Extended RIPCI approval for MOBOTIX thermal systems in Spain

MOBOTIX has received an expanded “Technical Evaluation of Suitability” (Evaluación Técnica de Idoneidad) from Applus, a certification body recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Industry.

According to MOBOTIX, the approval is part of Spain’s Fire Protection Systems Regulation (Reglamento de Instalaciones de Protección Contra Incendios / RIPCI) and now includes additional hardware beyond the company’s existing certified thermal sensors.

The extension covers new interface boxes — the Mx-4IOA-Box and Mx-NPAA-Box — as well as the full range of M73 Thermal Radiometry (TR) sensors.

New certification supports broader project applications

MOBOTIX stated that the expanded RIPCI certification enables broader use of its systems in large-scale or complex fire protection environments.

Christian Cabirol, CTO of MOBOTIX AG, said: “With this extended certification, we are underlining our innovative strength and our strong position in the Spanish market.”

Domestic vs. Commercial: British fire systems and regulations explained, with Apollo Fire Detectors

Understanding domestic and commercial fire systems 

A common misconception is that domestic fire systems are limited to standalone smoke detectors while commercial systems are large panel-based setups. However, fire safety exists on a spectrum, especially in hybrid environments like HMOs, student flats or high-rise buildings. Large residential blocks may need comprehensive fire systems, while small commercial premises might only require basic smoke alarms. 

Both environments require tailored fire safety solutions, ensuring that fire detection and alarm systems are suitable for the specific risks associated with each setting.

The assumption that commercial systems are inherently more advanced than domestic systems is not always correct, as some large residential buildings may have more extensive requirements than small commercial properties. 

For clarity, this discussion focuses on fire safety laws in England, which may differ in Wales and Scotland. 

Residential fire safety standards 

Domestic fire alarm systems fall under BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020, covering installation and design requirements for new and existing homes. Grades range from F2 (basic battery-powered detectors) to A (full-scale fire systems with detectors, sounders and central control units) conforming to BS EN54. 

Most UK homes use battery-powered photo-electric smoke alarms. While no specific legal mandate requires them in private residences, landlords must install at least one per floor in rental properties. Testing is required only when a new tenant moves in. Mains-powered detectors are often recommended for reliability. Best practice suggests weekly testing, though compliance is rare. 

In some properties, such as high-rise residential buildings, fire detection systems may need to be integrated with evacuation and alerting systems to ensure that residents receive timely warnings in case of fire. High-rise settings complicate the role of domestic smoke alarms since they only detect localised fires within individual apartments, offering no building-wide coverage. 

Commercial fire safety standards 

UK commercial fire safety regulations are primarily governed by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO), supplemented by the Fire Safety Act 2021. Even basic commercial systems surpass domestic alarms in reliability, false alarm reduction, fire spread identification and emergency response guidance. These features are crucial in high-rise buildings where timely detection and evacuation planning can save lives. 

Current laws require businesses to have an appropriate fire detection system, though specifics depend on building size and usage. Smaller businesses not engaged in high-risk activities (e.g., flammable material storage) may not require full-scale systems.

The law is not 100% clear, especially to someone with no experience of the fire industry, and there are many grey areas, which is why a fire risk assessment (FRA) is mandatory and why you should always get an expert to undertake it, especially if you have any doubts about what is required.

If you don’t believe that a fire system is needed, you need to state this in your FRA, including the reasons why you have reached this conclusion. If a fire incident later occurs and you’ve got this wrong, it could come back to haunt you. 

Commercial premises must also consider additional fire safety measures such as emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, door retainers (such as the Apollo ADR), and sprinkler systems where necessary. These supplementary safety measures help protect occupants and property by reducing fire spread and aiding evacuation efforts.  

Smoke detectors: domestic vs. commercial 

Domestic smoke alarms, found in 92% of UK homes, must meet BS EN14604:2005, outlining basic specifications but lacking the rigour of commercial standards.

Commercial fire systems vary in classification, from Category M (manual systems) to Category L1 (full automatic protection). While system configurations differ, detector types—heat, optical, photoelectric, or hybrid—remain largely consistent across installations. 

In commercial settings, fire alarms are typically interconnected and monitored, allowing for a rapid response from fire services when necessary. Many systems also incorporate advanced features such as fault monitoring, ensuring that any malfunctions in the system are detected and addressed promptly. 

The detector debate 

Fire industry discussions continue over appropriate detector use. Smoke detectors are generally preferred, as heat detectors can be slow to respond to smouldering fires. However, heat detectors are useful in kitchens and laboratories, where smoke detectors may be prone to false alarms. 

Commercial environments often use dual-detection (“double-knock”) systems, where both smoke and heat detectors must confirm a fire before triggering a full alarm. This approach is useful in complex environments like hospitals, care homes and high-rise residential buildings, where unnecessary evacuations should be minimised. 

