When it comes to creating a safe school environment, compromise is not an option. Architects, contractors and education facility managers must ensure building systems can communicate with clarity and speed when an emergency occurs in a school.  

Whether the threat is inside or outside, students and staff must be alerted as quickly as possible and must understand clearly what actions to take.

Effective emergency alert technology can help achieve this, especially systems that use a combination of visual and audio signals.

The challenge is that many schools currently use multiple systems for emergency communications, which can create problems and confusion. For example, a school might use separate systems for their fire alarms and school lockdown systems. The school lockdown system adds to maintenance overhead, and unlike a fire alarm system, there are no regulation-defined processes to ensure it is maintained and working correctly.  

Other schools may use fire alarm sounders or class change bells in the event of lockdown, which can cause confusion as to what actions students and staff need to take. The lack of clarity can also increase response times during emergency events. And, as with school lockdown systems, there are no current regulatory standards around which systems should be used for these events.  

At the same time, many contractors seek the installation simplicity and streamlined compliance of a single system solution rather than relying on separate fire alarm and lockdown systems. Likewise, architects want to reduce the different types of sounders and other devices located within classrooms and corridors. 

To simplify and safeguard their operations, architects, contractors and education facility managers should consider a single-system solution that can provide compliant fire detection as well as customisable lockdown alarms. Before upgrading, it is important to understand the current state of lockdown procedures and how a single-system solution offers advantages over a multi-system approach. 

Current state of lockdown procedures 

While fire alarm systems are well regulated and evacuation procedures are familiar to most, lockdown and invacuation procedures may be less familiar: 

  • Evacuation: Used during fire events or other emergencies that require students and staff to vacate the building, these alarms alert people to get out of the building safely. 
  • Lockdown: Necessary when there is an active threat on school grounds, such as a hostile force, a lockdown indicates that doors are locked and directs students to stay away from windows or conceal themselves until given a clear signal.  
  • Invacuation lockdown: This is a type of lockdown that indicates a safety risk outside school buildings but with no threat of entry. To prevent exposure to the risk, students remain in the building until the event has cleared. An invacuation might be trigged by a pollutant, fire, or chemical release nearby.  

There are no standards or defined regulations for invacuation lockdowns. Procedures for these situations are often based on a risk assessment and can differ from school to school. Education facility managers often develop invacuation lockdown procedures using best practices from the security and intrusion industry, such as PD 6662 or an equivalent, to activate and provide secure lockdown. The PD 6662 is a document created by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to provide guidelines for the installation, maintenance and operation of intruder alarm systems.  

In other situations, schools may look for solutions intended for the fire detection industry. For example, an addressable fire alarm system can handle, control and manage an invacuation lockdown.

Additionally, an invacuation lockdown system would benefit from the monitoring, integrity and reliability provided by the fire alarm standard BS 5839 for fire detection and alarm systems for buildings.

However, BS 5839 clearly states in clause 16.2.1 that fire alarm sounders should not be used for purposes other than warning of fire. Using the same sounders for other events can cause confusion and loss of critical time. There is also a risk that the system might not be maintained properly or may be altered, which could impact system integrity and compliance. As a result, schools would benefit from using separate sounders and speakers for invacuation lockdown systems. 

Novel strategy: A combined fire detection and lockdown system approach 

With these best practices in mind – and driven by industry demand – a new safe classroom strategy combines lockdown and fire detection technology. The solution uses a combined safety system for lockdowns and fire detection, functioning as a fire detection alarm, invacuation alarm, and class change notification. 

To comply with BS clause 16.2.1, the safe classroom solution uses a combination of red sounders for fire evacuation and white sounders for invacuation, lockdown and even class change. The sounders sit on the same physical loop but are programmed and administered separately. Because they are classified as part of the fire evacuation system, they offer the same high levels of integrity and safety. 

The alarm used in this solution is multi-sensory and customisable, providing options for both audio and visual alerts. With 16 different tones and two volume levels, schools can program this alarm to use different sounds for fire, evacuation, invacuation and class changes. System users can also choose from two flash rates. 

In addition, the safe classroom solution uses reflective sound and reflective light monitoring self-testing for both the fire and invacuation alarm at the same time. This allows system owners, rather than a third-party, to quickly and efficiently test that all sounders and beacons are functioning correctly. All testing is carried out at the panel for up to 20 seconds. 

