JEM Systems training programme focuses on public safety communications

JEM Systems has partnered with DAS University to deliver a training programme focused on Public Safety Distributed Antenna Systems and Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems for fire alarm integrators and low-voltage professionals.

JEM Systems stated that the programme combines theoretical instruction with practical training for professionals working with in-building communication systems used by emergency responders.

The training is intended for professionals involved in the design, installation and maintenance of Public Safety DAS and ERCES systems.

These systems are used to improve radio communication for emergency responders inside buildings where signal coverage may otherwise be limited.

The learning pathway combines classroom-based instruction with practical exercises and real-world scenarios.

Technical content and delivery structure

DAS University provides online training courses and certification programmes focused on Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and emergency communication technologies.

The programme includes technical modules on system architecture and components.

It also covers compliance requirements linked to NFPA 1225, the International Fire Code (IFC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.

Participants receive instruction on site surveys, link budget analysis and coverage testing procedures used to verify system performance.

Additional content addresses system commissioning, troubleshooting and coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), including documentation for compliance and inspection.

Instructors and practical exercises

The training programme includes input from professionals with experience in the design, testing and deployment of DAS and ERCES systems.

Among those referenced in DAS University’s wider training programmes are Tom Warfield, Mike Brownson and David Adams, who have experience in compliance, systems integration and signal testing for communication infrastructure.

Instruction for the programme delivered through the partnership with JEM Systems is led by Nicolas Fornari and Jason Leopoldo, who the company describes as having field experience with ERCES system integration.

JEM Systems stated that the programme includes hands-on exercises using equipment and deployment scenarios intended to reflect installation and commissioning conditions.

The ERCES Master Integrator training programme is delivered through DAS University’s learning platform with live instruction provided through the partnership, and participants are offered an introductory access period before the full curriculum begins.

The sound of school safety, with Johnson Controls

When it comes to creating a safe school environment, compromise is not an option. Architects, contractors and education facility managers must ensure building systems can communicate with clarity and speed when an emergency occurs in a school.  

Whether the threat is inside or outside, students and staff must be alerted as quickly as possible and must understand clearly what actions to take.

Effective emergency alert technology can help achieve this, especially systems that use a combination of visual and audio signals.

The challenge is that many schools currently use multiple systems for emergency communications, which can create problems and confusion. For example, a school might use separate systems for their fire alarms and school lockdown systems. The school lockdown system adds to maintenance overhead, and unlike a fire alarm system, there are no regulation-defined processes to ensure it is maintained and working correctly.  

Other schools may use fire alarm sounders or class change bells in the event of lockdown, which can cause confusion as to what actions students and staff need to take. The lack of clarity can also increase response times during emergency events. And, as with school lockdown systems, there are no current regulatory standards around which systems should be used for these events.  

At the same time, many contractors seek the installation simplicity and streamlined compliance of a single system solution rather than relying on separate fire alarm and lockdown systems. Likewise, architects want to reduce the different types of sounders and other devices located within classrooms and corridors. 

To simplify and safeguard their operations, architects, contractors and education facility managers should consider a single-system solution that can provide compliant fire detection as well as customisable lockdown alarms. Before upgrading, it is important to understand the current state of lockdown procedures and how a single-system solution offers advantages over a multi-system approach. 

Current state of lockdown procedures 

While fire alarm systems are well regulated and evacuation procedures are familiar to most, lockdown and invacuation procedures may be less familiar: 

  • Evacuation: Used during fire events or other emergencies that require students and staff to vacate the building, these alarms alert people to get out of the building safely. 
  • Lockdown: Necessary when there is an active threat on school grounds, such as a hostile force, a lockdown indicates that doors are locked and directs students to stay away from windows or conceal themselves until given a clear signal.  
  • Invacuation lockdown: This is a type of lockdown that indicates a safety risk outside school buildings but with no threat of entry. To prevent exposure to the risk, students remain in the building until the event has cleared. An invacuation might be trigged by a pollutant, fire, or chemical release nearby.  

