What inspired you to take on the role of Technical Director at the IFE?

I’ve always been inspired by the institution’s commitment to advancing fire safety and being a member always helped me within my career, deepening my understanding of fire.

Having spent years in the fire sector, I saw an opportunity to contribute to the profession on a broader scale, guiding the IFE in shaping the future of fire safety through technical excellence.

In what ways has your past work in the fire sector influenced your vision for the IFE?

Having served as Deputy Assistant Commissioner and Head of Fire Safety at London Fire Brigade, and more recently as Technical Advisor at the IFE, my work towards emerging technology and electric vehicles will greatly assist in my efforts to enhance global fire safety standards.

In my previous position, I led initiatives to develop and implement cutting-edge fire safety measures, particularly in response to the evolving landscape of technology so I’m looking forward to continuing efforts in this area.

Are there any immediate areas of focus or initiatives you’re excited to embark on in your new role?

Support the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to develop the institution’s involvement and views on contemporary issues in the sector, as well as working closely with IFE headquarters staff to ensure the improvement of technical resources for members.

Could you share your thoughts on leading the IFE’s technical collaborations and special interest groups?

Of course! I’ll be developing the IFE’s position on larger sector issues and informing members about the Institution’s participation in various working groups and industry forums.

My responsibilities will focus on working closely with similar organisations and institutions around the world whilst acting as a liaison for worldwide professional registration – a key focus for the IFE this year.

Will the IFE update its qualifications and competency frameworks?

One of my main areas will be aligning competency frameworks to emerging trends and new standards.

I’ll be working closely with similar institutions and PEI’s worldwide, acting as a liaison for global professional registration – this is a massive focus for the IFE in 2024.

How will digital platforms impact the IFE’s future?

Digital platforms are integral to the future of the IFE and we intend to leverage technology to improve training programmes, webinars, and knowledge-sharing.

Exploring virtual collaboration technologies to link our worldwide community and facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices is part of this.

How will the IFE tackle sustainability challenges in fire safety?

We’ll focus on promoting environmentally responsible practices within the fire safety sector and encouraging the adoption of sustainable materials and technologies.

How do you see fire engineering practices evolving

I foresee a stronger emphasis on data-driven decision-making and integrated, holistic approaches to fire safety.

IFE invites members and stakeholders to contribute to future strategic planning

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) is calling on its members and external stakeholders to participate in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction for the 2025 – 2029 period.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity for professionals and interested parties to influence the future of fire engineering by sharing insights and experiences.

IFE: Engagement through virtual strategy development sessions

To facilitate this collaborative effort, IFE will conduct virtual Strategy Development Sessions in two phases.

These sessions aim to gather diverse perspectives to inform the strategic priorities for the forthcoming period.

The strategy will reflect a shared ambition to advance the science, practice, and professionalism of fire engineering globally.

Phase 1: Identifying strategic issues and opportunities

Scheduled for March 2024, the first phase of these sessions will focus on a strategic analysis of the global fire safety landscape.

Participants are encouraged to discuss the key strategic issues and identify opportunities for improvement.

This phase is open to both IFE members and external stakeholders, with the deadline for registration set for 16th February 2024.

IFE poll results direct National Apprenticeship Week towards an inclusive fire sector

Survey highlights need for awareness in fire sector apprenticeships

As the country prepares for National Apprenticeship Week, a recent survey by The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has shed light on the public’s perception of apprenticeships within the fire sector.

According to the poll, 57% of participants feel there is a lack of awareness about the wide range of opportunities available through fire-related apprenticeships.

Furthermore, another survey found that 45% of respondents believe the diverse job roles within the fire sector are not sufficiently represented in current apprenticeship programmes.

These findings underscore a pressing need for enhanced visibility and understanding of the varied career paths within the fire industry.

The IFE has pledged to promote further vocational routes into the fire sector, acknowledging the critical role of apprenticeships in the future of training across the built environment and other industries.

The results from these surveys highlight the significance of developing apprenticeship programmes that effectively showcase the full spectrum of careers available within the fire sector.

