Romnish Kapoor has joined NFPA as Regional Sales Manager for MENA

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has appointed Romnish Kapoor as Regional Sales Manager for MENA, strengthening its presence across the Middle East and North Africa as it continues to promote fire, electrical and life safety throughout the region.

Based in Dubai, Kapoor will lead its business development efforts across MENA, expanding customer relationships and supporting organisations seeking to improve fire and life safety through the association’s internationally recognised codes and standards, training, certifications and related solutions.

The appointment reflects NFPA’s continued investment in the region, where rapid infrastructure growth and increasing regulatory focus are driving demand for fire and life safety expertise.

Kapoor brings more than 20 years of experience in fire and life safety, testing, inspection and certification, regulatory compliance, strategic account management and business development.

Before joining, he held a series of commercial leadership positions with UL Solutions, where he led regional sales and strategic account growth initiatives across the Middle East and Africa. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with manufacturers, contractors, government authorities, regulatory agencies, developers, consultants and other industry stakeholders to advance safety, compliance and market development across emerging markets.

FLIR to showcase early fire detection and firefighting technology at NFPA 2026

FLIR will present its fire safety and first responder technologies at the NFPA Conference & Expo 2026, taking place from 22 to 24 June at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The company will exhibit at Booth 471, where it will demonstrate industrial Early Fire Detection solutions and tactical firefighting equipment, including A-series thermal monitoring cameras and K-series hand-held cameras.

Thermal monitoring for high-risk environments

FLIR said its Early Fire Detection systems use continuous radiometric monitoring and intelligent alarming to identify abnormal heat patterns before smoke or flame is visible.

The technology is designed for high-risk environments including battery storage sites, solar fields, manufacturing lines, waste facilities, warehouses and logistics centres. According to FLIR, the systems can be integrated with plant safety controls to trigger automated responses and support 24/7 situational awareness.

Keynote session to discuss life safety compliance

On Wednesday 24 June, Aaron Lawrence, Director of Sales, Automation at FLIR, will lead a keynote session alongside Martin Casillas, Clark County Fire Inspector, and Ryan Sandler, Vice President of Fire & Life Safety at Everon.

The session will examine how thermal imaging, analytics and system design are influencing the next generation of life safety compliance.

FLIR said its technologies are intended to help operators detect risks earlier, support faster response and improve performance in challenging fireground and industrial conditions.

NFPA names Ross Ashley as new president and CEO

NFPA board confirms executive transition

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Board of Directors has appointed Ross Ashley as the organisation’s next president and chief executive officer following a unanimous vote.

Ashley will formally assume the leadership position on 1 July.

The appointment follows the retirement of Jim Pauley who has served as president and CEO since 2014.

David R. Paulison, chair of the NFPA Board, said: “For 130 years NFPA standards, research, public education and training have been the foundation of fire, life and electrical safety.

“Ross has the determination and skills to continue the growth of NFPA to further advance its critical mission.”

Professional background and strategic objectives for NFPA

The incoming executive brings three decades of experience in public safety, intelligence, emergency management and corporate leadership.

Ashley most recently served as Senior Director, Emergency Management at KPMG where he managed preparedness and mitigation programs for state and local clients.

His career includes a tenure as assistant administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) overseeing $10 billion in annual financial assistance.

He also served 20 years in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves and was the first Air National Guard member to receive a master’s degree in Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College.

Ashley said: “I am impressed with the trajectory of NFPA to reach new heights in order to meet the fire and life safety challenges of our times.

“The quest to better protect people and property from fire and other hazards should never be stagnant.

“I’m looking forward to building on the success that Jim and the team have built.”

Transition period and established growth pillars

Pauley will remain with the organisation through the end of July to work alongside his successor during the transition.

The outgoing CEO has held a 35-year affiliation with the body as a member, technical committee participant and standards council chair.

During his ten-year presidency the organisation adopted a strategy focused on becoming more digital, global, connected and diversified.

Pauley said: “I’m proud of our many advancements over the last 12 years.

NFPA Conference & Expo returns to Las Vegas with 130 sessions and 420 exhibitors

NFPA conference details and event scope

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host its annual Conference & Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas on June 22-24, 2026.