A combined fire detection and lockdown system approach offers schools several benefits: 

  • Simplicity: A combined system decreases the number of components on the wall. One technician can install it and maintain it, reducing installation and maintenance costs. And, because the invacuation sounders sit on the fire alarm loop, it decreases the amount of cable needed.  
  • Clarity: The system issues clear and concise instructional messaging that directs occupants where to go and what to do, which results in less confusion and panic.  
  • Customisation: With a completely customisable human voice alarm, the combined system provides a better user experience, as well as increased engagement. 

Keeping students safe while they learn is among the highest priorities of any school campus. It’s critical that schools are equipped and prepared to handle a broad range of safety and security concerns. A compliant safe classroom system can quickly alert students to an emergency situation and clearly direct them to take the appropriate action.

Survitec’s Seahaven inflatable system reduces cruise vessel costs and saves space

Survitec report shows Seahaven reduces lifeboat space and supports new ship layouts

Survitec has published independent analysis confirming the benefits of its Seahaven inflatable lifeboat system for cruise vessels.

According to Survitec, the review was conducted by Foreship and focused on the system’s impact on deck space, operational efficiency and design flexibility.

The Seahaven Application Study examined how Seahaven can support cruise ship layouts by removing the need for traditional davit-launched lifeboats.

Seahaven allows reallocation of passenger vessel deck space

The study outlines how Seahaven uses less vertical and longitudinal space than conventional lifeboats.

This reduces overhang and improves bridge visibility, especially during transits such as the Panama Canal.

By freeing up this space, operators could reconfigure ship interiors to include more balcony cabins or expanded entertainment areas.

Survitec said this flexibility may increase potential revenue from ticket sales and improve the guest experience.

Capacity and safety compliance testing support SOLAS compatibility

Foreship’s capacity analysis reviewed how Seahaven meets the total number of people on board (POB) across various ship types.

It also compared Seahaven’s deployment mechanisms with traditional systems under SOLAS standards, including deployment at a 20-degree heel.

The report confirmed that medium-sized cruise ships could adopt Seahaven without needing major modifications.

Seahaven system reduces lifeboat complexity and training needs

Seahaven can evacuate up to 1,060 people in under 22 minutes using an automated system.

This eliminates davit-release mechanisms, simplifies life-saving appliance (LSA) management, and reduces crew training and maintenance costs.

The system has passed heavy weather testing in sea states above Beaufort Scale 6.

Seahaven can be deployed as a standalone system or as part of hybrid evacuation solutions using Marine Evacuation Systems and tender lifeboats.

According to Survitec, this adaptability makes Seahaven suitable for retrofitting as well as new vessel builds.

Zelim’s ZOE intelligent detection system aims to improve global search and rescue operations

The challenges facing search and rescue operations at sea

According to Zelim, current search and rescue (SAR) technologies are insufficient for detecting and rescuing people in the water.

A lack of reliable sensor integration and human error has resulted in low success rates, with only 19% of SAR responses involving persons in the water leading to life-saving outcomes.

Former US Coast Guard officer, Commander Matt Mitchell, highlighted these limitations during his tenure, overseeing the Coast Guard’s search and rescue planning systems.

Mitchell explained: “The core challenge we face is that search and rescue authorities simply don’t have the tools to detect and track persons in the water effectively.”

ZOE: A solution to long-standing problems

Mitchell’s involvement with Zelim started after his years of service with the USCG, where he observed the difficulties faced in integrating new sensor technologies.

During his career, he found that only three of the 20 sensor types used by the Coast Guard could be reliably integrated into search plans.

This gap, combined with the unreliability of human observers, spurred his interest in Zelim’s AI-powered detection system, ZOE.

ZOE is designed to continuously scan the water around a vessel using machine learning and computer vision, detecting persons in distress.

Mitchell explained: “ZOE doesn’t get tired, it doesn’t get distracted, and it doesn’t have the inherent variability of a human searcher.”

ZOE’s advantages over traditional SAR technologies

ZOE offers several key improvements over existing SAR technologies, particularly with its ability to detect and track persons in the water with high precision.

Unlike traditional systems, ZOE operates 24/7 and can work in poor visibility and harsh conditions.

It also provides the ability to monitor for persons falling overboard, pinpointing the exact time and location of such events.

