IFSJ Exclusive: Igniting a new era with Kidde Commercial

Arman Saeidnia, General Manager for the Kidde Commercial Fire business in Europe and Africa, discusses the future of the company

In April 2023, Kidde Engineered Systems, a leading fire and life safety brand committed to delivering the highest standards in commercial fire and life safety protection for more than 100 years, announced its new Kidde Commercial brand identity. Kidde Commercial unveiled its new branding and holistic commercial fire solution capabilities at The Fire Safety Event, in Birmingham, UK on 25-27 April.

With plans to continue the introduction its global rebranding introduction across the US, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle Eastern regions, IFSJ spoke to Arman Saeidnia, General Manager for the Kidde Commercial Fire business in Europe and Africa, to find out more about the company and its brand overhaul.

Who is Kidde Commercial and what is its background and current position in the fire and safety market?

Founded by Walter Kidde, a pioneer in early smoke detection and fire suppression, Kidde Commercial is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fire safety products. Each day, we work to expand upon our legacy of innovation, providing advanced solutions to protect people and property from fire and related hazards.

Kidde is a part of Carrier Global Corporation, the leading global provider of healthy, safe, sustainable and intelligent building and cold chain solutions. Kidde Commercial provides systems that help protect properties from small commercial offices to large, complex environments such as airports.

In addition, our range covers both wired and wireless solutions, meaning that we can cover most fire detection applications, whatever the size. We have a great track record with a wide range of installations from the Los Angeles Airport to The Duomo in Florence and many others in between.

Can you tell me about the decision to launch the Kidde Commercial branding – how did this come about and what does it mean for the brand?

Through the introduction of the new Kidde Commercial brand, we will be putting four brands – Aritech, Kidde Engineering Systems, Kilsen and Ziton – under one umbrella.

Customers will start seeing a higher profile of the Kidde brand – a name that is already well known in Europe and Africa – as well as faster product development and more focused customer support as we operate under the Kidde Commercial approach.

What is new in the fire and safety market from Kidde Commercial?

Installers, specifiers and end-users are looking for both value and operational efficiency. As part of this drive, wireless technology is becoming increasingly popular as it is easy to install, operationally efficient and can be fitted without affecting the fabric of the building – vital in applications such as historic buildings

In addition, fire detection systems will increasingly be integrated with Building Automation Systems, allowing for centralised control of all building systems, including fire detection, HVAC and security.

IFSJ Exclusive: Fanning the flames of success

Darren Gamage, Group Chief Operating Officer at Kings Secure Technologies sits down with IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey to discuss the company’s growth in the fire market

Can you tell me about Kings Secure Technologies and its place in the market?

Kings Secure Technologies (KST) is one of the UK’s leading providers of security, fire safety and risk management with a focus on long standing commercial partnerships with our clients. The business was founded in 1971 and rapidly grew to become well known in the provision of security services. Its original focus was predominantly around electronic, mobile and static security services, predominantly into the retail market.

In 2017, a new senior management team including myself was brought into the business to drive expansion into new areas. We were brought in to expand the business. The business has grown substantially over the last five years, predominantly through both organic and acquisition growth.

We took more of an integrated service approach as we were finding clients that are looking to reduce their supply chain, particularly around the field of security, fire and risk. We’ve been quite successful at both retaining and developing our customer base into new sectors. Today, we’ve got over 800 employees across the UK working in a wide range of frontline business support roles.

Our headquarters is in Bradford, and we’ve got operational bases across the country to support our operational teams. Fire and life safety systems is a critical growth area: over the last four years, that’s been the biggest area of investment for us in terms of the development of services that support clients. Our approach is to work with them from early-stage risk identification all the way through to helping close out their fire and life safety risks.

What is your position and background within the industry?

I’m KST’s Chief Operating Officer. I joined the business as part of a new management team in 2017. I support and oversee the strategic planning, and the development of many of our new business streams. As well as the fire side acquisitions, we’ve made some acquisitions in the security side with Cougar Monitoring. We’ve also launched a number of new businesses including our specialist void protection business, which installs temporary fire alarm systems.

I’m responsible for the biggest divisions within the group. Both the fire and the electronic security systems businesses report into myself, including our smoke control business and our fire risk assessment business.

I’m also responsible for merger and acquisitions activity. I find strategic partners to work on, develop our strategic relationships, and then when relevant, make acquisition targets that bring them into the group. Finally, I’m involved with the commercial sales development – working with the sales team on targeting client sector development and making sure that we’re growing in the areas that we want to grow as a business.

Why did KST decide to integrate more fire safety into the business?

It’s something that we’ve grown mainly over the last five years. We had a small fire capability, like many others we were focused on security and dabbling in fire. Back in 2020 we acquired a business called Silver Group. Silver Group expanded our capabilities into the fire and life safety area, particularly around smoke ventilation. Then two months ago we made a further acquisition in the delivery of fire with a business called EFire. We also acquired a fire risk assessment business 18 months ago.

