Sustainability within construction is an absolute must.

It was once framed around client appeal and environmental performance, but now, it is under close inspection from regulators and inspectors.

Issues such as waste management, emissions and resource use are increasingly enforceable with non-compliance resulting in fines, project delays and reputational damage.

Under standards issued by the Building Safety Act and ESG disclosure rules, poor practices damaging the environment can create legal and ethical exposure across projects.

Clients expect auditable sustainability performances within construction sites and contractors who fail to uphold these standards face consequences.

For construction sites to remain safe, sustainability needs to be incorporated into policies, site practices and procurement to turn environmental responsibility into the main point of compliance strategy rather than a sidelined initiative.

Regulatory overlap on site

Regulations now span health and safety, environmental standards, data protection and ESG reporting – all of which are intersecting on-site.

The Building Safety Act sets clear responsibilities, whilst environmental and sustainability regulations demand demonstrable performance across every stage of a project.

This convergence means construction sites must handle multiple regulators, overlapping obligations and a higher amount of inspections.

Breaches are rarely isolated and failures in one area, such as waste management, can create legal and ethical problems across the project.

“Construction firms are dealing with a regulatory environment that no longer operates in silos,” comments David Gilbertson, CEO at Wireless CCTV Ltd.

“Safety, sustainability, data protection and reporting obligations are increasing on site, which means compliance is more likely to have wider consequences if governance and accountability are no longer defined.”

For compliance leaders on a project, this expansion of regulations reinforces the need for integrated policies and oversight.

Sites must embed environmental, safety and reporting standards into everyday practice to ensure that sustainability and compliance are treated as core operational and ethical accountability.

Enforcement and site evidence

Compliance failures carry real consequences.

Waste, dust, noise, air quality and pollution are now under strict oversight under regimes, such as the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) and local laws.

In a recent analysis by Qflow, waste transfer notes found only 64% compliance, meaning one in three documents lacked legal details.

This included missing permits or carrier licences, exposing firms to regulatory action.

National regulators carried out 11,000+ on-site EPR inspections in 2024.

This highlighted the scale of oversight and the expectation of intensive documentation.

Alongside this, noise pollution incidents related to construction projects have been recorded in the dozens, showing why noise and emissions require proactive management plans.

ESG credibility under scrutiny

Sustainability expectations are now reaching down to the site level, where environmental performance, labour practices and governance standards need to align with what sites are reporting.

Sustainability frameworks remain focused on consistency, transparency and accountability, which places pressure on construction sites to demonstrate how ESG commitments integrate into day-to-day operations.

This has resulted in the need for accurate, auditable environmental data that shows the real activity on site.

When reporting is misaligned with the operations, the risk of greenwashing becomes important.

Regulators, clients and funders are alert to the gap and vague claims can undermine credibility and impact trust.

Construction firms are under scrutiny during procurement and funding decisions.

ESG performance is no longer assessed separately but as a core indicator of long-term risk management, governance and compliance maturity.

Digital oversight and GDPR

As construction sites adopt more digital oversight to support safety and sustainability, data protection has become critical.

Environmental monitoring, access control and site oversight generate personal data, bringing GDPR obligations directly on-site rather than just head office.

“As digital oversight becomes more common on construction sites, organisations must ensure data protection is considered from the outset,” states Gilbertson.

“Collecting data for safety or sustainability reasons does not remove the obligation to process it lawfully, transparently and responsibly.”

To collect data for safety and sustainability purposes, it’s important to still meet legal requirements surrounding lawful processing and transparency.

Firms need a clear understanding of why data is being captured, how long it is kept and who has access to it.

Without this transparency, well-intentioned monitoring can create a compliance risk unintentionally.

Tools deployed to improve oversight can expose organisations to data protection breaches if the policies are not clearly defined.

For compliance leaders, aligning with digital oversight is essential to ensure that sustainability and safety initiatives strengthen regulatory compliance.

Supply chain shared liability

Ethical obligations extend across supply chains, where subcontractors, suppliers and partners all contribute to the site’s performance.

As a result, sustainability failures sometimes originate with third parties, yet the consequences are shared across all.

Inconsistent compliance standards remain challenging.

Different levels of environmental awareness, record-keeping and governance across subcontractors can undermine compliance frameworks.

When oversight is weak, firms risk exposure through inaccurate reporting, breaches or contractual issues.

Shared liability is becoming harder to ignore.

Contracts put responsibility on contractors to ensure sustainability and compliance standards are upheld throughout the supply chain.

This makes third-party oversight a priority.

Effective due diligence, clear expectations and ongoing monitoring are now crucial to managing risk and ensuring that sustainability commitments are delivered across every stage of a project.

Reporting as compliance control

Compliance reporting is now the foundation of sustainable construction.

If sustainability measures can’t be proven, they are difficult to defend during inspections, audits or investigations.

As scrutiny increases, incomplete or fragmented records are not seen as administrative oversights, but as indicators of weak compliance control.

It’s challenging for construction firms to be aligned with environmental data, health and safety records and ESG disclosures, as many are often reported through separate processes.

This risks inconsistency or gaps and where reporting is disjointed, sites struggle to demonstrate accountability across projects.

As a result, compliance reporting is evolving into a strategic discipline, underpinning regulatory confidence, commercial credibility and long-term risk management.

Compliance leaders have a clear list of priorities.

Sustainability is a non-negotiable that must be embedded into compliance frameworks.

At the same time, ESG data accuracy and reporting processes need to be strengthened to support transparency and withstand external scrutiny.

Preparing for audits and inspections

Construction sites must prepare for a regulatory environment defined by increased inspections, audits and accountability.