There are no standards or defined regulations for invacuation lockdowns. Procedures for these situations are often based on a risk assessment and can differ from school to school. Education facility managers often develop invacuation lockdown procedures using best practices from the security and intrusion industry, such as PD 6662 or an equivalent, to activate and provide secure lockdown. The PD 6662 is a document created by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to provide guidelines for the installation, maintenance and operation of intruder alarm systems.  

In other situations, schools may look for solutions intended for the fire detection industry. For example, an addressable fire alarm system can handle, control and manage an invacuation lockdown.

Additionally, an invacuation lockdown system would benefit from the monitoring, integrity and reliability provided by the fire alarm standard BS 5839 for fire detection and alarm systems for buildings.

However, BS 5839 clearly states in clause 16.2.1 that fire alarm sounders should not be used for purposes other than warning of fire. Using the same sounders for other events can cause confusion and loss of critical time. There is also a risk that the system might not be maintained properly or may be altered, which could impact system integrity and compliance. As a result, schools would benefit from using separate sounders and speakers for invacuation lockdown systems. 

Novel strategy: A combined fire detection and lockdown system approach 

With these best practices in mind – and driven by industry demand – a new safe classroom strategy combines lockdown and fire detection technology. The solution uses a combined safety system for lockdowns and fire detection, functioning as a fire detection alarm, invacuation alarm, and class change notification. 

To comply with BS clause 16.2.1, the safe classroom solution uses a combination of red sounders for fire evacuation and white sounders for invacuation, lockdown and even class change. The sounders sit on the same physical loop but are programmed and administered separately. Because they are classified as part of the fire evacuation system, they offer the same high levels of integrity and safety. 

The alarm used in this solution is multi-sensory and customisable, providing options for both audio and visual alerts. With 16 different tones and two volume levels, schools can program this alarm to use different sounds for fire, evacuation, invacuation and class changes. System users can also choose from two flash rates. 

In addition, the safe classroom solution uses reflective sound and reflective light monitoring self-testing for both the fire and invacuation alarm at the same time. This allows system owners, rather than a third-party, to quickly and efficiently test that all sounders and beacons are functioning correctly. All testing is carried out at the panel for up to 20 seconds. 

A combined fire detection and lockdown system approach offers schools several benefits: 

  • Simplicity: A combined system decreases the number of components on the wall. One technician can install it and maintain it, reducing installation and maintenance costs. And, because the invacuation sounders sit on the fire alarm loop, it decreases the amount of cable needed.  
  • Clarity: The system issues clear and concise instructional messaging that directs occupants where to go and what to do, which results in less confusion and panic.  
  • Customisation: With a completely customisable human voice alarm, the combined system provides a better user experience, as well as increased engagement. 

Keeping students safe while they learn is among the highest priorities of any school campus. It’s critical that schools are equipped and prepared to handle a broad range of safety and security concerns. A compliant safe classroom system can quickly alert students to an emergency situation and clearly direct them to take the appropriate action.

NFPA expands US electrical inspection network with Colorado chapter

Colorado chapter joins NFPA Electrical Inspection Section

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has confirmed that the Association for Colorado Inspectors is now an Electrical Inspection Section (EIS) Affiliate Chapter.

According to NFPA, the Colorado-based group will support electrical inspection professionals across the state by providing access to training, education, and networking resources.

The NFPA’s EIS Affiliate Chapter network includes regional associations that collaborate with the NFPA to support code enforcement and inspection personnel.

The Colorado chapter is the fourth to join the programme.

NFPA and Colorado inspectors aim to address electrical hazards

The chapter aims to support the state’s electrical enforcement community in applying NFPA 70, also known as the National Electrical Code (NEC), and other safety standards.

Tim McClintock, NFPA regional electrical specialist, said: “NFPA is pleased to welcome its latest EIS Affiliate Chapter.

“Through this relationship, NFPA and the Colorado electrical enforcement community can unite efforts, using our collective voice to help address today’s current and emerging electrical challenges to advance safety in the community.”

McClintock said the chapter “actively supports electrical inspection professionals who are charged with understanding the NEC and how its requirements are applied”.

Chapter members gain access to specialist NFPA membership

Electrical inspectors in Colorado who join the chapter may qualify for membership in the NFPA Electrical Inspection Section.