Technological advancements have led to hybrid, multi-criteria and aspirating smoke detectors, offering faster, more reliable detection while minimising false alarms.

Though costlier than heat detectors, these solutions provide significant safety advantages.

Multi-sensor detectors, which combine optical and heat detection, are increasingly being deployed in both commercial and domestic settings due to their ability to reduce false alarms while maintaining sensitivity to real fire events.

Tri-sensor detectors, such as the Apollo Soteria Tri-Sensor, combine optical, heat and CO detection to provide comprehensive cover to any setting, while preventing false alarms. 

Blurred lines 

Until 2017, domestic and commercial fire systems were distinctly separate. Residential buildings had commercial-grade systems in communal areas but no mandatory coverage in private apartments. Post-Grenfell, regulations have evolved, especially for high-rise buildings (although in the wake of the Grenfell Tower Phase 2 Report, it is unclear what legislative changes will be made in the future). 

Many high-rises with defective cladding now feature BS 5839-1 Part 1 systems, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Ideally, these should transition to BS 8629-compliant evacuation systems once safety issues are resolved. In some cases, installed apartment detectors can be repurposed to alert management and emergency services without triggering a full evacuation. 

Some residential properties, despite being registered as businesses, do not require commercial fire systems. Furnished holiday lets, for example, follow standard buy-to-let rules, requiring only one smoke detector per floor. However, given that these properties may be occupied by different guests at different times, ensuring a robust fire safety system is particularly important. 

Evolving standards 

UK fire safety regulations are constantly evolving. Since February 2022, Scottish law mandates interconnected smoke alarms in all homes, including privately owned and rental properties, with furnished holiday lets requiring networked fire alarms unless a commercial system is in place. Similar laws may soon extend across the UK. 

Commercial fire safety regulations have also tightened post-Grenfell.

The Fire Safety Act 2021 focused on high-rise buildings, while the Building Safety Bill (2022) introduced broader commercial fire safety requirements. While these laws do not directly alter fire detector technology, they impact system management, installation, and future industry developments. 

In response to these evolving regulations, building owners and managers must remain proactive in reviewing and updating fire safety measures. Regular maintenance and professional inspections ensure compliance and help to address potential risks before they become major hazards.

X-Sense is introducing two new smoke alarm models at the Fire Safety Event (FSE) 2025, taking place from 8 to 10 April at the NEC in Birmingham.

According to X-Sense, the new devices include a wireless model with voice alerts and a hybrid model featuring a removable RF module.

The company will display the new alarms at Booth 4/C112 alongside its wider product range, including carbon monoxide detectors, home security systems and other sensors.

Voice alert smoke alarm model aimed at home use

X-Sense is displaying the XS0B-MR, a wireless smoke alarm designed to assist faster emergency response by issuing voice alerts such as “Smoke detected in the bedroom.”

The company states this feature may help children and elderly people respond more quickly compared to traditional sirens.

The XS0B-MR retails for €29.99 and can wirelessly interconnect with multiple alarms.

To demonstrate the impact of these technologies, let’s take a closer look at the University of Sussex, where Call Systems Technology’s (CST) wireless fire safety systems were implemented. With the challenge of managing over 84 individual fire alarm systems across its campus, the University needed a reliable and integrated solution.

Installation Process

Blackline Safety expands global presence in fire hazmat safety technology

Global customer growth reported in fire hazmat monitoring

Blackline Safety has reported a 175 percent increase in the number of fire hazmat customers using its connected personal and area monitors worldwide over the past year.

According to Blackline Safety, customer numbers grew from 127 to 350 over the last 12 months.

The company stated that thousands of users are now operating its monitoring solutions across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

The company attributed this growth to increased demand among fire and hazmat teams for tools that provide enhanced monitoring and real-time data access during high-risk operations.

Blackline stated that its cloud-connected devices allow remote tracking of personnel safety conditions and support faster response decisions.

NewEXO 8 Gamma monitors set for initial shipment

Blackline Safety has announced that the first shipments of its EXO 8 Gamma area monitors will begin this month.

The monitor is capable of detecting gamma radiation in addition to up to eight gases simultaneously.

According to Blackline, EXO 8 is the only portable area monitor with direct-to-cloud capability and simultaneous gas and gamma detection features.

Doug Mayer, Fire Hazmat Business Development Specialist at Blackline Safety, said: “EXO 8’s gamma detection capability is a game-changer for fire and hazmat teams — not only in emergency response, but also in public event monitoring.”

Mayer added: “From gas leaks and chemical spill incidents of all kinds, and now gamma radiation, we’ve reimagined safety solutions to help responders deploy equipment faster, get more gas exposure information, and share data for real-time visibility.”

