The planned withdrawal of BS 476 classifications from Approved Document B in September 2029 and adoption of EN-based classification is prompting manufacturers to review how fire and smoke performance is evidenced and classified.

For many manufacturers, that means taking a more joined-up approach to testing, combining fire resistance and smoke leakage programmes to build a clearer picture of overall doorset performance.

Why fire doorset testing is changing

Smoke leakage testing has traditionally focused on sealing systems fitted to the head and jambs of a doorset.

While that approach remains aligned with the current regulatory guidance for smoke control doors, there is now greater attention on understanding the performance of the complete assembly, including how smoke may pass through gaps at the threshold.

More recent guidance, such as BS 8214:2026 has encouraged wider consideration of threshold sealing and the contribution that the bottom gap can make to smoke leakage.

This reflects a broader move towards assessing the complete doorset rather than individual components and ensuring performance clearly links to realworld applications.

Smoke leakage testing and complete doorset performance

Many organisations still approach smoke leakage testing and fire resistance testing through separate programmes. There can be good reasons for working in this way. Product development rarely follows a straight line and designs can evolve.

However, the risk of working in this way is that important design details may be missed that need to be evaluated for both fire and smoke performance characteristics.

The result is that when smoke leakage testing has been carried out on one design and fire resistance testing on another, additional work may be required to establish how those results apply to the final doorset being offered to the market.

The process can become even more complicated when multiple product variations, sizes or hardware options are involved. Manufacturers may find themselves managing several test reports, assessments and supporting documents to demonstrate that a doorset can deliver both fire resistance and smoke control performance.

Benefits of integrated fire doorset testing

Planning smoke leakage and fire resistance testing together in a coordinated programme reduces duplication, testing schedules and project management activities. It can also help manufacturers build a more coherent technical package while reducing the risk of gaps emerging later in the process.

Heritage fire safety upgrades continue across priority sites in Japan

Fire safety programme continues at heritage sites

Japan is continuing fire protection upgrades at priority heritage sites after the 2019 blaze that destroyed major structures at Shuri Castle in Okinawa.

The South China Morning Post reported that work has not yet begun at around 30 per cent of the 107 cultural properties placed under a national programme launched in 2020 by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

So far, 64 designated sites have installed new fire protection measures.

A further seven locations are undergoing upgrades.

The programme was introduced after the October 2019 fire at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Naha, which burned for nearly 12 hours and destroyed six buildings covering about 4,200 square metres.

Investigators later found that the fire began at an electrical distribution board.

Authorities ruled out arson.

According to Hiroko Moriyama of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the programme adds measures beyond those required under Japan’s Fire Service Act.

World Heritage sites and national treasures are being equipped with flame detectors, specialised fire hydrants and upgraded alarm systems alongside conventional extinguishers.

Moriyama said: “This will help safeguard irreplaceable cultural assets that would otherwise be lost forever if they were damaged by fire.”

Funding, delays and the revised timetable

The South China Morning Post also reported that the Japanese government will cover up to 85 per cent of the cost of the new fire protection systems.

Nearly 13 billion yen, equivalent to around US$82.3 million, has already been allocated to support upgrades at temples, shrines, castles, palaces and historic residences.

Matsue Castle in Shimane Prefecture has installed new flame and smoke detectors as well as a replacement sprinkler system.

Zenkoji Temple in Nagano has introduced high-sensitivity smoke detectors and set up a dedicated 24-hour self-defence fire brigade for emergency response.

Officials said progress has slowed because some sites lost income during the Covid-19 pandemic, material costs rose and some stakeholders disagreed over how to install upgrades without affecting historic architecture.

Some projects have also been slowed by access issues at sites in mountainous areas.

Moriyama said: “We understand there are various individual circumstances that are the reason for the delays.”

Authorities have not identified the sites where work has yet to begin because they said publishing that information could create security risks.

With the original five-year programme nearing its end, the government has introduced a new four-year scheme that will continue support for sites still needing improved fire protection.

The revised scheme will also fund measures to improve resistance to earthquakes and flooding.

Under the updated timetable, the Agency for Cultural Affairs expects the remaining fire safety improvements at priority sites to be completed by 2035.

