SFPE Fire Safety Engineering Conference set for April 2025 in the UK

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the professional society for fire protection and fire safety engineering, has announced the 2025 SFPE European Conference & Expo in Fire Safety Engineering. This year, the event will be held in Edinburgh, UK, from 9-10 April 2025.

Hosted every other year, the conference features two days of technical content from the fire safety experts where current and future trends in fire safety engineering will be discussed.

Featured presentations at the conference

The conference will feature over 40 presentations, structured around the topics of; fire protection, the safety regulatory frameworks, structural fire engineering, electric vehicles, parking structures, building envelopes, sustainability, digitization, human behaviour, wildland fires, timber construction, fire testing, fire modelling and smoke control, plus additional poster presentations

The opening keynote of the conference will be `Michelin Stars and Golden Arches’, presented by Luke Bisby, PEng, PhD, MSFPE, FREng, FRSE, FIFireE, FIStructE, Chartered Structural Engineer.

Advancing performance-based fire safety and fire risk assessment design methodologies continues to play an essential role in the fire safety engineering profession.

As such, SFPE remains the leader in providing the technical tools that assist the fire safety engineer in delivering the best engineering solutions for all stakeholders for a given design project.

For example, in early 2025, SFPE will publish the 6th Edition of the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering, which is considered the body of knowledge in our profession.

The increased use of performance-based design, fire risk assessment methods, computer models, and the increasing complexity of fire protection systems have increased the engineering rigor required to practice in our profession.

Also, as our profession becomes more complex, the public’s understanding of how fire safety engineering is practiced decreases.

Unfortunately, the qualifications for those practicing in our profession are inconsistent globally.

Some countries have elaborate licensure/certification systems that establish competence as an engineer.

At the same time, many countries do not have a means of establishing the competence of their fire protection engineering workforce.

Without an effective way of measuring competence, protecting the public’s health, safety, and welfare is difficult.

For example, an important recommendation from the Report of the Public Inquiry into the Fire at Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017, Phase 2, released in September 2024, focused on the increasing need for competency in the fire safety engineering profession.

Part of this recommendation stated, “Designing buildings that are safe in the event of a fire requires particular skill.

It is a skill that can be acquired only by specialized education and experience worthy of formal recognition…..

The circumstances surrounding the Grenfell Tower fire show that an effective contribution from a fire engineer could have prevented the disaster by alerting the client and the principal contractor to the dangers of using aluminum composite panels with unmodified polyethylene cores and combustible insulation in the external wall of the building.”

SFPE is working on increasing the competency of the fire safety engineering workforce in various ways.

For example, SFPE has published the Recommended Minimum Technical Core Competencies for the Practice of Fire Protection Engineering.

This document establishes a framework for understanding the technical basis for this specialized engineering discipline that can be used throughout the globe.

In addition, in the United States of America, SFPE works with NCEES to develop the PE Exam in Fire Protection.

This exam is essential to the licensure of engineers in the United States.

Moving forward, SFPE will continue its work to ensure a competent workforce exists that will work tirelessly to reduce the risk of fire in our communities.

SFPE reveals 2024 class of fellows and top award winners

SFPE 2024 fellows and award recipients announced

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced its 2024 class of Fellows and award recipients, as reported by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.

Fellow membership represents the highest professional honour of SFPE, awarded to individuals with significant accomplishments in fire protection engineering.

The 2024 SFPE Fellows include Dr Brian Ashe, Chris Butts, John F. Devlin, Kiyoshi Fukui, Don Hopkins Jr., Charles Joyce, Brian Y. Lattimer, Seth Sienkiewicz, Michael Spearpoint, and Gabriele Vigne.

Rising leaders in fire protection engineering

The SFPE “5 Under 35” awards highlight the top rising leaders in the fire protection engineering profession who also contribute to the community.

The 2024 recipients are Andrea Lucherini, Andrew Poole, Emily N. Thomas, Jonathan Hodges, and Victoria Hutchison.

These individuals have shown exceptional dedication and promise in the field, contributing to both their profession and the broader community through their work and service.

SFPE awards ceremony details

In addition to the fellowships and “5 Under 35” awards, SFPE has announced ten other award recipients for 2024.

These awards recognise various contributions to the field, such as mentorship, education, and service.

Among the recipients are Jack Poole, Bryan Hoskins, David Grossmann, Greg Baker, J. Sargent “Sarge” Slicer, Morgan Hurley, Ed Ruckriegel, David Stacy, Derek Gruchy, Dustin Stokes, Michael A. Crowley, and Tracy Franklin-Williams.

The awards will be presented during the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo in Louisville, KY, USA, from October 6-8, 2024.

SFPE annual conference & expo 2024 in Louisville: Program and speakers announced

Registration opens for SFPE annual conference & expo

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the opening of registration for the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo, scheduled to take place from October 6-8, 2024, at the Louisville Marriott Downtown in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

The event will bring together the global fire protection and fire safety engineering community to learn, network, and engage with over 45 presentations on topics such as building design, energy storage, fire-safety systems, and sustainability.

