Exclusive: Seeing through the smokescreen with Emberion

Can Short Wavelength Infrared cameras benefit the Fire & Safety industry? Dr Samiul Haque, Senior Product Manager at Emberion investigates

The fire industry is continuously tackling challenging situations where adverse conditions can affect rescue operations. Smoke from the fire is a major disruption during a rescue operation and a camera that can see through smoke would provide a fundamental advantage in solving some of the key challenges.

Cameras that operate in the visible spectral range cannot penetrate through smoke. This is due to wavelength across 400-700nm (nanometres) being absorbed rather than reflected back. On the other hand, short wavelength infrared wavelength can penetrate through smoke particles and so with short wave infrared (SWIR) imaging one can easily see through smoke particles in the air.

Infrared camera developer Emberion has created a camera based on nanostructured materials which allows it to capture an image from visible range 400nm to extended SWIR range up to 2000nm using colloidal quantum dot materials which are semiconductor crystals (<20nm) that can be integrated on a single CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) readout chip. The readout chip allows the photons impinging on the surface of the sensor which subsequently generates electrons to be read out.

Emberion designs the readout circuits and the image pipeline user interface and ultimately a camera that can be deployed. We produce high performance visible to short wavelength (VIS-SWIR) infrared cameras based on its unique nanomaterials-based sensor solution and custom CMOS read out integrated circuit. We have also already enabled various applications in machine vision, surveillance, pharmaceutical, agriculture, multispectral imaging where both visible and infrared cameras are utilised.

Outdoor imaging

A challenging area for outdoor imaging is bad weather conditions for example when there is smoke, haze, or fog in the air. This can be address by SWIR imaging cameras. The incumbent technologies have been expensive due to the complexity of the fabrication procedures undertaken, for example the hybridisation semiconductor bonding processes of Indium Galium Arsenide (InGaAs). InGaAs-based sensors require complex wafer to wafer bonding processes and the yield of this process as you increase the resolution becomes more challenging as it requires the alignment of millions of micro-solder bumps to form micro-connections to a readout integrated circuit.

In comparison to the InGaAs processes, Emberion utilises scalable monolithic integration process which mainly consists of industry standard spin-coating, evaporation or sputter coating techniques making it a viable, highly scalable process in terms of manufacturability.

The camera can be utilised to see through smoke in outdoor conditions. During a test, the images captured by the Emberion VS20 camera clearly gave a clearer picture when taken through smoke than those shot with standard CMOS camera, such as those people have on mobile devices.

As the camera can capture from 400-2000nm and the visible range is from 400nm-700nm which needs to be cut-off to allow only the SWIR wavelength to be detected as the smoke particles let through the SWIR wavelength. Due to this, the image captured with Emberion VS20 SWIR camera with a 1000nm band pass filter in front of the lens of the shortwave infrared camera to filter the visible light out as it is the key precondition to see through smoke when looking at the images. The comparison images clearly illustrated the difference in the scene using CMOS camera and Emberion VS20 camera which allows imaging through the heavy smoke generated from the campfire.

In a similar application, we generated chemical or party smoke to demonstrate the capability of such cameras. It was observed that the SWIR images clearly see through the chemical smoke which was impossible to see through with the naked eye.

The future of SWIR

Emberion offers a dense roadmap where higher spectral resolution, mega-pixel densities and frame rates up to 400 frames per second(fps) will be released over the near term.

