Teledyne GMI expands Southeast support

Teledyne Gas Measurement Instruments (Teledyne GMI) has announced a partnership with Southern Cross, a Sparus company, to distribute its gas and leak detection portfolio to gas utility customers across the Southeast region of the United States.

The company said Southern Cross will also provide regional service support alongside the existing Teledyne GMI USA service centre in Cypress, Texas.

The agreement was announced from Renfrew, Scotland.

Teledyne GMI said the arrangement is intended to improve response times and technical support for customers using gas detection technologies in the region.

Teledyne GMI products and service scope

The portfolio covered by the distribution agreement includes the GS700, GS500, GT Series and PS200.

The company said the instruments are supported by its GDCloud platform, which provides centralised real-time access to field information.

It said the platform is used for fleet management, compliance reporting, preventive maintenance and operational decision-making.

Southern Cross role in US rollout

Teledyne GMI said the partnership with Southern Cross brings combined sector experience in the gas utility market and extends its service presence in the United States.

Heritage fire safety upgrades continue across priority sites in Japan

Fire safety programme continues at heritage sites

Japan is continuing fire protection upgrades at priority heritage sites after the 2019 blaze that destroyed major structures at Shuri Castle in Okinawa.

The South China Morning Post reported that work has not yet begun at around 30 per cent of the 107 cultural properties placed under a national programme launched in 2020 by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

So far, 64 designated sites have installed new fire protection measures.

A further seven locations are undergoing upgrades.

The programme was introduced after the October 2019 fire at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Naha, which burned for nearly 12 hours and destroyed six buildings covering about 4,200 square metres.

Investigators later found that the fire began at an electrical distribution board.

Authorities ruled out arson.

According to Hiroko Moriyama of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the programme adds measures beyond those required under Japan’s Fire Service Act.

World Heritage sites and national treasures are being equipped with flame detectors, specialised fire hydrants and upgraded alarm systems alongside conventional extinguishers.

Moriyama said: “This will help safeguard irreplaceable cultural assets that would otherwise be lost forever if they were damaged by fire.”

Funding, delays and the revised timetable

The South China Morning Post also reported that the Japanese government will cover up to 85 per cent of the cost of the new fire protection systems.

Nearly 13 billion yen, equivalent to around US$82.3 million, has already been allocated to support upgrades at temples, shrines, castles, palaces and historic residences.

Matsue Castle in Shimane Prefecture has installed new flame and smoke detectors as well as a replacement sprinkler system.

Zenkoji Temple in Nagano has introduced high-sensitivity smoke detectors and set up a dedicated 24-hour self-defence fire brigade for emergency response.

Officials said progress has slowed because some sites lost income during the Covid-19 pandemic, material costs rose and some stakeholders disagreed over how to install upgrades without affecting historic architecture.

Some projects have also been slowed by access issues at sites in mountainous areas.

Moriyama said: “We understand there are various individual circumstances that are the reason for the delays.”

Authorities have not identified the sites where work has yet to begin because they said publishing that information could create security risks.

With the original five-year programme nearing its end, the government has introduced a new four-year scheme that will continue support for sites still needing improved fire protection.

The revised scheme will also fund measures to improve resistance to earthquakes and flooding.

Under the updated timetable, the Agency for Cultural Affairs expects the remaining fire safety improvements at priority sites to be completed by 2035.

Work to rebuild Shuri Castle is nearing completion, with the structures around the hilltop courtyard expected to reopen to visitors in the autumn.

New Scotland wildfire strategy launched after record 2025 fire season

Scotland action plan sets out wildfire response changes

A new strategic action plan has been launched to strengthen wildfire prevention, preparedness and response across Scotland following the country’s most severe wildfire season in recent memory.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the plan is designed to improve coordination between agencies, expand operational capability and increase public awareness of wildfire risk.

Scotland’s high-risk wildfire period, traditionally between March and May, has expanded in recent years.

Firefighters spent more than 100 days responding to more than 230 wildfires during 2025.

