In municipal environments, platforms must support rescue and suppression at the same time. In industrial environments, the main demand is often high-output suppression. Fires in petrochemical or oil and gas settings can involve hazardous materials and pressurised systems. Industrial aerial platforms are often built with larger water and foam capacity and higher pump performance. In some industrial models, the rescue cage can be omitted in favour of water and foam towers, with powder systems added where the risk profile requires them.

How aerial firefighting platforms improve urban and industrial fire access

In a high-rise incident, internal access can be delayed, obstructed or unsafe. An aerial platform gives crews an external route to the working area and allows firefighting or rescue tasks to be carried out from a controlled elevated position.

The cage is central to municipal use. It allows personnel and equipment to be positioned at height, supporting rescue work and suppression without relying solely on internal stairwells or fixed systems.

How Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service uses the Bronto F70RPX

Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service provides a practical example of how an aerial platform can be configured around local operating conditions. The service operates one of the tallest aerial rescue platforms in Germany, the Bronto F70RPX, known locally as the TMF 70. The 70-metre platform was developed in close cooperation with Hamburg and tailored to the city’s requirements.

The F70RPX can operate in winds up to 12.5 m/s. An integrated anemometer monitors wind speed continuously and automatically limits movement if conditions exceed the safe threshold. The Bronto+ control system monitors outrigger width, boom angle, platform load and other operating parameters to support safe deployment.

For Hamburg, the platform was acquired to close a defined operational need. Lars Scheugl, Instructor at Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The F70RPX is a great acquisition for us. It improves our ability to reach high places and is vital for the city of Hamburg.”

The platform provides a working height of 70 metres and a horizontal outreach of 33 metres. At 40 metres, the boom still delivers 28 metres of outreach, supporting up-and-over access across roofs and façades. The water monitor can provide a throw distance of up to 100 metres using water, foam or a combined mixture. The unit also includes an integrated Cobra Cutting System. This uses high-pressure water mixed with abrasive material to cut through walls or roofs from the outside, allowing crews to begin attacking a fire without entering the structure.

Operational experience shaping aerial firefighting platform design

The Hamburg platform was jointly designed with technical coordination by Thorsten Ahrens, Technical Procurement of Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service. Scheugl and his team also contributed operational experience from special vehicle use and active firefighting.

This cooperation influenced control logic and cage layout. The aim was to produce a platform suited to Hamburg’s working environment, including industrial facilities and maritime exposure.

The result is a platform that supports work at height and below ground level. The hydraulic outrigger system and control mechanics support stability at full outreach or on uneven terrain.

Scheugl described how this applies in port conditions: “When we’re working here in the harbour, we often face accessibility issues involving ships and various harbour operations. With this unit we can perform rescue operations and other work below ground level.”

After initial training by Bronto Skylift, Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service developed a dedicated training programme for special-purpose vehicles. Clear control layouts and an intuitive control system helped crews bring the unit into service.

Why access and control remain critical in aerial firefighting operations

The role of an aerial platform is best understood through the operational problem it solves. Fire and rescue services need to place crews and extinguishing agents where ground access is limited, unsafe or too slow.

A municipal service may need cage capacity and manoeuvrability for rescue work. An industrial operator may need higher foam output and remote operation. A port authority may need reach above deck level and below quay level.

Height alone does not define capability. Outreach and stability shape how the equipment performs, along with below-ground access and extinguishing output.

ZIEGLER delivers six new HLF vehicles to Göttingen

ZIEGLER has delivered six new HLF 20 firefighting vehicles to the Göttingen Professional and Volunteer Fire Departments.

According to the announcement, by procuring these identical firefighting vehicles, the city of Göttingen is sending a clear signal of its commitment to the ongoing modernization of its firefighting equipment.

An expanded emergency fleet

The new vehicles will form an important part of the emergency fleet in the future and are designed for a

The HLF 20 are built on a MAN TGM 13.320 4×4 BL chassis with 235 kW (320 HP) engine power and a
wheelbase of 3,950 mm.

The superstructure is based on the latest-generation of ALPAS and is controlled
via the Z-Control operating concept.

The crew is accommodated in the ZIEGLER Z-Cab with a group crew (1+7), which is easily accessible via
a three-step entry system.

The built-in ZIEGLER FPN Z-Pump 10-2000-1H is complemented by a water tank with a capacity of 1,600 liters. In addition, a 120-liter foam tank is available.

This ensures that the vehicles are ideally equipped for both conventional firefighting operations and other operations involving foam.

Numerous practical solutions have also been integrated for day-to-day operations – including a swivel
wall in the equipment compartment, a PUSH hygiene board, a roof box, an Action Tower and a 230-volt

Hyundai unveils firefighting robot for hazardous fire scene deployment

Firefighting robot video follows agency handover

Hyundai Motor Group has released a video introducing its Unmanned Firefighting Robot after the system was unveiled and donated to South Korea’s National Fire Agency on 24 February 2026.

The video, titled A Safer Way Home, was released on 2 March and presents the robot as a disaster response platform developed with Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, Hyundai Rotem, Hyundai Mobis and the National Fire Agency (NFA).