Work to rebuild Shuri Castle is nearing completion, with the structures around the hilltop courtyard expected to reopen to visitors in the autumn.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire West and Chester Council have won Gold in the Innovation in Public Sector Award at the IESE Public Sector Transformation Awards in Westminster for a fire protection system installed on Chester’s historic Rows.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that the project installed an aspirating smoke detection system across the outdoor heritage site, marking the first use of this type of early warning technology at an outdoor historic site in the UK.

The work involved collaboration between the council, heritage specialists and the Protection Department at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

In January, the system detected smoke from a fire at a commercial premises on Music Hall Passage more than 100 metres away.

The blaze had also been reported through a 999 call.

The early alert demonstrated how the system could provide warning if a fire occurred at night, when the Rows are more exposed.

Project partners and national recognition

The installation was carried out with Charles Thomas Heritage Fire Protection Specialists, Donald Insall Associates, Recclesia and specialist consultants, with part funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “I’m delighted that the introduction of our Aspirating Smoke Detection system is not only helping to protect the Chester Rows, but the technology and innovation could play a part in protecting many more heritage sites across the country.

“The new system plays a vital role in our fire protection action plan.

“Winning this gold award will help to showcase the system to far more sites. Congratulations to the many people involved in developing, installing and running the new system.”

The system is now being considered by councils and conservation bodies as a possible approach for heritage fire protection at other sites.

Firefighters respond to Union Street blaze in Glasgow

A major fire near Glasgow Central Station forced the closure of the station and the suspension of rail services after a blaze broke out in a commercial building on Union Street in Glasgow city centre on Sunday 8 March.

Media reporting and statements from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service indicate the alarm was raised at about 15:45 after a fire was reported in a shop within the building, which forms part of a block of multi-storey Victorian commercial properties close to the entrance of the station.

Firefighters attended the incident with 15 appliances, including three high-reach vehicles, while crews pumped water from the River Clyde as the fire developed during the afternoon and evening.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said there had been no reported casualties as of 20:30 on Sunday evening.

Reports indicated the fire was first reported in a vape shop on Union Street near Glasgow Central Station after emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 15:45.

Images and aerial footage from the area showed flames spreading through the structure as fire spread across the building during the incident.

Fire damage was visible across several floors of the property as firefighters continued working to control the blaze.

Large-scale fire service response mounted

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said 15 appliances were deployed to tackle the fire, including three high-reach vehicles used by firefighters operating above street level.

Firefighters used aerial platforms to direct water onto the upper sections of the building while crews at street level worked to contain the flames.

Water supply operations included pumping water from the River Clyde as crews continued the firefighting operation.

Fire spread through historic city centre buildings

The fire affected a row of Victorian buildings around Union Street and Renfield Street in Glasgow city centre.

Drone images from the scene showed the building’s roof had collapsed and that the fire had spread through the structure.

Several sections of the building appeared to be heavily damaged as the incident continued.

A structural collapse was reported during the firefighting operation as the fire progressed through the building.

BBC Scotland journalist Paul Ward reported from the scene: “I’ve just watched the dome on the building next to Central Station fall in the fire.

“Four floors of the building are still standing from what I can see on Renfield Street.

“Two firefighters on height appliances are dampening down flames.

“Embers can still be seen burning in the lower levels of the building.”

Impact on transport and city infrastructure

The incident resulted in the closure of Glasgow Central Station and the suspension of rail services through the station.

ScotRail said the closure would continue into Monday morning while passengers were advised to check travel updates with their operators.

Network Rail said: “Glasgow Central Station has been closed until further notice, and will not reopen on Monday morning, following a fire at a vape shop on Union Street this afternoon.

“Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, are on site and managing the incident. As a precaution, all services through Glasgow Central have been suspended and passengers are advised to seek alternative travel arrangements.

“We will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available.”

Bus operators said some services would accept train tickets for affected passengers as disruption continued in the city centre.

Sexy Coffee said it was “devastated” that its Union Street branch had been destroyed, describing the situation as “heartbreaking” and adding that it would “rebuild, revamp the shop and reopen”.

Lucky in Love tattooing said it was “devastated”, adding that the business was in “complete shock”.

Nail salon Amore said it was “absolutely heartbroken”, describing the situation as “horrendous”.