Enhancing pathways into the fire sector

In an effort to create more entry points into the fire sector, individuals who successfully complete their end-point assessment for the Operational Firefighter course at the Fire Service College in Moreton-In-Marsh can now apply for Technician grade membership at the IFE.

This membership is a recognition of two years of comprehensive practical and theoretical study, aligned with the competencies required in the field.

Steve Hamm, CEO of IFE, commented on the initiative: “The modern apprenticeship pathway not only ensures a more dynamic and inclusive workforce but also encourages individuals from various backgrounds and experiences to contribute to the fire sector.

“As a professional body, advocating for diversity and supporting candidates in their professional development is paramount.

Supporting future fire professionals in National Apprenticeship Week

To assist those embarking on a career in fire, the IFE announced last year that its Student membership offering is now free.

This initiative extends to IFE exam candidates and individuals pursuing fire-related studies, providing them with access to learning resources, knowledge, and an international network of contacts to support their career development.

Governed by established standards and regulations, this industry conducts controlled experiments in specialised laboratories to assess critical factors, including fire resistance, propagation, flammability, and smoke generation.

The pinnacle of success in this rigorous process is awarding certification to products, or listing products, that meet stringent safety criteria, thereby facilitating their entry into the market.

Operating globally and spanning various product categories, this industry remains dynamic and adaptable, continually incorporating technological advancements and responding to regulatory shifts to effectively mitigate fire hazards and safeguard public well-being through product certification listings.Top of Form

Before we delve into these distinctions, it is imperative to understand that before a fire protection material, product, assembly, or structural element is introduced to the market, it must undergo meticulous fire-testing and certification processes aligned with its intended purpose.

To achieve product approval in Saudi Arabia, manufacturers must have certification if they are intended for sale within the country and the Kingdom’s construction projects.

To achieve product approval, local and international manufacturers must achieve Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) approval via the SABER platform.

When inspecting a project for fire compliance of installed products and fire safety systems, KSA Civil Defense relies on products and fire safety systems to be SASO-approved by one of the approved 3rd party testing laboratories and certification bodies that are listed in the SABER system platform.

These 3rd party certification bodies include Applus, Efectis, ESL Certification, FM, Intertek, TBW, UL Solutions, etc.

Key aspects of the fire testing and certification industry include

Standards and Regulations

The KSA industry operates based on established national (SASO) and international (ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, BS, EN, FM, IBC, IEC, ISO, NFPA, UL, etc.) standards and regulations that specify the minimum safety requirements for various products in relation to fire.

These standards may cover a wide range of items, including building materials, electrical devices, furniture, and more.

Laboratory Testing & Test Report

Fire testing laboratories within KSA and internationally conduct controlled experiments to simulate real-world fire conditions.

Fire testing involves a physical testing process and a comprehensive assessment identifying conditions, fire behaviour, and any limitations for installing the material, product, assembly, or structural element.

These tests evaluate factors such as reaction to fire (RtF) and fire resistance (FR).

RtF considerations include flammability, flame spread, smoke generation, heat release rate, and other fire-related characteristics.

FR key criteria typically encompass integrity (for fire protection-rated applications), insulation (for fire resistance-rated applications), radiation, smoke leak, and load-bearing capacity.

These tests follow the established Saudi and international standards and regulations.

The results help determine the product’s ability to resist or mitigate fire hazards.

The output of both RtF and FR is detailed test reports and adherence to specific test standards identified by SASO and the Saudi Building Code (SBC).

Certification and Compliance

Products that pass the prescribed fire tests are awarded certifications, indicating their compliance with specific fire safety standards.

Certification is often a prerequisite for products entering the market and for use on construction projects across KSA and ensures they meet the necessary safety criteria.

It should be noted that a test report and product certification should not be confused with a test certificate or test report certificate.

SASO and the SBC do not mandate test certificates and test report certificates as they do not typically provide details of the product or system components and installation information for applicators and installers; the details of the sample are habitually self-declared and not verified by a 3rd party; they do not provide provenance and traceability of the material to ensure that the product is the same as a properly tested and certified product; and these can be unaccredited or by a non-recognised lab with no means of validating the product to ensure compliance.

Product Categories

The fire testing and certification industry covers various products and materials, including building and construction materials, textiles, electrical and electronic devices, furniture, automotive components, and more.

