Designed to simplify PFP application for energy sector assets, Chartek ONE aims to enhance efficiency, streamline installation, and boost health and safety measures.

The new product is a 100% solids, boron-free, two-pack material that provides combined protection against corrosion, cryogenic conditions, and hydrocarbon fires.

Chartek ONE offers up to three hours of jet and pool fire resistance, effectively shielding assets across a broad range of temperatures.

This latest PFP solution caters to the strict weight and safety requirements of offshore oil and gas industries, aiming to reduce workshop hours by up to 59%, as reported by International.

Enhanced installation efficiency for fire protection

Chartek ONE is formulated to speed up the installation of PFP systems, both in workshops and on-site locations, while maintaining the same level of fire protection.

By reducing installed weight, it addresses the challenges faced by sectors like offshore oil and gas, which demand low-weight solutions without compromising safety.

According to International, this accelerated installation process can lead to reduced labour and material costs, saving both time and resources over the lifecycle of the protected asset.

This streamlined approach supports industries prioritising cost and time savings while adhering to rigorous safety standards.

Tested to meet global standards

Chartek ONE has been rigorously tested to meet critical industry standards, including NORSOK M-501:2022 Edition 7 and ISO 22899, which cover standard and high-heat jet fire scenarios.

Its 100% solids composition not only enhances durability but also reduces occupational risks, improving Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) performance.

The boron-free formulation also reduces the environmental impact of the product, aligning with AkzoNobel’s sustainability goals.

Light Science Technologies secures £1.17m follow-on fire protection order in Manchester

Light Science Technologies Holdings (LSTH) has secured a follow-on order worth £1.17 million from a Manchester-based construction services company.

The order is for the Injectaclad cavity remediation system in two additional residential tower blocks and is part of LSTH’s Passive Fire Protection (PFP) division.

The project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2025.

This new contract follows the first phase of work with the same customer, where LSTH has already completed approximately £520,000 of an order valued at around £600,000.

Expected financial contribution from PFP division

LSTH’s PFP division has experienced increasing contract activity, and its management anticipates a strong financial contribution from this sector for the current financial year ending in November 2024.

Revenues from the PFP division during the first half of the year reached £300,000, and the full-year contribution is expected to total between £1.5 million and £1.7 million.

The company’s ongoing contracts are expected to provide clear visibility into the next financial year, with the PFP division poised for further growth.

CEO highlights growth in fire safety market

LSTH’s CEO, Simon Deacon, commented on the importance of the new contract: “We’re pleased to win this considerable contract which also increases our visibility and represents growing traction in the conversion of the wider Group quoted pipeline, which currently stands at £50m.”

Deacon added: “The division is well placed to capitalise on the UK’s fast-growing fire safety market, which has a potential total value of up to £50bn and is being driven by increasing regulation.”

Deacon further noted that the PFP division has received over £2.5 million in orders since its establishment in November 2023, and with a committed order book of £1.4 million, it is well-positioned for continued growth.

The UK’s fire safety market is experiencing rapid growth, largely driven by new regulations aimed at improving safety standards.

LSTH expects to see further growth opportunities as a result of these developments.

The company has observed an increasing number of enquiries, reflecting confidence in its ability to meet the demands of the growing market.

LSTH’s capacity to service both new and existing clients has been a critical factor in the PFP division’s success.

Deacon noted: “We are excited by the significant opportunities within our existing and potential customer base.

What challenges do you anticipate in promoting this new campaign and how does Quelfire plan to address them?

With a lot of information to digest, we expect the industry to have many questions, and perhaps some resistance from those who have always worked one way.

There also may be apprehension about past work.

As a firm believer in education and collaboration, we aim to meet any concerns and questions by continuing to support key stakeholders from design to installation: making information readily available and providing extensive technical support.

We must all work transparently and collaboratively.

Quelfire Early Engagement Case Study: RUH’s Dyson Cancer Centre

The Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH) is a 52-acre site that provides specialist, general acute, and emergency treatment for around 410,000 people.

In October 2023, the RUH opened the Dyson Cancer Centre to help transform the care provided for patients, families, and carers.

Over three storeys tall, the new centre is located next to the main entrance of the RUH. It will bring most of the RUH’s cancer services, including research teams, to one facility.

