North Wales Fire & Rescue voice support for Register My Appliance Week

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is supporting Register My Appliance Week (20-26 January 2025) and is urging all households to register these machines, small or large, to ensure their brands know where to find them.

Whether machines are newly-purchased, long-installed, have been acquired ‘nearly-new’ or second-hand, registration is needed to help ensure the longest possible safe lifespan.

According to research, households could be missing out on important safety information because they have yet to register over 40 million large appliances in use in their homes.

With an estimated 133 million fridges, washing machines and ovens in use in UK homes, nearly a third of household have never or rarely registered their large appliances, rendering them extremely hard to trace if a safety repair is ever needed.

Survey on household appliances

A new survey by OnePoll for the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) found that two thirds (68%) of baby boomers said they could not live without their washing machine, closely followed by Gen X (67%). Millennials differed, however, with 56% valuing equally their washer and fridge.

Inter-generational harmony was shown over the impact washing machines had on domestic life with more than half (58%) agreeing it was significant. High regard was also given to vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, fridges and freezers.

The survey by OnePoll also revealed products once considered luxury items are now regarded as everyday necessities by younger generations. Two thirds of Gen Z considered hair tongs, tumble dryers and air fryers as necessities rather than luxury items. By contrast, however, nearly half (47%) of Gen X (just two ‘generations’ older) consider the trusty tumble dryer an extravagance.

Just a few minutes well spent will ensure you can enjoy the machine’s perks without sacrificing safety.”

Recalls on home appliances are rare but issues with the equipment can develop over time and a simple, free in-home adjustment by a qualified engineer can ensure a longer and safer life for machines. But, unlike our cars for which logging details is mandatory, a vast number of these valuable possessions are still untraceable because they are unregistered.

Chemical cocktails created by cleaning products are impacting Londoners safety says Fire Brigade

By accidentally combining common household cleaners, Londoners are putting themselves at risk as they create dangerous chemical cocktails. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has highlighted how the combination of common cleaning products can trigger a chemical reaction and unleash dangerous fumes.

Since 2023, the LFB has responded to over 150 incidents involving cleaning chemicals that have triggered a dangerous reaction. Chemical incidents require the Brigade to deploy specially trained and equipped officers to identify and deal with these dangerous combinations. 

A chemical incident will trigger a larger response from the LFB, this is due to the need to send specialist hazardous material crews to the scene, alongside responding firefighters. These specialist crews are trained to identity the chemicals and the risk they pose.

The Fire Brigade’s Group Commander, Matt Hayward’s statement

The Fire Brigade’s Group Commander Matt Hayward, is warning Londoners to always read the labels and instructions on your cleaning products. He said: “Always follow the instructions on the container to ensure you are using your cleaning products safely. People often think that cleaning products will be twice as effective when mixed, but it can be a recipe for disaster.”

“If you do accidentally mix chemicals and start to feel unwell, make sure you leave your property immediately and stay out whilst you call 999 for assistance. We have crews that are trained and equipped to deal with these incidents, so we are ready to help if required.” 

Santosh’s story

In one incident highlighted by the LFB, Santosh Karma, an IT worker in Canary Wharf, was exposed to dangerous gases after mixing two common cleaning products. This caused a dangerous chemical reaction at his house in Plumstead, leading to the ambulance and LFB being called to the scene.

Santosh recalled: “I poured bleach into the wash basin, toilet and the bath. I then used a drain cleaner. The mixture then started to produce gases and as I continued cleaning the bathroom I began to have trouble breathing and started coughing. I opened the small bathroom window, but it didn’t help.

“After a few minutes I was struggling to breathe. I went to my bedroom, opened the window and hung out to breathe in fresh air. It was scary not being able to breathe properly and it felt like it was having a serious impact on my health. 

“When the ambulance crew arrived, there were firefighters in breathing apparatus too. I was surprised to see London Fire Brigade at our house, but the ambulance crews had called them. 

Santosh also commented on how important the firefighters presence where during the incident and what they did to ensure his home was a same environment again. He remembered how: “The firefighters checked the air quality in our house to make sure it was all ok for everyone to return inside. The ambulance crew took me to hospital for checks. I did some blood tests and fortunately everything was ok. “

Importance of body cameras

As a provider of enterprise security technology solutions, Motorola Solutions explored worker sentiment related to body cameras in its 2024 UK report on retail worker safety. It found that more than a quarter of workers have considered quitting their jobs due to safety concerns, about half of workers think body cameras could make them feel safer and the majority believe body camera recordings could aid in investigations. In the UK, where body cameras are more widely adopted, 70% said body cameras are effective in de-escalating dangerous situations.

