and exquisite craftsmanship.

Historical Fires in Iran

As one delves into the profound history of Iran, a recurring narrative emerges of fire shaping the civilisation’s trajectory, from the prehistoric city of Shahr-e Sukhteh to the grandeur of Persepolis and, more recently, the Plasco Building fire. Each incident, while tragic in its immediate aftermath, has contributed to Iran’s rich cultural tapestry and provides an important lens through which we can understand the resilience and evolution of its people.

Located in what is now the Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran, Shahr-e Sukhteh, or “The Burnt City,” was an ancient urban centre that thrived from 3200 to 2100 BC. It was one of the world’s largest cities at the time, showcasing a complex irrigation system, sophisticated architecture, and a wealth of cultural artifacts.

Tragically, repeated fire incidents resulted in the city’s repeated destruction and rebuilding. Today, the city’s remnants, including what are believed to be the world’s oldest animated picture and possibly an artificial eyeball, are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The resilience of Shahr-e Sukhteh’s inhabitants, who rebuilt their city multiple times, paints a vivid picture of human tenacity in the face of adversity.

On the other hand, the fire in Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, represents an instance where fire was wielded as a weapon of war. Allegedly set ablaze by Alexander the Great’s army in 330 BC, the fire left an indelible mark on the annals of Persian history. Although the account of this event is disputed among historians, the ruins show unequivocal signs of fire damage.

This destructive event led to the loss of innumerable works of art, architecture, and cultural artifacts, representing a significant cultural tragedy. Yet, despite the substantial damage, the remnants of Persepolis stand as a testament to the grandeur of the Achaemenid Empire and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Fast forward to the 21st century, the Plasco Building fire in 2017 serves as a grim reminder of the threats modern structures face from fire. Once one of Iran’s oldest high-rise buildings, the 17-story Plasco Building in Tehran succumbed to a massive fire, causing it to collapse and tragically resulting in the death of 16 firefighters and six civilians. This incident, considered one of Iran’s worst fire disasters, has prompted a reassessment of safety measures in contemporary Iranian architecture.

The narrative of fire in Iran’s history, as seen in Shahr-e Sukhteh, Persepolis, and the Plasco Building, is a story of creation, destruction, and rebirth. Fire, in its destructive capacity, has undeniably played a transformative role in shaping Iran’s architectural, cultural, and historical landscape. The resilience displayed in rebuilding and learning from these incidents, however, demonstrates a spirit of endurance that has allowed Iranian society to continually evolve and adapt in the face of adversity. This dialectic between destruction and resilience forms an essential part of Iran’s unique cultural and historical identity.

The Emergence of the Fire Department in Iran

The inception of organised firefighting services in Iran can be traced back to the mid-19th century, initiated under Russian influence. The development of this life-saving public service, like the narrative of the country itself, weaves a compelling tale of adaptation and progress.

Approximately 165 years ago, the first fire station in Iran was established in the city of Tabriz, spurred by Russian officers. The station was initially equipped with basic firefighting equipment—two-way manual pumps made of bronze and copper—designed to extinguish fires rather than respond to other types of emergencies. This marked the genesis of the fire service in Iran, where firefighting strategies largely depended on manual labor and simple technological interventions.

In 1917, the Tabriz fire station saw a significant upgrade under the city’s mayor, who erected the Yanghin tower to aid fire detection across the city. This tower, now a standing monument, continues to be a part of Fire Station Number 1 in the Tabriz Fire Department, symbolising the evolution of Iran’s fire safety services.

The capital city of Tehran, however, lagged slightly in establishing its firefighting service. It wasn’t until 1924 that Tehran saw the establishment of its first fire station, located in a modest garage in the city’s central part. A significant fire in 1928 at the industrial cinema on Lalezar street, however, served as a wakeup call. This fire, which razed the city’s most modern cinema, resulted in an urgent need for a robust fire service. Consequently, the Iranian parliament enacted legislation obliging the municipality to equip and develop the fire department, catalysing the development of the Tehran Fire Department (TFD).

As of today, the TFD is the most extensive fire department in Iran, boasting 134 fire stations and more than 5300 firefighters. The evolution of the TFD from a single station in a garage to a vast network of stations manned by thousands of professionals reflects Iran’s commitment to public safety.

The story of Iran’s fire department is one of continuous growth and progress, spurred by changing needs and evolving technology. It is a testament to the country’s resilience and commitment to protecting its people and preserving its heritage from the destructive force of fire. This evolution continues today, as Iran faces new challenges in fire safety management in the context of modern structures, industries, and an ever-growing urban population.

Training Practices within the Tehran Fire Department

The role of a firefighter is demanding and fraught with potential dangers, making effective training an essential part of a fire department’s functioning. In this respect, the Tehran Fire Department (TFD), Iran’s largest firefighting service, sets a compelling example with its rigorous and comprehensive training programs.

An integral part of the TFD’s operations, training is structured to ensure that all firefighters are well-equipped to handle any emergency. This involves semi-annual fitness examinations, where firefighters must demonstrate their physical readiness and improved professional skills. “Training time” is allocated during each work shift, emphasising the ongoing nature of firefighter training and the continuous improvement of skills.