How did these acquisitions come about?

The acquisition around Silver Group was about strengthening our fire capabilities. We wanted to be one of the first and only ones in the market to be able to offer combined smoke, ventilation, fire alarms and systems, and maintenance and installation services. There are only a few companies at the moment that cover both smoke and fire. Silver Group was a natural acquisition as we had been working with the company for a number of years as a subcontract partner, so we decided to bring them in house.

For fire risk assessment, we saw substantial opportunities within the marketplace. We had opportunities among our existing clients who needed to carry out risk assessments. So we came across the Quidvis business and we saw that as a real differentiator, so we brought that into the group. Then recently we acquired EFire to further strengthen our national capabilities on fire, but equally to help move us into some sectors which are new to the business like healthcare, NHS and the government.

What is the plan for KST moving forward within the fire and life safety sector?

It’s a major area of investment for us. We’re going to continue to develop in that area and grow our portfolio. We are creating a number of strategic partnerships with companies in areas of services that we don’t currently deliver.

I see the opportunities around integrating passive and active fire protection very much in a more unified way. At the moment, passive and active are almost treated as two different disciplines. We’re just about to complete a strategic partnership with a business that will allow us to support our clients in the provision of fire doors, fire shutters and fast stopping.

If you just look at the fire doors market, it’s never really been considered, but in this post-Grenfell world people are now having to deal with that. We see the opportunity to be able to provide our clients that solution off the back of our core services.

There is also continued growth potential in terms of technology. We will continue to work with our manufacturer and supplier partners to look at how we can bring technology to the play to improve our service delivery. For instance, we’re working heavily with Honeywell Gent at the moment. We are a Gent partner and are looking at their automation systems. We plan to put them into places so that when we send engineers out, we’re proactively maintaining systems rather than reactively maintaining systems.

Smoke ventilation wise, a lot of companies installed smoke ventilation but never have them maintained. We see massive opportunities of growth in the maintenance of smoke vents, both natural and mechanical, in the future.

IFSJ Exclusive: Gas safety made simple

IFSJ looks at the EasyAssist Emergency Control Valves from Oxford Gas Products that are helping prevent the spread of fire

Oxford Gas Products was formed with one mission in mind: to make gas safety simple for everyone. It is focused on developing innovative and inclusive safety solutions for the gas industry. The company was created in order to establish a dedicated company that would focus on finding new solutions for the gas and other utility industries.

The company’s first product, the EasyAssist, enables domestic gas Emergency Control Valves (ECVs) to be turned off at the push of a button, and it has the critical safety feature that in the event of a fire it will automatically close the ECV when the temperature in a house reaches 93 degrees Celsius.

When a resident smells gas, they can call the emergency gas helpline, and if safe to do so they will be asked to turn off the gas at the ECV. This is for the safety of the customer, gas engineers and emergency responders. In an emergency, turning off the gas supply can be a critical factor in making a situation safe.

Ofgem identified this as a problem for many vulnerable customers suffering from conditions such as osteoarthritis and strokes who may not have the physical dexterity needed to disconnect the gas. Drilling down into the data highlighted the severity of the problem – in 69% of PSR customer reported gas escapes where the customer was unable to turn the gas off.

Approximately 4.4 million people in the UK have evidence of moderate to severe osteoarthritis in their hands and 1.2 million stroke survivors live in the UK, with 100,000 new survivors added year on year.

New regulations for Multiple Occupancy Buildings (MOBs) following the Grenfell disaster mean that dwellings in MOBs must have a thermal cut-off (TCO) mechanism, and the EasyAssist product provides a solution for that. The EasyAssist can be quickly and simply fitted to the ECV in a matter of minutes by a qualified gas engineer thereby saving companies money when fitting TCO’s in MOBs.

Rollout plans

The Priority Services Register (PSR) is a free and voluntary system that gas distribution networks use to ensure the correct support is given to its most vulnerable customers. It is a system designed and overseen by Ofgem to better ensure that individuals with special requirements have access to additional support from their energy supplier as and when they require it.

Cadent, a partner of Oxford Gas Products, plans to install EasyAssists across its four networks from June 2023. Oxford Gas Products are also talking to the other gas distribution networks such as Scottish Gas, Northern Gas Networks and Wales & West Utilities, about installing EasyAssist on these networks too.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Robert Pocknell, Commercial Director at Oxford Gas Products to find out more about the company and its EasyAssist solution.

How did you come to set up Oxford Gas Products?

I was a founder in a design company called Oxford Product Design that responded to the call for innovation from the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC). We realised that gas and utilities was an areas which we wanted to target, so we created a new company, Oxford Gas Products in 2021. Its focus is primarily on gas, but it is going to develop more in the utility space generally.