Soon we will start to offer high speed 400fps cameras for optical sorting and other markets. Additionally, the technical team are developing an ultra-broadband solution that will cover from Vis-SWIR-MWIR for simultaneous imaging in order to enable broadband surveillance and hyperspectral imaging. It has major benefits including:

  • A Wide spectral range from Visible to Extended SWIR up to 2000nm with a tuneable peak
  • A High Dynamic Range which offers better contrast and detection of bright and dark objects at the same time
  • Up to 400 frames per second GigE compatibility (Full VGA) allowing the possibility of detection of objects in high-speed conveyor belts e.g. in optical sorting of food and waste recycling
  • Monolithic integration for ease of manufacturing and scale up of manufacturing processes
  • High-performance sensor, low noise with novel quantum dot material solution providing affordable e cameras compared to incumbent technologies

Emberion’s current product VS20 camera VGA resolution camera enables various applications in the machine vision industry, surveillance, safety and security, defence, optical sorting, semiconductor imaging, medical, automotive, laser beam profiling. Particular examples include water peak detection at 1920nm which has the maximum contrast levels, and PVC detection beyond 1700nm in waste recycling with our cameras due to the extended range of our sensors.

The sensors have high pixel operability greater than 99.98% and HDR up to 120dB. The images with our cameras enable detection of both bright and dark objects and allows for multispectral imaging and enabling hyperspectral solutions making it a key enabler for security, safety and fire industry.

Seeing through smoke or harsh conditions would provide added advantage in surveillance and fire safety applications as it can assist with early detection and assessment of the scene due. It can help fire safety professionals in heavy smoke environments to check for trapped individuals or objects through glass windows or in a rescue operation using SWIR cameras. These cameras have a wide range of use and the form factor can vary allowing fire safety professionals to use them as handheld units or the smaller size cameras as detachable body gear units for flexibility in operation.

Growth ahead for UAE Fire Safety and Rescue Tools and products market

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Fire Safety and Rescue Tools and Products market to experience growing demand due to rising number of construction projects and rising preference of technologically advanced tools & equipment according to a report by Ken Research.

The report suggests that the Fire Safety and Rescue Tools & Products market in UAE is expected to grow further in the near future, with increasing adoption of newer technologies and government initiatives aimed to make rescue and firefighting activities more safer and successful.

The introduction for policies such as making Emergency Call (eCall) System mandatory in all vehicles in 2020, will help fast track rescue activities. Construction and Infrastructure projects such as Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030, would mean rising demand for establishment of industry specific firefighting units.

This has also coincided with the rise in number of fire accidents in UAE within the study period. This would mean a growing requirement for firefighting products as the construction sector grows.

There is also a growing focus of UAE Government towards local manufacturing and digital streamlining of civil services will boost the fire safety product market.

The tender based market, along with rising preference of battery operated tools are said to be some of the growth drivers of the rescue tools and products market in UAE.

Exclusive: Super Vac examines battery platform compatibility for rescue tools

With so many fire tools now powered by name brands, Super Vac looks at the offering from key players in the battery power industry: DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, IDEX and Holmatro.

Hand Tools

DeWalt’s 18V/56V MAX FLEXVOLT battery switches voltage when crews change tools, allowing these batteries to power more than 250+ products across the 18V MAX and 56V MAX systems. AMKUS Rescue Systems, a trusted name in the rescue equipment industry has partnered with DeWalt to distribute select MAX products to the fire industry.

Makita’s XGT 40V battery powers roughly 80 different Makita XGT MAX tools, including cordless drills, demo hammers, impact drivers and more. The XGT battery is designed for high-demand applications that typically would use corded, gas or air power sources. Makita batteries also feature a triple-layer structure for water and dust resistance.

Milwaukee is developing to its M18 REDLITHIUM series, providing up to 2.5 times more runtime and 20% more power than other lithium-ion batteries. This one battery system powers more than 200 Milwaukee M18 hand tools.

IDEX Fire & Safety is favoured in the industry for its patented 1P68-rated EWXT/E3 batteries (capable of operating underwater), IDEX and its LUKAS rescue tool brand have yet to introduce small hand tools to the market – departments may want to keep an eye on IDEX’s future innovations.

While Holmatro doesn’t offer battery-powered “hand tools,” the manufacturer has one of the most well-rounded lists of assist tools and rescue accessories to complement its EV0 3 rescue tools, including jacks, struts, wedges, lifting bags and more. You’ll have to put in a little elbow grease, that’s all.