“With ZOE, we know the precise time and location of the man overboard event,” Mitchell said.

“That gives us a fighting chance to get there in time and make the rescue.”

US Coast Guard validation and global adoption

Zelim’s ZOE system gained significant validation when the US Coast Guard partnered with the company to test its capabilities.

Mitchell played a key role in facilitating this partnership, collaborating with USCG personnel to refine the system for real-world operations.

Following extensive testing, the US Coast Guard recognised the potential of ZOE, which has now been integrated into their operations.

Mitchell’s goal is to expand the use of ZOE worldwide, leveraging his network of SAR contacts to promote its adoption.

He said: “This technology has the potential to revolutionize the industry, and I’m determined to make that a reality.”

As Zelim’s Director of Search and Rescue for the US and Asia-Pacific, Mitchell’s mission is to ensure that ZOE becomes a standard tool for search and rescue authorities around the world.

The technology’s ability to accurately detect persons in the water and integrate seamlessly into SAR systems could significantly improve rescue efficiency and save lives at sea.

“This is the biggest breakthrough in search and rescue since the advent of search theory back in 1946,” Mitchell asserted.

Milford Haven Port Authority pilots Zelim SWIFT system to boost UK maritime safety

Zelim’s SWIFT man-overboard recovery system trialled on pilot vessel

The Milford Haven Port Authority (MHPA) in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has fitted Zelim’s SWIFT man-overboard recovery conveyor to a 19-metre pilot vessel as part of a three-month trial.

This trial aims to evaluate the system’s capability in challenging sea conditions, a critical factor given the Port’s regular exposure to Atlantic swells.

According to Zelim, SWIFT was installed on the 2009-built Picton following a successful demonstration on the River Forth, Scotland, where “casualties” were swiftly retrieved within one minute.

Andy Tipping, Zelim’s Business Development Director, explained the MHPA’s intentions: “Demonstrations last year were a huge success, but the MHPA wanted to retrofit SWIFT to an operational vessel to validate its capability in heavy weather before making any procurement decisions.”

High sea testing results show positive outcomes

Initial testing results have shown SWIFT’s performance meets expectations even in 2.5-metre swells, some of the highest sea states encountered so far.

Tipping noted: “Picton has already trialled SWIFT in 2.5m swells, which is the most challenging sea condition we have encountered to date.

“It’s taken SWIFT to a new level, but it still performed very, very well, as we knew it would.”

These results reinforce the potential of SWIFT for applications in hazardous sea environments where pilot safety is crucial.

John Warneford, Assistant Harbourmaster at MHPA, highlighted the benefits of these trials: “These trials allow us to better understand how the technology can improve operational safety for our crews and pilots, but it also supports the rapid recovery of any person in the water.”

Potential integration into new pilot boats under construction

If the SWIFT system meets performance standards in this trial, MHPA may integrate it into a series of 22-metre pilot vessels currently being built.

The vessels, produced by Netherlands-based Next Generation Shipyards, are set for delivery next year.

This integration could enhance safety features for MHPA’s fleet operating in high-risk maritime conditions, particularly during pilot transfers, a task often carried out in adverse weather.

Pilot vessels serve a vital role in safe vessel boarding and departure operations, but they also come with inherent risks.

Tipping stated: “Pilot boats present a particular challenge to seafarers as they provide a vital service in the worst possible maritime conditions.” He added that SWIFT could significantly “set the benchmark high for crew safety.”

Presentation at UKMPA conference

Zelim and MHPA will present their findings and showcase the SWIFT system at the 136th annual conference of the UK Maritime Pilots’ Association (UKMPA).

The event, scheduled for 19-21 November in Harrogate, UK, will bring together UK harbourmasters and pilots to discuss maritime safety innovations.

The presentation will allow Zelim and MHPA to highlight the potential operational advantages of the SWIFT system.

SWIFT is a conveyor belt rescue technology approved by Lloyd’s Register, designed to rapidly recover people from the water by lowering the belt into the sea and pulling individuals to safety.

Sam Mayall, Zelim’s CEO, stated: “The clock starts ticking the moment someone falls overboard, so the faster you can get someone out of the water the greater the chances of recovering them safely and unharmed.”

The conference will provide a platform to demonstrate SWIFT’s practical application in high-risk settings.