`Building safety is being ignored by clients’ say the Building Engineering Services Association

Construction clients are failing to engage with the new building safety regime, according to research carried out by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA).

The Association used its regional meetings with members as ‘focus groups’ over a six-month period to gauge take-up of measures introduced under the Building Safety Act and awareness of roles, responsibilities and risks associated with the legislation, which has been in force since 2022.

Findings from the BESA report

The main finding was a lack of engagement from clients with BESA members reporting that not a single client had discussed compliance with them. They asserted that, far from seeing evidence of any significant culture change, the pressure to deliver projects faster and more cheaply was increasing at the expense of quality and safety.

Members from all UK regions confirmed that project decisions remained primarily driven by cost and speed, particularly by owners and developers whose buildings were not classified as ‘higher risk’ (HRBs). This confirmed the suspicion that most clients believe the Act only applies to this type of building.

The meetings followed in-depth research commissioned by BESA last year which revealed that, while awareness of the legislation was rising, contractors and clients were confused about their roles and responsibilities and there was little discernible change taking place.

BESA’s Director of Specialist Knowledge, Rachel Davidson’s statement

BESA’S Director of Specialist Knowledge, Rachel Davidson spoke out: “As there is currently very little enforcement of the legislation and, therefore, no apparent consequences, clients are still subjecting contractors to aggressive and sub-economic pricing.

“Not a single client has asked any of our members about compliance with the Act.  Tenders are still being won on lowest price and still being value engineered throughout the project on non-HRB works.

“Several contractors who insisted on applying more rigorous safety measures said they had been priced out of projects as a result.”

Davidson has called for a government driven public awareness campaign to improve client engagement.

BESA members and their consensus

The BESA meetings also confirmed that most clients erroneously considered the legislation to be a ‘Construction’ Safety Act i.e. aimed exclusively at the construction industry and did not, therefore, apply to those owning, managing and operating buildings throughout their lifecycle.

BESA members also expressed concern about the number of projects being delayed due to additional planning constraints exacerbated by severe shortages in local authority building control departments.

The need to pay for additional third-party testing to ensure building components meet the specification when operating as a system is another potential source of higher cost and project delays, the BESA meetings reported.

Davidson also discussed how : “The serious geographical divide with clear evidence that the further north you go the less awareness of and engagement with the legislation you find, particularly among clients.”

AMA Research’s survey

The industry-wide survey, carried out by AMA Research between May and September last year, reported that 88% of respondents showed some awareness of the Act with almost a third claiming to be fully aware. There were higher levels of awareness among BESA members than the industry as a whole, but detailed understanding of roles and responsibilities was found to be mixed and varied by building and project type.

Most contractors told researchers that the Act was only having a minimal impact on their businesses and just 9% reported making any significant changes to help them comply.

Compliance and legal understanding of the legislation were proving to be challenging for most industry businesses who told researchers they needed more training and a closer working relationship with the office of the Building Safety Regulator to embed the changes required to improve building safety.

Levels of awareness vary according to company size with larger organisations, both in terms of turnover and number of employees, shown to be more up-to-speed.

BESA Director of Specialist Knowledge, Rachel Davidson’s final thoughts

“Some firms have used the Act, and the wider post-Grenfell context, as an opportunity to re-set employees’ focus on what makes them good at their jobs and where they find deficiencies, to carry out more training,” added Davidson. “However, this is far from universal and access to appropriate training remains another key challenge for our sector and one that BESA is pursuing vigorously.”

She added that the industry needed clearer and simpler guidance to help them both apply the legislation measures to their own businesses and explain them to their clients. She also called for a closer and more productive relationship with the Regulator involving open channels of communication and a greater willingness to offer advice on how to comply with Act.

“Also, if the government is really serious about improving standards of safety and performance alongside its ambitious plans for construction growth, it must properly resource the Regulator and ensure that this potentially game changing legislation is fully enforced,” said Davidson.

AEI Cables says early partnering is key to solving legislation challenges

Early collaboration between project partners is an important first step to achieving smooth project completion under new legislation, says cable supplier AEI Cables.

The new Building Safety Act – introduced in October 2023 – makes new stringent requirements for higher-risk buildings which are those deemed to be of at least 18 metres in height or at least seven storeys containing at least two residential units.

The systems in these buildings powered by electrical cables – including smoke and heat extraction systems – assist fire services in firefighting and a safe evacuation in the case of life safety.