Rescue Saws

DeWalt offers a variety of battery-powered saws that can be utilised in the fire service, including cutoff saws, chainsaws and reciprocating saws. To further retrofit the DeWalt chainsaw for the rigors of the fire ground, Super Vac offers a battery chainsaw conversion kit that turns this ordinary 16″ wood-cutting saw into a RIT or overhaul saw.

Makita offers a battery-powered reciprocating saw in the 40V XGT line, and in its 18V LXT line, Makita sells both chainsaws and recipro saws. The Makita chainsaw can be equipped with a Super Vac conversion kit that modifies the saw with carbine chain, modified bar and depth gauge, all designed for RIT or overhaul operations on the fireground.

Milwaukee offers the popular SAWZALL, as well as a chainsaw, which both deliver up to 150 cuts per charge. The Milwaukee chainsaw can be further modified for the fireground with the Super Vac chainsaw conversion kit to allow the saw to cut through asphalt shingles, hurricane glass, roofing materials and more.

When it comes to cutting, IDEX doesn’t dabble too much in the small saw game – but some might say the brand’s StrongArm tool can fit in this portable cutting category. The StrongArm cuts through 3/8-inch rebar, Grade 43 Chain and two-by-four wood, and it can also spread and breach doors.

PPVS

Super Vac introduced the first-ever DeWalt battery-powered positive pressure fan to the industry in 2018. The fan operates off of dual 9.0Ah or 12.0Ah FLEXVOLT batteries. Available in a 16″, 18″ or 20″ model, the DeWalt-powered fan provides 40 minutes of run time (depending on battery selection) and 16,700-22,000 cmh (depending on model).

New for 2022, Super Vac introduced a lineup of Makita battery fans, powered by dual XGT 40V batteries (XC 4.0Ah or XC 5.0Ah). Like its DeWalt counterpart, Super Vac offers 16″, 18″ and 20″ Makita models. Output and run times vary based on Super Vac model, but range from 15,000-19,800 cmh in airflow and 40-50 minute in run time.

Super Vac offers two lines of Milwaukee fans, M18 and M28 battery-powered fans. Although Milwaukee is phasing out new M28 products, many fire departments still utilize these tools, so Super Vac developed an M28 lineup for compatibility with these tools. M28 batteries must be sourced through TNT, Genesis and Weber dealers that offer M28 rescue tools.

Last year, Super Vac introduced its 5.0Ah and 9.0Ah EWXT/E3 battery-powered 20″ fan to the market. Since that introduction, the fan manufacturer has added a 16 and 18″ variation. Per Super Vac’s special proprietary battery licensing agreement with IDEX, these fans and batteries are only available through authorized LUKAS dealers.

Finally, wait for it. Can we expect a EV0 3 battery-powered fan in the future? Maybe.

Lights

DeWalt offers a battery tripod that telescopes to 1.4m and offers variable brightness settings, up to 3,000 lumens. The light will operate for more than 11 hours on the lowest setting. Meanwhile, Command Light offers a 1.25mDeWalt-powered tripod with 2.27m telescoping reach. This tripod pairs with 10 different firefighter-favorite LEDs, featuring up to 28,000 lumens.

Makita offers a 1,100-lumen light and can provide up to 10 hours of light on this max setting. The light can be mounted on optional tripod. For higher lumens, Command Light offers 10 different Makita battery-powered tripod models, featuring the same fixture options, as well as tripod dimension as the earlier DeWalt model mentioned above.

Milwaukee offers a tripod series, featuring 1.1-1.4m extension and 1,400-6,000 lumens, depending on model. Milwaukee also sells portable flood lights and radius site lights in the M18 platform. For even more lumens, look to Command Light for Milwaukee battery-powered tripods, featuring Akron Revels, FRC Spectras, FireTech Helios and Whelen fixtures.

IDEX recently introduced the Scout, a 14,000-lumen scene light that can be used to provide lighting when crews are extricating patients. Like Super Vac, Command Light also arranged a special agreement to power three of its tripods with EWXT/E3 batteries, including the T50-AX-BW, which features two Akron Revels for 28,000 lumens.

