FIA announces creation of technology council

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has announced plans to create a new Technology Council for the UK fire safety sector.

According to the FIA, the council will focus on evaluating emerging technologies, improving system integration, and promoting secure data use across the industry.

The organisation said this is the first time in more than ten years that it has formed a new council.

It explained that the Technology Council will include up to 15 members, with nominations opening to FIA members in September ahead of its Annual General Meeting.

The FIA confirmed that the council’s first meeting will involve selecting a Chair from the elected members.

Purpose and scope of the technology council

The FIA said the new council will assess which advancements will improve existing systems, simplify processes, and ensure reliability in fire safety technology.

It noted that while existing standards and regulations must be met, these should not prevent adoption of better methods.

The organisation added that current FIA technology working groups, such as those on Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber security, have shown there is strong member interest in technical development.

The FIA explained that the Technology Council will provide a formal structure for these discussions and ensure coordination between stakeholders.

Objectives for technology adoption

According to the FIA, the council will encourage access to real-time site data for organisations of all sizes.

It will aim to improve system interoperability, enable data-led responses, and support immediate communication between stakeholders.

The organisation said the group will also work to promote use of virtual collaboration tools, create learning platforms for sharing best practice, and strengthen relationships between clients and providers.

California strengthens firefighting technology through Skyryse aviation partnership

Firefighting aircraft in California to integrate automated flight system

Skyryse has announced a partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to upgrade firefighting technology used in aerial operations.

According to Skyryse, the agreement will see its SkyOS system incorporated into future CAL FIRE aircraft, aiming to improve operational efficiency, safety and mission performance.

SkyOS is described by the company as the first universal operating system for flight. It replaces traditional mechanical flight controls with fly-by-wire technology and introduces automation tools designed to support pilot performance in high-pressure situations.

CAL FIRE operates the largest civil aerial firefighting fleet in the United States. Its bases are positioned across California for response times of under 20 minutes.

The agency has also reported that the partnership follows January 2025 wildfires in southern California which burned more than 57,600 acres and affected over 18,000 structures.

SkyOS designed to assist flight crews during wildfire missions

Skyryse explained that SkyOS includes a range of features intended to improve aerial operations in wildfire conditions.

The company stated that the fly-by-wire design enhances control in all weather conditions by replacing mechanical systems with digital ones.

Optionally-piloted capability is included, allowing aircraft to be deployed in areas unsafe for crewed missions.

The system also enables increased payload capacity and extended flight time, which Skyryse says will support sustained operations on the fire line.

A streamlined digital interface is used to reduce cognitive load on the pilot, and safe envelope protection features aim to reduce risks during missions in low-visibility environments.

CAL FIRE supports aviation-focused firefighting technology

CAL FIRE has stated that adopting new aviation technologies is part of a broader strategy to adapt to evolving wildfire threats across California.

Jake Sjolund, Deputy Director of Fire Protection at CAL FIRE, said: “CAL FIRE continues to leverage advanced technology to enhance aviation safety, increase operational effectiveness, and drive greater efficiency across our aerial firefighting missions.

“By integrating tools like real-time telemetry, situational awareness systems, and data-driven decision support, we are evolving to meet the complex challenges of modern wildfire response.”

The agency provides wildfire protection across 31 million acres of private land and offers additional emergency services across 36 counties.

Its fleet includes fixed-wing and rotary aircraft stationed at 14 air attack and 11 helitack bases throughout the state.

January 2025 wildfires influenced new tech focus

Skyryse’s announcement follows large-scale wildfires that impacted southern California at the start of 2025.

According to CAL FIRE incident records, 14 separate wildfires occurred across Los Angeles, Ventura, San Diego and nearby counties.

The fires led to at least 30 fatalities and required a multi-agency emergency response effort.

More than 18,000 buildings were affected and approximately 57,600 acres were burned during the incidents.

The event has prompted calls for enhanced aerial support and technology that enables faster, safer deployment in severe conditions.

The department’s aircraft are stationed in strategic locations to allow for rapid deployment within minutes of a wildfire alert.