The Unmanned Firefighting Robot is designed for deployment in active fire scenes where collapse, explosion, high temperatures, toxic gas or dense smoke make access difficult for firefighters.

It remotely identifies conditions at the scene, approaches the source of the fire and extinguishes the blaze.

The video includes field footage, photographs and testimony from active-duty firefighters.

Im Pal Soon, a rescue team leader from the Central 119 Rescue Headquarters who operates the Unmanned Firefighting Robots, provides narration in the campaign video.

The footage also includes a factory fire in North Chungcheong Province, South Korea, on 30 January, which the Group described as the first real-world use case for the technology.

Robot design and operational features

According to Hyundai Motor Group, the robot is based on HR-SHERPA, a multi-purpose unmanned vehicle developed for military use, and combines remote operation with vision enhancement and a thermal management package.

Its body includes a self-spraying water-cooling system and an insulation structure intended to support operation in temperatures of up to 800 degrees Celsius and protect the battery and electric control systems.

The robot includes an advanced self-driving assistance system that recognises terrain and obstacles to reduce collision risk in curved, narrow or obstacle-dense environments.

It has a top speed of 50 kph and can handle inclines of up to 60 percent longitudinally and 40 percent transversely.

It can also cross vertical barriers up to 300 mm.

An AI vision-enhancing camera uses short and long wave infrared thermal imaging sensors to transmit real-time video in dense smoke and high heat.

A high-pressure self-illuminating hose reel uses a photoluminescent hose that emits light in dark conditions and is intended to support orientation and escape routes in low-visibility spaces such as underground areas.

The 6×6 in-wheel motor system places a motor in each wheel, allowing 360-degree rotation in place and supporting manoeuvrability in confined spaces.

Hyundai Motor Group said the electrical modules are waterproof and dustproof, and that removing the need for a separate drive shaft improves drive efficiency and control.

Future firefighting role set out by agency and Group

The Group said the robot’s longer-term role is as a data acquisition platform that digitises disaster scenes and uses machine learning to analyse conditions such as smoke volume, fire scale and temperature.

The future plan described by the Group, the NFA and the National Fire Research Institute is for a fully autonomous system that can assess conditions, analyse the fire’s origin and suppression priorities, and calculate an extinguishing method after deployment.

Seung-ryong Kim, Acting Commissioner of the National Fire Agency, said: “The true value of this robot is not merely its heat resistance or fire suppression power, but its role as a ‘Physical AI’ that operates in actual disaster sites.

“In extreme environments where firefighters cannot enter, it will collect and learn from real-world operational data to develop into a sophisticated disaster response platform.

“This will usher in an era of hybrid convergence where humans and robots overcome their respective limitations, marking a ‘paradigm shift for AI in firefighting.’”

The Group said it plans to continue developing related technologies and expanding support for on-site response capabilities, and linked the robot campaign to other support programmes for uniformed services in Korea.

Terex Corporation has completed its merger with REV Group, creating a combined specialty equipment manufacturer.

Terex Corporation announced the completion on 2 February 2026 in Norwalk, Connecticut.

The combined company will trade on the New York Stock Exchange as Terex Corporation under the ticker NYSE: TEX.

REV stock has ceased trading and is no longer listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Terex’s portfolio now includes purpose-built fire appliances as part of its expanded specialty vehicle range.

The merger brings additional fire and emergency vehicles into Terex’s product line through REV Group’s existing capabilities.

Terex said its fire vehicles are designed for emergency services alongside ambulances and other specialty apparatus.

Terex said the combination with REV Group is expected to deliver $75 million of run-rate value in 2028.

Terex said about 50% of that run-rate value is expected to be achieved over the next 12 months.

According to the IAFF, three manufacturers – REV Group, Rosenbauer and Oshkosh – now control more than 70% of US apparatus production.

The union said this consolidation has led to prices doubling and delivery times stretching from two to four years.

It argued that departments are being forced to operate outdated and unreliable vehicles, increasing risks during emergency response.

According to the IAFF, both cities have been unable to modernise their fleets because of delayed deliveries and cancelled orders.

Long delivery times strain city budgets and planning

Johnson said: “The city council has been forced to totally rewrite its budget process to account for the long delivery delays, and they’re now having to project funding three to four years out.

“While the current council is supportive, who knows if the council that’s in power three or four years from now will have the same mindset.”

He added: “The previous procurement process just doesn’t work anymore.

“We’re now planning our new orders five to 10 years out.

“It’s the only way to account for the delays.”

The IAFF said this long-term planning is now becoming the norm for departments across North America.

IAFF urges federal scrutiny of industry consolidation

In the same post, the IAFF said it is advocating for stronger oversight of fire apparatus manufacturers.

The organisation noted that General President Edward Kelly testified before the US Senate, warning that consolidation in the sector was endangering firefighters and the public.

Kelly told senators: “The data compiled by the IAFF and others leads one to conclude that these market conditions were planned and executed by corporate interests that do not share our collective goal of public safety.”