Zelim, an Edinburgh-based maritime safety company, has partnered with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) in Canada to demonstrate its ZOE Intelligent Detection and Tracking system.

As reported by Zelim, the trials took place in British Columbia in September during the National SAREX 24 Search and Rescue exercise.

CASARA, a volunteer organisation involved in search and rescue missions, tested ZOE’s AI capabilities alongside drone technology to detect persons in the water.

The system was used in simulated search scenarios to improve detection accuracy, a key challenge in vast ocean areas.

ZOE’s AI improves search accuracy at sea

ZOE, developed in cooperation with the US Coast Guard, is designed to autonomously detect and track people and objects in real-time during sea rescues.

The system addresses common difficulties in locating individuals, including drifting, sea spray, and light glare, all of which affect human observation.

The trials involved drones scanning sections of the coastline, where ZOE detected mannequins placed on the sea surface to simulate victims.

ZOE successfully identified human figures while filtering out objects such as buoys and light reflections, reducing false detections.

Zelim sees positive results from SAREX 24 trials

Doug Lothian, Zelim’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “This is what makes ZOE special, the ability of the technology to not only detect but also discern the difference between a human and other objects on the sea surface.

Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of search operations, where speed and precision are critical.”

Zelim’s CEO, Sam Mayall, expressed satisfaction with the trial results and collaboration with CASARA and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), adding: “We’re thrilled to have been invited to participate in the Canadian National SAREX and to work with the teams from CASARA and the RCAF to demonstrate ZOE’s search capabilities in an operational search.”

For CASARA, ZOE represents a potential enhancement to their search and rescue (SAR) missions, which cover extensive and often challenging regions.

The organisation plans to continue working with Zelim to optimise the system for future deployments.

Bristow Group secures €100 million loan for Irish SAR operations

Bristow Group Inc. announced that its UK subsidiary, Bristow Leasing Limited, has entered into a new Export Development Guarantee term-loan facility.

This facility, totalling up to €100 million, is provided by National Westminster Bank Plc (NatWest) and guaranteed 80% by UK Export Finance (UKEF).

The funds will be used to support Bristow’s capital commitments related to the next generation of search and rescue (SAR) operations in Ireland.

Financial flexibility and growth in government services

Chris Bradshaw, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bristow, commented on the financing: “The proceeds from the UKEF Debt will enhance our financial flexibility as Bristow grows its leading government services business with the new Irish Coast Guard contract investments.”

Bristow’s obligations under the loan will be secured by five new-delivery Leonardo AW189 SAR-configured helicopters.

The loan will bear interest at a rate equal to the Euro Interbank Offered Rate (EURIBOR) plus 1.95% per annum.

On April 23, air ambulance crews from the Saudi Red Crescent conducted a life-saving operation for a man involved in a hit-and-run accident in the remote Al-Rawsan desert, northern Saudi Arabia.

Responding swiftly to a distress call received via the 997 emergency hotline, the medical team reached the crash site within a remarkably short time.

Details of the rescue operation

The helicopter dispatched to the scene played a crucial role in the rescue operation.

Within just 10 minutes of the call, the crew managed to stabilize the injured man and transport him to Prince Mutaib bin Abdul Aziz Hospital in Skaka.

The rapid response and expert handling of the situation by the medical team ensured that the patient received immediate care, which was vital for his survival and recovery.

Current status of the injured man

The hospital has reported that the man is currently in a stable condition and continues to receive the necessary medical care.

Digital solutions have had an amazing effect on rescue operations, especially after COVID.

These solutions have become essential and vital.

We at WEBER have been proactive in this area, working on digital transformation for several years, not merely reacting to customer requests.

For instance, we’ve developed solutions that allow for remote monitoring of equipment, providing information on its status, location, and maintenance needs.

This is incredibly helpful for back-office operations, especially in terms of budgeting and maintenance planning, which are critical aspects for Civil Defense.

Our approach includes offering comprehensive solutions that encompass operational and training aspects.

We’re actively partnering with local Civil Defense in the Middle East, and this collaboration is already showing positive results.

We organise major events like ‘Rescue Days,’ which are among the biggest in the rescue field globally.

These events have drawn over 750 participants from 25 different nations, including the Middle East and Australia.

The skills and approaches of personnel in the Middle East are particularly noteworthy.