Keynote and sessions

The conference will open with a keynote presentation by Fire Chief Brian O’Neill of the Louisville Fire Department.

Other sessions will cover special hazard systems, recent code changes, fire risk assessment, and insights from the SFPE Energy Storage Symposium.

Attendees can earn up to 14.50 hours of professional development credits.

SFPE Foundation releases report on Building Information Modeling and fire protection integration

New report explores the integration of Building Information Modeling in fire safety systems

The SFPE Foundation has officially released a report titled “The Integration of Building Information Modeling with Fire Protection Systems, Software, and Workflows.”

Dated March 18, 2024, and announced in Gaithersburg, Maryland, this publication represents a significant exploration into how Building Information Modeling (BIM) can be integrated into the fire engineering sector.

Spearheaded by Stephen B. Roth, PE, the research investigates the application of BIM software and schemas for fire engineers, aiming to enhance design processes and promote wider adoption of BIM technologies in this critical field.

Findings and recommendations from the research

The report, which concludes a year of rigorous research and analysis, uncovers the potential for notable improvements in software, data management, and interoperability between various systems used by fire engineers.

Based on interviews with over 40 stakeholders, Roth recommends that manufacturers of fire protection equipment focus on designing more user-friendly Revit families.

Additionally, updates to the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) schema are suggested to facilitate better interoperability.

The document also delves into the future prospects of BIM in fire engineering, including the adoption of artificial intelligence tools and the creation of digital twins for more effective firefighting strategies.

Supplementary User Guide and industry impact

Accompanying the main report is a User Guide that offers practical advice on overcoming common workflow challenges encountered by fire engineers when utilising FE-related software tools.

Leslie Marshall, Ph.D., Director of the SFPE Foundation, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts within the fire engineering community to ensure BIM’s broader adoption.

Marshall stated: “This research highlights the need for the fire engineering community to align efforts and collaborate with a diverse array of stakeholders to ensure greater adoption of BIM.”

SFPE Foundation funds three new fire safety research projects

The SFPE Foundation has announced the awarding of three research grants, supporting studies on Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fires, fire testing of resilient and sustainable building materials, and the interface between digital buildings and fire service operations.

This funding aligns with the Grand Challenges Initiative research agenda, aiming to enhance scientific understanding of fire and its interactions.

Understanding Li-Ion BESS fires

The first project, led by Jamie McAllister (PhD, PE) of FireTox LLC, with team members Brandon McCarrick (PE) and Zelda Zhao, focuses on the environmental and health impacts of thermal runaway events in outdoor lithium-ion BESS installations.

The project aims to understand the health and environmental aspects of li-ion BESS fires, including products of combustion, factors influencing propagation, and firefighting tactics.

The team plans to develop a risk analysis of the health and environmental impacts of such fires.

Fire testing of building materials

The second project, under the leadership of Prof. Richard Walls (PhD, MSc, BScEng, GDE, BTh, PrEng) of Stellenbosch University, along with Dr. Natalia Flores-Quiroz, Yohannes Shewalul, and Carlo Kuhn of Ignis Testing, aims to identify sustainable building materials used in construction and their fire testing methods.

This study seeks to address potential fire risks not covered in existing testing methods through further experimental fire testing.

Digital buildings and fire service operations

The third project, led by Dr. Nils Johansson of Lund University, with Dr. Enrico Ronchi and Dr. Katelynn Kapalo, focuses on the flow of digital information from smart buildings to the fire service.

It aims to optimise this flow and integrate data from Smart Firefighting tools for use by incident commanders.

Leslie Marshall, PhD, Director of the SFPE Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the projects: “We are thrilled that the funding made possible through the Grand Challenges Initiative has enabled us to support not just two, but three exceptional research projects.

“Each project and its dedicated team promise to bring invaluable results and advance the 10-year plan outlined in the GCI white papers.”

The Grand Challenges Initiative, supported by SFPE, Fire Safety Research Institute/UL Research Institutes, Code Red Consultants, FM Global, Harrington Group, Jensen Hughes, and other partners, focuses on pressing global challenges where fire safety science and engineering can contribute to discussions and solutions.

SFPE appoints Chris Jelenewicz as new Chief Executive Officer

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the appointment of Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE, as its new Chief Executive Officer.

This significant development in the leadership of the world’s foremost professional body for fire protection and fire safety engineering marks a new chapter for the organisation.

Jelenewicz, a seasoned member of the SFPE team since 2004, succeeds Nicole Boston, CAE, who served as the CEO from October 2013 through April 2023.

Having most recently held the roles of Chief Engineer and Interim CEO, Jelenewicz brings a wealth of expertise to his new position.