California’s wildfire chatbot prompts fire protection concerns

Wildfire AI chatbot raises public fire protection concerns

California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has launched an AI-powered chatbot designed to improve public access to wildfire information and fire protection guidance.

According to Route Fifty, the tool was developed as part of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2023 executive order to boost government services using generative AI.

The chatbot, created by Citibot, provides answers based on content from the Cal Fire website and ReadyForWildfire.org.

Although it can correctly identify active wildfires and give general preparedness tips, testing by CalMatters found that it fails to offer consistent answers or the most current information.

These limitations have prompted researchers and technology experts to question whether AI deployment by California agencies is being appropriately evaluated.

Evaluation methods and chatbot performance under scrutiny

Daniel Ho, law professor at Stanford University, said that evaluation processes should be central to deploying AI tools in the public sector.

Ho said: “Evaluation is not an afterthought. It should be part of the standard expectation when we pilot and roll out a system like this.

“There should also be clear benchmarks created by an independent third party to measure performance.”

CalMatters found that small changes in how questions were phrased caused the chatbot to deliver inconsistent answers, especially on evacuation kit contents.

Although the bot was able to list items when asked about an “evacuation kit,” it failed to do so when other common phrases like “go bag” or “fire preparedness kit” were used.

In some instances, the chatbot linked to external webpages instead of providing direct answers, even though the relevant phrases were included on the referenced sites.

Containment status and recruitment information outdated

When asked about the Ranch Fire in San Bernardino County, the chatbot gave an update that was six days old, stating that the fire was 50 percent contained.

At the time of the query, the fire was already 85 percent contained.

A separate question about Cal Fire job vacancies also produced inaccurate results.

The chatbot stated that there were no openings, but a check on the state’s official employment site revealed two active listings.

Mila Gascó-Hernandez, research director at the University at Albany’s Center for Technology in Government, said: “If a fire is coming and you need to know how to react to it, you do need both accuracy and consistency in the answer.

“You’re not going to think about ‘what’s the nice way to ask the chatbot?’”

Limitations in emergency response information

The chatbot cannot provide reliable information about evacuation orders, according to testing.

Depending on how the question was phrased, it either returned no answer or gave an incomplete response.

In some cases, it incorrectly identified the issuing authority.

Cal Fire’s Deputy Chief of Communications, Issac Sanchez, said the system should be able to answer evacuation-related questions more reliably.

Sanchez said: “The answer should be ‘there doesn’t appear to be any evacuations associated with this incident’ if none are in place.

“It really was started with the intent and the goal of having a better-informed public about Cal Fire.

“We’re combing through the queries to improve future responses.”

Experts urge improved design before public release

Both Ho and Gascó-Hernandez emphasised that better public sector AI requires structured design and pre-launch user testing.

Ho said that defining performance benchmarks before selecting a vendor is essential.

Gascó-Hernandez added that representative user engagement before deployment improves the relevance of the information provided.

She said: “These user engagement and user experiences are very important so the citizen ends up using the chatbot.”

Cal Fire said it will continue to refine the system, with a commitment to host the chatbot until at least 2027.

Updates have already been made to expand its capability in response to user feedback.

California fire chatbot accuracy questioned by experts: Summary

Survey shows technology impacts firefighter safety and recruitment

A new survey by IDEX Fire & Safety and Lexipol has highlighted how technology is shaping recruitment and safety practices in the United States firefighting sector.

According to IDEX Fire & Safety, the survey gathered responses from nearly 700 firefighters across both urban and rural departments, revealing shared operational concerns regardless of location.

Respondents indicated that digital tools are helping improve on-the-job safety and may play a role in attracting younger recruits.

The survey found that 86% of firefighters believe technology will influence future recruitment, while 64% said it improves their job satisfaction.

The findings suggest departments may need to adapt hiring strategies to appeal to Millennials and Generation Z, many of whom have grown up with digital systems and expect technology to be part of their working lives.

Technology adoption linked to safety outcomes

Respondents to the IDEX Fire & Safety and Lexipol survey expressed broad confidence in technology as part of incident response.

According to the survey, 87% of respondents said technology had helped them save time in dangerous situations.