The executive summary of the Wildfires: strategic action plan records 241 wildfires during the year, including the Carrbridge and Dava Moor fire which burned nearly 10,000 hectares and is described as the UK’s largest recorded wildfire.

The plan was developed in partnership with SFRS with input from His Majesty’s Fire Service Inspectorate alongside other stakeholders.

It sets out coordinated actions under three areas covering prevention, preparedness and response.

Measures include strengthening public awareness of wildfire risks, investing in wildfire vehicles and equipment and developing a multi-agency Concept of Operations ahead of the 2026 wildfire season.

Local and regional Incident Response Plans will also be enhanced to strengthen protection for responders, rural communities and Scotland’s natural environment during periods of heightened wildfire activity.

Additional actions include reviewing and expanding the Community Asset Register and examining a mountain rescue-style approach to trained wildfire volunteers with a potential trial in Cairngorms National Park.

Scotland equipment investment and operational preparation

SFRS said it reviewed the 2025 wildfire season and has invested in equipment, training and specialist capability.

Four new wildfire support units with enhanced equipment have been placed in Alford, Oban, Galashiels and Dornoch.

Two interim wildfire units have also been introduced in Lockerbie and Thurso.

Controlled burn training is being delivered to support operational readiness.

The service worked with partners to review wildfire incidents from 2025 through the Scottish Multi-Agency Resilience Training and Exercising Unit (SMARTEU).

Recommendations from the SMARTEU debrief will be progressed through the Scottish Wildfire Forum.

More than 30 fire stations across Scotland are already equipped with dedicated wildfire resources.

Wildfire tactical advisers are also available to provide strategic support during incidents.

To inform the public, SFRS issues Wildfire Danger Assessments through its website and social media channels when weather conditions increase wildfire risk.

SFRS Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour said: “Wildfires continue to pose an increasing threat to Scotland’s rural communities and natural environment.

“We welcome the strategic action plan, which is an essential step in ensuring our firefighters, land managers, public bodies and partners can enhance their collective response to wildfires.

“It is vital for everyone to play their part in protecting Scotland’s natural environment with responsible outdoor behaviour.

“Never assume a small fire, like a campfire or portable BBQ, is safe and harmless.

“The smallest spark or ember in dry conditions can quickly lead to wildfire destroying large parts of the countryside.”

Scotland ministers link plan to future wildfire preparedness

SFRS said Minister for Community Safety Siobhian Brown and Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie joined the service at Pitlochry fire station to present wildfire appliances and equipment as the annual wildfire awareness campaign launched alongside the action plan.

Brown said: “Last year’s wildfires were a warning that we must be prepared for this to be a more regular occurrence as a result of climate change.

“The strategic action plan will improve coordination between the SFRS and other responders during wildfires and includes the development of Incident Response Plans to strengthen the protection of responders, rural communities, and the natural environment during periods of heightened wildfire activity.

“It will also see the Community Asset Register – a list of volunteers and equipment to help with wildfire response – reviewed and expanded.”

Fairlie said: “All of us who saw the devastation caused by last year’s fires know that it took an incredible effort to get them under control and I would like to repeat our thanks to all the SFRS staff, landowners, managers, keepers and workers who stepped in.

“So many communities stepped up to save their local landscape and the species that live there and this plan is intended to help us better prepare for the future.

“Each of us has a part to play in preventing wildfires and must be mindful of their behaviour when enjoying our wonderful countryside during the dry months to ensure we do not do anything or leave behind litter that could ignite a fire.”

The strategic action plan sets out a coordinated approach intended to strengthen Scotland’s wildfire resilience ahead of the 2026 wildfire season and in future years.

Angus Fire permit draft explains proposed PFAS treatment measures

Angus Fire permit moves to draft decision stage

The Environment Agency has opened a consultation on its minded-to decision to grant a permit variation for Angus Fire’s site in High Bentham, North Yorkshire.