Each category within the Kingdom may have its specific standards and testing procedures.

It is best to refer to the SBC and SASO requirements.

Global Scope

Given the international nature of trade and commerce, industry often operates globally.

Saudi organisations may seek certifications that are recognised across different countries and regions to facilitate the smooth movement of products in the global market.

This is why Saudi Arabia and SASO have adopted many international standards or have had their locally developed standards internationally recognised.

Building Regulations

Building regulations ensure strict fire safety standards in construction.

They require fire testing and certification, validating compliance with safety standards.

Regulatory bodies enforce these rules through mandated inspections.

Documentation is vital for evidence.

Building codes offer guidance and enhance fire safety.

The main goal is occupant safety and minimising fire risks.

The regulations cover materials, escape routes, alarms, and more.

In their building regulations, North and South America and many other nations globally identify various American and international standards like ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, BS, EN, FM, IBC, IEC, ISO, NFPA, UL, etc., for products to be tested, classified, and certified.

Saudi Building Code (SBC)

Through Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia drives construction projects across sectors like NEOM, The Red Sea, Amaala, AlUla, Qiddiya, Riyadh Metro, Roshn, Jeddah Central, King Salman International Airport, Arabian Highland, King Salman International Park, Green Riyadh, Seven, Rua Al Madinah, Riyadh Sports Boulevard, Diriyah gate, and more.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabian facilities need safe, comfortable, and efficient building codes.

In KSA, varying climates and seismic activity heighten the importance of these codes.

The SBC ensures quality, protects the economy, and safeguards citizens, ensuring high standards, safety, and sustainability.

It shapes the nation’s future, adhering to global best practices.

These codes provide guidelines for specifiers, project consultants, contractors, manufacturers, engineers, technicians, and citizens, ensuring safe work practices and resolving disputes in the construction sector.

The SBC originates in the International Building Code (IBC) and typically identifies (SBC 801, Chapter 80) various American and international standards like ANSI, ASTM, IBC, IEC, ISO, NFPA, FM, UL, etc., for testing, classifying, and certifying products and systems.

In some situations, where products and materials are being imported from markets that require these to be tested to alternative international fire testing, classification, and certification standards like API, ASME, BS, EN, AS, etc., can be approved and accepted via acceptance equivalence framework guidelines and assessment, subject to project acceptance and authority approvals.

Certification – Listings and Approvals versus Listed or Approved

The facets of fire testing and certification are intricately interconnected, with one pivotal aspect being the Global Scope, which can occasionally introduce complexities in comprehending the interrelations within this sector.

To the layperson, it can be quite confusing attempting to comprehend and understand the differences between a “test standard”, “tested to or per or following a standard”, and “certificated/listed” or “approved” when internationally recognised brands can cross over all products and services (standards writers/producers, testing labs and certification bodies).

This confusion has resulted in some instances of installed, tested, and certified products and systems being rejected by project supervision consultants and site engineers, resulting in extremely costly delays and variation orders to projects.

An example is uncertainty around what is published and mandated, e.g., a UL or FM Standard, what is tested to a UL or FM standard, what is certified to a UL or FM standard, what is listed with UL Solutions (UL Listed), or what is approved by FM (FM Approved).

This becomes grey and muddy for the many designers, specifiers, and site engineers across KSA.

A common occurrence, due to this confusion (typically from being ill-informed), is that project specifications intended to identify a particular test standard to satisfy compliance and safety in accordance with the likes of the Saudi Building Code get lost in translation and can unknowingly identify UL Listed or FM Approved when the SBC intends that the product or material be tested and certified per the test method identified in the mandated requirement.

This can result in the project being limited in its procurement of products, increasing purchasing costs and causing costly project delays due to project rejections and contractual disputes arising from the misunderstanding of the building regulations requirement.

However, it should also be noted that in some instances, the insurance company underwriting the future building and facility, after project completion and handover, sometimes insists on a project having certain installed products and materials to be UL-listed or FM-approved.

It is always advisable to check with the project owner to verify if this is the case and requirement of the project before proceeding; however, a majority of projects across the Kingdom have a requirement only to have the products and systems tested and certified following the SBC and SASO requirements.