The vast size of the TFD has necessitated a well-organised training management system, dividing the department into eight regions. Each region manages its training programs, with the organisation’s vice president of training and education overseeing the entire operation, ensuring a uniform and high standard of training across the department.

The TFD’s mandatory training program is comprehensive, preparing firefighters for a wide array of situations. Newly hired personnel and junior firefighters undergo rigorous instruction in numerous areas, including personal protective equipment usage, fire behavior and related techniques, fire pump operations, ladder operations, rope rescue, technical rescue operations, and basic principles of fire prevention, among others. The training also involves learning how to handle high-risk scenarios such as confined space operations, dealing with hazardous materials, and responding to road traffic collisions.

The TFD’s training isn’t confined only to its personnel. Recognising the importance of fostering a culture of safety and emergency readiness within the wider community, the department has obtained the license to establish an applied science university. This institution offers fields of study related to safety, fire engineering, incident prevention, and environment engineering. It welcomes not only firefighters but any interested citizen, thereby extending its influence on public safety education beyond the department.

Training within the TFD is a multi-faceted approach, aiming not only to keep its firefighters safe but also to ensure the highest standard of emergency response for the people of Tehran. By prioritising continuous learning and incorporating it into the very structure of the department, the TFD demonstrates its commitment to public safety and the vital role of well-trained personnel in achieving it. The department’s approach to training reflects an understanding that effective firefighting is not just about combating fire; it is about proactively fostering an environment of safety and preparedness.

Natanz nuclear facility fire ‘caused by sabotage,’ says Iranian official

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation has said an explosion last month that damaged the country’s Natanz nuclear facility was the result of “sabotage.”

“Security investigations confirm this was sabotage and what is certain is that an explosion took place in Natanz,” spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said on Sunday, 23rd August.

“But how this explosion took place and with what materials … will be announced by security officials in due course,” he was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

The Natanz uranium enrichment site, much of which is underground, is one of several Iranian facilities monitored by inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog.

Iran’s top security body said after the blast on July 2 that the cause had been determined but would be announced later “for security reasons”. Officials said the incident had caused significant damage that could slow the development of advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges.

Some Iranian officials have previously said the explosion may have been the result of cyber-sabotage, warning that Tehran would retaliate against any country carrying out such attacks.

An article by Iran’s state news agency IRNA in July addressed what it called the possibility of sabotage by enemies such as Israel and the United States, although it stopped short of accusing either directly.

Israeli officials declined to comment on Sunday.

Natanz is the centrepiece of Iran’s enrichment programme, which Tehran says is only for peaceful purposes. Western intelligence agencies and the IAEA believe it had a coordinated, clandestine nuclear arms programme that it halted in 2003.

Tehran denies ever seeking nuclear weapons.

Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for the removal of most international sanctions in a deal reached between Tehran and six world powers in 2015.

But Tehran has gradually reduced its commitments to the accord since US President Donald Trump’s administration withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed and intensified sanctions that have battered Iran’s economy.

The deal only allows Iran to enrich uranium at Natanz facility, with just over 5,000 first-generation IR-1 centrifuges.

On Monday, IAEA head Rafael Mariano Grossi will visit Iran for the first time since taking up the role in December last year.

The IAEA said in a statement Grossi will address Iran’s cooperation with the agency, particularly access for its inspectors to certain sites.

“My objective is that my meetings in Tehran will lead to concrete progress in addressing the outstanding questions that the agency has related to safeguards in Iran and, in particular, to resolve the issue of access,” Grossi said.

“I also hope to establish a fruitful and cooperative channel of direct dialogue with the Iranian government which will be valuable now and in the future.”

Fire at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility reportedly causes significant damage

A fire that broke out at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility last week caused significant damage that could slow the development of advanced centrifuges, an Iranian nuclear official said on Sunday 5th July.

No one was hurt in the mysterious blaze last Thursday at the site, said Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.

Iran’s top security body said on Friday the cause of the fire at the facility had been determined and would be announced later, however, specific details have yet to be released.

Some Iranian officials reportedly said it may have been caused by cyber-sabotage and one warned Tehran would retaliate against any country carrying out such attacks.

“The incident could slow down the development and production of advanced centrifuges in the medium term,” Kamalvandi was quoted as saying by Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

“Iran will replace the damaged building with a bigger one that has more advanced equipment. The incident has caused significant damage, but there were no casualties.”

An article by IRNA last week addressed what it called the possibility of sabotage by enemies such as Israel and the United States, although it stopped short of accusing either directly.

In 2010, the Stuxnet computer virus, widely believed to have been developed by the US and Israel, was discovered after it was used to attack Natanz.

Israel’s defence minister said on Sunday it was not “necessarily” behind every mysterious incident in Iran.

The Natanz uranium-enrichment site, much of which is underground, is one of several Iranian facilities monitored by inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations nuclear watchdog.

The IAEA said on Friday the location of the fire did not contain nuclear materials and none of its inspectors was present at the time.