I don’t come from either a fire or a gas background, but I’ve been working on this for the last four years so I’ve built up a modicum of knowledge. That is, I think, also true of Oxford product design – we’re in so many different industries and areas, and it’s just this one has really excited us because innovation goes very slowly in the utilities space. We feel like we are running like hares trying to get everyone moving more quickly, but the industry does go quite slowly. We are very excited to be an innovative company in an industry that takes time to change because we think we can bring faster innovation to the market.

How did the EasyAssist solution come about?

 The EIC is an organisation which was set up looking to try and coordinate more innovation for the energy networks. Cadent, which is an EIC partner and is now our company partner, were looking at how they could create something for the benefit of those on the Priority Services Register (PSR). They issued a call for innovation to our sister company, Oxford Product Design and we responded with this.

The product originally came out looking at vulnerability. They were looking for a solution for elderly and infirm and those with difficulties in turning off the emergency control valve. We pitched and won the call for innovation. The project was funded by Cadent.

Whilst we were designing it, we thought it would be great if it had fire prevention thermal cut-off. The new regulations have come in mandating thermal cut-off, so this is a solution for that. We’re trying to evangelise the fire safety and prevention aspects.

We had a very collaborative approach with EIC and we enjoyed working with them. We also enjoyed working with Cadent who are, as the biggest gas distribution network, really keen to try and find solutions and to make use of the PSR. One of the problems is that the PSR exists but we are not making use of it enough.

What are your plans going forward?

In the future we are planning to coordinate more with the fire service and gas industry – I’m actually meeting with Northern Gas and a fire service in the area next week. There’s quite a lot of discussion going on about how the industry can try and input more data from the fire service, emergency responders and the PSR. There is a lot of data available but nobody is corralling it.

I was at the Utilities show where there was talk about how when the fire service inspect people’s houses, there are opportunities there because the fire services is such a trusted organisation. If the fire service are looking to put in a fire or smoke monitor, or carbon monoxide alarm, solutions such as the EasyAssist should be part of the same process as, for example, knowing where to switch your water off and knowing where to switch your gas off.

Raising awareness of these gas issues is something that we’re quite excited to be involved in, looking at how there can be more coordination and gathering of data to provide a much more holistic service.

There’s obviously privacy concerns around data, but there are some really big projects out there looking to utilise it. Google were quite prominent at the Utilities Show with Google Cloud. They have some ideas utilising big data solutions which could get us in strong position for future innovation. We have thermal cut-off, but in the future you could also have, for example, cut off in the event of different types of gases. There is a lot more innovation to come in this space to create a safer environment.

We originally anticipated that our solution would be rolled out only by the gas distribution networks to domestics. Then the Multiple Occupancy Buildings (MOBs) rules came along which say that Emergency Control Valves (ECV) can be installed in a MOB by qualified gas engineer – you don’t actually need to have it. In a domestic building the gas metre and the ECV is owned by the gas distribution network, so nobody is allowed to touch it apart from turning on and off.

We are excited to have created and brought to market a product that both helps customers with vulnerabilities, and provides a critical fire safety solution to help prevent the spread of fire. The EasyAssist is one of many solutions we are working on to support customers in vulnerable situations and to improve the safety of utility engineers and emergency responders.

We are family

The fire industry comprises more than just firefighters and those who supply the equipment and services required for them to undertake their role, writes IFSJ Managing Editor Duncan J. White.

It is far wider and more diverse and includes everyone with a role in providing some form of service to maintain and enhance life safety. With this in mind I would like to introduce you to the concept that we are in fact all part of a wider ‘Fire Family.’ 

The industry requires robust health and wellbeing support due to several factors that affect our physical and mental health. These factors include the physiological demands of the job, psychological stress, shift work and sleep deprivation, exposure to hazardous materials, emotional toll and critical incident response, and long-term health risks. Although mainly focussed on frontline operational personnel, anyone in the Fire Family can experience these issues throughout their lives and should therefore have access to a network designed to support them in their hour of need.

A health and wellbeing network holds significant importance for the Fire Family, particularly in environments where individuals face unique challenges and stressors. Such networks could provide;

Support and Resources: A support system where individuals could access resources, services, and programs that promote their physical and mental health. It establishes a network of support that offers guidance, information, and assistance related to overall wellbeing. This network may involve healthcare professionals, counsellors, peer support groups, and wellness programs to form a comprehensive support system.

Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing: Addresses mental health concerns and promotes emotional wellbeing. It could offer avenues for individuals to seek help, guidance, and counselling for issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Prevention and Early Intervention: Plays a vital role in prevention and early intervention. It could provide education and resources that promote healthy lifestyle choices, stress management techniques, and strategies to prevent burnout and chronic health conditions. By emphasising proactive measures, the network could help individuals identify potential health risks early on, enabling timely intervention and reducing the likelihood of more severe health problems.