Part of my role is to introduce them to different mindsets and techniques, especially in emerging areas like e-mobility.

We are actively engaged in providing digital solutions for e-learning.

Our current platform is a modular one, designed to offer a variety of learning modules.

It enables us to offer training remotely, which has become increasingly important, especially with the constraints imposed by lockdowns.

This capability allows control centres or headquarters to generate reports on equipment status without the need for on-site visits, enhancing efficiency and resource management.

A significant aspect of our approach to sustainability is reflected in our equipment, particularly the Smart Force and battery-operated tools.

These are upgraded with Milwaukee batteries, a notable feature for sustainability.

The advantage here is the ease of local procurement of batteries, eliminating the need for direct contact with WEBER for battery replacement.

This makes our products not only user-friendly but also aligns with our non-restrictive policy on system and service access.

Mary Cablk of the Desert Research Institute discusses the crucial role of search and rescue dogs in fatal fire response

Can you tell me about your journey working with dogs?

My involvement in search and rescue was deeply personal; a team in Zion National Park once saved a close friend’s life.

This incident ignited a keen interest in the incredible capabilities of dogs, especially their unparalleled detection abilities.

Over the span of a decade, I orchestrated an expansive research initiative.

We began with a simple yet vital question: Could dogs effectively detect live desert tortoises? Our research didn’t just stop there; it broke ground and set the foundation for what would become a global movement.

Today, conservation and contraband dogs operate worldwide, detecting a myriad of items ranging from plants, moulds, to various animals.

In the early stages, this journey wasn’t without its challenges.

Many were sceptical, often dismissing the idea out of concerns that dogs might be a threat to wildlife.

However, with perseverance and documented success, we changed many perceptions.

Parallel to my research, I was becoming involved in search and rescue.

Here, I invested time in training, certifying, and deploying my own canine for various missions.

This hands-on experience enriched my understanding and skills, leading me to collaborate with renowned trainers from all corners of the globe.

My work has given me the privilege to share insights on canine research internationally.

How are dogs selected for intense training and search missions?

When selecting dogs for search missions, we consider a broad spectrum of breeds, not just the traditional ones like German Shepherds, Labradors, Retrievers, or Border Collies.

With missions varying in environments globally, we need dogs with specific innate characteristics that suit each mission’s unique demands, which sometimes leads us to look beyond the usual breeds.

For search and rescue or recovery tasks, the ideal dogs are medium-sized.

Too large, and they may not operate efficiently, while being too small poses its own challenges – hence, you won’t find Chihuahuas in search and rescue roles.

Predominantly, we deploy breeds like Labradors, Retrievers, Border Collies, Malinois, and German Shepherds.

The key quality we seek is “drive” or a strong motivation.

Contrary to what the public might think, these dogs are motivated by play rewards rather than affection for humans or their handlers.

Essentially, when these dogs perform correctly, their reward is a fun play session, with handlers essentially acting as their toy caddy.

What’s unique about training dogs for fire scenes vs. other search missions?

Training dogs for fire scenes is distinct due to the unique challenges posed by post-fire environments.

In places like California, where fire seasons have become the norm, we’ve evolved our training and deployment strategies, especially after lessons learned from the 2018 Camp Fire which revealed that some traditional methods could be detrimental.

The aftermath of a fire is fraught with hazards: residual heat with potential hotspots that can remain at high temperatures, lingering harmful chemicals dispersed as particles, and the risks posed by re-aerosolised contaminants when disturbed.

While handlers wear protective gear, dogs don’t.

Covering their faces would impede their primary asset: their sense of smell.

And while booties might protect their paws from hot surfaces, they hinder the dogs’ ability to grip slick surfaces and dissipate heat as dogs sweat through their paws.

Moreover, dogs’ proximity to the ground puts them at a greater risk of inhaling contaminants, not to mention the hazardous smoke.

Yet, despite these challenges, their olfactory abilities are astounding.

They can navigate through thick smoke and still detect their target scent.

Over time, we’ve perfected techniques to decontaminate dogs, minimising their exposure to harmful residues.

Is it difficult to find human remains?

Walking through the footprint of a burnt site can disrupt and inadvertently damage potential evidence, making identification and recovery of remains more challenging.

 It’s essential to approach these sites with caution.