Holmatro has engineered LED lighting into its cutters, spreaders and combo tools. Six bright lights provide illumination at night. These LEDs operate standard AA batteries and deliver six hours of continuous light.

Rescue Tools

AMKUS Rescue Systems powers its ion-battery 2.0 rescue tools with DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries. AMKUS offers three different cutters, two combis, four spreaders and two rams. Made of solid aluminium, AMKUS tools are between 13-30 cm shorter than competitor models, allowing first responders to work in cramped rescue quarters.

Makita pairs with Ogura, a 50-year-old Japanese manufacturer of rescue tools. The Ogura lineup includes 18V battery-powered combis, cutters, spreaders and rams and a battery-powered rebar cutter. The head or power unit of the Ogura’s RP Series can be changed at any time without disengaging from the work.

TNT, Genesis and Weber, power their rescue tools with Milwaukee. TNT offers both M18 and M28 cutters, spreaders, combis and rams, while Genesis and Weber build on the M28 platform.

Powerhouse in hydraulic rescue tools, LUKAS, offers cutters, spreaders, combis and rams are powered by IDEX EWXT/E3 batteries. LUKAS is renowned for its eDRAULIC watertight line of rescue tools that can operate in heavy rain, high water or even under water. And with new E3 technology, LUKAS prides itself on performance diagnostics.

Finally, Holmatro offers proprietary EVO 3 battery technology in its “world-leading rescue tools” line of cutters, combis, spreaders and rams. The IP54-rated EVO 3 battery features a brushless motor, a direct-drive pump and electronic speed control that work together in tandem to deliver continuous, optimally high tool speed.

Cutting edge solutions: Weber Rescue Systems showcases smart rescue equipment

The slogan “Let’s create future” has been WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS’ motto for quite some time. With the presentation of the new battery tool series at Interschutz 2022, the slogan has at last been realised. The innovative rescue equipment manufacturer demonstrates how digitalisation and networking – the leading theme of the trade fair – are also making their way into the fire department.

Just in time for the firefighting international trade fair, WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS is presenting the new SMART-FORCE tool series, which marks a milestone in rescue tool technology. Revolutionary cutting technologies, high-performance batteries from Milwaukee and the use of smart additional functions will make accident rescue significantly faster and more efficient in the future. In addition to digitalisation, underwater use, service and training are also taken into consideration with the new product series.

Intelligent rescue

With the introduction of the new device series, smart functions are integrated into the rescue device itself for the first time. The SMART-FORCE devices enable communication via WLAN/UMTS connection and offer numerous additional functions for device control and management within their own app, including a pressure display, a training and theft mode, and the ability to analyse the current device status.

“Visitors to Interschutz can look forward to a wealth of new possibilities here, which we will be demonstrating live at our booth,” says Patrick Allinger, Product Manager responsible for the smart features of the new rescue equipment.

In recent years, battery-powered devices have become the standard in firefighting technology, proving over time that they are in no way inferior to hose-bound devices. By switching to the Milwaukee M18 High-Output battery technology, this offers a major advantage for rescue forces as one battery can be used for all operations currently across the range of 17 SMART-FORCE rescue tools from WEBER RESCUE and over 200 compatible Milwaukee tools.

Additionally, thanks to a robust, waterproof and dustproof housing, the new devices are submersible regardless of whether it is fresh, salt or dirty water, thanks to the IP 68 design. This enables work even under extreme conditions, such as high water or vehicle recovery under water.

Smooth Cut technology

In addition to the SMART-FORCE devices, WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS is presenting a new cutter series with innovative cutting technology at Interschutz.

“The new SMOOTH CUT technology represents a quantum leap in cutting performance,” explains Product Manager Hannes Buchner. It allows us to ensure quiet, low-stress and therefore safe cutting performance with low weight.” The new technology has now also enabled the device capable of cutting through the strongest standard material F7 according to the American NFPA 1936 standard.