Delving deeper into test standards, they are a set of established criteria and procedures that delineate how a particular test should be conducted to assess the fire safety and performance of products, materials, or systems.

Organisations craft these standards, national or international standardisation bodies, and hold widespread recognition and acceptance within the industry.

Notable examples of such Organisations include the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO), the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), and various national standardisation bodies.

FM and UL Solutions are global standards companies that develop safety standards for various consumer goods, especially those with electrical parts.

Both organisations have dedicated research divisions constantly researching safe practices for various products and materials.

Types of accreditation

Tested per FM or UL Standard

Any laboratory with accreditation for ISO 17025 can conduct tests according to UL standards, as long as the required furnace and equipment for those specific standards are available.

FM Approved

When FM is the Testing and Certifying Body after the products are tested to the FM requirement and found to function well and comply with standards, they are then approved (certified) to be FM Approved by FM.

UL Listed

When UL Solutions is the Testing and Certifying Body after the products are tested to UL standards and found to function well and comply with standards, they are then certified to be UL Listed by UL Solutions.

Certified/Listed per a product tested to an FM or UL Standard

Accordingly, any accredited 3rd party lab can test the product to any of the UL standards and any accredited Conformity Assessment Body (CAB), more commonly referred to as a certifying body, can certify the product to any FM or UL standards.

All Certifying Bodies have a publicly available listing directory for listing the tested and certified products.

These listing directories contain fundamental information about listed products, systems, or assemblies such as Certificate number and revisions, Certificate holder, Product Manufacturer, Product categories, Product type, Standard tested to, and versions, Date of issue, Date of expiry and Current status of the certificate.

In Saudi Arabia, these companies include Applus, Efectis, ESL Certification, FM, Intertek, TBW, UL Solutions, etc.

However, if a project specification, designer, or project engineer requires “UL Listed”, only UL Solutions – as a certifying body- can certify and list the product as “UL Listed”.

Approvals

A product that undergoes testing and certification to FM or UL standards by any certifying body receives a certification certificate based on FM or UL testing standards and is listed on a Certification Body’s (CB) portal is entirely equivalent to a product that has been tested, certified and either approved by FM or listed by UL Solutions to the exact same standard and procedure.

The fire Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) industry in Saudi Arabia and globally plays a vital role in evaluating and ensuring the fire safety of various products and materials.

This industry operates based on established standards and regulations, conducting controlled experiments to assess factors of fire performance.

Certification is awarded to products meeting stringent safety criteria, facilitating market entry.

To gain product approval in Saudi Arabia, manufacturers must obtain certification, particularly for use in the country and its construction projects.

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) approval through the SABER platform is essential.

The Kingdom’s Civil Defense relies on SASO-approved products and fire safety systems examined by approved 3rd party testing laboratories and certification bodies listed in the SABER system platform.

Understanding the distinctions between terms like “UL Tested,” “UL Listed,” and “FM Approved” is crucial.

Misinterpretations can lead to costly project delays and disputes.

It’s essential to align product testing and certification with the Saudi Building Code’s requirements and SASO standards.

To clarify, “Tested per FM or UL Standard” can be conducted by any ISO 17025 accredited lab, while “FM Approved” and “UL Listed” indicate certification by FM and UL Solutions, respectively.

SFPE appoints Chris Jelenewicz as new Chief Executive Officer

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the appointment of Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE, as its new Chief Executive Officer.

This significant development in the leadership of the world’s foremost professional body for fire protection and fire safety engineering marks a new chapter for the organisation.

Jelenewicz, a seasoned member of the SFPE team since 2004, succeeds Nicole Boston, CAE, who served as the CEO from October 2013 through April 2023.

Having most recently held the roles of Chief Engineer and Interim CEO, Jelenewicz brings a wealth of expertise to his new position.

He possesses academic credentials in fire protection engineering and management from the University of Maryland and is a licensed professional engineer in this specialised field.

His appointment is a testament to his reputation as a respected and trusted industry leader.

Leadership transition and strategic vision for SFPE

The transition of leadership comes at a pivotal time for the SFPE.

With over 5,300 members, the society is at a critical juncture in its evolution.