In addition, 86% said it had helped them reduce or avoid risk during an emergency.

IDEX Fire & Safety said nearly 60% of firefighters surveyed reported feeling safer on the job when using digital tools.

According to the company, its integrated systems such as SAM, SAM BOOST, E3 CONNECT and the Smart Nozzle provide live data to crews, assisting decision-making during response operations.

The manufacturer explained that by handling monitoring tasks, such technologies allow firefighters to focus more on situational awareness and life-saving actions.

Recruitment toolkit launched to attract new talent

To address generational shifts in the workforce, IDEX Fire & Safety has launched a recruitment toolkit for fire departments.

The company said the toolkit is intended to help departments attract younger candidates by aligning with their values and expectations around digital integration.

Survey data showed that while many younger people are interested in meaningful work, they also expect their roles to include modern technologies.

IDEX Fire & Safety stated that the recruitment toolkit is part of broader efforts to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the industry.

According to the company, the toolkit supports departments in building talent pipelines that reflect the future direction of firefighting.

Gaps in training and trust in new systems

While survey respondents expressed interest in using digital tools, there were concerns about confidence and training.

According to IDEX Fire & Safety, 68% of respondents believe technology is reliable in high-stakes conditions, while 26% said it is sometimes reliable.

Only 40% of respondents said they felt fully comfortable using the technology available to them, and 38% said they had received adequate training.

The survey findings indicate that departments may need to prioritise hands-on experience and support to help firefighters gain confidence with new systems.

IDEX Fire & Safety said long-serving staff may be less familiar with newer equipment and may require tailored training approaches.

Changing generational expectations in the fire service

According to IDEX Fire & Safety, attracting Millennials and Generation Z into the fire service will require changes in recruitment and working practices.

The company said younger people are less likely to consider firefighting as a career if it is perceived to lack modern technology.

The survey suggests that digital transformation is now a critical factor in how the profession presents itself to prospective candidates.

IDEX Fire & Safety stated that while some in the industry remain hesitant, the pace of technological change and generational turnover will make adaptation necessary.

The company said that integrating technology into both operational tools and recruitment processes will be key to retaining and attracting the next wave of firefighters.

Reevaluating firefighting foam, with Perimeter Solutions

Mark Siem, Business Development-Industrial/Chemist at Perimeter Solutions, explores the role of Class A and Class B foams, their benefits and how training gaps have influenced their use 

Class A firefighting foam helps make firefighting more effective, improves its efficiency, and introduces other advantages to firefighters. Misconceptions about the technology and its capabilities, and lack of training have contributed to a decline in its use over recent years.

Now, as firefighters seek out new resources to enhance their firefighting efforts, many are reconsidering Class A foam.  

At the same time, advancements in Class B fluorine-free firefighting foams along with evolving regulatory requirements have led to a surge in interest in these solutions.  

The advantages of class a firefighting foam 

The primary advantage of Class A Foam is that it enhances water’s effectiveness in dousing flames. Water’s high surface tension causes it to bead up and roll off most fuels and away from heat too quickly to be able to absorb as much heat as possible.  

Class A foam contains hydrocarbon surfactants, and its addition to water reduces its surface tension, allowing for the solution to penetrate the fuel. When you add a small amount of foam concentrate to water, as low as 0.1%, the size of the water droplets shrinks, creating more surface area, resulting in better heat absorption. The water/foam solution also penetrates deep into Class A fuels (paper, wood, cloth, and some plastics) to stop flames. By increasing water’s effectiveness, foam allows firefighters to achieve more rapid fire suppression using less water—in fact it can increase water efficiency 2-4x.  

Use of foam also reduces the amount of water needed which makes it easier to preserve the scene for arson investigation, increases firefighter safety by shortening knockdown time, reduces the amount of toxins released in the air through combustion and decreases the likelihood of a fire rekindling. 

Dispelling misconceptions about class a foam 

Despite its demonstrable benefits, use of Class A foam has declined partially due to misperceptions. Some people mistakenly believe that Class A foam is fluorinated, but that is not the case. It has been tested and approved for wildland firefighting by the United States Forest Service (USFS), demonstrating its safety and effectiveness.  

