The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the opening of registration for its Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Fire Protection Exam Review Course.

Commencing on November 28, 2023, and spanning until April 2024, the course is strategically timed to assist candidates in their preparation for the Fire Protection Engineering PE Exam scheduled for April 16th, 2024.

With ten instructors specialising in various aspects of fire protection engineering, the SFPE PE Exam Review Course taps into the vast expertise of SFPE’s member community.

The live online courses, available twice a week, also offer recorded sessions for on-demand access.

Attendees benefit from added review sessions, online discussions, practical problem-solving exercises, and dedicated office hours with the instructors.

This comprehensive approach ensures candidates are well-equipped to approach the exam.

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the SFPE Foundation are making significant strides towards sustainability in the realm of fire protection engineering.

The SFPE recently expressed its commitment to ensuring a sustainable and fire-resilient built environment.

Earlier this year, the SFPE Board of Directors approved a position statement titled: “Engineering a Sustainable and Fire Resilient Built Environment”.

This statement recognises the importance of sustainability and fire resilience as key objectives for the built environment, and the necessity for every project to harmonise these aims.

SFPE’s efforts to promote sustainability

In an article titled “How SFPE is Developing Opportunities for the Fire Protection Engineering Profession to Influence & Elevate Sustainability in the Built Environment”, SFPE President, Jimmy Jönsson, FSFPE, and Interim Chief Executive Officer, Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE, outlined the ways fire protection engineers can work alongside architects, policymakers, researchers, and other professionals.

Their goal was to foster a constructive dialogue centred on the promotion of sustainable and fire-resilient built environments.

In a bid to incorporate these ideals into the daily activities of fire protection engineers, SFPE facilitated three live webinars, available now on-demand:

Scheduled for November 29-30, 2023, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, this symposium aims to explore concepts, tools, and strategies conducive to fire-safe buildings.

Emphasis will be placed on the significance of fire safety in sustainable design and education.

SFPE Foundation’s focus on sustainability

Placing sustainability at its core, the SFPE Foundation adopted a fresh vision statement in December 2022.

This focuses on engineering a world that is resilient, sustainable, and fire-safe for everyone.

The SFPE Foundation recently released a report, “Risk and Performance Assessment Framework for a Sustainable and Fire Resilient Building Environment (SAFR-BE)”, to pave the way for future tools assessing sustainable and fire-resilient buildings.

Authored by Brian Meacham, Håkan Frantzich, Margaret McNamee, and Erik Kimblad, the report’s findings are available for on-demand viewing in a dedicated webinar.

Grand Challenges Initiative’s role

The SFPE Foundation’s Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI) unveiled a white paper on sustainability and resilience titled “Grand Challenges in Resilience & Sustainability:

A 10-Year Plan for Strategic Cooperation in Research and Education to Advance Fire Engineering”.

SFPE Symposium: Join experts and leaders in advancing fire safety and sustainable building design

The emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from human activities has facilitated significant changes to our global climate. 

This in turn has resulted in an increase in the magnitude and frequency of climate- and weather-related hazard events, including wildfires.

The combination is creating significant socio-economic impacts, including property loss, business and insurance losses, illness, injury and death, on top of damages to our ecosystems and environment.

The built environment has been recognized as a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions through use of copious amounts of fossil fuel powered electricity, embodied carbon in construction materials, and other inefficient uses of natural resources.

This has prompted a decades-long effort to increase environmental, social and financial sustainability of the built environment through better thermal insulation of buildings, use of local alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic systems, material with lower embodied carbon, and more.

However, some sustainable building materials, technologies and features have created unintended fire hazards and risks.

Likewise, some sustainable community design principles, such as increased densification, may create unintended urban fire risks, especially when located in the wildland urban interface.

SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium for Fire Safety and Sustainable Building Design

This SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium, in partnership with FRISSBE, is planned for 29-30 November 2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and has been crafted based on the driving need to engage fire safety engineers, architects, policy makers, researchers, fire service representatives and sustainability professionals in meaningful dialogue on how to jointly tackle issues at the nexus of sustainability and fire safety, with the aim to promote sustainable and fire resilient built environments.

