“Since this project, we have now installed Cygnus SmartNet into over a dozen of our sites at LiveWest.”

Cygnus said the system is now being considered for other residential schemes operated by the housing association.

Training provided through Cygnus Academy

Cygnus confirmed that training is required for all SmartNet installers.

The company said its training courses are offered at either the Cygnus Academy in Hereford or the Technology and Training Centre in Birmingham.

Wilkinson said: “All eight of our installers at Advanced Fire Protection SW are certified with the basic training programme. A couple of us have also completed the advanced training course.

Digital features improve safety and efficiency

Siemens reported that the newly installed Sinteso detectors were tailored to the specific challenges of custodial environments.

The devices distinguish between real fire signals and misleading triggers such as dust or steam, reducing unnecessary evacuations and disruptions.

The manufacturer added that the detectors also self-test automatically and generate real-time diagnostic data accessible both on-site and remotely.

According to Siemens, these features minimise the need for in-person inspections in restricted areas and support maintenance planning across hard-to-access zones, including high atriums.

In addition to the detector upgrade, Siemens deployed the Sinteso Connect app, enabling authorised prison staff to monitor fire system status from any location and make early decisions during incidents.

Digital logbooks and remote data access support staff

Siemens confirmed that the system now includes a digital eLogbook, automatically recording fire events and maintenance activity with time-stamped entries.

The company said the system reduces administrative burdens and improves access to compliance records for authorised users.

All prison facilities are now connected to Siemens’ Building X platform, which provides a centralised dashboard for live and historical fire system data.

Wireless fire alarm supports safety during hospital refurbishment

Cygnus has reported that its wireless fire detection system SmartNet-100 has been installed at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

The project was carried out by Shield Fire & Security during a refurbishment programme that required removal of the site’s previous wired alarm due to asbestos works.

SmartNet-100 was selected because it is a fully wireless, EN 54 certified solution that did not require hardwired interfaces or expanders.

According to Shield Fire & Security, the system allowed for uninterrupted progress with the asbestos works while maintaining full fire detection capability.

The full installation was completed in three days.

Coordinated installation completed without disruption

Shield Fire & Security stated that the hospital remained operational throughout the installation.

The company coordinated with Tilbury Douglas, the site administrators, to ensure no disruption to hospital staff or patients.

The works were divided into two phases: one day to install the system on the ground floor, and two days for the first floor, which covered a larger area.

Lee German, Life Safety Systems Manager at Shield Fire & Security, said: “The nature of this install necessitated a wireless solution, and as one of the very few truly wireless fire solutions on the market, choosing Cygnus was an obvious choice.”

He added:
“It was our first time installing SmartNet and we were extremely impressed by both the speed and ease of installation.
We highly recommend SmartNet, it has become our preferred wireless solution.”

System built for small to mid-scale projects

Cygnus described the SmartNet-100 system as suitable for small to medium scale buildings.

It operates using a wireless mesh network of radio devices, and features self-forming, self-healing network technology with multiple communication paths.

According to the manufacturer, SmartNet-100 can be up to 20 times faster to install than wired systems.

It includes several of the same functions as the larger SmartNet-Pro system but is designed for simpler deployments.

Fire detection coverage across both floors

SmartNet-100 was installed across the hospital’s ground and first floors.

According to Cygnus, the ground floor installation included 18 heat detectors and 10 manual call points.

On the first floor, 16 heat detectors and three manual call points were added.

Output modules and sound bases were also deployed across both floors to complete the alarm system coverage.

Installer training and future plans

Shield Fire & Security staff completed both basic and advanced training at the Cygnus Academy to qualify as certified installers.

The company said that due to the installation’s success, more of its personnel will attend future training courses to become Cygnus Certified Installers.

Kevin Oliver, Project Manager at Tilbury Douglas, said: “As a busy live hospital, it was imperative that the building could continue to operate as normally and as safely as possible.”

Fire protection upgrade supports expanded Macau waste facility

FireDos has reported that its remote-controlled M2 firefighting monitors have been installed at the Macau Waste Incineration Plant following a capacity expansion completed in August 2024.

The installation is part of a fire protection system upgrade for the plant’s third construction phase, located in the Pac On area of Taipa, Macau.

The facility processes municipal solid waste and converts thermal energy into electricity.

FireDos said the customer requested FM-approved, explosion-proof electric monitors with wireless remote control and a control cabinet.

The company supplied four M2-AC400-50 monitors with multi-purpose nozzles via Shanghai Vision Mechanical Joint Co., Ltd.

Equipment designed for explosion-prone environments

FireDos stated that all monitors and control components are FM-certified and ATEX-approved.

It explained that explosion protection is critical in incineration facilities due to the presence of combustible gases and fine dusts.

The company noted that each M2 fire monitor can deliver up to 2,500 litres per minute and supports both hollow jet and spray jet discharge through a stepless nozzle adjustment.

According to FireDos, the system is electrically operated and centrally managed, with water piping, cabling and control cabinets installed above the waste bunker.

It added that all four monitors are controlled via radio remote to allow simultaneous and precise operation.

Fire monitor placement ensures full coverage of pit

The monitors were installed in pairs on opposite sides of the incinerator’s garbage pit, at a height of 23 metres.

FireDos stated that this positioning allows the water streams to reach any area within the pit simultaneously.

The company said this arrangement improves the effectiveness and consistency of the suppression system across the full volume of the waste bunker.

Commissioning required local and remote collaboration

FireDos reported that Shanghai Vision was responsible for the local implementation.

The company delivered a six-hour remote training session to Shanghai Vision’s technical personnel ahead of installation.

FireDos remained online during the commissioning days to assist with real-time troubleshooting and final adjustments.

It noted that additional customer requests for on-site service during commissioning created challenges that were resolved through coordination with the local team.

Project marks Phase III of long-running waste facility

The plant has been operating since 1992 and was previously expanded in 2008.

FireDos said the Phase III expansion increased the plant’s daily treatment capacity by 1,300 tonnes.

It added that the site now contributes further to the city’s waste-to-energy goals through improved energy recovery from combustion.

The company said its system was chosen to meet the customer’s specifications for a proven fire safety solution.