Bob Libby, PE, FSFPE, President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, highlighted the importance of Jelenewicz’s appointment: “The SFPE Board of Directors continues their support, affirming that Chris is the right person to guide the Society.

“In line with our Mission – to define, develop, & advance the use of engineering best practices, expand the scientific knowledge base; & educate the global fire safety community to reduce fire risk – Chris will concentrate on what matters most and effectively serve the needs of our expanding 5,300+ member community,” said Libby.

He further added: “Under Chris’s leadership, SFPE is embracing a new strategic plan, navigating a thoughtful staff restructuring, and will ensure we not only meet the needs of our members but also strengthen the very foundation of SFPE for a sustainable and impactful future.”

‘Acceptance of the use of fire protection engineering in the industry has shifted.’

Our profession has quite a few challenges ahead, some are very apparent, but others are not.

The obvious one is how sustainability aspects are already affecting us, and with no doubt it will affect us even more in the future. The pace of sustainability measures that are being incorporated into industry and into our society as a whole is steadily increasing. Sustainability is becoming a key concept in most areas — whether it is water consumption, energy production, or development of new materials – and it touches everything.

Sustainability is obviously entering into many aspects of the fire protection engineering profession. Since facilitating a sustainable and fire-resilient built environment for future societies has become an essential objective, fire protection engineers must understand how sustainability is an important aspect of daily jobs. 

It is important for fire protection engineers, architects, policymakers, researchers, code officials, fire service representatives, and sustainability professionals to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the aim of promoting sustainable and fire-resilient built environments. This requires understanding the diversity of sustainability and fire resilience design objectives for the built environment. It also includes balancing the diverse and sometimes competing objectives of current and emerging technologies for building sustainability and fire safety.

Building designers will need to go beyond the prescriptive codes to design sustainable and fire resilient buildings. This will require that fire protection engineers (and others) implement alternative fire safety solutions that balance social, environmental, and economic impacts of fire.

There is a need for a change within our industry, a necessary step to truly understand how sustainability impacts fire risks.  This starts with thinking about how sustainability impacts the industry as a whole through design, research, legislation, etc. If the fire protection engineering profession can understand this impact and consider it in our daily work, it will have taken the first important step.

I would also like to touch upon another important topic that has been identified as one of the key challenges for our profession – competence.

Looking across the globe during the last decade, acceptance of the use of fire protection engineering in the industry has shifted. Many national regulations have performance-based codes, something that is necessary if we want to take real advantage of the principles of fire protection engineering in our projects. Buildings and infrastructure need a first-principles approach to justify fire safety goals, and that can only be done by using fire protection engineering. However, during the last few years, several national codes have restricted engineering freedom by imposing design restrictions for technical analysis.

Why is the profession going in this direction? In essence, it is because the technical quality of fire protection engineering analyses, the design solutions, and the performance criteria for projects can be so varied — ranging from excellent, to deficient, to everything in between. The fire safety of buildings often comes down to one important aspect: the competence of the fire protection engineer.

There is a definite need to create industry awareness. Increasing the global awareness of the specialized knowledge and experience needed for competent practice of fire protection engineering is a very important task needed to steer our profession in the right direction. This will help the fire protection engineering discipline gain professional recognition and acceptance in countries where it is not yet recognized. This recognition will let other professional engineers know there is an intricacy of knowledge and relevant experience required to ensure that appropriate fire protection engineering considerations have been taken.

Fire engineering consultancy strengthens board with new directors

OFR Consultants, a prominent fire engineering practice, has expanded its leadership by appointing four longstanding colleagues to its board of directors.

The company has welcomed Stewart Dabin, Dr Danny Hopkin, Jack Wilshaw, and Richard Rankin to join the existing board members, Andy Passingham and Ryan McCreadie.

These appointments are part of a broader initiative by OFR Consultants to bolster its team and fuel its growth strategy.

New board members bring a wealth of experience

The newly appointed directors bring a diverse range of expertise to the board. Stewart Dabin, based in London, has been instrumental in leading the Residential sector since joining the business in 2018.

Jack Wilshaw, also from London, has been a key figure in promoting best practices and managing significant accounts since his arrival in 2019.