This requires understanding the diversity of sustainability and fire resilience design objectives for the built environment, the current and emerging technologies for building sustainability and fire safety, and policy and regulatory challenges around balancing these diverse and sometimes competing objectives.

To help advance interdisciplinary discussions and holistic solutions, a select group of leading thinkers, researchers, and practitioners in both sustainability and in fire safety have been assembled to share their knowledge and engage with the attendees.

This group of experts will challenge myths and provide science-based data – identify challenges and offer solutions – overview the current state and provide insights into the future.

SFPE Foundation announces 2023 award recipients

The SFPE Foundation, known for its dedication to enhancing the scientific understanding of fire, recently announced its award recipients for 2023.

A look at the 2023 SFPE Foundation awardees

Bart Merci, PhD from Ghent University, Belgium, has been awarded the esteemed Arthur B. Guise Medal.

He is scheduled to give the Guise Keynote Address on the significance of competency in fire safety engineering at the 2023 SFPE Annual Conference & Expo.

Silvia Arias, PhD, Axel Mossberg, PhD, Daniel Nilsson, PhD, and Jonathan Wahlqvist, PhD have been honoured with the Jack Bono Award for Engineering Communication.

This recognition comes in light of their article in Fire Technology titled: “A Study on Evacuation Behavior in Physical and Virtual Reality Experiments”.

Jacob Derrick, an undergraduate student at Glasgow Caledonian University, UK, has received the Dr. Guylène Proulx, OC Scholarship.

His award-winning research delves into the behavioural characteristics of neuro-diverse individuals during evacuation scenarios.

Zhuojun Nan, PhD and Pascale Vacca, PhD have been granted the Student Scholar Awards.

While Nan is acknowledged for her structural analysis research under realistic fire situations, Vacca is lauded for her studies on Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires and her contributions to the SFPE Foundation’s WUI Working Group Initiative.

Oluwatobi Gbenga Aluko from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is the recipient of the Frederick W. Mowrer Global Scholar Award.

His research focuses on the efficacy of biofibrous concrete when exposed to high temperatures.

Leslie Marshall, Ph.D., Director of the SFPE Foundation, shared: “The annual SFPE Foundation awards and scholarships help us deliver on our mission by recognising and supporting the outstanding work of leaders across the global fire engineering community.”

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) continues its ambitious journey to establish the recommended minimum technical core competencies for the practice of fire protection engineering in support of its mission to define, develop, and advance engineering best practices; expand the scientific and technical knowledge base; and educate the global fire safety community to effectively reduce fire risk.

A critical part of this endeavour has been the comprehensive definition of core competencies deemed essential for the profession of fire protection engineering.

These four areas of expertise are Fire Science, Human Behaviour and Evacuation, Fire Protection Systems and Fire Protection Analysis.

Fire Science

This competency entails a comprehensive understanding of the underlying physical principles of fire and its related mechanisms, including the principles of ignition, combustion, heat transfer, mass transfer, fire chemistry, and fire dynamics.

Human Behaviour and Evacuation

This area requires a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour and the principles of means of egress design. It includes knowledge about the behaviour of people during an emergency, different design approaches, and tools and methods to perform egress, evacuation, and escape assessments.

Fire Protection Systems

This competency focuses on a comprehensive understanding of fire mitigation, including water- and non-water-based suppression; fire detection and alarm systems; smoke management systems; passive systems; fire testing; and code and standard concerns.

Fire Protection Analysis

This area necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the principles of technical analysis related to fire protection design.

It includes identifying and quantifying fire-related risks and hazards, design approaches, concepts for evaluating design options, application of numerical methods and computer fire models, establishing boundary conditions, and the limits of analysis and design.

Acknowledging the vast landscape and diversity of areas in the field of fire protection engineering, the Society is working now to define the scope of seventeen specific roles from these core competencies, covering the global relevance and the potential impact of our discipline, offering opportunities to those dedicated to safeguarding life, property, and the environment from fire-related devastation.

This process is ongoing now; participation and feedback is welcomed.

Additionally, SFPE is working to continually develop educational content to support fire protection engineers seeking to increase their competency across many of these roles.

