According to Ziegler, the agreement was signed on 17 April 2025 with the Airport Fire Service of Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) following a competitive Europe-wide tender process.

The vehicles are expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

Fire station upgrade prompted new vehicle procurement

The Airport Fire Service at Groningen Airport Eelde relocated to a new facility in 2023, directly at the airport site.

Ziegler reported that the existing fire engines were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to their age, with spare parts becoming harder to obtain.

It stated that the replacement of the vehicles was necessary to maintain the operational capacity of the fire service.

New vehicles to improve efficiency and environmental performance

Rob van den Bergh, Manager Airport Operations at GAE, said the new vehicles were expected to improve environmental and operational standards at the airport.

Van den Bergh said: “We are delighted to be working with Ziegler and to have signed this contract. The new vehicles are significantly more environmentally friendly and efficient than the previous ones – something we attach great importance to at our airport. We are really looking forward to the new vehicles!”

According to Ziegler, the Z6 ARFF vehicles are built with updated systems that meet international safety standards.

Features of the Z8

The Z8 is equipped with two traction motors that enable acceleration and a top speed of 140 km/h- even under demanding climactic and geographical conditions. As a result of ZIEGLER’S extinguishing technology, the Z8 is designed to ensure efficiency in operations where every second counts.

Lhasa-Gonggar Airport, which is located at an altitude of 3,570 metres above seal level is a transportation hub in Western China. The delivery of the ZIEGLER is helping to further increase safety at this location and raise the international standard in the field of airport fire protection technology.

Delivery had been delayed due to supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic and the Ukraine conflict, with the first vehicles finally handed over in April 2024.

The vehicles will operate at various Bundeswehr locations across Germany.

Vehicle specifications and testing

The FLKfz HLF firefighting vehicles are built on MAN TGM 18.320 4×4 chassis with 320 horsepower engines.

Each vehicle features a 2,500-litre water tank, a 150-litre foam tank, and the latest ALPAS and Z-Control systems.

Extensive testing was conducted at the “NBC Defence and Legal Protection Tasks” school in Stetten am Kalten Markt. Selected Bundeswehr personnel were trained to use the vehicles safely and pass on this knowledge.

The GW Hygiene is a vehicle that is not used for direct damage control during operations, but specifically to protect the emergency services and to restore the operational readiness of personnel.

How does this vehicle improve firefighter safety during decontamination?

In the past, firefighters often continued to work in their contaminated protective clothing for a long time after the operation to carry out the necessary follow-up work.

As a result, the damage caused by smoke gases and soot in the clothing is a health hazard and a high burden for the person.

The ability to change clothing at the scene of the incident greatly reduces the risk of damage to health from smoke gases.

No stationary decontamination stations need to be set up.

There will be more and more national and international regulations to protect emergency services from so-called “fire cancer”.

In order to fulfil these requirements, more and more tenders are being invited for hygiene vehicles for use.

An increased demand has already been recognised in Germany for several years.

These models feature advanced firefighting systems, including Ziegler’s Z-Control and Foam System 24.

Advanced technology for CGDIS operations

Each vehicle is outfitted with advanced firefighting technology aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

The HLF 20 models, built on a Mercedes-Benz Atego chassis, include a 2,000-litre water tank, a 200-litre foam tank, and the Ziegler FPN 10-3000-1H centrifugal fire pump.

Ziegler provides new foam firefighting vehicle to Krommenie fire department

Ziegler vehicle details and capabilities

As reported by Ziegler, the Krommenie fire department in the Dutch safety region Zaanstreek-Waterland received a new foam firefighting vehicle on July 29, 2024.

The vehicle, built by Ziegler Brandweertechniek B.V., is based on a 4-axle Mercedes-Benz Arocs 8×4/4 chassis and has an engine output of 460 kW (625 HP).

The Mercedes-Benz cab accommodates a crew of 1+1.

The vehicle’s ALPAS superstructure allows it to carry over 11,000 liters of extinguishing agent, providing robustness and durability in everyday operations.

It is equipped with a Ziegler FPN 10-8000-1H centrifugal fire pump, which handles high flow rates of extinguishing agent.

This, combined with the Ziegler ZPF foam proportioning system, ensures effective firefighting.

Advanced features for efficient firefighting

The new firefighting vehicle includes two remote-controlled turrets, located at the front and roof, which deliver extinguishing agents accurately and safely.

Additionally, the vehicle has a 250 kg powder extinguishing system for enhanced firefighting capabilities.

For flexible and rapid deployment, the vehicle features two 40-meter low-pressure hose reels, each with a delivery rate of 400 liters per minute.

The intuitive Z-Control operating system allows for simple and efficient control of all functions, even under stressful conditions.

Enhanced pumping capacity

The vehicle is designed to deliver around 8,000 liters per minute at an inlet pressure of 3.5 bar through its submersible pumps.

It includes two 3” connections for the connection, ensuring high performance during operations.