The new shape of the blade inserts means that only one roll pin needs to be changed. “This saves time and money. The Plus blade inserts can be changed by anyone in one minute directly at the point of use, and immediately resume working,” Buchner points out.

WEBER RESCUE continues to rely on forged blades that can withstand extreme loads. The forging process pre-shapes the material in the direction of the load, meaning the risk of blade breakage is greatly reduced even under extreme stress.

The new extreme U-shape makes it possible to grip the vehicle pillar even better, featuring an acute angle making them even sharper with two continuous teeth bite into the material and hold it at the pivot point during cutting.

Systemised crashing

The crash system presented as part of this year’s roadshow, the WEBER RESCUE Experience Tour, will also be presented to an international audience for the first time at Interschutz.

In co-operation with the S-GARD SAFETY TOUR, practice vehicles will be crashed live on the outdoor exhibition area. The crash system can be used to realistically recreate various scenarios for exercises. In addition to frontal, side and rear impacts on passenger cars, accident patterns on larger vehicles such vans and truck cabs can also be simulated. This is designed to make the exercises more realistic and optimally prepares firefighters for accidents like those that happen every day on our roads.

Flexible applications

Other product highlights from WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS at the show include the Handvario RIT-Tool, WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS’ recently developed hand-operated combination tool for rapid intervention teams (RIT) which functions completely independent of a power supply with hose or battery, enabling flexibility. The interchangeable tips and a wide range of accessories make it suitable for use in a variety of situations, from opening doors to pulling loads or pushing away obstacles.

The device can also be used under water up to a depth of 25 meters and its small size makes it easy to stow away and quick to deploy. Optimum cutting performance is ensured via high strength, forged lightweight blades. For user-friendly operation, the headpiece can be rotated 360-degrees.

The company is also promoting its compact battery-powered unit with an XL-sized hydraulic oil tank, which features a usable volume of five litres and allows the operation of any equipment combination. In Eco mode, the unit can run for up to ten hours and a connection to the external continuous power supply is also available.

Digital solutions

Digitalisation has long been a core topic for WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS. To drive development in this area, a separate subsidiary was founded – RESCUE DIGITAL SYSTEMS GmbH. The company develops individual and easy-to-use apps and software applications in the areas of: alerting, administration, training, accident prevention, rescue and many more.

The new product configurator for the RIT tool makes it possible to configure necessary accessories such as battery and tips as well as additional gadgets online. From this, a pdf document is automatically created, which can be sent to WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS as a request with one click.

With WEBER RESCUE System’s seismographic measurement via app, RETTERSeismo, vibrations and movements are detected via smartphone, enabling an early acoustic warning of the emergency forces in the event of uncontrolled changes in the situation. In addition, the data can also be evaluated for training purposes. The app’s multimode makes it possible to network up to 16 sensors that are attached to the object and track the operation or exercise in detail using mobile, providing data for handling the patient during the rescue of persons from buildings or accident vehicles and is a valuable support for the training of aid organisations.

Remote learning

Coronavirus and social distancing have shown that e-learning is an ideal complement to the training of rescue workers. WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS offers two platforms that are also available as an app: RETTERAcademy and WEBER RESCUE Academy

RETTERAcademy, the individual e-learning platform, allows organisations to create their own e-learning platform. In addition to creating their own learning content, the layout can also be customised to suit the organisation in question, with customisable colours or logos able to be selected to ensure a unique appearance. In the backend, organisation’s own courses, videos, knowledge tests and certificates can be stored. The courses and videos can be completed independently of time.

WEBER RESCUE Academy, the learning platform, provides courses, expert videos and materials on various WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS topics. This content can be purchased via the WEBER RESCUE online store and accessed in the individuals own account. A certificate of participation is issued upon completion of a course. WEBER RESCUE Academy and RETTERAcademy are also available as APP.

On WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS RETTER AR application, training takes place in a virtual environment. Exercises and scenarios such as a head-on car collision, a rear-end collision or a house fire can be projected into the real environment and trained without any risk. In addition, technical data on the respective equipment used can be called up. With the Pro version, it will soon also be possible to connect to multiple devices.

Raising the alarm

Finally, WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS is showcasing its RETTERAlarm offers a perfect supplement to alerting via radio detectors or the siren. RETTERAlarm makes it possible to alert emergency forces individually, in groups, or even subsequently again in a targeted manner, via either push notification, e-mail, SMS or voice call as appropriate to each emergency worker. It also offers other practical tools such as calendar for events or training services, readiness query, chat function, integration of smart home, alarm monitors for the fire station.

As an extension of RETTERAlarm, ZEUS offers even more efficient, comprehensive and detailed mission management. The display of situation maps as well as the display of deployment plans is possible. ZEUS offers the possibility to make an operation documentation, which can be used afterwards for the operation report.

Batteries now included: Super Vac explores firefighter tools

Super Vac discusses firefighter tool advancements in today’s lithium-ion-driven world

Batteries not included is an old disclaimer that seems to be null-and-void in today’s lithium-ion-driven world. In fact, most handheld tools on the fireground are available in some battery-powered variation, and as the technology continues to advance, the number of battery offerings, along with tools, keeps expanding. This in turn, creates a myriad of choices for departments to wade through. Here are a few of the many considerations to consider when considering battery inclusion.

Names you can trust

When it comes to a product, there are just some names you trust. Many fire tools are now powered by name brands that can be found on a store shelf, like DeWalt, Makita or Milwaukee. Millions around the world have come to trust these brands — firefighters included. Not only are these batteries trusted for their performance, but these platforms are designed to power hundreds of tools made by the very same battery manufacturer. As it turns out, many of these tools, like rescue saws, work lights and impact hammers, have a place on the fireground.

Roughly five years ago, several specialised fire equipment manufacturers recognised this shift and began to design their battery-powered tools around these platforms. In fact, Super Vac, a leader in ventilation equipment, introduced the first battery fan to be powered by dual DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries in 2018. Since that well-received introduction, Super Vac has added models that work with Makita XGT and Milwaukee M18 / M28 batteries, allowing these fans to be compatible with hundreds of other tools.

Expanding on this, Super Vac offers a battery chainsaw conversion kit that turns an ordinary 16” wood-cutting Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee or Echo battery saw into an overhaul or rapid intervention saw. Typically, battery-powered chainsaws are only ideal for cutting wood, but this kit equips the saw with a carbine tip chain capable of cutting through asphalt shingles, hurricane glass, roofing materials and more. The conversion is just a 2-minute transformation.

We should also mention the Super Vac battery fan can be powered by LUKAS EWXT/E3 batteries, admittedly not a battery you are going to find on just any store shelf, but we will get to proprietary batteries in a minute. First, let us finish our thoughts on universal batteries.

Super Vac is not the only manufacturer to drive this non-proprietary battery trend. Rescue system manufacturers, like AMKUS, TNT, Genesis and Weber, have also tapped into these off-the-shelf battery platforms, manufacturing a whole arsenal of cutters and spreaders that work off these battery favorites. AMKUS marries with DeWalt, while TNT, Genesis and Weber run off Milwaukee batteries.

Even emergency scene lighting manufacturers are getting in on the battery action. Just this year, Command Light (the leader in light towers) introduced a 1.25m tripod that pairs DeWalt FLEXVOLT, Makita XGT, Milwaukee M28 or LUKAS EWXT/E3 batteries with high-lumen LEDs made for the fireground, delivering 14,000-28,000 lumens depending on head selection. LUKAS also offers its own new battery-powered 14,000-lumen scene light, the Scout.

In short, departments can equip their crews with a myriad of lights, fans, saws, hand tools and rescue equipment all powered by the same batteries, making it easier to run their operations. Ask your crew what names they trust, and which tools they want to work together.