NFPA confirmed the event will include more than 130 educational sessions covering issues in fire, electrical and life safety, including code compliance, emergency preparedness and building safety.

The event will bring together thousands of professionals from across the sector to attend sessions on global safety issues, fire protection systems, industrial hazards and electrical safety.

Exhibitors, theatres and technical meeting programme

The NFPA Expo will feature more than 420 exhibitors presenting products and services aimed at supporting compliance with codes and standards in building design, construction and operation.

Attendees will have access to three NFPA Specialty Theaters covering topics such as fire protection system inspections, artificial intelligence in facility management and wildfire preparedness.

The Responder Theater programme includes updates on the Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study, high-rise firefighting tactics, leadership accountability and survey findings from the Needs Assessment of the U.S. Fire Service.

The NFPA Products and Solutions Theater will present information on NFPA tools, resources and product offerings.

A three-day Spotlight on Public Education programme will focus on public health topics and community risk reduction.

The Spotlight on Latin America programme will deliver Spanish language sessions on current industry trends affecting the region.

Dan Chuparkoff will deliver the keynote at the opening general session, drawing on experience in technology leadership roles across multiple organisations.

The NFPA Technical Meeting is scheduled for June 25-26, allowing members and registered participants to vote on certified amending motions relating to NFPA Standards.

New fire protection classification rule set for Abu Dhabi consultants

Fire protection accreditation becomes mandatory

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has launched a mandatory accreditation programme for engineering consultancy offices in Abu Dhabi working in fire protection and life safety engineering.

Abu Dhabi Media Office reported that the scheme is described as the first regulatory model of its kind in the UAE and applies to consultancy offices submitting fire protection system designs in the emirate.

The programme was launched in collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

It requires engineering consultancy offices to obtain a classification in Fire Protection and Life Safety Engineering Consultancy by completing the Certified Fire Protection Engineer (CFPE) programme.

The requirement is intended to improve the quality of engineering designs related to fire protection and safety systems and compliance with approved standards.

Certification deadline set for September 2026

Engineering professionals within consultancy offices in Abu Dhabi will complete an internationally recognised training and professional accreditation programme to obtain CFPE certification.

The certification will also be included within the classification management system of the DMT.

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority said the requirement will become mandatory when consultancy offices submit fire protection system designs in Abu Dhabi.

The deadline for completing the training programmes and obtaining official certification is 1 September 2026.

After that date, preliminary engineering design submissions from consultancy offices will not be accepted unless the registered engineer holds a valid CFPE certification.

Standards and design review requirements

The accreditation programme is intended to standardise design, review and compliance practices in line with NFPA standards.

It is also expected to improve the quality of design and review processes for fire protection systems in buildings and facilities.

The authority said the programme forms part of its work on fire protection and life safety systems in Abu Dhabi.

Firefighting demands equipment that performs reliably in the most extreme and unpredictable conditions.

Central to this is safe, high-performance battery technology: lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries, which provide maximum safety for firefighters thanks to their chemical stability, thermal resilience and non-toxic nature.

LiFePO₄ batteries also offer practical advantages over standard lithium-ion technology, beyond their safety and reliability.

Dustin Gilson Clarke, Business Development Manager for Thermal Imaging, and Jon Turner, Technical Authority on TICs at Avon Protection, explain how these advantages translate into real-world benefits on the fireground.

LiFePO₄ batteries are being recognised for safety. Why does the chemical stability and thermal resilience make them an ideal firefighting application?

Jon Turner: They’re quite resilient to thermal runaway.

If you take a conventional lithium‑ion battery, once it gets hot you can’t stop it.

It will get hotter, burst into flames and eventually explode.

If you’re talking about a large battery or lots together, you get a cascade effect that when one cell goes, the next one will go and so on.

That’s why you see videos of scooters exploding, because they’ve got a battery pack that’s made-up of lots of traditional lithium-ion cells and any damage to one cell will make all of them go.

You can’t spray water or foam on it, it will just burn until it’s finished.

With LiFePO₄, it doesn’t suffer the thermal runaway.

