Sertus analysis highlights trends in fire safety inspections and compliance

Inspections data shows rising unsatisfactory fire safety audit outcomes

Nearly half of all fire safety inspections in the UK were assessed as unsatisfactory in 2024/25, according to government statistics analysed by Sertus.

Figures published on GOV.UK and examined by Sertus show that 42% of the 51,026 fire safety audits conducted during the year were found to be unsatisfactory, with 21,312 audits identifying fire safety concerns.

Formal notices issued to premises owners also increased, reaching 2,990 in 2024/25 compared with 2,044 in 2016/17.

Unsatisfactory audit findings have risen steadily over eight years, increasing from 17,320 in 2016/17 to 21,312 in 2024/25, representing a 23% rise.

The number of formal enforcement notices issued during the same period increased by 46%.

The dataset also shows that only around 2% of the more than 2.5 million premises requiring regular audits receive inspections each year.

Premises requiring audits are expected to be assessed by a competent person approximately every three years.

Sertus links inspection trends to regulatory changes and scrutiny

Sertus attributed the increase in unsatisfactory inspections to regulatory reforms introduced following the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Richard White, Commercial Director at Sertus, said: “While the statistics may be alarming on the face of it, I’d argue that the increase is likely happening because of the implementation of the Building Safety Regulator and new legislation.

“There is a proper process in place now, and there wasn’t before.

“More people are beginning to understand what good looks like when it comes to fire safety and are picking up the pieces from sloppy auditing in the past.”

White added: “The spotlight has been firmly placed on high-risk buildings due to the failings that led to the Grenfell tragedy.

“The failings stem from a de-regulated building culture that stems back many years, meaning that we have been through decades of design and build which has largely happened without 3rd party inspection.

“There’s been a change in recent years to more rigorous focus on the design stage, before building commences, so we’d expect future projects to adhere to fire safety standards far better than those constructed in years gone by.”

The Building Safety Act 2022 introduced stricter regulatory requirements for higher risk buildings, while the Fire Safety Act 2021 clarified that responsible persons must manage and reduce fire risks relating to building structures, external walls and common areas.

These legislative changes expanded audit scope, strengthened enforcement powers and increased documentation and information sharing requirements, contributing to broader inspection coverage and enforcement activity.

Unmanned firefighting robots deployed to rescue units across South Korea

Firefighting robots donated to Korea National Fire Agency

Hyundai Motor Group has donated four unmanned firefighting robots to South Korea’s Korea National Fire Agency (KNFA) to support fire suppression in high-risk environments.

The Group confirmed that a donation ceremony took place on 24 February at the National 119 Rescue Headquarters in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province.

Two firefighting robots have already been deployed to 119 Special Rescue Units in the Capital and Yeongnam regions and are in use during live fire operations.

Two additional units will be delivered to the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire Headquarters in Hwaseong and the Chungnam Provincial Fire Headquarters.

Robot design and operational capabilities

Hyundai Motor Group developed the unmanned firefighting robot in collaboration with the KNFA based on Hyundai Rotem’s electrified multi-purpose unmanned vehicle, the HR-Sherpa.

The robot is equipped with a front-mounted water cannon capable of delivering both direct and spray-type water streams to address different fire conditions.

A self-spraying cooling system creates a protective water curtain around the vehicle, enabling it to maintain an internal temperature of 50 to 60°C when exposed to external temperatures reaching 800°C.

An infrared camera supports object detection through smoke and flames and helps identify fire origins and individuals requiring rescue.

Operators receive real-time video via a wireless connection, enabling remote control of driving and firefighting functions.

The vehicle uses high-temperature-resistant tyres and a six-wheel independent drive in-wheel motor system to support mobility across debris and uneven terrain.

Preventr fire protection group secures £10m expansion funding

Preventr has secured a £10m funding facility from Growth Lending to support expansion and acquisitions, including the purchase of Passive Fire Safety Solutions Limited (PFSS).

Preventr confirmed that an initial £6.2m has been provided to fund the PFSS acquisition and support its growth plans.

The wider facility provides additional capacity to pursue further acquisitions and invest in operational capacity, workforce and technology across the UK.