The owner of Willow hair salon said her business had been “burned to the ground”.

Firefighters remained at the scene as crews continued working to extinguish the fire and secure the building.

Why two British fire stations were denied heritage status despite expert backing

Fire stations in Bath and Shoreditch denied historic listing

Architects Journal has reported that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has refused to list Bath Fire Station and Shoreditch Fire Station despite recommendations from Historic England.

The publication said Bath Fire Station, completed in 1937 to a design by architect Molly Gerrard, is one of the few known fire stations designed by a woman.

It added that Shoreditch Fire Station, built in 1965, was designed in the Brutalist style by London County Council.

In its rejection, DCMS said Bath Fire Station is not considered innovative and that its features are typical of fire stations built in the interwar period.

Historic England advised that Shoreditch Fire Station was a creative and expressive example of Brutalist architecture.

It said the concrete frame and brick facing were used to create elevations animated by strong structural forms.

According to Architects Journal, heritage minister Fiona Twycross recused herself from the decision due to previous roles with London Fire Brigade and related organisations.

“Both have a strong claim to architectural and historic interest and would now be Grade II-listed, yet instead they face the maddening prospect of demolition due to a ministerial intervention.

“One has to ask why DCMS is ignoring the recommendations of their appointed experts, Historic England, and Twentieth Century Society, the relevant national amenity society?”

Marshall added: “There are several examples of nationally listed historic fire stations that continue to be operational, with sensitive adaption and modernisation to suit the evolving needs of the fire brigade.

“Euston Fire Station in London is perhaps the best known.

“Opened in 1902 and Grade II*-listed in 1974, it has been in continuous use for 123 years.

“Why couldn’t the same enlightened approach be taken in the cases of Shoreditch and Bath?”

DCMS response to heritage concerns

A DCMS spokesperson commented on the decision.

They said: “There are over 370,000 listed buildings in England, designated on the grounds of special architectural or historic interest.

“The criteria for listing are set out in the secretary of state’s principles of selection for listed buildings.”

Agreement to improve forest fire response in Machu Picchu

The government of Peru is expanding disaster response and prevention measures for the country’s most emblematic protected natural areas.

According to the Ministry of the Environment’s agency Sernanp, the move follows an inter-institutional agreement with the District Municipality of San Jerónimo in the Cusco region.

The government said the agreement aims to protect the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and improve local capacity to respond to environmental emergencies.

Sernanp executive president José Carlos Nieto Navarrete said: “Sernanp has become the country’s best-prepared first-response force to combat forest fires.

“But we must also focus on prevention. Today, we are joining forces with the local government to protect lives, forests, and Peru’s natural heritage.”

The plan includes training community brigades, providing specialised equipment, and offering technical courses to improve readiness in an area identified as highly vulnerable due to biodiversity and terrain.

The Peruvian government stated that one of the first measures will be a basic forestry backpack course.

The government of Peru has announced a plan to strengthen disaster response in protected natural areas.

The Ministry of the Environment’s agency Sernanp signed an agreement with the District Municipality of San Jerónimo in Cusco.

The agreement focuses on protecting the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and improving emergency response.

Sernanp executive president José Carlos Nieto Navarrete said the plan combines prevention with rapid response measures.

Initial actions include a basic forestry backpack course and a forest firefighter training programme.

The training will start on 8 August with 30 participants selected by the municipality.

Participants will receive personal protective equipment and instruction from Sernanp trainers.

Sernanp personnel recently trained in Brazil in new firefighting technologies, including the use of blowers.

The government said the new technology will be used in San Jerónimo.

Officials from national parks, local government, and emergency services attended the signing ceremony.

Sernanp said the project is part of a wider prevention network to protect human life and natural heritage.

The Ministry of the Environment stated that the prevention network supports climate change mitigation.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has called for an investigation into the National Park Service’s handling of the Dragon Bravo Fire.

In a statement on X, Governor Hobbs said: “They must first take aggressive action to end the wildfire and prevent further damage.

“Arizonans deserve answers for how this fire was allowed to decimate the Grand Canyon National Park.”

The fire had initially been managed using a “confine and contain” strategy, but suppression tactics were escalated when the fire grew to over 7.8 square miles due to wind, heat and low humidity.
