Fostering future-ready firefighters at the International Fire Training Centre

Richard Gorst, Serco’s Director of Fire Capability, shares insights on International Fire Training Centre (IFTC)’s commitment to innovation, environmental stewardship, and preparing responders for future challenges

On the grounds of Teesside Airport, the International Fire Training Centre (IFTC) has been training fire services from the aviation and industrial sectors for over 40 years.

Thousands of international delegates train each year at the facility, which has an impressive 20 training rigs, specialist appliances, lab-equipped classrooms, and a VR suite.

We caught up with Serco’s new Director of Fire capability, Richard Gorst, to talk about the organisation’s past and present, as well as the future of firefighting and how innovation is essential.

What brought you to the International Fire Training Centre?

With previous experience as an Inspector with Her Majesty’s Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland, and after 2 years working with Capita in their fire business, first as Business Development Director and then Client Relationship Partner, I was looking for a new challenge that could leverage my experience of the fire market in the UK and internationally.

The IFTC is well known and well respected in the industry for its high-quality fire training, so when I heard they were looking for a new Director of Fire I was excited to find out more.

Many know the IFTC for its proud history and expertise in aviation fire management.

But what some may not realise, is that we also work across some of most demanding sectors, including industrial, offshore and maritime.

I was particularly interested to learn about the way the IFTC has evolved to become a full fire training service – teaching at all levels, from general workforce that need fire marshal training, through to professional experienced fire fighters.

How is IFTC reducing its environmental footprint?

We’ve made great strides and some innovative actions are helping to reducing our impact.

People who come to train with us can do so safe in the knowledge that they are training in a manner that is as environmentally friendly as possible.

All the water used in training is collected in a closed loop water system which uses a natural reed bed to filter the water.

We’re using a protein-based foam, which actually feeds the reeds, giving fire personnel and responders the chance to practice techniques using all media in a safe and controlled environment.

We’ve also recently moved away from kerosene and are testing Hydro Treated Vegetable Oil (HVO), for our liquid fuel fire training.

HVO, or Renewable Diesel as it is also known, is made from certified waste materials, making it fossil-free and non-toxic.

As a result, it doesn’t produce black smoke or create carbon deposits, but allows us to maintain the realism required from quality fire training.

Feedback has been incredibly positive, with customers appreciating the switch, which is helping to protect the planet, their health, and that of our staff.

Trainees can practice intervention techniques and tactics in a safe and realistic environment.

More to come on that project in future.

This important change is helping to cut net CO2 greenhouses gases from the centre by 90%, supporting the circular economy.

It also ties in with the values of our parent company, Serco, which has pledged to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

What’s IFTC’s approach to Virtual Reality (VR) and new technologies in training?

Virtual reality has its place, and we have had a VR provision at the centre since 2013.

But nothing beats the sensory experience that gets your heart racing and your blood pumping as the fight or flight response kicks in, when experiencing the real feel of a live fire.

The heat, the feel of the equipment, the sights and sounds all combine to give you the most real-life example of a fire for safe training.

VR simply can’t offer this experience, and most Chiefs would not want a situation where the first real fire their firefighters encounter is during an actual emergency.

Training with live fires prepares participants with the skills and confidence for when they face a real fire situation.

That said, innovation is crucial and something we fully embrace at the IFTC to ensure we are preparing our students for the future of firefighting too.

We’re excited to have unveiled our latest training package recently, a dedicated training course for electric and alternatively fuelled vehicles.

The change to electric is well underway with 40 million electric cars already in use worldwide, and we support the move for organisations to lessen their carbon footprint.

But we also need to ensure our fire and response teams are equipped to deal with this surge in lithium-ion batteries and the unique risks that they pose.

Aimed at responders who are likely to face an EV related incident following an RTC or developed fault, the course offers an unparalleled experience of the unique characteristics of an EV fire.

We know that it’s the first training in the UK – and possibly in the world – to offer hands-on practical experience of a real EV-involved situation.

We’re also the first to have invested in the ‘EV Simulator’, which brings the most realistic experience to our trainees.

Complete with an EV charging port, the unique simulator creates off-gassing vapours, thermal runaway sound effects and live directional flames.

And rather than one-time burn of actual vehicles, this incredibly realistic training is repeatable and controllable, and doesn’t introduce the toxic gasses to the training environment.