If you damage it or short it out it could get hot temporarily, but then cool down.

How does LiFePO₄ technology reduce the risk of fire‑related incidents and what made you choose them for the camera?


JT: They’re not prone to self-ignition and to undergo thermal runaway, and it’s the thermal runaway which causes fires.

If you take something like a mobile phoneand bend it in half, the chances are when you put it down, you’d feel it starting to get hot after a while.

There would then be some smoke followed by a sort of fireball explosion.

If that device had been fitted with a LiFePO₄battery, potentially that just wouldn’t happen.

It would not undergo that thermal runaway.


In terms of why we would use it in a camera, we know it is going to be treated harshly.

During testing we deliberately do things to see whether we can induce anything bad to happen, the sort of things you’d traditionally do on a of more commercial type product.

But nevertheless, there are a lot of cameras out there that still use those traditional cells.

I’m not criticising them, but I feel more confident in our technology.

In emergency scenarios, non‑toxic and eco‑friendly battery chemistry can be critical. How does LiFePO₄ protect firefighters from harmful fumes?

Dustin Gilson‑Clarke: Firefighters already face enough hazardous chemicals at the scene but with this you’re not going to get thermal runaway from the battery whilst being used in that environment.

That’s the safety part of it and that’s why it has its own certification.

What advantages do LiFePO₄ batteries offer in terms of cycle life and reliability?

JT: The primary use of aLiFePO₄battery is long life applications, so you can charge them at least 2000 times without really seeing much degradation in the battery.

Whereas you’re going to start seeing degradation in a conventional lithium-ion battery after around 500 charges.

If I can equate this back to something like a mobile phone, after about two years the battery does not behave the same as on the day you bought it.

It still works, but its capacity has dropped off and it will continue to drop off.

With LiFePO₄, they’re a lot more stable and very resilient.

So, if you compare that to a nominal 500, that really is pushing the life span.

How do LiFePO₄ batteries perform under extreme heat conditions?

JT: They are a lot happier to still operate fully in high temperature conditions.

With lithium-ion, there’s this magic point at which it will go into thermal runaway and it will just get hotter and hotter.

Whereas the LiFePO₄shouldn’t ever reach that point.

It’s very resilient to any reactions like that.

In terms of performance, they’re very good and don’t degrade very much at all at high temperatures.

What feedback have you received so far?

DGC:  Many end users may not notice a major difference between LiFePO₄ and standard lithium-ion batteries.

To them it’s all about the practicality and the fact that it can be mounted on the outside of the camera is a big benefit.

Adding to that, swapping these batteries out whilst wearing the fire equipment and fire gloves is also a big advantage.

It’ll probably take around three to four hours to fully charge them, but what that gives them is eight hours of operating time, because they’re able to take the camera with them and the spare battery in their pocket.

Swapping is easy, and within 5 seconds you’ve changed the battery and you’re up and running.

When you see a lot of the other cameras in the market that don’t have the certification we have, the battery must be done on the inside of the camera which means five seconds to swap could be five minutes.

It gives you a lot more flexibility on how the end user uses it.

JT: Just to pick up on that point, that is a mandatory requirement.

If you want to make a camera to meet the NFPA specification, it has to be locked into the camera with a tool that’s kept outside of the incident.

Not all cameras have to be made to the NFPA certification.

But it is the only true certification process that exists for thermal cameras for firefighting.

But everything that’s in there is in there for a well thought out reason.

It’s important that you should not allow people to remove a battery from a camera in a scene, either deliberately or accidentally because whenever you disconnect the battery from something, if it’s live, you’re going to generate a spark.

If you happen to be in the wrong sort of environment, that spark could be the last thing you see.

Hence our cameras are certified and tested externally to make sure that any chance of a detonation of explosive gas can when the battery is connected or disconnected from the camera.

Gear Wash has opened a new facility in Santa Fe Springs, California, marking its second location in the state and its 14th facility nationwide.

The company announced that the site will provide National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) compliant personal protective equipment (PPE) care for fire departments in the Santa Fe Springs region.

