According to Gore, the GORE-TEX CROSSTECH Endure Moisture Barrier was tested to withstand 25 wash/dry cycles and five convective heat exposures, exceeding standard requirements by a factor of 2.5.

The manufacturer said the Endure model is intended to support heat stress management through a balance of breathability and durability across various firefighting environments.

The Prime Moisture Barrier is described by Gore as being designed to support core temperature regulation, with a focus on breathability and comfort under sustained conditions.

Gore stated that the Prime barrier meets both NFPA 1970 (71) and EN 469 standards and is a component recognised for certification by garment makers.

The Innovate Moisture Barrier, the company explained, was developed for departments seeking to align with optional requirements on PFAS content.

According to Gore, the barrier has a total fluorine concentration of no more than 100 PPM and is engineered to resist penetration by fluids and common chemicals listed in NFPA guidance.

Existing CROSSTECH products remain in portfolio

Gore confirmed that the new products are being added to the existing CROSSTECH range rather than replacing current models.

The GORE-TEX CROSSTECH PARALLON Liner System, also part of the product family, is intended to maintain thermal protection even when firefighting garments are saturated with moisture.

Gore said the PARALLON system is highly breathable and performs effectively when exposed to sweat and ambient wetness.

The manufacturer also continues to offer the GORE-TEX CROSSTECH Black Moisture Barrier, which it said is currently used by several major metropolitan fire departments in the United States.

It added that this barrier has been selected due to its documented breathability and long-term material consistency.

The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has reported that safety shoes sold via TikTok have been recalled following concerns over product safety and regulatory non-compliance.

According to the BSIF, the shoes were advertised as offering protection against impact and penetration but had not undergone conformity assessment and lacked CE or UKCA marking.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) confirmed that the footwear did not meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 or the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018.

The shoes were removed from TikTok after enforcement action by the OPSS, prompted by product safety consultant Lewis Collantine, who raised the alert.

Despite the recall, the BSIF said similar footwear remained available for purchase on other online marketplaces, including Temu.

TikTok-listed shoes failed required safety assessments

The product, listed under various promotional names on TikTok, was described as “anti-smash” and “anti-puncture” but failed to meet basic testing standards, the OPSS said.

The regulator stated: “The product presents a serious risk of injuries because although advertised as ‘anti-smash’ and ‘anti-puncture,’ there is no evidence it has undergone conformity assessment as PPE and it is not CE or UKCA marked.”

It added: “The product does not meet the requirements of the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on Personal Protective Equipment or the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018.”

BSIF CEO Alan Murray said: “No surprises here. The BSIF has been aware of a burgeoning volume of substandard footwear available on platforms such as TikTok for some time, but we are pleased to see Trading Standards take action and we must applaud the work of Lewis Collantine, who has been instrumental in bringing this example to light.

“This is exactly why the new Product Safety and Metrology Bill needs to ensure there are real ramifications for online suppliers who fail to provide properly certified products.

“Employers and users deserve confidence that PPE described as protective genuinely meets standards and offers the protection it claims.”

Personal purchases and employer responsibility

The BSIF stated that many of the recalled products may have been purchased by individuals who were given PPE allowances but lacked knowledge of safety certification requirements.

Alan Murray added: “We suspect that many of these products are being bought personally by workers – including limb (b) workers who are not direct employees but for whom employers still have a legal duty to provide PPE under recent updates to the PPE Regulations.

“These individuals are often given a budget to buy their own PPE but may not fully understand the regulations or certification requirements surrounding safety products.

“The reality is that substandard PPE advertised as protective simply does not protect workers, and it can put lives at risk.”

BSIF surveillance reveals ongoing safety failures

BSIF market monitoring has found that substandard PPE remains widespread in the UK market.

Roy Wilders, BSIF Registered Safety Supplier Scheme Manager, said: “Year in, year out, the BSIF’s market surveillance shows there is an alarming volume of substandard PPE available to buy and in use in the UK.

“Our latest statistics show a shocking 90% failure rate for products we bought and tested from non-registered suppliers.

“This is in stark contrast to products from BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers, where almost 90% of products passed all the test criteria – and in the very few instances where discrepancies arose, they were immediately addressed and rectified.”

BSIF urges use of registered safety suppliers

The BSIF has reiterated the need for end users and employers to purchase PPE only from BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers to ensure compliance and safety.

The organisation said that these suppliers commit to providing properly tested, certified products in line with relevant PPE regulations.

It also noted that the Registered Safety Supplier Scheme aims to help employers and individuals identify suppliers who meet expected safety and quality standards.

