Multitone Electronics is working with Ericsson and Telent to develop a communications solution for the UK’s transition away from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

The three companies will demonstrate their integrated system at the BAPCO Show 2025, taking place at the Coventry Building Society Arena on 5-6 March 2025.

According to Multitone, the solution ensures secure and high-availability IP-based communication, addressing challenges associated with previous 4G solutions.

Live demonstration to showcase integrated response system

At the exhibition, the three partners will present how their integrated system functions across their respective stands.

Humphreys explained: “At the exhibition, visitors can see how all personnel on all three company stands – Ericsson, Telent, and Multitone – use their respective technology to communicate with each other.

“Once one of the stands sends an alarm, all three stands will respond; Ericsson with flashing lights and sounds, Telent by generating sound, and Multitone with sound and alerters.”

The demonstration is designed to highlight how the solution enables connectivity between different communication nodes, stations, and end points.

Addressing the PSTN switch-off with digital solutions

The UK’s PSTN network is set to be decommissioned, necessitating the adoption of alternative communication infrastructure.

Multitone, Ericsson, and Telent’s solution provides a centrally managed second IP bearer between control sites and station-end equipment.

Multitone states that this configuration offers a reliable alternative to legacy systems, mitigating previous challenges experienced with some 4G solutions.

The network supports emergency services across the state.

The agreement with the Department of Justice and Community Safety extends MMR’s operation until 2035.

The network provides secure radio communications for Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Fire Rescue Victoria, Victoria State Emergency Service, and Life Saving Victoria.

Motorola Solutions to provide 24/7 support

Motorola Solutions will deliver 24/7 operational support through its Melbourne-based control centre and field engineering teams.

More than 32,000 radios used on the network will be maintained at the P25 radio standard.

Network expansion and new technologies

The agreement will see Marine, Search & Rescue added to the MMR network in 2025.

SmartConnect, a cloud-based service, will also be introduced to automatically switch between land mobile radio (LMR), broadband, Wi-Fi, and satellite networks when users travel beyond radio coverage areas.

Ambulance Victoria’s regional units will gain access to 1,600 new APX NEXT all-band smart radios, along with 750 APX series multi-band mobile radios installed in regional ambulances.

These enhancements aim to expand coverage and improve access to data applications.

MMR’s role in past emergency responses

The MMR network has been in place since 2005 and has supported Victoria’s public safety agencies during major crises, including the 2023 flood crisis and the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

The contract is also intended to offer a streamlined experience for control room operators, consolidating command functions into a single, unified system.

This approach, according to Watt, will “reinforce our commitment to providing a modern experience for our control room operators.”

NERIS, created in partnership with the American fire service, aims to enable more accurate, timely responses to community emergencies, while improving post-incident data access for local and national agencies.

NERIS Version 1 will support nearly 27,000 fire and EMS departments by capturing data that helps these agencies make informed decisions, adjust resource allocation, and respond effectively to evolving threats such as lithium-ion battery fires, wildland-urban interface fires, and extreme weather events.

New platform replaces NFIRS as primary reporting tool

NERIS is set to replace the legacy National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), which will be phased out by early 2026.

After completing beta testing with over 60 departments, NERIS will onboard an additional 105 departments by the end of 2024.

A full nationwide rollout will follow in January 2025, spanning 12 months to cover all fire and EMS departments.

The platform has been developed through a collaborative effort involving the Fire Safety Research Institute, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate.

According to Dr. Steve Kerber, Vice President and Executive Director of the Fire Safety Research Institute, NERIS will mark a significant shift in fire service data usage.

Dr. Kerber stated: “NERIS represents a new era for the fire service. It will put actionable data in the hands of our firefighters, giving them the tools to better protect their communities and use resources more effectively.”

US fire departments to transition from NFIRS to NERIS in 2025

In 2025, NERIS will be offered at no cost to fire and EMS departments across the U.S. as they transition from NFIRS.

This transition period will allow departments to continue using NFIRS while gradually integrating NERIS into their systems.

All departments are advised to maintain current reporting standards in NFIRS until they are fully transitioned to NERIS by early 2026, ensuring consistent data continuity throughout the changeover.