Building owners should now have their building safety regime in place and any occupied higher-risk buildings should be registered with the Building Safety Regulator.

We are dedicated to adapting our CALERA technology to enhance the safety and protection of firefighters by managing and monitoring heat exposure.

Our journey with CALERA technology started with a passion for improving athletic performance within the sports industry.

At greenteg, a Swiss-based sensor research and development company, we developed sensors that provide precise core body temperature data.

These sensors have helped athletes optimise their training and recovery, contributing to gold medals at the Olympics and victories in races around the world.

Witnessing the impact of our technology on elite athletes inspired us to explore applications with a broader social impact.

We recognised that tracking and detecting fluctuations in core body temperature could offer critical insights into a person’s physiological state.

This is particularly vital in professions like firefighting, where individuals are frequently exposed to extreme heat and stress.

Our goal became clear: to create a solution that empowers safety officers to make informed, life-saving decisions through timely alerts.

The limitations of traditional thermometers

One of the core problems we aimed to address with CALERA technology is the limitation of traditional thermometers.

Conventional devices are only reliable in stable indoor environments and often fail to provide accurate readings in extreme or fluctuating external conditions.

This inadequacy can have serious consequences in high-risk professions where precise temperature monitoring is essential.

Our solution involves an advanced system that provides continuous and accurate core body temperature readings.

CALERA integrates a highly sensitive thermal “heat-flux” sensor with a skin temperature sensor, supported by sophisticated algorithms.

This combination allows us to deliver precise measurements of core body temperature in real time, regardless of external conditions.

By measuring the thermal energy flow between the body and its surroundings, we effectively neutralise the impact of the environment, ensuring accuracy even in challenging conditions.

A focus on core body temperature

Our decision to concentrate on tracking core body temperature was driven by several key factors.

Core body temperature is one of the most crucial vital signs for assessing health.

From a young age, people instinctively check temperature as an indicator of illness—for example, when a mother feels her child’s forehead to check for fever.

Despite its importance, there were no non-invasive solutions available that could continuously and accurately monitor core body temperature outside controlled environments.

Wearable devices have become increasingly popular for health monitoring, yet they lacked the ability to measure core body temperature.

By integrating this capability, we addressed a significant gap in the functionality of wearables.

Accurate and continuous core temperature tracking has numerous applications across various fields, including occupational health, medical diagnostics, sports performance monitoring and scientific research.

Each of these areas benefits from precise temperature data to improve safety, health outcomes and performance analysis.

Enhancing firefighter safety

Firefighters face extreme heat strains due to their challenging work conditions.

They are exposed to intense heat from both fires and the sun and their protective gear, while essential for safety, prevents sweat evaporation and inhibits natural cooling.

Additionally, the physical exertion required in firefighting is comparable to that of professional athletes, adding to the heat strain.

CALERA technology offers several critical benefits to firefighters by providing real-time monitoring of their core body temperature while they are on duty.

By enabling early detection of dangerous temperature elevations, we allow for proactive measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.

This capability enhances the safety of firefighters, reduces the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke and ensures they remain effective in high-pressure situations.

Continuous exposure to high temperatures can strain the cardiovascular system over time, leading to chronic issues such as hypertension and atherosclerosis.

Statistics highlight the cardiovascular risks firefighters face:

  • The median age of first heart attack for firefighters is 49.
  • Although firefighting activities account for only 1% of their time, they account for approximately 32% of cardiac fatalities.
  • For every cardiac-related Line of Duty Death (LODD), there are approximately 25 non-fatal but life-altering cardiac events.

By adapting heat protocols based on accurate data provided by CALERA, we aim to better protect the long-term health of firefighters.

Additionally, our technology supports heat acclimatisation training, similar to that used by professional athletes.

This training can help firefighters build resilience to heat stress, enhancing their performance and safety on the job.

Real-world applications

We are currently in the pilot phase of using CALERA technology in firefighting scenarios, focusing on identifying the specific needs of fire departments to adapt our existing sports solution for this high-risk profession.

During a case study with the Rapperswil-Jona fire department in Switzerland, we monitored fresh cadets during their first week of training.

We detected that one cadet had a significantly higher core body temperature compared to the group.

During live fire training, this cadet had to be pulled out after only a few minutes and required medical attention.

This example underscores the importance of monitoring core body temperature, especially for cadets who may be unfamiliar with how their bodies respond to heat stress.