Awareness and Education: Raises awareness about various health-related topics, including physical fitness, nutrition, sleep hygiene, mental health, and work-life balance. It could offer educational programs, workshops, and campaigns that promote understanding and equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Peer Support and Connection: Fosters a sense of community and connection among individuals facing similar challenges. It could provide opportunities for peer support, allowing individuals to share experiences, seek advice, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their struggles. Peer support networks significantly contribute to building resilience, reducing isolation, and enhancing overall wellbeing.

Holistic Approach to Health: Recognises that health is not solely about physical wellbeing but encompasses mental, emotional, and social dimensions as well. It could promote a holistic approach to health, addressing various aspects of wellbeing to support individuals in achieving a balanced and fulfilling life.

Performance and Productivity: Acknowledges the impact of wellbeing on performance and productivity, whether in the workplace or other areas of life. By prioritizing health and wellbeing, individuals are more likely to experience higher job satisfaction, improved focus, increased resilience, and enhanced productivity. This, in turn, benefits organisations and communities.

Overall, a health and wellbeing network could create a supportive environment that prioritises physical and mental health, offers resources and services for prevention and intervention, fosters connection and peer support, and promotes a holistic approach to overall wellbeing. By investing in the health and wellbeing of individuals, organisations and communities can cultivate resilience, enhance productivity, and improve the overall quality of life.

Many countries, including the UK have such networks however, it is currently limited to firefighters and their immediate families and does not extend to the wider industry, the Fire Family. The cost of providing these networks is extremely expensive, however there could be an opportunity to explore if existing services can be extended to the wider Fire Family if private sector members and organisations willing to invest?

IFSJ Exclusive: The perfect fit with Performance Advantage Company

Greg Young, Senior Administrative Vice President at Performance Advantage Company looks at choosing the right tool mounting solution

Performance Advantage Company (PAC) was born from the fire industry, for the fire industry. 30 years later both our product line and the markets we serve have expanded greatly. We now serve customers outside the fire market including law-enforcement, military, utility and more. Our overall approach is to provide the most robust system so that tools are organised and secured on mobile platforms.

As a manufacturer in the United States, we serve our customers through a large and ever-growing network. Our customers include truck manufacturers, loose equipment distributors and resellers, truck refurbishment and service centers as well as original equipment manufacturers. Our products are in use in over 30 countries and demand around the world continues to grow for our robust tool mounting systems. 

Our core values drive us to make products that allow the fire industry to do their job efficiently and reliably. We believe our brackets achieve those goals by securing and organising tools. The current market conditions of long lead-times and shortages have caused many people to cut back on spending or make do with what they have. This will persist for many years, so the impetus is to keep all your equipment running longer. The same is true for loose equipment, rescue tools, etc. Our brackets keep those tools secured, safe, ready to use, and not to be misplaced. Our mission is to maintain and build our product line to meet the needs of the changing industry.

Choosing the right tool mount

There are several considerations, many of which might be considered the most important. Some of those factors could be a better response time, better accountability of tools, and less misplacing or lost tools. Another factor may be the replacement cost of the tools themselves. Rescue tools, LED lights and fans can be very expensive, and they must be secured to avoid a potential shortage of funds. Money spent on tool mounting saves investment dollars over the long term. That money can then be used for training or new tools that come on the market.

Another consideration when purchasing tool mounts for a truck may be the safety of the vehicle’s occupants. Often emergency and rescue vehicles are involved in crashes due to the speed or poor visibility, etc. Unsecured tools can be liberated from the vehicle, causing injury, or death. Tools in an occupied cab must be secured in a positive locking mount, not just a friction type mount. This will always provide safety and security, not just in case of a crash.

When purchasing tool mounting it is important to consider if that tool mounting system will be robust enough, or heavy duty enough, for the weight load that will be put into it. This can vary by a large magnitude due to the wide variety of tools used in the marketplace.

Other applications

You can commonly find hand tools wall mounted in garages or storage sheds or barns. But those static locations are not subject to the same dynamic loading that occurs in mobile applications like vehicles or trailers. When we talk about tool mounting systems, we are talking about robust and secure solutions for large heavy equipment in industrial situations. This can be on garbage trucks, police pursuit vehicles, fire and police boats, and more. And tool mounting may not even be vertical on a wall.

There are other times where heavy equipment needs to be mounted horizontally, fixed to a floor. Sometimes it must be mounted at an angle because either the tool dimensions exceed the space dimensions, or the angled installation allows a more ergonomically safe position for removing and replacing the tool into the mounted position.

New solutions

There are several new products that I’m excited about. I feel like there’s a lot of excitement to be had all around. We manufacture several different bases that locate the tips of rescue equipment like spreaders and cutters. We recently made a new rectangular pocket part number 1081 and there has been a lot of excitement around it from the market. It’s available by itself or it comes included in kits for different tools.

