ASFP sets the standard for passive fire protection with new Advisory Notes

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has announced the release of three new Advisory Notes (AN) and an updated document, providing comprehensive guidance on various aspects of firestopping, penetration seals, and smoke seals. These publications aim to enhance industry knowledge and promote best practices in passive fire protection.

Advisory Note 13: Testing of Partial Penetrations

AN 13 focuses on the testing of partial penetrations, specifically socket boxes installed into drywall systems. As a temporary measure while a CEN standard is being developed, the advisory note recommends an ad-hoc approach to firestopping these products, based on testing to BS EN1364-1: Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements. Walls. This guidance emphasizes the importance of maintaining wall performance when incorporating electrical boxes into fire-rated assemblies.

Advisory Note 30: Transition from CE Marking to UKCA Mark

AN 30 addresses the transition from CE marking to the UKCA mark and its impact on different passive fire protection product families. It outlines the necessary steps during the transition period and offers valuable insights for manufacturers and specifiers to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape effectively. This note aims to ensure a smooth transition and compliance with the updated requirements.

Advisory Note 31: Smoke Seals for Active Fire Curtains

AN 31 addresses concerns related to the usage of smoke seals in conjunction with active fire curtains. In response to false claims suggesting the limited effectiveness of draught excluders in preventing the passage of cold smoke during fire resistance tests, this document clarifies that the smoke seals used are based on the same technology employed in smoke leakage-rated fire-resisting doors. The note emphasizes the necessity of including smoke seals during both leakage and fire tests.

Updated Advisory Note 15: Flexible Wall Systems for Service Penetration Seals

Advisory Note 15 has been updated to reflect changes in the interchange of flexible wall systems for service penetration seal systems. Originally providing visual clarification for a complex statement in BS EN1366-3: 2009: Fire resistance tests for service installations. Penetration seals, this revised note aligns its drawings with the updated BS EN 1366-3: 2021 version. This update ensures accurate and up-to-date guidance for practitioners in the field.

ROCKWOOL to preview latest products at FIREX 2023

Insulation manufacturer ROCKWOOL is set to showcase its latest fire protection solutions at FIREX 2023 which takes place from 16-18 May at ExCel London.

The company will be launching a new product, SP FireStop EN, and previewing the FirePro Detail Designer, a new tool designed to help specifiers and fire engineers access the correct ROCKWOOL standard details for their project.

Visitors to the ROCKWOOL stand (FI. 1640) will see the new SP FireStop EN product in person, alongside other FirePro fire stopping solutions as part of real wall build-ups.

Technical support from ROCKWOOL passive fire protection experts will be readily available for customers who have questions or require assistance.

Additionally, visitors can request Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions to gain further knowledge about the products and their applications.

SP FireStop EN

ROCKWOOL is broadening its existing FirePro® range by introducing SP FireStop EN, a linear cavity fire stopping solution that comes with a novel high emissivity black foil facing.

The new product expands the application possibilities offered by ROCKWOOL, delivering superior EI120 performance for cavities measuring up to 600mm*. The product has been subjected to rigorous testing against Steel Frame Substrates to ensure its suitability.

FirePro Detail Designer

ROCKWOOL also has plans to showcase its forthcoming FirePro Detail Designer during the show and is inviting attendees to share their thoughts on this interactive design tool, which is currently under development.

The tool is intended to aid specifiers and fire engineers in choosing the best ROCKWOOL FirePro products for their needs. By analysing project requirements, the app will suggest an appropriate specification based on a pre-existing and tested standard detail, thereby simplifying the manual process of reviewing ROCKWOOL standard details.

The Formula for Competency with Quelfire

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, competency is defined as having a ‘possession of sufficient knowledge or skill.’

Although this is true, at Quelfire, we believe that there is more to competency than knowledge, skill, or experience. Whilst you can tangibly measure someone’s qualifications or skills, it is also about your personal attributes and how you use them to apply your skills that makes you competent. We often say that competency is knowing what you do not know and being prepared to ask for help.

This often works for those who find themselves in a situation where they understand that what is being asked of them is outside of their competence, but could find suitable assistance to complete the job. However, in other cases, it is also about knowing your limitations and when you are not the most suitable person for the project.