SFPE Foundation’s Grand Challenges initiative seeks public input for advancing fire engineering

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Foundation, a philanthropic body dedicated to broadening the scientific comprehension of fire and its interaction with the social, natural, and built environments, is encouraging public input on four strategic research and education papers.

These papers, integral to their Grand Challenges initiative, aim to promote advancements in fire engineering. To access these papers, visit the SFPE’s website.

Public insight on Grand Challenges initiative

Published in July 2023, these four papers focus on the Grand Challenges initiative and propose ten-year strategic cooperation plans in research and education to improve fire engineering.

They cover the critical areas of Climate Change, Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity, Energy and Infrastructure, and Resilience and Sustainability.

The Foundation has requested all comments by October 31, 2023.

Grand Challenges addressing global issues

Dr Leslie Marshall, Director of the SFPE Foundation, remarked: “For us to meet the grand challenges that face society on a global scale, we need to strategically invest in the research, education, and outreach initiatives that will advance fire engineering as it relates to climate change; digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity; energy and infrastructure; and resilience and sustainability.”

She highlighted the role of the 33 GCI Founding Partner organisations and 80 GCI Working Group members and emphasised that community feedback is essential for ensuring alignment and improvement in the future priorities identified in these papers.

Encouraging wide participation in the Grand Challenges initiative

To encourage community participation and feedback, the SFPE Foundation has organised a series of free virtual Grand Challenges initiative meetings taking place on July 25, 27, and August 2, 3, 2023.

The aim is to provide further understanding of the research, education, and outreach priorities identified in the papers. The meetings will be available for on-demand viewing afterwards.

Moreover, the SFPE Foundation will also be sharing updates and seeking feedback in person at the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo in Washington, D.C./Bethesda, and at the SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium for Fire Safety and Sustainable Building Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Grand Challenges initiative and its supporters

Launched in 2022, the Grand Challenges initiative by the SFPE Foundation prioritises global challenges where fire safety science and engineering can contribute significantly to discussions that impact billions of people daily.

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), an international professional body for those involved in fire protection and safety, has announced that registration is now open for its annual conference and expo. This year, the event is scheduled to take place at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center in Washington, D.C./Bethesda, MD, USA, from October 8-10.

An abundance of presentations and sessions

This conference is renowned as the venue where fire protection engineers and fire safety professionals convene for insightful learning, networking, and inspiration. It is slated to showcase more than 65 presentations on a wide array of topics. These include building design, energy storage, fire-safety and water-based systems, sustainability, fire service, and engineering strategies in the wildland urban interface, among others.

Notable keynotes will include: James Milke, PhD, PE, FSFPE, discussing changes to the profession of fire protection engineering, and Charles Bailey, Division Chief of Fire and Rescue Operations in Montgomery County, on how changes in the built environment impact fire department performance.

SFPE announces programme and speakers for the Engineering Solutions Symposium on Mass Timber

An invitation for fire protection professionals to the SFPE symposium

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), a premier global professional society dedicated to fire protection and fire safety engineering, has invited fire protection engineering professionals to participate in their Engineering Solutions Symposium on Mass Timber. The event is scheduled to take place on August 24-25, 2023, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Focus on mass timber and associated engineering solutions

This symposium aims to provide engineering solutions related to fire protection with new, high-performing mass timber products, encapsulated mass timber construction, and job site safety, among others. Competency needs for the fire-safe design of tall timber buildings will also be addressed.

Visiting a modern mass timber structure and other symposium highlights

The symposium’s itinerary includes a site visit to One Young Street in Kitchener, Ontario, the first modern building in the Waterloo region utilising a mass timber structural system. Perspectives from the insurance industry, building officials, new research, case studies, and future research requirements are also included in the event’s programme.

Announced speakers: A blend of industry professionals and academics

The speakers enlisted for the symposium bring a blend of practical and academic insights. For instance, “understanding competency needs for the fire safe design of tall timber buildings” will be addressed by Jose Luis Torero, from University College London. Ying Hei Chui from the University of Alberta will cover “next-generation wood construction.” Neil Chaudhuri from FM Global will give the “insurance perspective,” while Rick Cheung from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services will offer the “perspective of a fire official.”

In addition to the speakers, two panel discussions will be conducted: one on the role of building officials, and another on industry-to-academic connectivity.