The two-day IFTC Electric Vehicle Responder course has been developed in partnership with international fire investigation specialist Martin Lown BEM from FireWiseUK Learning Academy.

Martin, served in the UK Fire and Rescue Service for 30 years and specialises in EVs and Alternative Fuelled Vehicles (AFVs).

Using his expertise, Martin designed and developed the simulator in partnership with Bridgehill Fire Blankets to provide a consistent and effective method to train how to suppress, contain, and manage EV fires and incidents.

Day one offers deep theoretical knowledge to underpin the learning, including pros and cons of the various EV fire suppression and containment options, recent case studies and myth debunking, risks and hazards, contamination cleanup, recovery and more!

On the second and final day, fire trained delegates will take part in practical ‘hot’ exercises to embed their learning, ranging from under-chassis battery misting and cooling, fire blanket application, ‘making safer’ protocol, trauma care and casualty extrication.

Delegates from other disciplines will observe the hot exercises and have the opportunity to participate in practical, preventative measures in a safe way.

The course culminates in a full incident role play where participants can test their learning and experience how it feels to be faced with an EV emergency.

Of course, we are always happy to adapt for our customers to tailor to their precise needs with our bespoke service.

What’s next for the IFTC?

We’ve entered a new era for the IFTC.

The recent investments by Serco, following securing a 10-year deal with Teesside Airport, demonstrate that we are very much here to stay, firmly quashing any misinformed rumours of closure.

Over the coming months and years, we will be further strengthening our links with industry and looking to expand our reach both in the UK and worldwide.

As always, we’ll continue to develop our courses in line with customer needs.

New Cross Fire Station, London, to host defibrillator training day for local residents

Defibrillator training day to enhance life-saving skills in London

As reported by the London Fire Brigade, New Cross Fire Station in London will hold a ‘Restart A Heart’ training day on Saturday, 5 October 2024.

The event is part of an initiative to teach residents in the Lewisham, New Cross, and Southwark areas how to access and effectively use defibrillators, which are crucial in cardiac arrest emergencies.

The station is encouraging local residents to book a session to learn these vital skills.

Sub Officer Michael Edwards, who is organising the event, highlighted the importance of this training: “With 80% of cardiac arrests happening in the home, it is vital that as many people as possible learn this lifesaving skill.

“It may be a loved one who suffers a cardiac arrest – and it’s crucial to begin CPR and defibrillation as soon as possible to help their chances of survival.”

Addressing the need for accessible defibrillators

The availability of defibrillators in the UK has been a point of concern, particularly in less affluent areas.

According to recent data, 61% of people do not feel confident using a defibrillator, and those living in deprived areas, where the risk of cardiac arrest is higher, often have less access to these life-saving devices.

Sub Officer Michael Edwards emphasised the need for more accessible defibrillators: “Defibrillators are disproportionately placed in affluent areas; we need to ensure they’re located in more locations.

“Anyone looking after a defibrillator – such as those in charge of pubs, sports clubs, community centres, churches, village halls – should make it accessible to the public 24/7.”

A personal story underscores the importance of defibrillators

The significance of defibrillators in saving lives is illustrated by the experience of Cassie Prins, who nearly lost her husband in 2018 due to a cardiac arrest.

She credits the quick action of two bystanders who used CPR and a defibrillator for saving his life.

Cassie supports the New Cross Fire Station initiative and encourages everyone to participate in the training: “Six years on and the availability of machines is even wider and every minute with a defib increases the chances of survival.”

She added: “The machines are so clever these days, they talk you through what you need to do and have pictures so it really is that simple. I would encourage everyone to book on the course.

“Our kids wouldn’t have had their dad without one and some everyday heroes.”

How to participate in the ‘Restart A Heart’ training day

The ‘Restart A Heart’ training sessions will be available on Saturday, 5 October 2024, at New Cross Fire Station, located at 266 Queens Road, London SE14 5JN.

Participants can book a 30-minute session between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm.

The sessions are free, and residents are encouraged to secure their place as soon as possible.

Record marks achieved by Zzeus Training’s July 2024 delegates

Zzeus Training: Record-breaking scores in BS 5839-1 qualification

In July 2024, participants in the BS 5839-1 qualification course at Zzeus Training achieved record-breaking scores.