Instead of walking through and potentially causing more harm, we often analyse the footprint from the outside.

Through experience and data collection from fires, there is predictability in where remains are most likely to be located

We train our dogs to pinpoint the presence of individuals from outside, allowing them to enter safely if necessary.

This requires specialised training, as dogs must work at a distance from their handler and approach remains delicately.

The remains can be extremely fragile, and in cases where multiple individuals are found together (commingling), the separation of remains is critical to ensure each individual is returned to their respective families.

Disturbing the site can mix the remains of separate individuals, complicating the work for forensic anthropologists.

Beyond the mere retrieval of remains, families often seek understanding.

They desire knowledge about their loved ones’ last moments: their location, actions, and whether they were aware of what was happening.

How do you ensure dogs’ mental health given their challenging missions?

Dogs don’t perceive their finds emotionally as humans do; they don’t understand the concept of human remains.

Instead, they’re enthusiastic and excited about the task.

What matters most for their wellbeing is the opportunity to succeed.

Continual searches without discoveries aren’t saddening for them, but they aren’t reinforcing either.

It’s essential to ensure they regularly make “finds” and are rewarded.

Many dogs would persist in their tasks longer than advisable because they’re so driven.

Our role is to ensure their health, hydration, nutrition, safety, and provide necessary rest.

They might be relentless, but they’re not robots, and we must recognise when it’s time for them to rest.

Have dog training methods evolved?

There’s been a shift in understanding the necessity of training dogs on burned remains.

Previously, standard cadaver dogs were deployed, but it became apparent that the varied states of burned remains presented unique challenges.

The spectrum of burned remains can range from slightly charred bodies to calcification, where only a trained expert could identify the ash-like remains.

While the exact odour profile of burned human remains isn’t fully understood, dogs have demonstrated an ability to detect them.

Specialised training enhances their success rate.

How crucial is the handler-dog bond, and how do you strengthen it?

The handler-dog bond is crucial, but its nature varies among handlers.

It’s essential for dogs to trust their handlers, especially when entering dangerous or unfamiliar situations.

However, an overly dependent dog can’t effectively do its job.

While we guide them on where to search, they must be confident and independent enough to execute the task without constant encouragement.

We are their teammates, not their cheerleaders.

Can you share a memorable rescue story involving a canine?

During the outbreak of the Butte fire in California, I had the opportunity to work with my recently certified Malinois.

Even though she was a young and relatively inexperienced dog, her training prepared her for this moment.

We were tasked with searching various burned structures, and while inspecting one particular site, she gave a clear indication of a final response, suggesting the presence of human remains.

At the same time, an emergency occurred: another handler’s dog had accidentally fallen into a hidden sewer tank due to a wooden cover that had been destroyed by the fire.

Addressing this situation was our immediate priority.

After ensuring the other dog’s safety, I alerted the detectives to my dog’s indication.

They were initially sceptical, as there were no visible signs of any remains.

I persisted, pointing out the circumstances: the resident of the house was known to have limited mobility, their car was still in the driveway, and all other signs suggested they hadn’t left before the fire.

Given this evidence and my dog’s strong indication, the detectives agreed to a more thorough investigation.

Upon closer examination and with the assistance of a forensic anthropologist, it was confirmed that the remains of the individual were present, but they were reduced to a state of almost complete ash due to the severe heat of the fire.

Without my Malinois’s accurate detection, this individual might have remained undiscovered, leaving a family without answers.

This experience not only solidified my confidence in my young dog but also underscored the importance of canine teams in disaster response scenarios.

Is there a future where search and rescue dogs might be replaced?

Despite significant efforts in creating advanced robots and sensors mimicking these canines, no technology has yet surpassed dogs’ proficiency, particularly in odour detection.

Dogs’ extraordinary olfactory abilities, combined with their agility, render them essential for search missions.

Enhanced strategies, informed by experience, now enable us to deploy them in high-probability locations within residences, increasing the efficiency of our searches.

The immediate focus lies in enhancing our current methodologies and prioritising the safety of our canine companions.

Introducing tools that can detect hazards in real-time could be beneficial, but outfitting dogs with such devices brings forth challenges.

Anything hindering their agility or scent detection is counterintuitive.

Although technology will keep advancing, the present consensus is clear: our canine partners, with their unique skills, remain indispensable in search and rescue operations.