This pocket, and its simplicity and extreme durability, allow us to locate some rescue equipment that we were unable to previously. It’s caused excitement amongst our customers as they have recognised they can replace a part that they were fabricating their own part from aluminium or plastic. They see our part and recognise that a more efficient approach is to purchase from us a better and more durable product, saving them time and money.

PAC got started by recognising that manufactures of fire trucks for example, custom fabricate mounting brackets for each truck. It’s a much better idea to just take a part off the shelf, for a specific purpose, and finish that truck much sooner – than it is to stop work on the truck to fabricate a custom piece. We have had several customers drawn to this new product to tell us that it’s very similar to something that they make for another purpose.

These conversations have grown into more opportunities for us to provide other pockets that we don’t currently manufacture. This is great news that we love to hear because if one manufacturer tells us they need it – there is probably a greater need in the market to investigate. But this is the nature of the tool mounting business – new equipment, tools, and fire hazards for that matter, are coming into view all the time.

Remaining versatile

We do some of the development ourselves, however, we don’t completely rely on our own experience when looking for tool storage opportunities. We use a combination of actively looking at new products, monitoring the market trends and actively working with our customers to find the new trends that are outside our current offerings. While our employees have many years of combined experience PAC has over 550 dealers around the world, including 25 outside the United States. That constitutes a lot of customer-facing people, including salespeople, engineers, and service technicians.

Not only do we seek out new trends, through publications or through trade shows, our customer network trusts us for new solutions that their customers are looking for and we surely welcome those challenges. Internally we pass all this information along to our engineering and purchasing teams. They develop the concepts that meet these challenges, but only when the product meets our strict values. This is how we remain versatile and adapt to new tool innovations.

Also, I would like to repeat that we are actively looking for international customers looking for an experienced vendor of highest quality tool mounting solutions. 

Complex challenges

We continue to receive client requests. Of course we welcome all opportunities to solve problems for our customers. One recent example of a noteworthy new client is a manufacturer of specialty law enforcement tools. They make breaching tools, tear gas guns, and tear gas delivery systems. The delivery systems are vehicle mounted, at the scene, but need to be stored and secured until needed. They are a manufacturer that makes incredible products and wants to sell the product with the perfect mount so they came to us for help.

The complexity in mounting their tools is the difference in diameter when comparing the handle to the working end of the tool. This offset presents challenges when trying to hold something 4” or more away from a surface. This added complexity concerning offsets was outside the experience of the tool manufacturer. In order to provide vehicle mounts with their very unique tools and equipment, they recognised they needed to come to PAC for help.

The future of tool mounting

Having already served the company for 11 years, I’ve come to better understand our strengths as well as our shortcomings. In my new position as Senior Administrative Vice President, I will be looking at all the areas of the business, ensuring we maintain positive growth. I will be working to make sure that we educate the market about how PAC excels in the tool mounting industry. I also can address our shortcomings in new ways.

Every organisation has opportunities to improve and innovate their processes. Our company is no different. For me this means that I will become involved in more areas that I had not previously. Examples of this include coordinating and overseeing an entirely new accounting and customer management system, digging deeper into financials and budgets, looking towards the future and our aligning our goals.

It also means leading and building our team to meet those goals. This means a stronger team with more responsibilities driven by clear goals and direction. With a stronger team structure, we will cast a wider net and accomplish more. For example, product development or vendor development – It’s done by our engineering and purchasing team now instead of just our engineer, for example. Other parallels to this example, of growing our teams, are found in our core areas like marketing, sales and customer service.

While I always like to keep my ideas close to the vest, there are so many things that excite me about the future. The first of which is to continue building and strengthening our fantastic team. Also, PAC will soon publish a catalogue for the marine market because PAC products are already on boats for fire, rescue, and law enforcement. There is a whole new category of tools for administering fire suppression in the EV (electric vehicle) segment. This may require new tool mounts make that we don’t offer. So that more people experience the benefits of our mounting systems PAC will continue to seek new international dealers and manufacturers.

I will also be looking at ways to allow us to communicate efficiently amongst this growing pool of customers. And finally, as we continue to experience growth, there must be a review of our emergency plans. It is so important that we be prepared and ready to handle the next pandemic, flood, or fire for example, so we can continue to provide our assistance to the life saving market that is fire and emergency.

IFSJ Exclusive: New kid on the block

The story of Ryan Fogelman and Fire Rover: the solution that is revolutionising firefighting in the waste and recycling industry and beyond. By Duncan J. White

Ryan Fogelman is a man with a distinctive expertise in guiding inventors through the process of bringing their products to market. Despite not having a background in the fire industry, he has successfully collaborated with inventors to launch an array of safety products and consumer goods, including the Stick Grip, which has achieved extraordinary popularity, amassing approximately a billion views on the TikTok platform and COhatch, community-oriented coworking spaces that helps entrepreneurs bring their inventions to market.