The course, which has been offered since 2019, saw eleven out of forty delegates scoring 100%, the highest on record.

These high achievers were inducted into the exclusive ‘100% Club,’ a recognition program established by Zzeus Training in 2021.

The club aims to motivate fire alarm engineers by offering incentives for high performance, with a notable rise in average scores from 85% to over 92% since its inception.

Introduction of new awards and recognition

To further encourage excellence, Zzeus Training has introduced the Gold Standard award for candidates achieving scores above 90%.

This initiative has led to increased motivation among participants, with many attending the courses specifically aiming to join the ‘100% Club.’

The new awards have been well-received, and the impact on overall performance is evident in the increasing number of high scores.

The program has successfully fostered a culture of excellence within the fire alarm engineering community.

Notable achievers in July 2024

Among the top performers in July 2024 was Caleb Houston, an 18-year-old Junior Estimator from London-based Pacific Fire & Security.

Houston, one of the youngest to join the ‘100% Club,’ expressed his appreciation for the support he received during the course, stating: “I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent at the Zzeus course; the staff were always open to questions and were keen to offer help when needed.”

Houston’s achievement highlights the effectiveness of Zzeus Training’s approach in nurturing young talent within the industry.

Comments from Zzeus Training’s leadership

Dr. Tom Brookes, MSc PhD CEng FIET, the Founder and Managing Director of Zzeus Training, emphasized the importance of empowering engineers in their profession.

He stated: “At Zzeus, we focus on empowering engineers. Rather than just issuing a certificate that might end up in a file, we provide something tangible for engineers to display with pride.”

FLAIM announces new 2024 software release for workplace fire safety training

New software from FLAIM release focuses on maritime fire training

FLAIM has announced its latest software update for Workplace Safety – Fire (WSF)

The update, known as the R2 2024 Release, includes new features and scenarios designed to enhance fire safety training.

This update is available to FLAIM WSF V3 customers with active subscriptions.

The new release introduces five scenarios aimed specifically at maritime fire safety.

These scenarios cover various fire hazards, including naval engine room oil fires, electrical fires, bunkhouse fires, corridor electrical fires, and galley oven fires.

These scenarios aim to provide more realistic and targeted training environments for maritime personnel.

New training mode and autoplay feature

The 2024 release introduces a new Training Mode feature designed to help trainers streamline the training process.

Trainers can assign specific playlists to a system, and when Training Mode is activated, only the relevant scenarios will appear for trainees.

This reduces distractions and allows trainees to focus on the appropriate exercises.

A Capture account is required to assign playlists.

Autoplay has also been added as a new feature in this release.

This function ensures that trainees can only access the first scenario on their playlist, returning to the lobby after each scenario is completed.

The playlist automatically restarts for the next trainee once all scenarios have been completed.

Safety boundary enhances virtual training

A key feature of the new release is the Safety Boundary, aimed at improving the physical safety of trainees during virtual reality training.

The Safety Boundary feature creates a virtual barrier within the headset, ensuring that trainees remain within a designated space during training.

If a trainee crosses this boundary, they are automatically removed from the virtual world and can see their physical surroundings.

This feature helps prevent physical hazards by ensuring trainees stay within the safe training area.

Updating the software

FLAIM customers with active subscriptions will receive a notification about the software update the next time they use their headset.

The software update can be followed directly through the headset interface, with instructions provided.

This software update is only available to customers with an active subscription.

Those with expired subscriptions are encouraged to reactivate their accounts to gain access to the new features.

FLAIM workplace safety software release improves fire training with new features: Summary

FLAIM has released the R2 2024 update for its Workplace Safety – Fire (WSF) software, introducing five new maritime-focused fire safety scenarios and several new features.

New features include a Training Mode that allows trainers to control the scenarios trainees see, an Autoplay function that cycles through a playlist of scenarios, and a Safety Boundary feature that creates a virtual barrier for safe training.

This release is designed to enhance the training experience and improve safety in virtual training environments.

Training techniques to develop effective commanders

Dr Katherine Lamb explores innovative training techniques for future commanders, focusing on hybrid, augmented, and virtual reality for comprehensive skill development

It is well reported that incident numbers attended by the UK Fire and Rescue Services have reduced over the last decade, partially because of the improved fire safety education conducted by dedicated teams in community fire safety, and other related activities.