Proactive compliance, supported by clear reporting and oversight, will be essential.

For construction leaders, the ability to evidence sustainability and compliance is no longer confined to the office, but it is central to maintaining trust, securing work and delivering projects responsibly.

Orama Group has set out steps it says it is taking to strengthen sustainability across its businesses, including energy changes at selected sites and the use of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) monitoring.

The group includes Argus, Hyfire and Ramtech.

Orama said Argus and Ramtech have obtained EcoVadis certifications, with Argus receiving a Bronze Medal and Ramtech receiving a Silver Medal.

The EcoVadis assessment is described as covering policies on the environment, labour rights, ethics and sustainable sourcing.

The certifications are presented as part of an improvement approach linked to corporate social responsibility.

Operational changes listed by the group

Orama listed the installation of photovoltaic systems for renewable energy production at selected sites, including Argus and Ramtech.

It also described a progressive conversion of thermal systems from natural gas to electric.

It also stated it uses 100% renewable energy and has strengthened health, safety and inclusion policies in the workplace.

The group described sustainability work across customer, internal and compliance levels, with activities aligned to Halma guidelines and supported by certifications and policies to reduce plastic use in packaging.

FIA establishes sustainability group for fire safety sector collaboration

Sustainability special interest group to launch

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has launched a new Sustainability Special Interest Group (SIG) to support fire safety organisations working on sustainability-related requirements and practices, with its first meeting scheduled for Friday 20 February 2026.

The FIA said the group has been created in response to rising regulatory and market expectations across the built environment, where fire safety influences product selection, system design, construction methods and whole-life building performance.

The association stated that the built environment accounts for around 37 percent of UK carbon emissions and nearly half of all material resource use, positioning fire safety decision-making as part of wider environmental and social considerations.

Sustainability focus areas and practical outputs

The Sustainability SIG will bring together manufacturers, service providers and sustainability specialists to address environmental and social aspects of sustainability relevant to fire safety.

Planned focus areas include Environmental Product Declarations and Life Cycle Assessments, embodied carbon and Net Zero pathways, circular economy principles, product lifecycles, ESG reporting and practical tools, along with social sustainability topics such as diversity and inclusion, wellbeing and community impact.

The group is expected to share practical guidance, real-world case studies and tools that members can apply within their organisations, with the aim of supporting consistent and proportionate approaches across the sector.

Regulatory context and participation

The FIA said sustainability-related requirements affecting the built environment are developing quickly, citing upcoming and ongoing changes including the Future Homes and Buildings Standard in 2025, CPR updates, Digital Product Passports and embodied carbon disclosure.

The Sustainability SIG will support members through these changes by providing guidance, peer insight and aligned approaches with organisations including UKGBC, BRE and ASBP.

Construction begins on fire station 215

The City of Brampton has reported that construction has started on Fire Station 215, a new all-electric facility in the city’s northeast.

The 11,377 square-foot site will include two bays, a hose tower, a green roof and solar panels.

The city explained that the facility will be fully electric, including its vehicles, HVAC equipment, building automation systems and infrastructure.

Station 215 is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 15 tonnes annually.

The project will be located in Ward 10 and is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2026.

What the latest FSi Promat sustainability data reveals about carbon in construction

New EPDs published for UK fire safety products

FSi Promat has announced the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for two of its products, reporting verified data on their environmental performance.

According to FSi Promat, the EPDs cover the Pyrocoustic Sealant and Stopseal Coating, both used in fire stopping applications across the UK construction sector.

The manufacturer stated that the declarations were prepared in line with ISO 14025 and EN150804+A2:2019, standards that define third party-verified environmental reporting.

It explained that this step reflects its focus on sustainability in both product development and manufacturing.

The company noted that these publications are intended to support architects, specifiers and contractors with decision-making on material selection.

Environmental performance of Pyrocoustic Sealant

FSi Promat reported that Pyrocoustic Sealant is used to reinstate fire resistance in wall and floor constructions where linear gaps or service penetrations occur.

The company explained that the new EPD sets the cradle-to-gate Global Warming Potential of this product at 1.0 kgCO2-eq./kg.

It added that the total embodied carbon score, across modules A1–A5 and C, is 1.3 kgCO2-eq./kg.

The manufacturer stated that these metrics are provided to allow accurate comparisons with alternative solutions.

It continued that the results show the carbon footprint across both manufacturing and installation phases.

Environmental performance of Stopseal Coating

The manufacturer reported that Stopseal Coating is an ablative coating used with the Stopseal Batt System to reinstate fire resistance in wall constructions with service penetrations.

FSi Promat explained that the cradle-to-gate Global Warming Potential of this coating is 0.7 kgCO2-eq./kg.

It noted that the EPD findings contribute to life cycle analysis of building projects.

The company added that these figures provide designers and contractors with reference data when assessing the environmental footprint of products.

It said that the data reflects a low carbon profile during manufacturing and use.

Manufacturing with renewable electricity

According to FSi Promat, both the Pyrocoustic Sealant and Stopseal Coating are manufactured at its facility in Measham.

The company stated that this facility now runs on 100% renewable electricity.

It explained that this transition forms part of its sustainability programme.

The manufacturer indicated that the move further reduces the environmental impact of its UK production.

It added that this milestone complements the product-level declarations.

The service said 6.9% of its operational and corporate fleet is now electric-powered.

Five additional electric vehicle charging stations were recently installed at its Service Headquarters in Washington, in collaboration with Equans.

The service explained that these vehicles are used for multiple purposes, including by the fire safety team during inspections of residential and commercial properties.