What can support competency?

Competency can be hard to measure, assess or evaluate directly because there is no benchmark to compare it to. Nevertheless, we believe that it can be observed indirectly through knowledge, and actions.

Qualifications: Qualifications work as a starting point so long as you build on them. While they do not make you fully competent, there is no doubt that they play an important role in establishing a foundation for initial skills, knowledge and understanding.

Training: No matter how competent you think you are, or how many years you have spent studying, everyone still needs to refresh their skills every once in a while, and keep up to date with current practices. Therefore, training and actively looking for opportunities to broaden your knowledge is highly recommended. This could be through attending CPDs or product-specific training, partaking in early engagement meetings, or reviewing sample boards as a benchmark for compliant installations.

Knowledge: Thirst for knowledge is key. Wanting to gain further knowledge about your niche sector, and even areas that go beyond, gives you a broader way of viewing challenges faced in the industry. This not only through third-party training, but by building and surrounding yourself with professional relations who support growth and have the right mindset when it comes to fire safety.

A culture of copy and paste

Competency is the act of understanding the why, thinking for yourself, and knowing how something works. Unfortunately, we have welcomed a culture of training people to copy and paste and then reference the source of information, without questioning it. We are not training people on the importance of doing their due diligence.

The construction industry can be fairly complacent in terms of assuming that everyone is competent. For example, a qualified electrician is competent to wire up a socket box but is then asked to firestop the socket using a putty pad. Whilst it is not hard to install a putty pad, does the electrician understand why they are installing it and that it is a life safety critical element? 

In another scenario, an architect is copying and pasting the tested details to their drawing, which is the correct thing to do when they have engaged with a competent manufacturer, but are they competent enough to understand why that is the most suitable firestopping tested detail and how it will work in the event of a fire?

Competency is not solely about whether you can do something, but whether you know the fundamentals of what you are being asked to do.

That is why transparency of fire testing and information in the construction industry is crucial. We understand that there is a lot of information out there and therefore, we cannot assume that all parties from architects to installers are masters of everything.

It is imperative that all parties communicate transparently, share competencies, and encourage questions. For example, in the context of fire testing certification, instead of merely relying on what the test certificate says – ask for the test report and any other relevant information that can evidence this.  

Communication, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge. Working this way ensures that all parties are on the same page, working to best practices and showing that they are competent.

And what about ethics?

There is often a great deal of discussion around competency, but what is very rarely spoken about is ethics. In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, ethics is defined as ‘the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group.’

We believe it to be making decisions based on our company values. For example, if we do not have a firestopping tested solution, then we will not sell the product because this goes against everything we believe in which is protecting people and property. We also actively work to educate the construction industry on the importance of fire safety and why all firestopping products need to be installed compliantly.

When you work with other parties who are on the same page, striving for ultimate building compliance, your ethical stance will not be jeopardised. Again, it is about asking the right questions and establishing whose values line up with yours.

Competency and ethics work coherently together, you cannot have one without the other. For instance, if we did not have a tested solution for a customer’s application but proceeded to sell them a product for an untested application, then this would not be competent or ethical.

It would not make us competent as we proceeded to sell a product even when we were not the most suitable manufacturer for the application in question. It also would not make us ethical because we have acted from the perspective of financial gain rather than the interest of the safety of future occupants of the building.

Therefore, although it is harder to measure ethics as there are no qualifications you can obtain, it is equally as important as competency.

Know your limitations

The Passive Fire Protection Forum (PFPF) guide to ‘Undertaking Technical Assessments of Fire Performance of Construction Products Based on Fire Test Evidence’, Section 6, p.15, states: ‘Different levels of competency of individual assessor and reviewer have been identified with different levels of responsibility and remit in regard to the complexity level of assessment that they may undertake.’

This is a holistic way of approaching competency because it weighs up qualifications, experience, and knowledge and therefore, clearly sets competence boundaries and allows the relevant person to know their limitations.