As the selected manufacturer, we worked closely with the main contractor, Kier Construction, and the firestopping contractor, Optimum Drywall.

The main objective was to achieve a good-quality design that was fit for purpose, and to build using suitably fire tested details in line with industry best practices and regulations. 

What was the main challenge during the project?

The primary challenge faced by the client involved ensuring the required services had appropriate fire test evidence for the proposed supporting construction.

For instance, many of the proposed walls used single-skin plasterboard. While we had suitable solutions for the proposed pipes and cables, there was a lack of tested solutions for metal ducts and dampers passing through them.

This required a risk assessment led by the fire engineer, BB7, to check previous tested details used on projects and details from the damper manufacturer.

Another issue arose with pneumatic pipes, typically used in hospitals and considerably thinner than standard plastic pipes.

This ultimately led to several untested applications, requiring the client to rethink the design.

What solutions did we reach to resolve any issues?

We had worked with Optimum Drywall on other projects; thus, they recommended the client engage with us to ensure the design of the building was compliant before entering the build stage.

The first early engagement meeting occurred in December 2021, followed by corresponding meetings.

Cross-party communication was a pivotal factor when resolving any issues faced; Optimum Drywall was included in the early meetings, sharing insights into the practicability of suggested installs. We also worked with other parties, including BB7, to ensure everyone was aligned.

Due to the available time and flexibility, we had the opportunity to incorporate the pneumatic pipes proposed on this project into our ongoing test programme for the client.

We tested two specific scenarios: 110mm pneumatic pipes with a 1.8mm wall thickness and 160mm pneumatic pipes with a 3.2mm wall thickness.

This ultimately meant the client could progress with their proposals. When ducts and dampers were proposed in single-skin walls, it was proposed to change the walls to a double-skin plasterboard system to work with tested systems.

Another scenario we could advise on was a three-sided plasterboard wall. On the third and fourth sides, there was a concrete soffit.

We recommended a tested detail allowing deflection between the wall and the soffit. This permitted the services to be placed as high as possible.

What kind of success did the client enjoy with our services/ products?

This development proved the benefits of adopting an early engagement approach in firestopping and was a prime example of all parties working together to achieve the same end goal: protecting people and property.

Early engagement brought together the requirements, for instance, the wall and services requirements, and allowed the client to thoroughly understand the presented tested details.

This ensured the client could resolve any issues at the design stage and work around the tested details available due to the flexibility of the design.

For instance, the client could confidently employ the large metal trunking they required because we already had a tested solution.

In cases where we lacked a tested solution, and the client could not go back and redesign, we dedicated the time to conduct the necessary testing for the specific application.

This provided essential test data for the client and benefited the entire industry, particularly in sectors like healthcare, where pneumatic pipes are increasingly being used.

Notably, the technical documents offer spacing guidance to maintain the correct distance between services and openings in walls and ceilings, crucial for both single and multi-service penetrations.

Furthermore, these packs contain information on accommodating movement at the deflection head, essential for maintaining compartment integrity.

Shurgard enhances fire safety in new London sites with Promat’s expertise

Shurgard collaborates with Promat for enhanced passive fire protection in London

European self-storage operator, Shurgard, has partnered with passive fire protection specialists Promat to secure its new facilities in Chiswick and Chadwell Heath, London.

This collaboration aims to provide the highest standards of fire safety and durability in Shurgard’s construction projects.

Shurgard prioritises the safety of its customers’ property, making the implementation of passive fire protection systems a key aspect of their new constructions.

Both projects faced tight build schedules, requiring the passive fire protection work to be efficient and compliant with the highest standards.

The role of partners in the project

The main contractor Appian, along with Three Sixty Architecture, played a significant role in supporting Shurgard.

They focused on maximising lettable space while ensuring effective passive fire protection strategies, all backed by rigorous fire testing and certification.

Significant adjustments were made to the mezzanine floor system design at both sites, adapting to updated EN testing standards for steelwork.

This included revising the passive fire protection (PFP) specifications to accommodate electrical charging points in the car parks without compromising lettable space.

Innovative solutions and benefits

Promat’s involvement from the early stages of design provided specialised PFP detailing with their Promatect 250 system.

This approach ensured compliance and facilitated easy installation, maximising lettable space.

The introduction of electric vehicle charging points necessitated a fire protection solution that aligned with the project’s lean construction methodology.