California’s adherence to NFPA cleaning and repair guidelines is a legal mandate and the new facility will offer cleaning, inspection, repair and alteration services for PPE.

Gear Wash cites demand from fire departments

Taylor Burke Gilman, President of Gear Wash, said: “Thanks to strong partnerships with major departments like LA County and San Francisco, we’ve seen firsthand the growing need for reliable, compliant PPE care throughout California.

KNPC marks Kuwait firefighter graduations as fire training centre reaches 250 alumni

Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) held a ceremony to mark the graduation of a new batch of newly appointed firefighters working at the company and at Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC).

State news agency Kuna reported that the ceremony took place on Sunday at KNPC’s Main Support and Emergency Operations Center.

The number of graduates reached 65 firefighters.

The firefighters completed a training course accredited by the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The ceremony was attended by Al-Ahmadi Governor Sheikh Homoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, KNPC Chief Executive Officer and Acting Chief Executive Officer of KIPIC Wadha Al-Khateeb.

Strengthening firefighting systems and training centre accreditation

KNPC Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Support Services Kholoud Al-Mutairi said: “Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is keen to strengthen its firefighting system, in recognition of the vital role it plays.”

Al-Mutairi said enhancing the efficiency of firefighters is among the company’s top priorities through advanced training and qualification programmes.

She highlighted the Ahmadi Governor’s support in helping the company’s Fire Training Center obtain official accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

Al-Mutairi added that the Fire Training Center has graduated five batches of firefighters since its establishment, totalling nearly 250 personnel.

She congratulated the graduates and said the course represents a fundamental step in their professional journey.

The NFPA Standards Council: Who are the people shaping global fire and life safety standards?

What is the NFPA Standards Council?

Most NFPA standards never make headlines, but they influence decisions made every day in buildings, industrial facilities and fire grounds around the world.

Behind those documents is the National Fire Protection Association Standards Council, the body responsible for overseeing how NFPA standards are developed, interpreted and maintained.

Appointed by the NFPA Board of Directors, the 13-member Council provides governance for the standards process, appoints technical committee members and serves as the final appeals authority when questions or disputes arise.

Meeting three times each year and presiding over the annual NFPA Technical Meeting, the Council is responsible for ensuring that standards are developed in accordance with NFPA Regulations and Rules.

It appoints members to NFPA Technical and Correlating Committees and serves as the final appeals body for issues related to standards development.

Together, the Council brings decades of experience from engineering, enforcement, manufacturing, research and the fire service – a breadth of perspective designed to support balanced, consensus-based standards.

Leadership grounded in global fire engineering

Chairing the Council is James R. Quiter, whose career has spanned more than four decades at the forefront of fire protection engineering.

Recently retired as a Principal at Arup, Quiter previously led the firm’s 300-person Los Angeles office and remains affiliated with the company.

Widely recognised for his expertise in performance-based design and US codes, he has chaired multiple NFPA correlating committees and currently leads the NFPA High Rise Building Safety Advisory Committee.

His work with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, including contributions to guidance on very tall buildings, reflects a career focused on translating engineering theory into practical safety outcomes.

Code enforcement and public administration expertise

From a municipal perspective, Anthony C. Apfelbeck brings more than 35 years of experience in building and fire codes.

As Director of the Building and Fire Safety Department for the City of Altamonte Springs, Florida, he oversees everything from construction plan review to investigations and code enforcement.

His career began in the fire service and has expanded into technical committee work, professional education and executive leadership – a combination that reflects the real-world challenges of applying codes consistently and effectively.

Engineering practice and complex risk environments

Industry engineering practice is represented by figures such as Tracey D. Bellamy, Chief Engineering Officer at Telgian Corporation.

Bellamy’s work focuses on fire protection engineering and life safety consulting for large construction projects and hazardous materials facilities.

His experience reflects the growing need to address complex risk profiles across diverse occupancies and industrial environments.

Similarly, Michael A. Crowley of Coffman Engineers brings more than 40 years of consulting experience, with a particular focus on healthcare occupancies and life safety systems.

A former president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Crowley continues to work with architects, facility managers and owners globally, helping translate standards into operational safety.