For example, a Principal Assessor/ Reviewer requires a chartered engineer qualification (or equivalent) and five years of relevant testing and assessment experience. Whereas an Assessor needs either four years of relevant testing and assessment experience or two years of experience plus qualifications equivalent to a technical engineer or above.

This demonstrates that competency cannot be measured on one basis. Qualifications, knowledge, and experience need to be built into it and, of course, knowing when you are not competent enough to carry out the job.

It is important for people to also understand that there are manufacturers and system suppliers, like ourselves, who are willing to provide support and an evidence-based solution.

Help is available and it is not wrong to not know all the answers.

Quelfire launches passive fire protection for service penetrations in buildings training

Quelfire, a leading provider of passive fire protection solutions, has announced the availability of their CPD training titled “Effective Passive Fire Protection for Service Penetrations in Buildings”. This training is intended to raise awareness and educate the construction industry about the importance of passive fire protection.

The CPD certified training is aimed primarily at specifiers, architects, designers, contractors, project managers, consultants, and surveyors. The training emphasises the importance of early engagement in ensuring compliant installations and effective design and specification of complete firestopping systems.

In addition, the training provides an overview of available solutions and what to look for to ensure suitability and compliance. The training is held by one of Quelfire’s fire containment specialists and typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes.

The live presentation is mostly delivered virtually via Zoom or MS Teams and is offered to architect practices, main contractors, and other organisations that can bring in at least 10-12 participants to the training. ASFP updates online passive fire protection training

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has updated its generic Online Introduction to Passive Fire Protection. The course provides a basic overview of passive fire protection (PFP) and its role in the overall fire strategy of a building.

In addition, a new version of the course, Online Introduction to Passive Fire Protection (Installation) has been developed with new content specifically designed to cover the particular needs of passive fire installers.

Delivered in eight learning modules, the new improved Online Introduction course covers key elements of design, installation and inspection. It is intended to provide a first step for those considering a career in the passive fire protection industry.

The learning modules covered are: putting passive fire protection in context; the basics of structural fire protection; introduction to fire resisting walls and floors; introduction to cavity barriers; introduction to fire resisting doors and glazing; introduction to fire resisting ductwork and dampers; introduction to firestopping; and introduction to fire testing and certification.

The Online Introduction to PFP (Installation) has taken the content from the general introduction course and has been specifically tailored for those who undertake installation activities. It contextualises the information in the generic introduction course and provides instruction on particular features and concerns to consider during the installation of passive fire protection systems.

Both courses use images, animations, audio, and video to enhance the learning experience and introduce the key features of each type of passive fire protection system. Each version of the course takes around three hours to complete but can be undertaken at a time to suit, stopping and starting as necessary.

Successful completion will provide learners with a sense of what good fire protection in buildings looks like. This will allow them to better understand the role of the various fire safety measures in the built environment, and in particular passive fire protection.

Firestopping: The cost of not getting it right the first time around

It may seem more expensive initially; however, money will be saved in the long run by choosing competency over cost and wanting to do it right the first time around.

ASFP names Passive Fire Protection Award Winners

The winners of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) 2022 Passive Fire Protection Awards were announced at the Association’s Awards Dinner at the Park Regis Hotel in Birminghamon 25 November.

Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the winners were presented with their awards by special guest speaker Mandy Hickson, a former Royal Air Force pilot. Hickson later regaled guests with tales from her time as a fast jet pilot in Iraq, sharing insights of successful leadership and highlighting the importance of encouraging diversity in all industry sectors.