This membership includes participation in the code development process, training on changes to the NEC, access to inspection-focused products and services, and opportunities to attend related events.

The NFPA said this initiative is part of a wider effort to engage inspection professionals more closely with the code development and enforcement community.

Initiative follows wider NFPA focus on national support

The Association for Colorado Inspectors joins three other US groups with EIS Affiliate Chapter status: the Southwest Ohio Electrical Organization, North Carolina Electrical Inspector Association, and the Kentucky Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Tom Blevins, president of the Association for Colorado Inspectors, said: “The Colorado electrical inspection community is pleased to be working closely with NFPA to meet today’s electrical safety challenges head on, help expand our impact and position the chapter for the future.”

This expansion aligns with NFPA’s recent increase in regional staffing, including the addition of two new electrical specialist roles.

Greece to operate 80 surveillance drones during 2025 wildfire season

Greece increases aerial surveillance capacity with €6 million donation

The Athens – Macedonian News Agency has reported that Greece’s Civil Protection service will operate 80 drones during the 2025 wildfire season, nearly doubling the 47 units deployed last year.

The increase follows a €6 million donation from the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

According to the Ministry, the drones will be used for aerial surveillance of periurban forest areas to support early warning, prevention, and operational needs during the summer fire season.

Advanced UAV systems to provide continuous monitoring

The surveillance drones will be equipped with real-time data transmission and artificial intelligence tools.

These tools will assist with fire detection, incident recognition, and continuous area monitoring.

Each drone will be supported by an operational management centre to ensure 24-hour monitoring across targeted areas.

The Ministry stated the system will support fire response coordination, mapping, damage assessments, and search-and-rescue operations.

Fire Department to reach 18,000 personnel in 2025

Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis said the Fire Brigade will be staffed by 18,000 people in 2025, including seasonal workers and volunteers.

He stated: “Together with the thousands of volunteers from both the Fire Department and voluntary organisations, by utilising the aerial means that we will have… we are proceeding with the best possible planning in view of this summer.”

He also referenced support from the national fleet, rented aerial assets, and the Aegis programme to increase vehicle availability.

Inter-ministerial cooperation aims to safeguard forest areas and infrastructure

Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou said the initiative would enhance protection for both people and infrastructure.

Papastavrou said: “The fire-protection of our forests, our natural wealth, inhabited areas and above all human life, is a non-negotiable priority.”

He added that the climate crisis requires a state of ongoing readiness and that upgraded prevention tools are essential to protecting the environment and local communities.

HEDNO President Anastasios Manos said: “With this donation, we seal the excellent cooperation that we have had so far with both ministries… to protect our citizens, to protect our infrastructure, to protect our country.”

The care home, which includes a dementia care unit, required technology that could accommodate vulnerable residents while ensuring full coverage and integration with the site’s building management systems.

The care home includes a dedicated unit for dementia care, which posed particular requirements in terms of alarm functionality.

Devices were selected based on their capacity to adjust alarm tones and volumes, in order to reduce the risk of causing distress to residents with dementia.

According to Hochiki, their equipment allowed the fire detection system to be tailored in a way that supported the wellbeing of residents while maintaining effective alerting.

Integration and usability considered throughout the installation

The Hochiki ESP range was chosen in part for its ability to integrate with building management systems.

This was seen as essential for the overall functionality of Merriman Grange, ensuring building services operated efficiently together.

Comelit-PAC wireless fire alarm installed at listed Bradford building

Listed Bradford building receives fire safety upgrade

Comelit-PAC has reported that its LogiFire wireless system has been installed at Guardian House, a listed building in Bradford.

The installation was part of a refurbishment project led by Inspired Neighbourhoods in collaboration with Centurion Fire & Security Ltd, aimed at redeveloping the former Bradford City Registry Office for modern office use and community services.

Guardian House had been unused and was at risk of falling into disrepair. Inspired Neighbourhoods is refurbishing the building as part of a wider regeneration initiative in Bradford city centre.

Wireless system installed to preserve historical structure

Centurion Fire & Security Ltd recommended upgrading the fire detection and alarm system due to issues with the existing infrastructure.

The wireless version of Comelit-PAC’s LogiFire system was selected for installation in the building’s graded areas to avoid the need for additional cabling, which would have impacted the structure.