Richard Rankin has led the Manchester office for five years, focusing on residential, healthcare, and education sector projects.

Dr Danny Hopkin, on board since 2017, has played a pivotal role in developing OFR’s technical capabilities and driving research initiatives.

Sarah Black has been appointed as principal engineer, with a group of new graduates also joining the ranks.

Founded in Manchester in 2016, the firm has since opened multiple offices across the UK.

SFPE announces registration for fire protection engineering PE exam review course

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has announced the opening of registration for its Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Fire Protection Exam Review Course.

Commencing on November 28, 2023, and spanning until April 2024, the course is strategically timed to assist candidates in their preparation for the Fire Protection Engineering PE Exam scheduled for April 16th, 2024.

Earlier this year, the SFPE Board of Directors approved a position statement titled: “Engineering a Sustainable and Fire Resilient Built Environment”.

This statement recognises the importance of sustainability and fire resilience as key objectives for the built environment, and the necessity for every project to harmonise these aims.

SFPE’s efforts to promote sustainability

In an article titled “How SFPE is Developing Opportunities for the Fire Protection Engineering Profession to Influence & Elevate Sustainability in the Built Environment”, SFPE President, Jimmy Jönsson, FSFPE, and Interim Chief Executive Officer, Chris Jelenewicz, PE, FSFPE, outlined the ways fire protection engineers can work alongside architects, policymakers, researchers, and other professionals.

Their goal was to foster a constructive dialogue centred on the promotion of sustainable and fire-resilient built environments.

SFPE Foundation’s focus on sustainability

Placing sustainability at its core, the SFPE Foundation adopted a fresh vision statement in December 2022.

This focuses on engineering a world that is resilient, sustainable, and fire-safe for everyone.

The SFPE Foundation recently released a report, “Risk and Performance Assessment Framework for a Sustainable and Fire Resilient Building Environment (SAFR-BE)”, to pave the way for future tools assessing sustainable and fire-resilient buildings.

Authored by Brian Meacham, Håkan Frantzich, Margaret McNamee, and Erik Kimblad, the report’s findings are available for on-demand viewing in a dedicated webinar.

Grand Challenges Initiative’s role

The SFPE Foundation’s Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI) unveiled a white paper on sustainability and resilience titled “Grand Challenges in Resilience & Sustainability:

A 10-Year Plan for Strategic Cooperation in Research and Education to Advance Fire Engineering”.

SFPE Symposium: Join experts and leaders in advancing fire safety and sustainable building design

The emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from human activities has facilitated significant changes to our global climate. 

This in turn has resulted in an increase in the magnitude and frequency of climate- and weather-related hazard events, including wildfires.

The combination is creating significant socio-economic impacts, including property loss, business and insurance losses, illness, injury and death, on top of damages to our ecosystems and environment.

The built environment has been recognized as a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions through use of copious amounts of fossil fuel powered electricity, embodied carbon in construction materials, and other inefficient uses of natural resources.

This has prompted a decades-long effort to increase environmental, social and financial sustainability of the built environment through better thermal insulation of buildings, use of local alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic systems, material with lower embodied carbon, and more.

However, some sustainable building materials, technologies and features have created unintended fire hazards and risks.

Likewise, some sustainable community design principles, such as increased densification, may create unintended urban fire risks, especially when located in the wildland urban interface.

SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium for Fire Safety and Sustainable Building Design

This SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium, in partnership with FRISSBE, is planned for 29-30 November 2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and has been crafted based on the driving need to engage fire safety engineers, architects, policy makers, researchers, fire service representatives and sustainability professionals in meaningful dialogue on how to jointly tackle issues at the nexus of sustainability and fire safety, with the aim to promote sustainable and fire resilient built environments.

This requires understanding the diversity of sustainability and fire resilience design objectives for the built environment, the current and emerging technologies for building sustainability and fire safety, and policy and regulatory challenges around balancing these diverse and sometimes competing objectives.

To help advance interdisciplinary discussions and holistic solutions, a select group of leading thinkers, researchers, and practitioners in both sustainability and in fire safety have been assembled to share their knowledge and engage with the attendees.