Fogelman’s educational background includes a law degree and an MBA, which, coupled with his extensive focus on data analysis, reflects his dedication to rigorous analysis and strategic decision-making. While he possesses a wealth of knowledge in these areas, Fogelman primarily identifies as a business development professional.

It was through this professional network that Fogelman was approached in 2015 by a childhood friend, Brad Gladstone, who sought his assistance with their innovation known as Fire Rover, a remotely operated fire detection and suppression solution. Intrigued by the opportunity to work on ground-breaking technology, he joined the endeavour as part of Fire Rover’s first official employee.

Understanding the problem

Upon visiting his first trade show to present the product to the market, Fogelman was confronted by an issue: there was no solid information around the problem Fire Rover was looking to solve and so was unable to answer the customer’s fundamental question ‘why should I buy it?’.

Fires at waste and recycling centres were common, and their prevalence was something that he had researched extensively, but at that time there was no benchmark for the scale of the issue.

Seeking to understand the problem and identify the necessary solutions, Fogelman reached out to various industry professionals, but none of them had concrete data or knowledge about the prevalence of these fires. The industry was operating in a closed loop, with opinions and information kept in-house.

Driven by his curiosity, Fogelman decided to take matters into his own hands. Utilising his experience with Google Alerts, he started tracking fire incidents and began reporting the data. Gradually, he collected benchmark data and continued to monitor and analyse the information.

“I became an expert on waste and recycling facility fires and early detection solutions,” says Fogelman. “When you’re starting a company, you need to be an expert if you plan on being taken seriously in the market.” Additionally, Fogelman began to create a group of fire experts focused on problems in other occupancies to bring a new understanding to the growing threat of fires.

The scale of the problem

Traditional hazards combined with the onslaught of batteries in waste and recycling streams, worsening heat and dryness across the globe, and many other factors continue to make operating waste and recycling facilities more dangerous. As the world seeks to become more environmentally conscious, more stress is being placed on the waste industry’s infrastructure through increased recycling. The resulting rise in fires partially results from the increased sorting steps required in waste diversion, which whilst this may be classed as a good problem is one which can have dangerous consequences. In 2022, the waste and recycling industry experienced two fatalities and 56 direct and indirect injuries due to fire incidents. Uncontrolled waste fires also emit chemicals, such as acid vapours, dioxins, carbon monoxide, and heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and chromium, among many other toxic substances. The more proximate to uncontrolled waste burning, the higher the risk of exposure to these hazards and pollutants. “Through my years of analysing the waste and recycling industry, I now strongly believe that waste and recycling facility operators are the unintended victims of combustible materials, such as lithium-ion batteries, placed by the public in the waste streams,” says Fogelman. “It is only fair that some of the costs of these fire hazards, which, in my estimation, cost more than $1.2 billion dollars in the US and Canada, should be borne by the manufacturers of the batteries as opposed to the operators, insurance companies, and municipal fire departments.”

The solution

Fire Rover is a fully patented remotely operated fire detection and suppression solution that works 24/7/365 to protect facilities worldwide by detecting and extinguishing fires during their earliest stages. Fire Rover achieves early detection of fire incidents using military-grade thermal detection equipment, smoke analytics, optical flame detectors, and high-definition video to facilitate final verification by human agents and targeted fire suppression using onsite, PFAS-free firefighting agents.

Equipped with military grade thermal cameras paired with listed optical flame detectors and smoke detectors to satisfy code compliance, the Fire Rover detects early heat abnormality sometimes before visible smoke or flames are present.

Once a heat abnormality is detected, alarms received from the detectors are transmitted to a UL central station. A Fire Rover agent verifies if it is a false positive or a threat and action must be taken.

If action must be taken, the Fire Rover agent alerts the facility, the fire department, and authorities and then shoots an environmentally friendly cooling agent from the Fire Rover’s nozzles onto the hotspot to eliminate a fire before or after it starts. This allows ample time for the facility operator and fire professionals to respond appropriately to the hazard level.

The Fire Rover is capable of superior suppression, partially due to the elevated water density a monitor delivers compared to the design densities of a typical sprinkler system and partially due to the targeted suppression from controlling the monitor from the central station.

By detecting early when the fire is small, targeting the fire, and putting large amounts of water in this initial growth stage, the total water usage is significantly reduced.

“We focus on those initial 10 minutes between a breakdown in prevention and the fire professionals arrival on the scene. We are always trying to set the tripwire as early in the process as possible,” says Fogelman. “We’ve developed what we call the pre-incipient stage, which is basically when I catch a fire before there’s a flame just based on a heat abnormality. We look at it, we verify it, and we activate Fire Rover to safely deal with the situation.”

Reducing the risk

Fogelman spent his first few years in the market trying to understand the problem and being cautious about saying that the patented product is the solution to the problem: “Sometimes you need to call a spade a spade. I am now 100% confident that our solution is the only solution on the market today that can lower the risk profile of a good operator to levels seen before the lithium-ion hazards hit our industry.”