During the period 2008-2018, there was a 20% reduction in total fire calls, however, in 2019, there was a small annual rise in the number of fires attended, and in particular, secondary fires.

Therefore, the total number of fires a firefighter will attend in a career starting in 2020 is likely to be significantly fewer than a firefighter who began their career in 1990.

As such an alternative strategy is required to compensate for the reduced opportunities to ‘learn on the job’ to meet the same learning outcomes required of all roles, firefighter to chief fire officer.

Clearly, this is not easy: fire environments are dynamic, multi-faceted, typically incorporate large volumes of “complex data” and are personnel or resource heavy to simulate accurately.

However, the employment of hybrid reality, augmented reality and virtual reality training has demonstrated success across several services.

Enhancing learning outcomes through simulation

A significant proportion of firefighter operational training is centred on technical equipment use, and it is not always easy or possible to create a physical space where training with them is easy.

Yet virtual worlds, with their limitless possibilities, allow us to create practically any scenario and with any combination of tools to use.

The introduction of new tactical options would traditionally follow a relatively slow uptake-arc, as only a certain number of operators can be familiar with it initially, and we would expect an increase in usage as awareness is gradually built up.

However, in a virtual environment, all firefighter or commanders can experiment with all potential tactical options, as there is no limit on availability or scenario complexity.

Integration of tactical options in virtual environments

During Fire officer training, there are elements of role or support functions which are not suited to virtual worlds, these generally involve human interactions, and the application of dynamic administrative tasks like decision logging and information processing.

 To improve the accuracy and value of the training this dynamic is often achieved using actors, role players and “props” to augment the virtual training environment.

In conjunction with this development in the training environment, and the recognition that training now plays a central part in building a commander’s capabilities, considerable work on understanding and developing these behaviours associated with decision making, have been the focus of several major research projects.

In addition, the National Fire Chiefs Council had identified that commanders’ judgement in high pressure situations, especially where risk appetite was concerned, needed some consideration.

Effectively they recognised that this was a “human factors” consideration, where the commander themselves was the factor posing the greatest risk (to themselves, the public and to the people they are in command of).

Command decision making skills and the application of human factors throughout training are now widely recognised as essential components in the development of a fire officers skill set.

Fire Services are effectively required to train commanders in those skills, allow them to develop and maintain them and systematically record and evaluate the strength of those skills.

The effective command model

The Effective Command training methodology aligns with the five principles of simulator-based exercise team training.

Principle 1: Develop learning objectives and expected performance standards.

Through the use of scenarios, incident commanders are presented with unexpected events or dilemmas.

These cues stimulate the expected behaviours and allow relevant behavioural markers to be practiced or demonstrated.

Principle 2: Train the team or individuals.

Training the individual in non-technical skills is often overlooked during training and development of Fire Officers.

Principle 3: Use a structured observation tool.

The structured observation tool Effective Command is used to capture positive behaviours as well as areas for improvement.

The framework is also used as a basis of the training design, used to provide feedback and for self-reflection by the student.

Principle 4: Provide feedback during a structured debrief.

Feedback is given face-to-face immediately following a scenario-based exercise, and behaviours observed during the exercise are highlighted.

Principle 5: Repeat the Training regularly

It has been identified in a recent study that structured and holistic training and assessment systems, like Effective Command, provide an efficient and auditable way of developing and assessing Fire Officers.

Enabling data trends to be fed into subsequent training cycles to maximise continual organisational development.

 Through the employment of a consistent behavioural framework, the process of developing essential knowledge and behaviours begins earlier and ensures firefighters are safer and more effective both immediately and as future officers.

Specialist training for heavy vehicle rescue

Michael Maybin, Director of Operations, IRRTC Rescue Ltd, explores the importance of specialised training for heavy vehicle rescues and its impact on responder readiness

For emergency services, the ability to respond effectively to incidents involving heavy vehicles is crucial.

I have witnessed first-hand the importance of comprehensive training programs tailored to professional rescue organisations, such as UK Fire Services, and their counterparts globally.

This article will delve into the benefits of offering specialised heavy vehicle rescue training, highlighting the critical aspects of exposure to heavy vehicles, the unique challenges posed by their design and fuel systems, and the indispensable knowledge and skills required to manage such complex scenarios.