The Environment Agency said the application is for an effluent treatment plant to reduce PFAS contamination in collected rainwater and future rainwater falling onto key areas of the site.

The consultation runs from Thursday 5 March until the end of Wednesday 1 April 2026.

The agency said it had reviewed comments and evidence from the original consultation last summer and could not find a reason to refuse the application at this stage.

It said the draft decision document explains how comments from the earlier consultation were considered and sets out the decision-making behind the draft outcome.

The draft permit document sets out the conditions the operator would need to meet if the permit variation is granted.

The Environment Agency said people can respond through its Citizen Space consultation website or by email.

Angus Fire site plans and PFAS treatment

Previously, Angus Fire manufactured and tested firefighting foam at the site, and the foam is known to have contained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The Environment Agency said those PFAS chemicals contaminate rainwater when it falls onto key areas of the site.

That rainwater has been collected so it can be treated to reduce PFAS substances.

The application covers an effluent treatment plant intended to reduce PFAS in stored rainwater and in future rainwater from the site.

Once treated at the plant, the rainwater would be discharged to the River Wenning.

The proposed PFAS level remaining in the treated rainwater discharged into the river would be in line with levels currently accepted as best practice for PFAS treatment processes.

The operator no longer manufactures firefighting foam at its High Bentham site.

The application relates to treating rainwater affected by the site’s previous manufacturing processes.

Angus Fire consultation invites public responses

John Neville, Area Environment Manager for the Environment Agency, said: “We have carefully considered all of the documents, as well as the consultation comments, and currently can’t find any reason to refuse the variation application.

“Our regulatory controls are in place to protect people and the environment and we are carrying out a detailed and robust assessment.

“I’d encourage interested parties to view the decision document and send us their comments. We’ll then make our final decision once we’ve reviewed those responses.”

The Environment Agency said it may only refuse a permit application if it does not meet one or more legal requirements under environmental legislation.

It said that where an application shows a site can operate in line with current environmental regulations and provide a high level of protection for the environment and human health, it is legally required to issue a permit.

The consultation documents explain what the agency can take into account when deciding the application, and people who cannot respond online or by email can contact the Environment Agency by phone.

Rosenbauer to supply 26 Dutch airport fire vehicles

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract for 26 Rosenbauer PANTHER 6×6 vehicles to renew the airport firefighting vehicle fleet in the Netherlands.

Rosenbauer announced that the order will be handled by Kenbri Fire Fighting, its exclusive partner in the Netherlands, and the vehicles will replace the crash tenders currently in use at airports.

Andreas Zeller, Chief Sales Officer at Rosenbauer International AG, said: “This order once again highlights the strong international position of the Rosenbauer PANTHER as a leading aircraft rescue firefighting vehicle.

Rosenbauer vehicles include HRET and roof turret configurations

Rosenbauer said seven vehicles will be delivered with high reach extendable turrets (HRET) and 19 vehicles will be equipped with roof turrets.

The HRET units include an extendable telescopic arm that reaches around 16 metres and allows firefighting from a distance.

Water, foam or extinguishing powder can be dispensed with precision through the extinguishing arm.

The roof turret vehicles use electrically remote controlled turrets with flow rates of up to 9,000 litres per minute and throw ranges exceeding 90 metres.

The vehicles accelerate from 0 to 80 km/h in less than 33 seconds to support rapid response to major fires.

PANTHER 6×6 designed for airport firefighting operations

Rosenbauer said the PANTHER 6×6 is designed for airport use and includes high engine performance and off road capability.

The vehicles also include high extinguishing agent capacity with pumping and monitoring systems designed for rapid firefighting operations.

The crash tested cabin is ergonomically designed with all round visibility and assistance systems intended to support crew safety and comfort.

The vehicles comply with international International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and are tailored to the operational requirements of Dutch airport fire services.

Meiko expands Interschutz showcase with workshop and mobile cleaning units

Meiko to show SCBA and PPE systems

Meiko will present new cleaning and disinfection systems for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other personal protective equipment at Interschutz from 1 to 6 June 2026.