The PFSS acquisition expands installation and compliance capabilities and complements existing fire door manufacturing operations.

This positions the business to deliver full passive fire protection services nationwide across regulated environments including social housing, NHS facilities, commercial real estate, airports and residential portfolios.

Preventr employs 75 people nationwide and operates as a London-based national fire protection specialist and a portfolio company of Tandy Ventures.

Preventr outlines strategy supported by funding and acquisition

Preventr stated that the funding supports its buy-and-build strategy and internal transformation initiatives, including the roll-out of AI-powered technology to analyse building safety data and prioritise fire safety actions.

This technology is intended to help engineers manage compliance workloads more efficiently and improve building safety data analysis.

C-TEC has appointed a dedicated audio design and installation expert to its sales and support team to assist customers with audio system enquiries.

The company announced that Tremayne Crossley has joined to support hearing loop, infrared and thru-counter hearing assistance solutions, along with voice alarm installation enquiries.

Crossley brings experience gained over many years working at C-TEC’s sister company SigNET AC, where he continues to hold an active role.

His appointment is intended to help ensure that audio projects achieve audibility, intelligibility and reliability across supported systems.

Support for hearing assistance and lockdown-related audio systems

Ricky Thomas has been appointed head of commercial, where he will lead internal sales and estimating teams across the UK, bringing more than 20 years’ experience in commercial operations, estimating and delivery.

Anthony Kennedy has joined as specification manager, moving from architectural ironmongery company Franchi and previously Allgood.

This role represents the company’s first dedicated position focused on engagement with architects and the design community.

Founded in 2010, the manufacturer has grown from 12 employees to more than 240 staff.

The company reported a 14% increase in annual revenue in the last financial year and has invested in brand development and operational growth.

JELD-WEN confirms certified timber sourcing across UK manufacturing sites

JELD-WEN has confirmed that all timber used in its UK manufacturing operations is sourced from certified responsible suppliers, covering its facilities in Sheffield and Penrith.

According to the doorset manufacturer, both sites use timber from forests certified under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

This applies to all wood used in its UK production processes.

The approach is intended to support protection of forests, ecosystems and natural resources, alongside safeguarding the rights of local communities connected to timber supply chains.

Traceability systems and wider sustainability targets

JELD-WEN has also introduced a specialist software system to provide full traceability of timber and support compliance with the European Deforestation Regulation.

This system is designed to track timber throughout manufacturing processes and demonstrate sourcing compliance.

Responsible timber sourcing forms part of the organisation’s wider environmental, social and governance commitments.

These commitments include reducing carbon emissions and working towards zero waste to landfill by 2050.

Cradle to Cradle Certification has also been achieved for core UK-manufactured products, supporting circular economy objectives.

OroraTech supports new wildfire control centres in Patagonia region

OroraTech satellite services launched in Rio Negro

Satellite-powered wildfire detection and monitoring services have launched across Argentina’s Rio Negro province, with coverage stated as 20 million hectares in the Patagonia region.

OroraTech announced the deployment alongside GPTech and the Rio Negro provincial government.

The partnership includes two newly constructed wildfire control centres in Bariloche and El Bolsón, built and operated by GPTech.

OroraTech’s Wildfire Solution is set out as the digital core of the centres, providing thermal intelligence and near real time alerts for decision-makers, local firefighters – brigadistas – and emergency planners.

Control centres combine satellite data with ground inputs

The control centres are intended to coordinate response and prevention efforts by combining OroraTech’s proprietary satellite data with ground-based inputs, drone footage and communications infrastructure powered by Starlink.

Public consultation launched on fire safety standards in construction

Draft fire safety guidance for construction sites has been released for public consultation, with responses due by Wednesday 18 March.

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) said the consultation is intended for manufacturers, suppliers and system specifiers, and may also support installers and construction site managers responsible for fire safety.

A Special Interest Group meeting will take place on Monday 16 March to gather feedback and help develop the FIA’s position.

Comments must be submitted by close of business on Wednesday 11 March, after which registered contributors will receive draft copies, a comments template sheet and meeting distribution details.