The importance of heavy vehicle rescue training

Heavy vehicle rescue operations differ significantly from standard motor vehicle extrications due to the sheer size, weight, and complexity of the vehicles involved.

Training professional rescue organisations in these specialised techniques ensures that responders are well-prepared to handle the unique challenges they might face.

Such training enhances operational efficiency, reduces response times, and ultimately saves lives.

HGV tractor units are often hard to access and cost prohibitive for UK Fire Services to get exposure to.

I was interviewed on the Fire Fighters Podcast Episode #267, in December 2023, about overcoming the challenge of heavy vehicle rescue, and fundamentally this is why IRRTC Rescue offer the course.

Benefits of specialised training for professional rescue organisations

  1. Improved response capability: Specialised training equips rescue teams with the knowledge and skills to handle heavy vehicle incidents efficiently. This includes understanding the structural integrity of heavy vehicles, utilising appropriate tools and techniques, and managing the scene effectively.
  2. Enhanced safety for responders: Our training emphasises the importance of safety protocols when dealing with heavy vehicles. This includes understanding the risks associated with working at height, the increased weight and strength of these vehicles, and the potential hazards posed by modern fuel systems.
  3. Adaptability to technological advancements: As vehicle technology evolves, so too must the training for rescue personnel. With the advent of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hydrogen fuel cells, compressed natural gas (CNG), biomethane, and hydrogen/electric systems, responders must be adept at identifying and managing the unique risks associated with each type of fuel system as the future of these vehicles evolve.
  4. International organisation for standardisation: ISO 17840, can be used world-wide for first and second responders as is a world-wide standard in cooperation with Euro NCAP, SIS and ISO with their ‘Know before you approach!’ ethos.

Exposure to heavy vehicles: a critical learning component

Hands-on exposure to heavy vehicles is a cornerstone of effective rescue training.

This practical experience allows responders to familiarise themselves with the physical and operational characteristics of these vehicles, fostering a deeper understanding that theoretical training alone cannot provide.

IRRTC prides itself on offering this for real world use and benefit.

Real-world training scenarios

Training programs we incorporate include realistic factors that prepare the responders for what they will encounter in the field.

This includes the opportunity to look around new HGVs, LGVs, inside and outside, underneath them and trailers to see the operating systems and how they function.

This is delivered by an HGV recovery expert.

Heavy vehicles, particularly those in the transport and construction industries, often involve working at height.

Our training includes the use of specialised equipment, working platforms, safe systems of work

Heavy vehicles present unique challenges due to their increased weight and structural strength.

The cohort attending must learn how to use heavy-duty cutting and lifting equipment effectively to extricate trapped individuals safely.

Addressing the challenges of modern fuel systems

The shift towards alternative fuel systems in heavy vehicles introduces new risks and complexities for rescue operations.

Understanding these systems is vital for ensuring the safety of both responders and victims.

For HGVs in UK the number already on the road shouldn’t be underestimated.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

BEVs are becoming increasingly common in the heavy vehicle sector with DAF presently leading the sector.

Yet many manufactures offer an alternative fuelled heavy goods vehicle, as for a fleet operator its biggest cost is fuel (diesel) at over thirty percent.

Alternative fuelled vehicles are the fleet operator’s future.

However, with BEVs, their high-voltage battery systems may pose significant risks during rescue operations.

Our training covers identifying the location of batteries and understanding the potential for thermal runaway developing into thermal cascade.

This could be caused by a type of abuse, i.e.

impact from collision, a fault within the traction battery, or even first or second responder activity.

It also explains how to safely isolate the electrical system with the IAIIM response protocol: Identify > Assess > Immobilise > Isolate > Monitor.

This is done using key information such as make, model and year of vehicle that is specific to that vehicle.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells are another emerging technology in heavy vehicles.

The highly flammable nature of hydrogen requires specialised training to manage potential risks.

This includes understanding how damage to tanks and systems could cause hydrogen leaks, which can lead to explosive situations if not handled correctly falling within remit potentially of the DSEAR (Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmosphere Regulations) in UK.

 It’s also important to link in with manufacturers and fleet operators to share the most up to date knowledge and infrastructure status.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Biomethane

CNG and biomethane are increasingly used in heavy vehicles for fleet use in UK by many large brands and organisations, due to their lower environmental impact.