Several training centres have adopted CALERA technology, focusing on the safety of new cadets and instructors.

By continuously monitoring core body temperature, these centres can ensure the well-being of participants, preventing heat-related illnesses during rigorous training sessions.

Additionally, multiple fire departments have utilised CALERA monitors to research and evaluate the cooling properties of new turnout gear.

By assessing how different gear affects core body temperature, departments can make informed decisions about equipment that best protects firefighters from heat stress.

Integrating CALERA into existing safety systems

Integrating CALERA technology into existing safety systems for firefighting departments involves several key steps to ensure seamless and effective real-time monitoring and alerts.

We are collaborating with several major firefighter safety equipment providers to integrate our monitoring technology with their existing communication and alarm systems.

This integration will enable CALERA to provide real-time alerts and updates within the dashboards that firefighters already use, ensuring that vital temperature data is immediately accessible during operations.

Currently, we employ long-range Bluetooth routers to enable real-time monitoring of core body temperature on training grounds.

This technology allows continuous data collection and alerting for trainees and instructors, ensuring safety during intense training scenarios.

For operational settings, such as fire trucks, intermittent monitoring is used to maintain awareness of firefighters’ conditions.

To provide on-person alerts directly to firefighters, we also support the integration of CALERA with smartwatches.

This setup allows individual firefighters to receive immediate notifications about their core body temperature, enabling them to act if necessary to prevent heat-related issues.

Beyond firefighting, CALERA technology is utilised across sectors like sports, healthcare, sleep research and the military.

Athletes can use it to optimise training and recovery, with some achieving Olympic gold.

In healthcare, CALERA monitors fevers and biomarkers, enabling better patient management and earlier home care.

It also tracks circadian rhythms in sleep research, offering insights into patterns and potential neurodegenerative biomarkers.

And the military explores its use for monitoring personnel in extreme conditions, improving safety and performance.

Future developments and enhancements

We are continually working on developments and enhancements to further improve safety and performance in the firefighting industry.

An enhanced dashboard is in development, tailored to meet the specific needs of fire departments.

This new interface will provide intuitive access to real-time data and alerts, making it easier for safety officers to monitor and manage the well-being of their teams.

We are also focused on developing health protection protocols to protect the health of firefighters, specifically aiming to reduce the risk of cardiovascular incidents.

By leveraging continuous core temperature monitoring, these protocols will provide actionable insights to help manage and mitigate health risks associated with high-temperature environments.

In the coming years, I believe CALERA will have a significant influence on occupational health and safety by setting new standards for physiological monitoring in the workplace.

As more industries recognise the value of real-time health data, CALERA can lead the way in transforming how organisations approach worker safety.

By facilitating early interventions and promoting proactive health management, CALERA will contribute to healthier, safer work environments.

Mumbai high-rise fire reveals non-operational safety systems

Inspection reveals high-rise safety system failures

An inspection by the Mumbai Fire Brigade revealed critical safety deficiencies in a 22-storey high-rise in Dongri, Mumbai, a day after a fire broke out in the building.

Officials found the firefighting system was non-operational, and the building lacked a designated refuge area.

A senior fire brigade officer stated that the building’s management has been asked to provide structural plans, including those for firefighting systems and refuge areas, as mandated by Section 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.

The officer said: “A notice will be served to the building on Nov 28, if they are unable to produce the plans.”

Official response to the fire

Mumbai Fire Brigade officials confirmed that immediate measures are being taken to address the issue.

An official said: “Our teams reached the site and found that the fire systems were non-operational.

“We will issue a notice to the building, but have given them time to produce any documentation.”

Amin Patel, Congress MLA for the constituency, called for strict action against those responsible for the lapses.

He said: “The lives of people should be of utmost priority, and any kind of negligence should be dealt with strictly.

“I have already spoken to the authorities to ensure that such an incident isn’t repeated.”

Allegations of illegal construction

Shiv Sena Mahayuti candidate Shaina NC visited the site and raised allegations of illegal construction and safety negligence.

She said: “There is no parking or refuge area in the building.

“We insist on the registration of an offence by the jurisdiction police, Dongri Police, and DCP Zone 1 to take action against the builder and the nexus of illegalities and mafia involved.”

Shaina NC also highlighted the need for a detailed investigation into the lack of firefighting facilities, stating: “Because of such illegal construction, the lives of the poor people are at stake.”

Legislative safety requirements

Under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006, building owners and occupants are required to ensure fire safety measures are in place and operational.

Failure to comply with these regulations can result in notices, fines, and legal action.
