UK manufacturer sets out environmental aims for fire extinguisher production

The IFSJ Leaders in Fire & Safety Conference has reported that Britannia Fire Joint Managing Director Andy Spence delivered a presentation on extinguisher innovation and regulation at the 2025 event in Dubai.

Spence said the fire industry must support new ideas that meet environmental and customer expectations.

He noted: “Innovation needs to be encouraged and new ideas explored and developed in all industries.”

Spence explained that Britannia Fire had transitioned fully to composite extinguisher production and is aiming to move away from traditional servicing models.

He said the company is using AI, sensor technology, and new agent types in its upcoming range.

Fire extinguisher design changes linked to circular economy goals

Spence told the audience that production methods must reflect the full life cycle of fire safety products.

He said: “Companies need to look at where improvements can be made to benefit the customer, the industry and the environment.”

He added: “If we can develop it, we can test it and we can ensure that it works then it’s a win-win for everybody.”

Spence said composite extinguishers can meet safety requirements while reducing carbon output, minimising servicing needs and extending lifespan.

He stated: “We have a 20 year lifespan PAS free reduction in carbon footprint, recyclable and it’s better for the environment.”

Industry regulation identified as key obstacle to change

Spence raised concern about the pace of regulation, particularly around British and European extinguisher standards.

He said: “We stifle innovation by not moving faster.”

He added: “It used to take five years to write a standard. It still takes five years. But it was five years 30 years ago.”

He noted that updates in communication and testing allow for faster revisions.

He said: “We’ve got email now. Somebody needs to tell them. It’s so easy. We can move a lot quicker.”

Local sourcing and PFAS-free materials highlighted in UK market

Spence reported that over 75 percent of extinguishers sold in the UK are imported from China, despite high transport distances and associated emissions.

He stated: “They travel 4,000 miles to the UK before we actually put them onto a wall.”

He added that composite extinguishers can be made in the UK using local materials and processes that reduce dependency on chemical treatments.

He said: “We have a full PAS free range of products as well.”

He also discussed fire agent options for lithium-ion battery incidents and outlined a new development for small-scale battery devices.

Magirus firefighting vehicles now delivered with HVO100 fuel

HVO100 introduced for vehicle delivery to reduce emissions

Magirus has announced that firefighting vehicles it delivers will now be initially refuelled with HVO100, where approved by the chassis manufacturer.

The company confirmed that the change is effective immediately and applies to both new and existing vehicles with manufacturer approval.

HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a synthetic diesel substitute derived mainly from waste oils and fats from the food industry.

The fuel has been legal since 2024 and is recognised for its lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced air pollutants.

Engine compatibility and operational advantages

According to Magirus, HVO100 results in cleaner engine performance and is suitable for operation in cold conditions.

Thomas Hilse, CEO of Magirus, said: “The synthetic fuel also keeps engines clean for longer.

“These factors make HVO100 an ideal choice for use in fire engines, which often have to operate under extreme conditions.”

The company noted that many diesel engine manufacturers have approved the use of HVO100 and recommended checking vehicle-specific approval through authorised workshops or online sources such as Mobil in Deutschland e.V.

Environmental and operational motivations behind the switch

Magirus stated that the transition supports its goal of reducing emissions in emergency services operations.

Marc Kuntz, Director Sales and Customer Service at Magirus, said: “With the use of HVO100, Magirus is already pursuing the goal of making a sustainable contribution to environmental protection and making firefighting operations as emission-free as possible.”

Hilse added: “The decision to use HVO100 as the standard fuel for initial refuelling demonstrates Magirus’ commitment to promoting innovative and sustainable technologies and underlines its commitment to environmentally friendly solutions in firefighting.”

Considerations on battery-powered alternatives

Magirus addressed questions around battery-electric emergency vehicles, noting the higher procurement costs and shorter battery lifespan.

The company highlighted that availability risks for high-voltage batteries currently impact the feasibility of electric vehicles in this sector.