The 2022 Award winners

  • ASFP Installation: Coopers Fire, Battersea Power Station. An installation of 86 fire and smoke curtains. This involved re-design and bespoke engineering of seven FireMaster Concertina curtains of 25m width and 12m height in straight sections to meet the project requirements.
  • Passive Fire Protection Innovation: Fire Protection Ltd, FPLHV. This fire-resisting high voltage cable enclosure offers unparalleled insulation performance at high temperatures. Prefabricated in modular section to ease installation, the cables are fitted to the lid section and connected via internal channels, before the closing underside is fitted to fully enclose the cables.
  • Marketing Campaign: Minster. The ‘Spread the Word’ campaign focused on heightening awareness of Minster’s passive fire protection (PFP) range. The drive successfully stimulated interest and delivered unprecedented levels of sales of Minster PFP products.
  • Best Customer Service: Quelfire for its commitment to raising awareness of PFP through technical support, social media outreach and training initiatives, including the development of the Quelfire Knowledge Hub.
  • Training and Development of the Year: Alec Purdie, Quelfire. Having joined Quelfire in early 2020 with no prior fire industry knowledge, Alec quickly completed the IFE level 3 training, passing the IFE exam in 2022. He was accepted into membership of the IFE at Technician level and continues to maintain his CPD learning .He also conducts training for Quelfire customers.
  • Highest Engagement of the Year: Siderise for its steadfast support and participation in many of the ASFP activities such as events, marketing campaigns and training.
  • Individual Rising Star: Molly Callaway, TBL Fire Protection. Molly’s professionalism, eagerness to learn and enthusiasm for the industry was quickly apparent resulting in TBL identifying her for their Management Training Programme.
  • Lifetime Contribution: Carl Atkinson. Carl was the founder of FSi and served a six year term as vice Chair, Chair and Past Chair of the ASFP. The award recognises his commitment to the ASFP and his lifelong dedication to developing the passive fire sector, raising standards and improving the quality of PFP products and systems.
  • Advocate of the Year: Will Pitt of Laing O’Rourke for his dedication to the industry and commitment to the improvement of standards through work, such as the Passive Fire Knowledge Group of which he is one of the founding members.
  • Academic Accomplishment Awards for achieving the highest marks in the 2022 IFE PFP exams went to Rhea Akiens of Saint Gobain for Level 2 and Malcolm Williams of Quelfire for Level 3.

IFSJ Exclusive: Quelfire talks firestopping compliance

IFSJ spoke to Craig Wells, Sales Director at Quelfire, to discuss firestopping compliance

Tell me a little about Quelfire?

Quelfire is a manufacturer and supplier of passive fire protection with a primary focus on service penetration seals. We were established in 1977 as a family business and are still family[1]managed today. Since then, we have grown into one of the key providers of passive fire protection solutions and influencers of the market. Along with the products we manufacture and distribute, we put a huge emphasis on both technical support and education.

The culture within the organisation is very much: If we’ve got a tested solution we can sell it, if we don’t then we have to walk away. A large proportion of our annual investment goes into testing our products to achieve a larger scope of application based on feedback from our customers and the industry at large.

We supply specialist fire stop contractors, main contractors, builders, and all the trades in between – from dry-lining contractors to mechanical electrical contractors, anyone with an interest in passive fire protection we’re willing to engage with.

What exactly is firestopping compliance and why is it important?

Building regulations Approved Document B essentially states that all gaps and all penetrations must be suitably sealed. Compliance as a minimum is meeting the requirements of Approved Document B: to install and maintain products which have been tested to the correct standard for the particular application.

 It is important because it quite literally saves lives. A lot of people will be familiar with the Stay Put policy. There has been some criticism around that because of the events at Grenfell, but the policy is effective if the compartmentation is maintained using the correct products, installed in the correct way.

What recent developments have you seen around compliance?

The Grenfell Tower fire first raised the issue of compliance and consequently, this has raised the standards the industry must work to. The Building Safety Act, which received Royal Assent in April, has changed things certainly from the main contractor perspective. We hope this will continue. Fire stopping has historically been regarded as one of the smaller value packages that is implemented on a project towards the end. They will build walls and floors, run all the services through and then ask the fire stopper to come and firestop using the products.

What we’re seeing now is a change in the right direction. People are asking: what do we want to build, how do we want to build it, and is there a tested solution available. They’re now identifying the tested solution, working out what the parameters of that test evidence are and designing around it. The key thing then is sticking to the plan as we move through the installation stage.

There are some very positive changes which are being spring boarded by the introduction of the Building Safety Act, but also just a strong desire within organisations to do the right thing and we are glad to support this.

What should be done to improve compliance throughout the design and installation process?