An increasing gap in firefighter education has also contributed to the declining use of Class A foams. When Class A foam was initially introduced, fire departments provided extensive training to ensure that all firefighters were well-versed in its application and knew when and how to use it effectively.

Though the focus on education has declined, this is a great opportunity to refresh training efforts to ensure that firefighters are equipped to use foam effectively in their standard firefighting.

Many fire departments also perceive water as a free resource, leading to the assumption that adding a foam agent incurs unnecessary costs. In reality, the amount of foam required to create the optimal mixture is minimal—resulting in only a few cents per gallon.

The resulting water savings, additional wear and tear on trucks and fuel consumption, along with the enhanced firefighting capabilities foam provides, make it a cost-effective tool for protecting lives, property, and communities.

The advantages of Class B firefighting foam 

Class B firefighting foams are designed to combat flammable liquid fires involving gasoline, oil, and other hydrocarbon or polar solvent fuels. These foams form a blanket over the burning liquid, cutting off oxygen and preventing vapor release, which helps to suppress fires quickly and effectively.

As Class B foam technology has improved, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) removed mandates requiring the use of fluorinated foams, and the U.S. military committed to phasing out their use in 2024 (except for shipboard applications). Closing the knowledge gap with foam training

What is the Prevent + Protect platform and what made Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service select it for their hydrant management needs? 

Russell: Prevent + Protect is our workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management software for prevention and protection. It provides a central, connected data repository for premises, contacts, organisations, hydrants, operational risk and prevention and protection. Users access the system, hosted on Microsoft Azure and provided via a SAAS model via our Web client or Mobile/Tablet App.  

The App enables (among many other things) the completion of hydrant, prevention and protection jobs using smartphones, tablets, or other suitable devices and integrates with technologies such as online/offline working, optimised route planning, cameras and GPS location. 

DFRS: We conducted a requirements analysis process and the resulting list of requirements was shared with prospective suppliers. Demonstrations were invited and prospective solutions were scored against our requirements and other evaluation criteria. The hydrants module of Prevent + Protect could meet our requirements and scored most highly of the products evaluated. 

What advantages does the platform’s Software as a Service model offer to fire and rescue services compared to traditional systems? 

Russell: Our SaaS model means we can run and manage our mission-critical software solutions – like Prevent + Protect – as a secure service on the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform, reducing complexity, storage and maintenance overhead and making upgrades faster and easier.

Blue light services also need to be able to work from anywhere and at any time – and our SaaS model supports this essential requirement.

What issues were present in Derbyshire’s previous hydrant management system and how does the Prevent + Protect platform address them? 

DFRS: Our previous on-premise hydrant management system was going end-of-life, so this was the reason for us moving to a new solution.  

The key goal for us was to successfully migrate our existing hydrant data to Prevent + Protect and be able to continue to operate core service processes relating to hydrant management, whilst also allowing us the scope to introduce new ways of working with the mobile app for recording hydrant inspections out in the field in the future. 

What practical tools and features within the platform assist with hydrant inspections, repairs and job tracking? 

Russell: Hydrant inspections, repairs – or any other job – can be scheduled, allocated, recorded and reported on using our workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management solution. The mobile app makes this functionality easily accessible and usable when teams are ‘on the move’ out in the field, with location mapping, data at their fingertips and easy recording of use, inspection and testing of hydrants. You can also plan and manage efficient hydrant inspection campaigns based on repeat periods and other attributes.  

How does the integration with Microsoft Azure and Entra ID enhance security and accessibility for users? 

Russell: Single sign-on via Microsoft Entra ID is a key enabler for ease of use and increased security, preventing users from logging in across multiple systems with multiple passwords. If they are already logged into their FRS Microsoft account via solutions like Outlook, they are taken straight into the system without any login requirement. If not, they can use those existing FRS credentials and security policies, including Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) which are managed by the FRS.  