It added that the use of HVO100 does not affect the procurement costs of combustion-engine vehicles, presenting a lower-cost alternative to electric options.

London Fire Brigade’s energy portal recognised at Energy Awards

London Fire Brigade’s sustainable energy initiatives

As reported by the London Fire Brigade, the Energy Portal, a module within the Building Energy Management System (BEMS), has been instrumental in reducing energy consumption across its 103 fire stations.

The system, controlling around 65 per cent of the Brigade’s energy usage, was introduced in January 2022.

In July 2024, it won the Building Management Low Carbon Initiative Award at the Energy Awards and was nominated for the Energy Efficient Partnership of the Year.

The Energy Portal provides an accessible and interactive platform for monitoring energy consumption, encouraging staff to reduce energy use, similar to a home smart meter.

The BEMS enables the Brigade’s Technical Assurance team to virtually manage heating and hot water systems and promptly address any issues through an alarm system.

Award-winning energy reduction achievements

Between April 2022 and March 2023, the London Fire Brigade achieved a 17 per cent reduction in energy usage, surpassing its target of 10 per cent.

Mitch Layng, Carbon and Utilities Manager, said: “We are proud to have been recognised at the Energy Awards.

“The implementation of the Energy Portal has been really successful, and we are so pleased by the response and engagement from our staff.

“Collectively, we all have a part to play in the fight against climate change.”

The Brigade’s commitment to sustainability aligns with the Mayor of London’s goal to make the city carbon net zero by 2030.

Energy savings also contribute to financial savings, allowing funds to be reinvested into services.

Carbon net zero strategy and future plans

The London Fire Brigade is developing a comprehensive carbon net zero strategy.

In 2022, it unveiled its first carbon net zero fire station in Walthamstow, featuring electric heat pumps, solar panels, and energy-efficient lighting.

By the end of 2024, five more stations are set to achieve carbon net zero status, with funding secured to decarbonise an additional 12 stations by the end of 2026.

In addition to fire stations, the Brigade’s fleet of emergency response cars is now all-electric.

The development of the first zero-emission pumping appliance is underway.

The Brigade is also introducing hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) to fuel some of its fire engines.

HVO, produced from vegetable fats and oils, reduces vehicle carbon emissions by about 90 per cent.

Warringtonfire’s Birchwood Park laboratory earns award for environmental and social value standards

Warringtonfire Laboratory at Birchwood Park recognised with Considerate Constructors Bronze Award

Warringtonfire’s upcoming laboratory at Birchwood Park has been recognised with a Considerate Constructors Bronze Award in partnership with main contractor Tilbury Douglas.

The award recognises the efforts of construction sites, organisations, and suppliers who commit to raising environmental and community social value standards.

The Birchwood Park site, which is nearing completion, achieved a perfect 45 out of 45 score.

The site was judged on three pillars: respect for the community, care for the environment, and value for the workforce.

It received top marks in all categories and was praised for its environmental and social policies.

Warringtonfire and Tilbury Douglas implemented various measures to demonstrate the social value of the site.

These included an open doors week, hosting a Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity site presentation on mental health, and promoting health and wellbeing conversations.

The teams also made charitable donations to Warrington Youth Zone and the Trussell Trust Food Bank and purchased sanitary products for the workplace via the Hey Girls social enterprise.

Environmental initiatives and ISO 14001 accreditation

The report highly commended Warringtonfire and Tilbury Douglas for the project’s environmental pledges.

These included a Net Zero 2050 carbon reduction plan, avoiding diesel-powered plant and equipment during construction, promoting the use of HVO fuel, and planting over 50 trees.

Tilbury Douglas’ ISO 14001 accreditation, the international standard for environmental management systems, further reinforced the project’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

Local students from Warrington Vale and Royal College were welcomed to the site throughout National Apprenticeship Week, with several offered future work experience placements.