East Providence equips entire department with PFAS-free turnout gear

The East Providence Fire Department in Rhode Island has become the first in the United States to outfit all firefighters with turnout gear free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The initiative was carried out in partnership with Fire-Dex and Milliken & Company and funded by a $658,000 investment from the City of East Providence.

The department received 170 sets of gear, providing each of its 125 full-time firefighters with one full new set.

According to Fire-Dex, the new gear includes Milliken Assure, a non-halogenated, non-PFAS moisture barrier introduced in October 2024.

The development comes as Rhode Island legislation H.B. 5019, which bans intentionally added PFAS in firefighting gear, was signed into law on 10 June 2025.

Turnout gear designed without fluorinated chemicals

Fire-Dex explained that the new gear marks a full transition to PFAS-free materials across all three layers of protection: the outer shell, thermal liner and moisture barrier.

While non-fluorinated options already existed for outer shells and liners, moisture barriers have traditionally depended on fluorinated compounds.

Milliken Assure was described by Fire-Dex as the first viable alternative that met all required safety and performance standards for moisture barriers.

The company confirmed that the new gear is certified by UL and compliant with NFPA 1971-2018.

According to Fire-Dex, performance and safety tests were conducted to verify durability and protection levels without the use of fluorochemical technologies.

Fire-Dex reported the rollout as part of a $658,000 investment by the City of East Providence.

The gear includes Milliken Assure, a PFAS-free, flame-resistant moisture barrier.

Each of the city’s 125 full-time firefighters has received one new set of gear.

The delivery consists of 170 total sets of turnout gear.

Fire-Dex confirmed the new gear is UL certified and complies with NFPA 1971-2018.

The gear eliminates fluorinated chemicals from all three protective layers.

Rhode Island’s H.B. 5019 prohibits PFAS in turnout gear from 1 January 2027.

The law was signed on 10 June 2025.

The department’s adoption supports early compliance with the upcoming ban.

Fire-Dex and Milliken collaborated with the department beginning in early 2024.

Rescue Intellitech has announced the launch of new PPE drying cabinets for the UK fire and rescue sector.

The Swedish manufacturer said the drying cabinets support decontamination efforts by safely and quickly drying protective gear after cleaning, reducing the risk of firefighters using damp equipment.

The company said the equipment is already in use across Europe and the US and will be shown in the UK at the Blue Light Show in London Olympia on 18 and 19 June 2025.

Rescue Intellitech reported that fire and rescue services including Buckinghamshire and Avon currently use its existing Solo Rescue and DeconWasher Pro S decontamination machines.

According to the company, the new cabinets complement these machines by completing the cleaning cycle with a purpose-built drying process.

Two sizes available to suit fire station needs

Rescue Intellitech stated that the drying cabinets are available in two sizes: the larger DC20 and the smaller DC8.

The company noted that both versions use non-mechanical, energy-efficient drying methods to prevent wear and extend the lifespan of PPE.

It added that the interior and exterior of equipment is dried simultaneously, meaning SCBA, gloves, helmets and boots are made operational faster.

According to the manufacturer, the cabinets are configurable for various types of kit and have both automatic and manual drying programmes.

It said each cycle ends with a cooling mode to allow PPE to be handled immediately after drying.

According to Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the new kit has been distributed to stations across Kent and Medway in advance of summer, when wildfire incidents increase.

The fire and rescue service stated that the PPE is designed to offer greater comfort and protection during high-heat outdoor operations.

Traditional PPE used for structural fire protection is heavier and less breathable, the organisation noted.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service explained that the new design aims to lower the risk of injury and reduce heat-related fatigue in firefighters.

New equipment rollout follows national wildfire increase

Kent Fire and Rescue Service stated that the PPE rollout follows a wider national trend of increasing wildfire incidents.

Between January and April 2025, the UK recorded 460 wildfires, compared with 240 in the same period of 2022, the service said.

The organisation reported that its own crews have responded to 160 wildfire incidents across Kent and Medway in the past three years.

According to the fire and rescue service, most of these incidents were accidental.

In August 2022, during extreme heat, Kent firefighters attended 69 wildfires in a single month.

The project will focus on how ill-fitting PPE, designed primarily for men, may increase the risk of injury for women across various work settings in Africa.

The research will include data gathering, demonstrations, simulations and community campaigns to raise awareness about anthropometric differences and their impact on safety.

Research will address risks linked to poorly fitted PPE

NEBOSH explained that PPE is considered the last defence against occupational hazards, and if it does not fit correctly, it can endanger the user.

The organisation stated that issues such as oversized clothing causing entanglement, loose footwear increasing the likelihood of slips, and poorly fitted headwear failing to provide adequate protection, are among the concerns that the project aims to address.

The study is expected to provide insights into the health and safety needs of African women and promote more inclusive PPE design.