In 2022, Fire Rover successfully responded to 2,880 incidents and dispatched fire professionals 146 times, while remotely responding to active fire incidents with our targeted suppression solution 137 times. The solution currently safeguards nine of the country’s top 10 waste and recycling companies and family-owned operations, municipalities, and corporations in the US, Canada, the UK, France, and Australia. It has successfully fought against any major incident with minimal damage to the clients’ facilities.

“To prevent and eliminate fire incidents, you must invest in solutions that work for your facility type,” says Fogelman. “This means that traditional fire suppression methods such as water sprinkler systems and smoke alarms may not be the best option to stop a fire at a facility where there is a lot of activity, high ceilings and open doors to the elements, such as an MRF, scrap metal facility, transfer station, or waste-to-energy facility. The Fire Rover is the only real protection to outdoor storage or operations as well.”

The future of Fire Rover

Fire Rover has been working on FM certification since its inception, but now believes it is less than a year away. In recent years, Fogelman says the company has been looking at other occupancies where the system could be effective such as refineries, construction sites, demolition sites, historical structures, airplane hangars, and garages, specifically housing lithium-powered electronic vehicles. “Since the changes in 409, we believe that for hanger protection, there is no better solution, as we have never had a false alarm or a false deluge,” he says.

Fogelman’s message to the industry is this: “There is a system out there that will catch fires early. If you catch fires early you have less damage, less fire water, and less environmental effects. You have all these issues that are alleviated. But the reality is that just like anything else we need the support. We need the NFPA, we need the market to get behind our solution and results because as we all know, the industry typically works slowly when it comes to adopting and approving new technology.

“We have a proven technology. This isn’t a new technology, it’s proven technology that we have installed and protecting over 400 sites across the globe. The question is how do we get everybody on board with it now that we have proven it, and determining what industries can it work for outside of waste recycling.

“The major hurdle is that even though there is a different, better way to put out fire, people are going back to the same old method: water, water, water. Fire water is harmful to people, the environment, and property, and all the different pieces that go with it. Fire Rover negates that. We have had less than 30 incidents since 2015 where we needed the fire department to come on scene and add additional power to put a fire out successfully.”

 When it first started out Fire Rover, potential customers would question the amount of water Fire Rover had in its tanks. The team at Fire Rover has since determined that, most of the time, 1,000 gallons (3,785 L) are more than enough to deal with the hazards faced especially when the fires are caught so early. It has since added a continuous flow option, where the Fire Rover solution connects directly to the water supply and can be used as a primary solution versus a supplemental solution. This approach has allowed Fire Rover to cover more significant hazards across various occupancies.

Fogelman adds: “When we commit to working with a customer, we enter a long-term partnership to protect them from the danger of fire incidents inherent in their operations. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the frontlines, detecting, reacting, and fighting fire hazards together.

What is your role and position at Bullard?

I am the Regional Sales Manager responsible for Emergency Responder products in Europe and my primary focus is to expand Bullard’s presence in this market. I work closely with our product managers to identify areas of improvement and new product development opportunities. I also have experience as a volunteer firefighter in Germany which provides me with valuable insights into the needs and challenges faced by firefighters, particularly in the use of thermal imagers.

Sean Stinson, newly appointed president at Blackline Safety tells all about his new role and future plans at the company

In March of this year, Blackline Safety announced key promotions and changes to its executive leadership team, including Sean Stinson’s promotion to the additional role of President. With this appointment, Stinson assumed the leadership of software and professional service offerings, including Blackline Vision custom analytics. He also continues to lead all revenue generating activities, including sales, customer success and channel management.

Stinson joined Blackline in 2013 and has held progressively senior roles at the Company, including sales, product, data services, user experience, client success and customer care. Prior to Blackline, Stinson held leadership roles in engineering and project management at BW Technologies and Honeywell. IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Stinson’ to discuss his background, his thoughts on the industry, and his vision for Blackline’s future.

How did you become involved in the fire and safety industry?

A big part of what gives me my passion for the job and led to my early understanding of what customers need to do to keep people safe, is that I worked in the oil industry in Alberta early on, performing a variety of general labour jobs to help pay my way through university.

As a junior-level employee, I was often crawling inside petrochemical plants to do maintenance during a turnaround and I relied on portable gas protectors for my own personal safety. When I graduated as an electrical engineer, it was a natural progression to end up on the manufacturing side of the safety business and I’ve been here for more than two decades now.

Early in my career I held engineering and project management roles at BW Technologies and Honeywell, where I used my lived experience to create products that resonated with users. My deep understanding of customer needs allowed me to move quickly into leadership roles where I applied my knowledge to make better design decisions.

When Blackline embarked on our product strategy to build the G7 EXO area monitor, it was my responsibility to make sure we had the proper specifications in place to provide the best possible user experience.