He possesses academic credentials in fire protection engineering and management from the University of Maryland and is a licensed professional engineer in this specialised field.

His appointment is a testament to his reputation as a respected and trusted industry leader.

Leadership transition and strategic vision for SFPE

The transition of leadership comes at a pivotal time for the SFPE.

With over 5,300 members, the society is at a critical juncture in its evolution.

IFSJ Influencer Insight: Jimmy Jönsson, FSFPE, President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers

‘Acceptance of the use of fire protection engineering in the industry has shifted.’

Our profession has quite a few challenges ahead, some are very apparent, but others are not.

The obvious one is how sustainability aspects are already affecting us, and with no doubt it will affect us even more in the future. The pace of sustainability measures that are being incorporated into industry and into our society as a whole is steadily increasing. Sustainability is becoming a key concept in most areas — whether it is water consumption, energy production, or development of new materials – and it touches everything.

Sustainability is obviously entering into many aspects of the fire protection engineering profession. Since facilitating a sustainable and fire-resilient built environment for future societies has become an essential objective, fire protection engineers must understand how sustainability is an important aspect of daily jobs. 

It is important for fire protection engineers, architects, policymakers, researchers, code officials, fire service representatives, and sustainability professionals to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the aim of promoting sustainable and fire-resilient built environments. This requires understanding the diversity of sustainability and fire resilience design objectives for the built environment. It also includes balancing the diverse and sometimes competing objectives of current and emerging technologies for building sustainability and fire safety.

Building designers will need to go beyond the prescriptive codes to design sustainable and fire resilient buildings. This will require that fire protection engineers (and others) implement alternative fire safety solutions that balance social, environmental, and economic impacts of fire.

There is a need for a change within our industry, a necessary step to truly understand how sustainability impacts fire risks.  This starts with thinking about how sustainability impacts the industry as a whole through design, research, legislation, etc. If the fire protection engineering profession can understand this impact and consider it in our daily work, it will have taken the first important step.

I would also like to touch upon another important topic that has been identified as one of the key challenges for our profession – competence.

Looking across the globe during the last decade, acceptance of the use of fire protection engineering in the industry has shifted. Many national regulations have performance-based codes, something that is necessary if we want to take real advantage of the principles of fire protection engineering in our projects. Buildings and infrastructure need a first-principles approach to justify fire safety goals, and that can only be done by using fire protection engineering. However, during the last few years, several national codes have restricted engineering freedom by imposing design restrictions for technical analysis.

Why is the profession going in this direction? In essence, it is because the technical quality of fire protection engineering analyses, the design solutions, and the performance criteria for projects can be so varied — ranging from excellent, to deficient, to everything in between. The fire safety of buildings often comes down to one important aspect: the competence of the fire protection engineer.

There is a definite need to create industry awareness. Increasing the global awareness of the specialized knowledge and experience needed for competent practice of fire protection engineering is a very important task needed to steer our profession in the right direction. This will help the fire protection engineering discipline gain professional recognition and acceptance in countries where it is not yet recognized. This recognition will let other professional engineers know there is an intricacy of knowledge and relevant experience required to ensure that appropriate fire protection engineering considerations have been taken.

SFPE announces new leadership team for 2024

SFPE welcomes new President and Board Members for 2024

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the election of Bob Libby, PE, FSFPE [left], as its 2024 President, and Amanda Kimball, PE, FSFPE, [right] as President-Elect.

 This marks a significant leadership change for the world’s leading professional society in fire protection and fire safety engineering.

Experienced professionals to lead SFPE into the future

Bob Libby, a seasoned professional with over 40 years of experience in the field, will bring his extensive expertise to the role of President.

 Libby, currently the Senior Vice President and Principal of Fire Protection Engineering at Coffman Engineers, has a deep background in fire protection systems for commercial buildings.

 He is an alumnus of the University of Maryland with a degree in Fire Protection Engineering and has been actively involved in SFPE, including serving on the SFPE Board of Directors since 2018.

Amanda Kimball, elected as President-Elect, is the Executive Director of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Protection Research Foundation.

 With 20 years of membership in SFPE, Kimball has contributed significantly to research in various fire safety fields.

 She holds degrees in Civil Engineering and Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Newly elected and re-elected Board Members

The SFPE has also announced the election of Shamim Rashid-Sumar, PE, FSFPE, as Secretary-Treasurer, along with the re-election of John Denhardt, PE, ET, FSFPE, CWBSP, and Albert Simeoni, PhD, PMSFPE.

 Jeffrey Tubbs, PE, FSFPE, joins as a new member of the SFPE Board of Directors.

 These individuals will commence their terms starting January 1, 2024.

Leadership to steer strategic objectives

Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE, Interim Chief Executive Officer of SFPE, expressed confidence in the newly elected leadership, emphasizing their capacity to drive the Society’s strategic objectives towards innovation and sustainability in the fire protection and fire safety engineering profession.