Promat’s Supalux product was chosen for its lightweight and space-efficient properties, allowing installation before making the building weathertight and supporting the project’s swift progress.

This package included all necessary technical information and performance testing data to ensure efficient installation.

Its original focus was predominantly around electronic, mobile and static security services, predominantly into the retail market.

In 2017, a new senior management team including myself was brought into the business to drive expansion into new areas. We were brought in to expand the business. The business has grown substantially over the last five years, predominantly through both organic and acquisition growth.

We took more of an integrated service approach as we were finding clients that are looking to reduce their supply chain, particularly around the field of security, fire and risk. We’ve been quite successful at both retaining and developing our customer base into new sectors. Today, we’ve got over 800 employees across the UK working in a wide range of frontline business support roles.

Our headquarters is in Bradford, and we’ve got operational bases across the country to support our operational teams. Fire and life safety systems is a critical growth area: over the last four years, that’s been the biggest area of investment for us in terms of the development of services that support clients. Our approach is to work with them from early-stage risk identification all the way through to helping close out their fire and life safety risks.

What is your position and background within the industry?

I’m KST’s Chief Operating Officer. I joined the business as part of a new management team in 2017. I support and oversee the strategic planning, and the development of many of our new business streams. As well as the fire side acquisitions, we’ve made some acquisitions in the security side with Cougar Monitoring. We’ve also launched a number of new businesses including our specialist void protection business, which installs temporary fire alarm systems.

I’m responsible for the biggest divisions within the group. Both the fire and the electronic security systems businesses report into myself, including our smoke control business and our fire risk assessment business.

I’m also responsible for merger and acquisitions activity. I find strategic partners to work on, develop our strategic relationships, and then when relevant, make acquisition targets that bring them into the group. Finally, I’m involved with the commercial sales development – working with the sales team on targeting client sector development and making sure that we’re growing in the areas that we want to grow as a business.

Why did KST decide to integrate more fire safety into the business?

It’s something that we’ve grown mainly over the last five years. We had a small fire capability, like many others we were focused on security and dabbling in fire. Back in 2020 we acquired a business called Silver Group. Silver Group expanded our capabilities into the fire and life safety area, particularly around smoke ventilation. Then two months ago we made a further acquisition in the delivery of fire with a business called EFire. We also acquired a fire risk assessment business 18 months ago.

How did these acquisitions come about?

The acquisition around Silver Group was about strengthening our fire capabilities. We wanted to be one of the first and only ones in the market to be able to offer combined smoke, ventilation, fire alarms and systems, and maintenance and installation services. There are only a few companies at the moment that cover both smoke and fire. Silver Group was a natural acquisition as we had been working with the company for a number of years as a subcontract partner, so we decided to bring them in house.

For fire risk assessment, we saw substantial opportunities within the marketplace. We had opportunities among our existing clients who needed to carry out risk assessments. So we came across the Quidvis business and we saw that as a real differentiator, so we brought that into the group. Then recently we acquired EFire to further strengthen our national capabilities on fire, but equally to help move us into some sectors which are new to the business like healthcare, NHS and the government.

What is the plan for KST moving forward within the fire and life safety sector?

It’s a major area of investment for us. We’re going to continue to develop in that area and grow our portfolio. We are creating a number of strategic partnerships with companies in areas of services that we don’t currently deliver.

I see the opportunities around integrating passive and active fire protection very much in a more unified way. At the moment, passive and active are almost treated as two different disciplines. We’re just about to complete a strategic partnership with a business that will allow us to support our clients in the provision of fire doors, fire shutters and fast stopping.

If you just look at the fire doors market, it’s never really been considered, but in this post-Grenfell world people are now having to deal with that. We see the opportunity to be able to provide our clients that solution off the back of our core services.

There is also continued growth potential in terms of technology. We will continue to work with our manufacturer and supplier partners to look at how we can bring technology to the play to improve our service delivery. For instance, we’re working heavily with Honeywell Gent at the moment. We are a Gent partner and are looking at their automation systems. We plan to put them into places so that when we send engineers out, we’re proactively maintaining systems rather than reactively maintaining systems.

Smoke ventilation wise, a lot of companies installed smoke ventilation but never have them maintained. We see massive opportunities of growth in the maintenance of smoke vents, both natural and mechanical, in the future.