By integrating with Microsoft Azure and Entra, we can offer a secure, cloud-hosted service to promote anytime/anywhere access with high levels of availability and resilience of data (we can go to a backup of data in any minute of time in the last 30 days). It also reduces maintenance overhead and allows us to complete upgrades using automated pipelines, making the whole process faster and easier. 

Looking forward, what role could the Prevent + Protect platform play in future digital initiatives within the fire and rescue sector? 

Russell: Prevent + Protect offers a huge opportunity to positively impact the digital future of fire and rescue, where the focus on prevention, protection and operational risk is greater than ever. One workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management solution that connects these areas and data offers significant benefits – delivering a true picture of operational risk, highlighting requirements/gaps and tracking performance across prevention and protection workstreams. 

The integrated data can also link with and provide Mobile Data Terminals with accurate information when attending an incident on hydrant locations, including status as well as wider Site Specific Risk Information (SSRI). 

It empowers mobile workers to operate from anywhere without losing access to their key work platform to complete jobs ‘in the field’. Additionally, our Prevent + Protect solution integrates with FireWatch, allowing users to connect their preventative work with response planning and management and see a holistic picture across all FRS areas.

Denley Nunn, Regional Sales Manager at Cygnus, explains how Johnsons Workwear upgraded its fire alarm system with SmartNet-Pro 

Can you tell us about a recent Cygnus installation and the challenges it aimed to address? 

Johnsons Workwear, an industrial garment laundry business based in central Bristol, updated its fire alarm and detection systems with the help of installers, Cannon Fire & Security, after a fire risk assessment highlighted the existing 30-year-old system was inadequate. The assessment advised that its three buildings would require a category L1 fire alarm installation. 

The primary challenges included the risk of asbestos, installation time and potential operational downtime. To address these challenges effectively, Cannon Fire & Security chose Cygnus’ world first EN 54 certified and 100% wireless SmartNet-Pro fire detection and alarm system. This system ensured a highly reliable and efficient installation. 

What made Cygnus the right choice for this project? 

Cygnus’ award-winning SmartNet-Pro was chosen for its 100% wireless technology, significantly reducing the need for extensive cabling. The nature of the properties brought certain complexities due to their age, namely the amount of metal framework of the building which would require other wireless fire alarm systems to install a significant number of hard-wired expanders.  

Additionally, the risk of asbestos needed to be considered, as extensive drilling would present health and safety risks. SmartNet-Pro, being 100% wireless, required only minimal drilling to fix devices to ceilings and walls. This ensured minimal disruption, allowing Johnsons Workwear to continue operation during installation, and saving both time and costs. 

How did the installation process unfold, and were there any unique challenges? 

The installation process began with a pre-site meeting and walk-around to plan an initial hard-wired solution. Dominic Gundry-White, Managing Director of Cannon Fire & Security I met with the Cygnus team who discussed SmartNet-Pro and how the product uses wireless mesh technology to eliminate the requirement for any hard-wired cabling or boosters, characteristics which were ideal for Johnsons Workwear.  

By switching to Cygnus’ SmartNet-Pro, the installation took two weeks with no disruption the client, instead of the proposed eight weeks, which would have caused a lot of disruption. 

The site consists of two industrial laundry buildings and a separate boiler house, which have all been connected using one SmartNet-Pro control panel. The installation utilises 170 Cygnus SmartNet-Pro devices including detectors, sounders, call points and input/output units. 

How does this project showcase Cygnus’ capabilities for future installations?

The vital role of video flame detection in fire safety and how industry standards are shaping the future of this technology.

Video flame detection (VFD) is attracting attention among fire industry professionals in complex settings. One company at the centre of this development is Ciqurix, a UK-based firm with a cutting edge approach to fire detection.

Through an investment from Midwich Ignite, Ciqurix’s technology is moving toward broader implementation in a variety of industries.  

The partnership includes a push for hitherto elusive third-party accreditation, setting the stage for wider acceptance of VFD. Here is a look at Ciqurix and its CORE system, showing why the technology has generated significant interest, with industry professionals anticipating greater detection speed and improved reliability. 

How video detection works 

Dangerous environments often require a reliable approach to detecting flames before conditions worsen. Ciqurix addresses this issue by offering a video flame detection system that uses infrared and video analytics to recognise fire within seconds.