However, these fuels present unique challenges:

One is pressurised fuel systems – knowledge of high-pressure fuel systems safely is essential to prevent accidental releases or risks to responders.

Another is firefighting techniques, understanding that there are specific firefighting techniques required for gas fires, which differ from conventional liquid fuel fires.

Hydrogen/Electric

These systems that combine hydrogen and electric power introduce a new layer of complexity. Our training identifies:

  • Dual-system management: Understanding how to manage incidents involving both hydrogen and electric systems, ensuring both are safely isolated and neutralised.
  • Integrated risk assessment: Conducting thorough risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards associated with these systems.
  • Examples of current vehicles: Some of these vehicles are manufactured here in UK, so knowledge of them and Emergency Response Guides are vital.

Conclusion

Specialised heavy vehicle rescue training is an invaluable investment for professional rescue organisations.

By providing responders with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience necessary to handle the unique challenges posed by heavy vehicles, we enhance their capability to save lives while ensuring their own safety.

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, ongoing training and adaptation are essential to stay ahead of emerging risks.

By emphasising the importance of exposure to heavy vehicles and understanding modern fuel systems, we can build a robust foundation for effective and safe heavy vehicle rescue operations.

Innovative EV fire training course launched in the UK

As reported by the International Fire Training Centre (IFTC), the UK’s first dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) fire course has been developed at their facility.

The course aims to provide emergency responders with practical training in managing EV-involved fires and raising critical safety awareness.

Managed and operated by Serco, the course features an innovative ‘EV fire simulator’ designed to facilitate multiple scenarios for effective and repeatable training.

The simulator includes electric vehicle thermal runaway and fire simulation, enabling fire personnel to practice fire suppression techniques, such as vehicle fire blanket application and under chassis cooling.

Non-fire first responders will also participate in precautionary measures like vehicle fire blanket application and observe live fire exercises, experiencing the simulated conditions of an EV fire.

Collaboration with experts enhances course development

The IFTC has partnered with Martin Lown BEM from FireWiseUK Learning Academy to develop the simulator.

Martin, a seasoned expert with 30 years in the UK Fire and Rescue Service, specialises in vehicle fire investigation and alternative-fuelled vehicles (AFVs) and EVs.

His expertise, combined with the engineering capabilities of Bridgehill Fire Blankets, has resulted in a state-of-the-art training tool.

Martin stated: “With the worldwide green agenda dictating the transition to zero emission vehicles, and the subsequent rise in AFVs on our roads, vehicle risk is changing rapidly, as numbers of AFVs increase, dramatically.”

He highlighted the challenges first responders face in keeping up with the rapid advancements in EV technology and the associated risks of lithium-ion batteries.

The new course aligns with the IMI National Occupational Standards EV02a & EV02b for Electric Vehicle Response, providing essential awareness and knowledge of EV thermal events and fires under realistic training conditions.

Background on the International Fire Training Centre

The IFTC, managed by Serco, is renowned for its comprehensive aviation fire training programs.

For many years, firefighters from around the world have trained at IFTC, utilising its multiple fire simulators for real-time emergency exercises.

The centre’s export success since 1996 includes training thousands of delegates annually, with clients ranging from NATO to various international nations.

The 9-acre site features appliances for training exercises and an onsite water treatment facility that processes runoff, allowing for the use of diverse fire extinguishing media, including foam and powder.

This versatility in training media is typically restricted in other settings but is available at IFTC due to its advanced facilities.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) has announced that the redevelopment plans for the Service’s Training Centre in Whitley Wood have been approved by Reading Borough Council.

The original schedule for the redevelopment was set for 2025 but was brought forward after a significant internal flood in 2022, which caused damage beyond economical repair.

Modern and sustainable design

The approved plans involve demolishing the existing Training Centre and an aging office cabin.

These will be replaced by a single two-storey, modular building.

The new facility will incorporate modern construction methods and sustainability features, including solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.

The upgrades are intended to support a more diverse workforce and demonstrate the Fire Authority’s commitment to providing high standards of training to firefighters in Royal Berkshire, enhancing safety for both staff and the community.

Premier Modular Limited has been selected to design, manufacture, and install the new building.

By opting for a modular building, RBFRS aims to reduce both financial and environmental costs and minimise disruption to neighbours and training operations.

Work on the new Training Centre is set to begin imminently, with completion and opening expected in summer 2025.