What the fire safety guidance covers

The draft code of practice sets out guidance for managing fire safety on construction sites, including projects lasting more than 30 working days with over 20 workers on site at any one time or exceeding 500 person-working days.

Recommendations include the development of fire safety management systems designed to address both organisational and site-specific risks during construction works.

A separate draft specification defines requirements and performance criteria for fire detection and fire alarm systems intended for temporary use during construction.

The specification is primarily intended for manufacturers, suppliers and system specifiers, and is also relevant to installers and site managers with fire safety responsibilities.

Temporary installations fall within its scope, with permanent systems and project-specific suitability remaining outside its remit.

The document also references fire safety responsibilities set out in the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.

Bisson adds new dust filter to support air sampling detection performance

Bisson has launched a new Dust Filter designed to safeguard air sampling detection (ASD) systems operating in dusty conditions.

The company said the Dust Filter is intended to act as a protective barrier by removing contaminants before they can enter the air sampling unit or clog first-stage filters.

Air sampling detection – also known as aspirating smoke detection – is described as delivering early warnings of fire by continuously sampling air throughout a structure, with the capability to detect fire before visible smoke or flames appear.

Product design and intended performance claims

Steve Davis, General Manager of Bisson, said: “From industrial facilities to manufacturing plants, dust and particulates can quickly accumulate, reducing the sensitivity of aspirating smoke detection systems.

“With our new purpose-built ASD Dust Filter, systems operating in harsh environments can continue to deliver consistent, accurate and efficient fire detection”.

Bisson said the Dust Filter is designed to reduce maintenance requirements and extend the lifespan of the detector’s primary filter, with the aim of lowering long-term operating costs.

The company said the Dust Filter has been engineered to withstand exposure to chemicals and fuels, and to be tear-resistant.

Davis added: “Aspirating smoke detection systems are the best safety solution for high-risk and hazardous settings, thanks to their exceptional sensitivity and ability to provide the earliest possible warning.

“However, these systems are only as effective as their network of air-sampling pipework.

“Our pipes and fittings are purpose-built to perform in the harsh conditions these systems operate in and we are confident our new Dust Filter will be a key product in our range”.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service signs £11 million technology partnership with Telent

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS) has agreed a five-year, £11 million partnership with Telent to support the next phase of its digital transformation programme.

The partnership will cover technology supporting operational response and emergency communications, alongside IT services including critical networks, line of business applications and user devices.

Under the agreement, Telent will act as principal partner as ESFRS moves from a co-located data centre to a cloud-first environment within Microsoft Azure and application vendor provided cloud services.

Kev Pilkington, Head of IT Managed Services at Telent, said: “This contract award demonstrates that long-term transformation is possible when technology partners truly understand their customers’ mission and work collaboratively to achieve it.

“By keeping vital IT systems running 24/7, we help ensure that East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service can focus entirely on what matters most that is protecting lives, property and the communities they serve.”

Cloud-first scope and service resilience

The programme is intended to make critical systems faster, more reliable and more connected, with a focus on maintaining consistent emergency response.

Justine Cadogan, Assistant Director Digital, Technology & Change at ESFRS, said: “Our technology systems are central to how we serve and protect our communities.

“Continuing our partnership with Telent gives us the confidence that our digital infrastructure will remain secure, reliable and fit for the future, supporting our firefighters and staff in delivering the best possible service for the communities of East Sussex.”

The statement said the enhanced infrastructure will strengthen cybersecurity, improve performance and data access and streamline information-sharing across teams.

The agreement also includes co-developing ESFRS’s future IT strategy, with work to consider opportunities in automation and predictive analytics to support planning, coordination and resource management across the Service.

Work delivered since 2016

The award follows a public procurement process and builds on a nine-year partnership between the organisations, dating back to 2016.

The statement said Telent has modernised ESFRS’s IT infrastructure, migrated legacy systems and provided round-the-clock managed services across more than 75 IT service categories.

These categories include station end mobilisation, wired and Wi-Fi network management and end-user support for stations and front-line crews.

It also includes digitising previously manual and paper-based processes for fire safety visits, including a tablet-based application for Site Specific Risk Information visits.