The company’s presence will span three exhibition areas, including stand L21 in hall 14, the open-air area between halls 11 and 12 and the outdoor venue for the FireFit European Championships between halls 7 and 9.

Stand L21 in hall 14 will include a new prototype machine for cleaning respiratory protective equipment in a footprint of less than one square metre.

The machine is intended for smaller fire services with lower throughput.

Meiko will also present new features for its TopClean range.

Its TopClean D PPE decontamination machine uses a reversing wash system to remove combustion residue from SCBA sets, and an optional brush has been added for a more thorough clean.

A prototype wastewater filter system will also be shown, designed to capture contaminants before they reach the sewerage network.

The company’s display will also show the workflow from the dirty side to the clean side of an SCBA workshop through planning examples for fire service and industrial settings.

Meiko to demonstrate mobile workshop

Meiko stated that its open-air display between halls 11 and 12 will feature a mobile SCBA workshop developed with vehicle manufacturer Mosolf.

The trailer is designed for extended incidents such as wildfires.

It is divided into a dirty side and a clean side to reduce cross-contamination.

The unit includes facilities for cleaning, disinfection, drying and testing of respiratory protective equipment.

Live demonstrations will allow visitors to watch the process and take part in individual stages.

Meiko equipment to support FireFit operations

Meiko said a transport vehicle fitted with its equipment will be used to service SCBA sets supplied to competitors at the FireFit European Championships during the fair.

The championships will take place at Interschutz, with firefighters from around the world competing in individual and team events across the event.

FireFit Europe uses the vehicle as a plug-and-play mobile SCBA workshop for around ten events each year in several countries.

The unit is designed for rapid deployment and allows equipment to be cleaned in a sheltered environment in different weather conditions.

A screen near the competition area will show real-time footage of PPE being cleaned and prepared inside the vehicle.

Visitors will also be able to enter the vehicle in small groups during breaks between events and inspect the equipment.

Madrid-based Agustin Polo joins Hyfire in global product marketing post

Hyfire appoints new global product marketing lead

Hyfire has appointed Agustin Polo as Global Product Marketing Manager, based in Madrid, to support the international promotion of its wireless fire safety systems and contribute to its global product marketing strategy.

Hyfire said Polo will work with teams across the company and its parent organisation, Orama, on product launches, digital initiatives and wider transformation programmes.

Polo was born in Argentina and raised in Italy.

He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Milan before studying for a Master’s degree in Vienna, Austria.

He holds dual citizenship and is fluent in Italian, Spanish and German.

Following his studies, he worked with organisations in Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States, gaining experience across several international markets.

Polo said: “What really drew me to Hyfire was their technological innovation.

“Especially the idea of using wireless systems as a launch pad toward digital transformation in fire safety.

“It is something that, in my opinion, this sector really needs right now to gain that digital momentum.”

Polo sets out wireless growth focus

Hyfire said Agustin Polo, Global Product Marketing Manager, will coordinate with teams across the organisation to support the marketing of the company’s wireless fire safety technologies as it seeks to strengthen its position in wireless fire detection systems and expand internationally.

CONAF study details wildfire prevention gains during Chile fire season

Wildfire prevention findings from Chile

New analysis published in January 2026 found that wildfire prevention and response measures in Chile avoided substantial damage during the severe 2023 fire season.

The study by Jorge Saavedra, Daniela Alegría, Gonzalo Tapia, Ana Prados and Mackenzie Allen used modelling and post-fire assessments conducted by the National Forestry Agency (CONAF) to examine wildfire impacts and avoided losses.

During the Santa Ana fire in the Biobío region in February 2023, about 108,944 hectares burned.

Modelling suggested the fire could have affected about 242,093 hectares.

That left an estimated 133,149 hectares spared.

The analysis also found that 17,321 homes were identified as potentially at risk.

Around 15,171 of those homes were ultimately spared from fire damage.

Across January and February 2023, CONAF estimated that prevention and response efforts helped prevent about USD 2 billion in economic losses.