Proprietary Vs Non-Proprietary

The tools mentioned so far run on non-proprietary, easy-to-source batteries that are usually economical and can be picked up at the local hardware retailer. That said, there is still a place for proprietary batteries in the industry.

Proprietary batteries are made exclusively by a manufacturer to work only with their tools, and in special instances, with other manufacturers’ tools through licensing agreements. Usually, this equipment is very specialised and requires a more robust battery for the tools’ special operations. Several rescue tool manufacturers, like LUKAS and Holmatro, are renowned for the performance of their proprietary batteries (and tools). Since these specialised batteries are exclusive to the manufacturer, they can be harder to source – but on the flip side, departments can expect proprietary innovations with these proprietary platforms.

Mike Cannon, director of rescue sales for IDEX Fire and Safety, which includes LUKAS, says rescue tool batteries of 10 years ago could only deliver 15-20 cuts per battery charge. Now, these specialised batteries deliver as much as 9 amps, permitting 54 cuts in high-strength steels used in automobiles.

Additionally, the LUKAS battery features a Smart Dashboard display for real-time tool status and provides the industry’s first patented watertight design for underwater-operable use, allowing crews to work on automobiles in ditches, culverts and USAR applications. In the end, it is important to ask yourself what kind of performance you expect out of the tool, and what kind of run times you need to get the job done. And if you feel more confident in your battery tool knowing it can run off a back-up power sources, look for built-in AC options in select equipment, like fans and lights. Finally, weigh your propriety selection against the interchangeability your department might need.

Battery-Powered Planning

Creating a battery-powered arsenal requires planning. How will you keep equipment charged? Will you incorporate charging stations into your truck or at the station? How many back-up batteries will you keep on-hand? Will you allow crews to swap batteries with other tools, if necessary? Will you spec proprietary battery-powered rescue tools with other non-proprietary tools so you’re certain no one ever runs off with the rescue tool batteries? Do you anticipate long scenes that will require shore power operation? In short, like all your equipment, make sure your battery-powered tools are always ready to go.

Aside from equipment preparation, you will find that you can plan and organise space differently around these battery-powered tools. Lighter and more compact, this equipment often frees up space in already-compact vehicles. Let us go back to that Super Vac battery PPV. At 580 mm x 585 mm x 305 mm and just 20 kgs, Super Vac’s smallest battery fan can be stored on its side, and even upright, it is practically the size of a Honda portable generator. And speaking of generators, plan on ditching the expensive generator, along with power cords and hydraulic hoses that operate your old equipment – with all that extra space, you can stage your universal battery-powered tools in one truck compartment.

Your operations may even change. First-due engines can now run with fans on their apparatus because these battery-powered PPVs are smaller than old gas fans typically relegated to the second response unit. Additionally, engines are not usually equipped with light towers because of space limitations, but now, with compact, battery-powered tripods, there is no reason not to get light where it is needed most.

Still Not Sold On Battery Technology?

If you are still mulling over the switch from gas, electric or hydraulic power sources to battery, consider what there is to gain and lose.

Crews gain more time when deploying this battery-powered equipment, and during the Golden Hour when the first 60 minutes of an incident are the most critical to patient survival you will welcome the maneuverability and ease of starting any of these battery tools. Plus, there are no more constraints of power cords or hydraulic hose lengths during those vital moments. In short, departments gain vital time and extended reach with battery operations.

Now, what do you lose? The messy maintenance that comes with petrol and hydraulic tools, plus products of combustion that can adversely affect air quality, even when catalytic converters are used. Even after use, storing this equipment can contaminate apparatus compartments with their fumes and bad carcinogens. Also, with battery tools, crews can say goodbye noise pollution which can adversely affect fireground communication. Meanwhile, the decibel reading for Super Vac’s 18” variable-speed battery fan produces an 85 dB reading at 1 meter in front of the fan, and 75 dB from 3 meters, which is only slightly louder than the sound of a showerhead makes. With quieter equipment comes improved communication. With so much to gain, it’s no wonder batteries have become the inclusion on the fireground.