The buzzwords, and rightly so, are early engagement and cross-party communication. These have got to be encouraged. The fire stop itself is only ever as good as the installation, as the substrate that it’s installed into, and as the actual services that are installed. You’ve got dry liners, mechanical contractors, electricians – maybe other specialist installation trades as well as the wall manufacturers and installers. All these things directly impact the effectiveness of the whole system, so it is important that we’re bringing everyone together at an early stage and designing the building using the tested solutions that are available.

How can parties work together to ensure compliance?

An early engagement meeting is critical. We get everyone together on the same page right from the start, making sure that everyone is involved from the early stages so there are no hiccups along the way. It requires regular meetings with all parties as the slightest change from one party could have quite a massive impact on another. There are also practical steps that we can take, such as Toolbox Talk training sessions. These are on-the-job training sessions conducted by manufacturers like ourselves.

The construction industry can be fairly complacent in terms of thinking that everyone is competent. If we take simple things like installing putty pads into electric socket boxes – you’ve got a qualified electrician that’s used to wiring up socket boxes and is then being asked to put a fire stopping device into the socket. It’s not hard to install a putty pad, but does that individual know why they are installing it? Do they just think it’s a gasket and regard it as a nuisance getting in the way of their wiring? Or do they understand that this is a life[1]safety critical element?

The other suggestion is to install physical sample walls. What you establish at that stage is exactly what is expected in terms of the installation; the writing can be on the wall in terms of expectations. From then on it becomes the benchmark. Anyone onsite can see what’s expected and can measure their work against this benchmark. There can also be that cross-party scrutiny, where one party can say ‘shouldn’t X be doing this because that’s what the demo wall shows?’

How do you make sure that the correct products are being installed?

 By promoting the message that help is available. Competency is knowing what you don’t know and it is really important for people to understand that there are manufacturers and system suppliers like ourselves who are willing to help and provide support. People should not think that they have to go it alone.

Technical support services in the construction industry have tended to be an email address that is monitored once every couple of weeks. We aim to respond to emails within one working day. People should understand that help is available and it’s not wrong to not know the answer to your solution.

There are people out there that can support you and provide you with an evidence-based solution. This has been a challenge in the industry – people have been afraid to go into the level of detail that’s required at an early stage because they think it is going to be hard work to get it out of the manufacturer. But, as I say, things are changing and for us that is one of the main reasons why persons choose to work with us along with our huge, tested scope of application of products.

Quelfire is hosting a panel discussion at London Build this month*, what is its focus and why should people attend?

The discussion is called ‘The Journey to Achieving Fire Stopping Compliance’. There are two strands to the journey aspect of it. One is understanding that it is a journey – from the early stages working out what is needed to achieve compliance and then the various stops along the way which need to be introduced to ultimately achieve compliance at the end of the project.

The other side is that for a lot of people, this is a massive cultural change, and cultural change does not happen overnight. There has been a historic attitude of ‘leave it to the end, leave it to the installers’ but really to achieve compliance it is a case of ‘take control and work out what’s needed, and dictate to the relevant people that this is what we need along the way.’

The discussion will focus on the importance of early engagement, designing the building using tested solutions and all the steps and tools that can be used along the way to make sure that all the parties are aligned and, ultimately, the building is constructed compliant and safe. We’ll also touch on the things that can be done to meet the requirements of the changing legislation and the emphasis on the Golden Thread.

Rhino Engineering Group announces commercial partnership with Jewers Doors

Rhino Engineering Group and Jewers Doors have announced the launch of a new partnership which will see Rhino proactively selling Jewers’ Phoenix range of insulated sliding and sliding/folding doors.

The Phoenix range will sit as complementary to Rhino’s existing range of products and provide its customers with the ability to source a wider choice of doors, with different ratings and capabilities, from a single source.

This new partnership will see Rhino selling three doors from the Phoenix range – Osprey, Swift and Kingfisher – and branding these as Rhino-SFI, Rhino-FI and Rhino-SI, respectively. Rhino-SFI will be the sliding/folding variant, while Rhino-FI and Rhino-SI will be bi-folding and sliding only, respectively.

As part of this new agreement, Rhino Site Systems Limited, the in-house door installation and maintenance wing of Rhino Engineering Group, will also become an approved installer for the Phoenix door range.