That figure was about 20.8 times greater than the country’s USD 101 million budget for fire control and prevention activities.

The same analysis indicated that about 64,477 people and 46,634 structures avoided wildfire impacts during that period.

How the analysis measured avoided losses

CONAF stated that it has been analysing avoided wildfire losses since 2014 – 2015 to support wildfire risk management policy and assess prevention strategies.

One method uses fire behaviour simulation to estimate potential spread under given conditions.

Another method uses fire potential polygons to model areas that could have burned if suppression and mitigation efforts had not taken place.

These models are then compared with the actual burned area after a fire.

The difference between the modelled and observed burn area is used to estimate the land, property and communities protected by prevention and response actions.

That avoided burned area can also be combined with population data, property values and vegetation assessments to estimate economic impacts and the number of people and structures protected from damage.

Community measures and vegetation protection

The analysis also examined avoided losses linked to vegetation damage and community-level wildfire prevention work.

According to the figures presented, avoided vegetation-related economic losses in the affected regions during the 2023 fire season reached about USD 786 million.

The study said these figures reflect the value of forests, agricultural land and natural vegetation protected through prevention and response measures.

Chile has also expanded community-based wildfire prevention through CONAF’s Community Preparedness Program.

The programme works with residents in high-risk rural areas and wildland-urban interface zones to develop participatory wildfire prevention plans.

Activities include training workshops on household protection measures and the development of local emergency response procedures.

Vegetation management measures are also used in interface zones, with pruning and thinning used alongside fuel breaks to reduce fuel continuity and slow fire spread.

The authors said the Chilean case study shows how fire modelling, earth observation data and post-fire analysis can support wildfire mitigation and policy development.

Extreme fire weather risk projected to rise across Australia

Fire weather projections across Australia

Extreme fire weather events are projected to become more frequent and more intense across Australia as global temperatures rise, with some of the sharpest changes expected in fire-prone forest ecosystems in the southeast.

A study published in npj Natural Hazards examined changes in fire weather using the McArthur Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI) together with dynamically downscaled CMIP6 climate model projections.

The research was carried out by researchers from the Queensland Future Climate Science Program, the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne.

It found that under 3°C of global warming, weekly extreme fire weather events that historically occurred once every 20 or 50 years are projected to become much more common across Australia.

Across southeast Australia’s eucalypt forests, the study estimates that these events could become about 2.1 times and 2.5 times more likely under 3°C of warming.

In Tasmania, comparable events may become about 3.2 times and 4.1 times more likely.

Fire weather refers to atmospheric conditions that affect the ignition and spread of wildfires, including temperature, humidity, wind speed and rainfall patterns.

The FFDI combines these factors to estimate potential fire behaviour.

The analysis also found that severe fire weather days, defined by an FFDI of 50 or higher, are projected to increase across much of Australia.

The largest increases in severe fire weather days are projected in northwestern and central regions.

Days classified as “Very High” fire weather are also expected to increase in northern and southern parts of the country.

Fire weather in forest regions and future planning

The study states that southeast Australia’s forest ecosystems remain a key area of concern because these regions have historically experienced destructive bushfires.

For eucalypt forests across southeast Australia, the magnitude of rare fire weather events could increase by about 10% under 3°C of warming.

Tasmania is projected to see stronger changes in both the intensity and likelihood of extreme events than other regions covered in the study.

The findings suggest rising maximum temperatures will be a main driver of higher fire weather risk.

In southern forest regions, falling humidity and higher drought conditions are also projected to increase the potential for intense fires.

The study also states that changes in large-scale climate patterns, including the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Southern Annular Mode, may affect future fire weather through changes in wind patterns, rainfall and humidity.

The researchers found that fire weather seasons may lengthen in several regions, with more dangerous conditions projected during spring, autumn and winter.

The study states that understanding these changes is important for future resilience planning, including wildfire preparedness, land management and building standards in bushfire-prone areas.