Fire teams adopt wider range of connected safety tools

In addition to the EXO 8 Gamma, Blackline Safety reported ongoing uptake of its broader range of connected safety technologies by fire-hazmat teams.

These include G7 personal gas detectors featuring cellular and satellite connectivity, two-way voice communication, fall and no-motion alerts, and automatic data logging.

The G6 single gas detector, offering real-time connectivity and emergency SOS functions, is also in use.

Fire departments are also using Blackline Live, the company’s cloud-based platform that provides real-time information on personnel location, gas exposures and device status from any internet-connected device.

Travis Rebello, Firefighter and Hazmat Coordinator for the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts, said: “Blackline’s remote monitoring capabilities allow me to log in any time and see what my guys are dealing with and then to triage what other assets are needed on the scene at any time.”

Fire industry professionals to see new technology at FDIC International 2025

Blackline Safety will be exhibiting its connected safety products at FDIC International 2025 in Indianapolis from 7 to 12 April.

The company confirmed that it will showcase its portfolio, including the EXO 8 Gamma, G7 and G6 wearables, and the Blackline Live platform, at Booth 943.

FDIC International is one of the fire sector’s largest exhibitions, attracting fire and rescue personnel from multiple regions for demonstrations, training and equipment evaluation.

In March 2023, Cygnus achieved EN 54 certification for its fire detection and alarm system, SmartNet. This significant milestone marked the beginning of an important journey for the company.

As the company celebrates the two-year anniversary of this achievement, Stephen Marsh, Head of Sales at Cygnus, discusses the evolution of wireless technology and what the future holds.  

In today’s smart homes and buildings, the Internet of Things is driving an explosion in the number and type of smart products that can be linked together on a network. This can also be seen in the world of fire and security systems, where video surveillance, access control and alarm systems are increasingly built on wireless networks. 

A wireless mesh network for fire detection and alarm systems   

A wireless mesh network is a decentralised network architecture consisting of interconnected nodes. Nodes are radio frequency transceivers that facilitate network communications, such as network switches, routers, switches or printers. In the wireless fire detection and alarm context, nodes are devices such as detectors and sounders.  

Unlike traditional networks that rely on a single central hub, wireless mesh networks distribute data across multiple nodes.

It allows each node to act as both a transmitter and a receiver, creating a self-forming, self-healing mesh network.

This configuration enables seamless communication, as data packets can travel through multiple pathways to reach their destination, ensuring redundancy and minimising the likelihood of network failure. 

In a wireless mesh network, nodes communicate directly with one another, dynamically rerouting data to maintain connectivity – even if one or more nodes fail. Each device has a primary and secondary parent, so if the signal to the primary parent is broken, the secondary parent will take its place, and the device then selects a new secondary parent.

This ‘self-healing’ capacity – coupled with the ability to expand the network by simply adding more nodes – makes wireless mesh networks ideally suited for sites requiring robust and flexible communications systems. 

The advantages of a wireless system 

There are a number of benefits when it comes to wireless systems. Firstly, the absence of wiring significantly reduces installation time and costs. Traditional wired systems require extensive cabling, which can be both time-consuming and expensive. Wireless systems can be installed significantly faster, making them an ideal choice for both new constructions and retrofit projects. 

Moreover, the wireless nature of these systems minimises disruption to the building’s structure and occupants.

There is no extensive impact to the fabric of the building and preserves the integrity of fire barriers. This makes systems such as SmartNet particularly suitable for historic buildings, schools, and other environments where conserving the building’s integrity is crucial. 

EN 54 certification: an important milestone  

Prior to 2008, there was no recognised standard for wireless fire alarm systems. In that year, EN 54 part 25 was published, which set out to ensure that wireless fire alarm systems provide the same level of protection as wired systems. The standard specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for components which use radio frequency (RF) communication links.  

EN 54 introduced several changes to the way wireless alarms should operate, including bi-directional communication, dual battery back-up, and enhanced fault monitoring. It also provided requirements for the evaluation of conformity of the components to the requirements of the standard. 

EN 54 sets the standards for the operation, testing and manufacture of fire detection and alarm systems. Any equipment used for a wireless fire detection and alarm system should be third party certificated to the relevant parts of EN 54.  

The EN 54 certification marked a pivotal moment for Cygnus, establishing SmartNet as the world’s first EN 54 certified, 100% wireless fire detection and alarm system.

Achieving EN 54 certification is a rigorous process that involves extensive testing and evaluation by accredited laboratories. For Cygnus, receiving this certification for SmartNet was a testament to the system’s reliability, effectiveness, and compliance with the highest industry standards.

The EN 54 certification covers various aspects of fire detection and alarm systems, including control and indicating equipment, power supply equipment, and fire detectors.