Comelit-PAC stated that the LogiFire range includes wireless addressable and conventional translators with remote and cloud-based monitoring capability.

Comelit-PAC has announced the installation of its LogiFire wireless system at Guardian House in Bradford.

The listed building, formerly the Bradford City Registry Office, is undergoing refurbishment by Inspired Neighbourhoods.

The LogiFire system was installed by Centurion Fire & Security Ltd to address deficiencies in the previous alarm system.

The wireless solution avoids the need for cabling, helping preserve the building’s historic structure.

The project supports Inspired Neighbourhoods’ goal of community and economic regeneration in Bradford city centre.

SITENET is a temporary fire detection and alarm system that uses Bull Products’ patented Cygnus wireless mesh technology.

The system is EN 54 certified and fully wireless.

Bull Products said it is suitable for a range of construction projects including high-rise and underground works.

The Cygnus Mesh Analyser supports system commissioning and maintenance by mapping the wireless network’s structure and signal strength.

The SITENET system can also be linked with the Cygnus ALERT notification platform for remote event monitoring.

SITEPROTECT system includes lockdown alarms for public spaces

Bull Products will also display SITEPROTECT, its wireless fire, first aid, lockdown and intruder alarm system.

The company said the SITEPROTECT Lockdown system is primarily designed for the education sector but can be used in other large public venues such as shopping centres.

The system uses wireless mesh communication to link remote devices and a central control panel.

According to Bull Products, the lockdown system alerts designated staff when activated, helping to locate the incident and notify emergency services.

Fire detection system installed at 17,000m² Slovakian facility

Hochiki has reported that its ESP intelligent fire detection system has been installed at a new logistics facility in Slovakia.

The 17,000 square metre warehouse, operated by KL Logistic near Galanta, required a tailored fire safety system due to its large scale and the nature of its high-rack storage.

Fire protection specialist Pro Metheus Slovakia oversaw the design and installation of the detection and evacuation system, which features Hochiki’s ESP range and FIRElink aspirating smoke detection system.

ESP devices and aspirating system support early fire detection

Hundreds of Hochiki ESP optical smoke detectors were installed throughout the warehouse to provide early warning in the event of fire.

Hochiki’s FIRElink aspirating smoke detection system was also installed to cover areas where conventional smoke detectors may be less effective, such as dense storage racks and hard-to-access sections.

These systems are networked using Hochiki’s Enhanced System Protocol (ESP), creating a coordinated detection solution across the entire facility.

Control panels and modules integrated with fire suppression system

Central control and monitoring is managed via Hochiki HFP control panels connected through the ESP protocol.

Input and output modules from Hochiki were also installed to integrate the fire detection system with the building’s sprinkler infrastructure.

This configuration enables automated responses in case of a fire, linking detection and suppression through a single coordinated system.

Voice evacuation included for personnel safety

In addition to detection and suppression systems, a voice evacuation solution was implemented across the site.

This enables timely communication with on-site personnel and supports safe evacuation procedures during an emergency.

Senseco Systems acquires Ceaton Security to expand fire detection services in Wales

Ceaton Security joins Senseco Systems in UK-wide fire safety expansion

FRP Advisory Trading has reported that Cardiff-based Ceaton Security has been acquired by Senseco Systems, a UK fire protection specialist, in a deal designed to strengthen fire detection services across the UK.

Ceaton Security, which was established in 1991, offers fire detection, security, automation and fire door systems.

The company provides services to both public and private sector clients including the Welsh Government, Great Western Railway and the Welsh Rugby Union.

The acquisition was supported by FRP Corporate Finance.

The team was led by director Thomas Edwards and supported by executive Jade Burgess and associate Twm Westcott.

Fire detection business retains name following acquisition

Ceaton Security will continue operating under its current name alongside the Senseco Systems brand.

The decision is aimed at supporting joint growth while maintaining Ceaton’s existing client relationships.

Senseco will integrate Ceaton’s capabilities into its national operations, which include fire detection, sprinklers, suppression, security, passive fire protection and automation systems.

The acquisition is part of Senseco’s ongoing buy-and-build strategy.