The company’s CORE system can identify flames promptly, with detection times frequently under ten seconds, even in areas with strong airflow, airborne particulates, or extreme temperatures.

This design suits industrial sites, waste management facilities and other challenging settings where conventional smoke or heat detectors might prove inadequate. 

Ciqurix, based in the United Kingdom, seeks to raise standards for fire safety through advanced technology and a focus on quality. Its pursuit of robust testing and accreditation demonstrates a commitment to meeting official regulations.

Investment in fire safety 

Midwich Ignite, the corporate venture capital division of the Midwich Group, has offered backing to Ciqurix as part of a wider objective to improve fire detection technology. The arrangement promises to boost video flame detection solutions, especially as interest grows in advanced systems that can address tricky conditions. 

A central part of this support involves Ciqurix’s drive to gain official recognition through third party accreditation. Achieving this status will position the CORE system as the first of its kind under a UK standard designed specifically for VFD. That distinction is significant for fire professionals in search of options beyond standard smoke or heat detectors.

Improving response times 

Fire system designers need methods that offer prompt detection, especially in workplaces where high airflow or dust can interfere with traditional detectors. Ciqurix aims to address these scenarios by combining video analytics and infrared sensors to detect fires that might go unnoticed by standard technology. Quick identification means responders have valuable seconds to contain potential outbreaks. 

In sectors like waste and recycling, airborne debris regularly disrupts traditional detection tools. The CORE system monitors visual indicators of fire rather than relying on smoke or heat alone, increasing the odds of an early response. Similarly, cold storage facilities and sites with extreme temperatures benefit from a device that is quicker to respond and less prone to faults.. 

The technology’s official recognition by agencies and risk assessors brings reassurance to those responsible for site safety. The Environment Agency sees VFD as a means to improve compliance. Risk assessors, industry consultants and system designers view it as a complementary measure, particularly in industrial or commercial areas prone to sudden flames.

Ciqurix’s approach aligns with BS5839-1 fire safety standards, reinforcing its suitability for sites where consistent detection remains a challenge. This link between compliance and speed boosts the profile of video flame detection across different applications. 

Detection across sectors 

Different industries face a range of fire hazards. Waste and recycling centres, for example, generate dust, smoke and fumes that can foil older systems. Ciqurix’s use of infrared and video feeds offers an alternative that spots visible flames quickly, even in turbulent conditions. 

Storage and distribution depots often house valuable goods in large, sprawling areas. With multiple aisles and high shelving, these locations benefit from a detection mechanism that locates fire activity before flames spread.

Industrial and manufacturing plants, especially those involving high-temperature processes, also see advantages in a camera-based system that functions reliably despite intense production schedules. 

The construction sector faces irregular layouts and incomplete structures, which make typical detection methods less effective. A self-contained unit like the CORE system can adapt to shifting site conditions. Energy and utilities operations, dealing with critical infrastructure, appreciate an approach that stands up to harsh temperatures and can alert personnel with minimal delay. 

In aviation, prompt notification is important when thousands of passengers move through terminals daily. Ciqurix technology is designed to watch wide-open spaces and detect potential fire rapidly. This broad application base illustrates why VFD has attracted positive feedback from safety officials, insurers and managers aiming to reduce costly downtime. 

Meeting safety standards 

Compliance is very important in fire safety technology and Ciqurix seeks to meet established rules through several design choices. The CORE system follows BS5839-1 standards and includes fire-rated cabling to maintain signal integrity during a fire.

More than 24-hours of battery backup ensures that the system stays operational, even if power sources fail. This setup gives building operators, insurers and regulators confidence in continuous coverage. 

Environmental and governmental agencies have taken note of how video flame detection can strengthen public safety measures. In particular, the Environment Agency points to video-based systems as a viable way to reduce hazards at waste management sites.

Fire system designers also see potential benefits, given that VFD can detect visible flames more quickly than many traditional sensors. 