Iwan Lewis, Project Manager of the site for Tilbury Douglas, said: “Investing in the next generation of construction professionals is a key priority for my team and together with Warringtonfire we have actively engaged in educational outreach activities with Warrington and Vale Royal College to address the skills shortage in the construction and fire stopping industries.”

Future plans for the Birchwood Park laboratory

The 101,000 square foot Birchwood Park site is set to be the new hub for Warringtonfire’s fire testing services.

Due to open its doors in January 2025, it will triple the company’s testing capacity.

The laboratory will have two vertical furnaces, two horizontal furnaces, and one indicative furnace ready for test specimens when it launches, with two more furnaces to be added by the end of 2026.

Phil Shaw, Managing Director at Tilbury Douglas, said: “It’s a great result and evidences the team’s inherent culture on site driving our sustainability strategy, ‘People, Planet, and Performance’, or PPP, which sets out to deliver improved social and environmental outcomes for our business, customers, and supply chain.”

The site has had a notable impact on the local community through various outreach efforts.

Dafydd Llewelyn-Jones, Project Manager for Element Materials Technology, said: “This award recognises all the hard work put into the project, both from our team and Tilbury Douglas.

“We’re particularly proud of our social value scores, especially our outreach with the local community.

“Warrington has always been our home, so it is important that we continue to make valuable contributions to both the next generation and the environment.”

Promat signs up to Science-Based Targets initiative to support net zero economy

As reported by Promat, the company aims to cut carbon emissions across its operations in support of a net zero economy, in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The pledge involves developing a target-driven action plan to reduce scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions.

Promat has set a target to reduce its scope 1 and 2 ‘direct’ emissions by 35 percent by 2030.

The SBTi is a global scheme established to help companies set clear, evidence-based targets to work towards a net-zero economy.

New fire safety measures in EPBD recast for EU climate goals

As reported by the Forum for European Electrics Domestic Safety (FEEDS), the official publication of the EPBD recast in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on May 8, 2024, introduces new tools to help the EU achieve its climate neutrality goals within the built environment.

The main components of the recast focus on lowering energy bills, enhancing energy security, and boosting competitiveness.

Importantly, the new EPBD also includes several fire safety provisions, potentially integrating the FEEDS’ recommendations for domestic electrical safety.

The successful implementation of these provisions at the national level is crucial for delivering better living conditions, alleviating energy poverty, and improving the safety of buildings in Europe.

FEEDS releases recommendations for electrical safety

To address the challenges posed by the EPBD recast, FEEDS has released recommendations to stakeholders, EU institutions, and Member States.

The document provides detailed guidance on integrating electrical safety into EPBD implementation guidelines.

Key areas include Energy Performance Certificates, one-stop shops, Renovation Passports, Digital Building Logbooks, and National Building Renovation Plans.

These recommendations aim to ensure that electrical safety is a priority in building renovations and improvements.

FEEDS highlights opportunities to enhance the safety of domestic electrical installations, contributing to safer and more energy-efficient buildings across the EU.

Importance of addressing fire safety risks

The electrification of buildings through heat pumps, solar installations, batteries, and recharging infrastructure introduces new fire safety risks.

EPBD Recital 36 emphasizes the need for Member States to address these risks as part of their national implementation plans.

Ciarán Cuffe, MEP, stated during the European Fire Week 2022: “The EPBD is now an essential part of the Fit for 55 package, but it wouldn’t make sense to improve the energy performance of a building while leaving us unsafe because of obsolete electrical installations and lack of proper fire safety features.”

Member States urged to enhance electrical inspections

Seán Kelly, MEP, highlighted the critical importance of fire safety in buildings during the European Fire Week 2023.

He noted that nearly 50% of domestic accidental fires have an electrical source, stressing the need for Member States to develop electrical inspection regimes and ensure that renovations integrate electrical safety checks.

Kelly said: “The safety of our citizens remains our highest priority, and this includes ensuring that energy-efficient buildings are also fire safe.”