Standards development from the inside out

Several Council members have spent significant portions of their careers embedded directly in standards development.

Guy R. Colonna, a former NFPA engineer and staff liaison, worked for more than three decades on documents addressing maritime fire protection and industrial hazards.

Since retiring from NFPA, he has remained active through consulting and technical committee participation, bringing historical knowledge of how standards evolve over time.

Raymond A. Grill, principal of Ray Grill Consulting, also represents this long-term engagement with NFPA’s technical process.

With more than 40 years in fire protection engineering, Grill has chaired and served on numerous NFPA committees, particularly those related to life safety, sprinklers and emergency communications.

Fire service and operational leadership

Operational fire service experience is represented by Randy J. Krause, Fire Chief of the Port of Seattle Fire Department.

Krause’s career includes service in the US Air Force, private-sector industrial fire protection and leadership at one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs.

His long-standing involvement with NFPA occupational health and safety committees reflects the importance of aligning standards with responder realities.

Catherine L. Stashak, now an engineer with the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, also brings frontline fire service experience.

After two decades with the Des Plaines Fire Department, she moved into regulatory and technical services, where her work now supports rulemaking, code interpretation and engineering review across a wide range of fire and life safety issues.

Science, testing and certification perspectives

The Council also includes members whose careers are rooted in testing, certification and research.

John A. LeBlanc, a senior engineering specialist at FM, has spent four decades developing property loss prevention guidance and supporting special hazard standards.

His work bridges chemical engineering, fire protection engineering and practical loss prevention strategies.

At UL Solutions, Dwayne E. Sloan serves as Technical Director for the Built Environment Division.

Over 37 years, his focus has included reaction-to-fire testing, exterior wall assemblies, ventilation systems and building materials.

His involvement across UL, NFPA and ASTM committees highlights the interconnection between testing, certification and code adoption.

Electrical safety and systems expertise

Electrical systems and power reliability are represented by Alan Manche of Schneider Electric.

With more than 30 years in the electrical industry, Manche has worked across product design, certification and standards development.

His long involvement with the National Electrical Code and emergency power system standards reflects the critical role of electrical safety within the broader fire protection landscape.

Industry association and system design insight

Rounding out the Council is Victoria B. Valentine of the American Fire Sprinkler Association.

A licensed professional engineer and Fellow of SFPE, Valentine has spent over two decades working with non-profit associations on professional qualifications, training and codes and standards development.

Her background in fire sprinkler systems and risk assessment adds a systems-based perspective to the Council’s work.

NFPA explains how 2026 NEC draft changes can be traced and reviewed

A new NFPA video explains how to research why changes were made in the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC).

The video features Corey Hannahs, Master Electrician and Senior Electrical Specialist at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), who demonstrates how users can access draft documents, committee statements and public input records to understand the reasoning behind specific revisions.

He explains that the 2026 NEC was issued last fall and that the public input stage is already open for the 2029 NEC, reflecting the three-year development cycle used across NFPA codes and standards.

Using NFPA tools to compare first and second drafts

Hannahs demonstrates how to navigate the NFPA standards development process and the NEC document information webpage at nfpa.org/70 to view current and prior editions.

He shows how the first draft presents changes from the 2023 NEC, with additions and deletions clearly marked, and explains that users must log in with a free NFPA account to view the draft material.

Using section 110.16 as an example, he outlines how users can select individual revisions to view committee statements explaining the intent behind changes, along with associated public inputs.

He then moves to the second draft view, describing how it presents a refined version of the first draft language after public comments have been reviewed and additional revisions made.

Committee reasoning and public input behind revised wording

Hannahs explains that committee statements and public comments provide insight into how and why wording changes are made.

He highlights examples where language was adjusted to align with the NEC style manual and where revisions were introduced to clarify marking requirements and practical application.

He also points to changes in arc flash marking requirements, including an update to the timestamp label so it reflects the date when the arc flash risk assessment was completed rather than the date the label was applied, which he says provides clearer context for future system reviews and modifications.

He says the video is intended to help users independently investigate NEC changes, gain clarity on committee decisions and build a better understanding of how draft revisions develop into final code language.