As Ciqurix aims for third party accreditation, it is hoping to become the first certified video flame detection product under a UK specialised fire safety benchmark. This status will highlight a commitment to meeting official fire guidelines and create new opportunities for adoption in sectors requiring greater reliability. FLIR’S AI-based incident detection used in Damsgård Tunnel

Both visual and thermal imaging cameras are used as a solution for 24/7 automatic incident detection inside tunnels. With the latest camera technology upgrade of the Damsgård Tunnel in Bergen, Norway is premiering AI-enhanced dual-vision cameras as a new evolution in incident detection.

Damsgård Tunnel Technology Upgrade

The Damsgård Tunnel is part of Norwegian National Road 555. In 2024, the tunnel will undergo a comprehensive technology upgrade, with the replacement of ventilation systems, lighting, drainage, and camera technology.

The traffic cameras from sensor specialist FLIR combine thermal and visual imaging technology in a ruggedized housing and rely on advanced deep learning algorithms that enable the camera to detect stopped vehicles, wrong-way drivers, queues, crossing pedestrians, and even smoke and fires in their early stages.

Approximately 80 FLIR cameras are scheduled for installation the second half of the year.

Visual and Thermal Incident Detection

Initially, visual CCTV cameras were used to detect incidents. The technology enabled first response teams to be deployed minutes—even seconds—after an incident or an irregularity (a fallen object, a pedestrian, a car slowing down) was detected.

The use of thermal imaging cameras has especially proven valuable for tunnel entrances and exits. There, shadows or direct sunlight can obstruct the view of visible-light cameras and therefore disturb traffic detection.

As thermal cameras detect heat, not light, they can detect traffic 24/7 and in all weather conditions.

One of the biggest advantages of thermal cameras in the field of tunnel safety is that they can effectively see through smoke. This makes them the ideal technology for tunnel safety operators or emergency response teams to find their way through a smoke-filled tunnel or for incident detection systems to spot issues in time.

FLIR thermal cameras can also spot fires at the stage of ignition, making them the fastest and most reliable technology for fire detection inside road tunnels.

The Role of Dual-Vision Cameras

In 2018, FLIR’s ITS-Series Dual AID cameras were installed at the entrance and exit of the Lyderhorn Tunnel near Bergen. In 2021, technology integrator Trafsys also installed 332 of FLIR’s dual-vision cameras in the Hundvåg and Eiganes tunnels, which are part of the extensive Ryfast project.

The cameras’ fire detection functionality proved effective when a car fire occurred in the Hundvåg tunnel in July 2020; the FLIR ITS dual thermal AID camera detected the fire within 7 seconds of visible flames, following an initial alert for a stopped vehicle and pedestrians.

Artificial Intelligence in Incident Detection

FLIR’s TrafiBot Dual AI—installed in the above-mentioned Damsgård Tunnel—announces a new wave of incident detection cameras. The camera also combines a visual and a thermal camera in one unit, but what makes it stand out is the use of artificial intelligence and deep learning.

AI algorithms embedded in the FLIR camera analyze captured images in real-time and in full resolution. This latest addition to FLIR’s portfolio of AI cameras is setting a new standard for automatic incident detection in tunnels, generating extremely accurate traffic data, incident detection information, and live track data.

Benefits of AI-Based Detection Systems

AI can help to filter out unwanted alarms by distinguishing between routine activity, weather phenomena, and actual incidents.

As an important aspect of their accuracy, AI-based systems are much more successful in detecting different vehicle classes. Detectors from FLIR will easily distinguish between a car and a van, or between a small and a large truck.

FLIR’s AI detectors can also predict vehicles trajectories. Based on vehicle parameters such as speed and direction, they can easily see where a car is going, even if for part of that trajectory the view on that car is occluded by a passing truck. This makes detection much faster and more accurate.

Since incidents can be detected much faster and with more accuracy, operators will be able to make better informed decisions, especially in high-stress situations, and they will be able to deploy emergency teams more quickly.

AI will benefit traffic planners too. Data collected from a camera can be analyzed over time to identify trends, patterns, or areas with a higher potential of incidents. This can be valuable for proactive traffic planning, infrastructure improvements, or for overall risk management.