What prompted your appointment as President?

Largely, the leadership changes are related to growth. Our company is almost 500 employees now and we’re selling products around the world. Six years ago, most of our revenue was generated in Canada whereas now we are the undisputed global leader in wearable connected safety devices for the industrial market. That growth necessitated the creation of new roles, including the role of President, to assist our CEO Cody Slater as we execute on strategy and allow him to retain a clear focus on direction and other C-level decisions. Cody and I have known each other and worked well together for a long time now and between us, we provide really good coverage of the skills required for strong leadership.

What does your new role entail and how does it fit with your role as Chief Growth Officer?

I still have the Chief Growth Officer responsibilities of sales, revenue generation and customer care. In addition to that, I’m assuming leadership of our software and professional service offerings, which brings me back to my engineering roots in some ways.

The title of President reflects my natural tendency to focus on strategy and business operations. I believe that leadership is really about empowering people to rise to their full potential, and now I’m in a position to make moves that allow employees to contribute more to our business at an individual level.

We have a fantastic team here and a big part of what I do now, and have done in the past as well, is pull people together to ensure we maintain our strong corporate culture. As President, I can step beyond my own team to fight the silos that often creep in when a company grows, and ensure we continue to build a productive, energised and inclusive culture here at Blackline.

What has Blackline been working on recently?

One of our most recent developments for the fire and safety market is the enhanced G7 EXO area monitor which now has plume modelling capabilities. We built this product with fire safety in mind, knowing that any time there is a release of harmful chemicals, it’s of utmost importance for the tactical teams on the ground to have accurate information about what’s happening now and what’s about to happen next.

Our newest technology was designed with input from Business Development Specialist Doug Mayer who works directly with our customers in the fire and safety space. We’ve incorporated their feedback about the most pressing challenges they face to design a product that offers a very fast deployment – it’s up and running in 60 seconds whereas competing monitors can take hours to set up – and automatically connects directly to the cloud to steam critical insights during an emergency.

What are Blackline’s plans for the near future? Is there anything specific you’re working towards?

Broadly, we’ll be continuing to expand and enhance our EXO product line. For the fire and safety market in particular, we’ll be adding more interchangeable cartridges to our area monitor so that responders will have the ability to sense more than five gases at a time. We understand that every second counts when they’re facing an unexpected gas release. Our goal is to provide a wide range of swappable cartridges, so that no matter what they’re faced with when they arrive, they’ll have a kit that that can keep them safe.

Derek Box, Marketing Manager at Nightstick, looks at intrinsically safe vs explosion-proof lighting for hazmat response teams

When it comes to lighting in hazardous environment emergencies, there are two established industry designations used by professionals: Intrinsically Safe (IS) and Explosion-Proof (XP). While both types of lighting provide protection against potential explosions, there are distinct advantages to using IS lighting over XP lighting that need to be understood when it pertains to effective emergency response.

First, it is vital to understand the critical differences between the two protection methods. By design, XP lighting is constructed to contain a potential explosion within the XP enclosure (housing), preventing an explosion from spreading to the surrounding area. XP lighting is traditionally built using large metal enclosures made from heavy materials such as stainless steel or other alloys.

Due to the power required, XP lighting is often directly connected utilising a continuous power source through specialised cables and connectors. These cable connections present severe limitations in portability and physical range of operation due to the size of the hazardous area, which may be unknown or rapidly changing due to weather or other conditions. It’s impractical to expect a hazmat team to carry hundreds of feet or, in some situations, even miles of XP cables and remain nimble.

IS lighting, on the other hand, is purpose-built and designed specifically to prevent an explosion from occurring in the first place. This is why the word “intrinsic” is used. IS lighting products are deliberately created to restrict electrical energy to a level below the ignition point of all but the most exotic hazardous materials. This, therefore, eliminates any potential spark or ignition source from the equation. IS lighting is constructed from lightweight, non-conductive engineered polymers with anti-static electricity additives and powered by alkaline or rechargeable LiPo or Li-Ion batteries for peak performance.

A key advantage of IS lighting is that it is far less bulky and more compact than XP lighting. The large XP enclosures, heavy fixtures, and cables can be extremely difficult to set up quickly in an emergency situation. IS lighting, on the other hand, using primarily modern LED technology, is small and lightweight, and can be deployed almost instantly and ready to use in response to a hazardous environment emergency.

Additionally, IS lighting is more flexible than XP lighting. Since it is portable and more compact, it can be used in a wider variety of conditions and locations. It can also be used in more locations where XP lighting may not be practical, such as in confined spaces, large areas, or places with limited or no ventilation. Agility on the scene is what intrinsically safe lighting is designed to deliver.

Firefighters vs. Hazmat Response Teams

Firefighters and hazmat (hazardous materials) response teams are critical emergency response teams that help protect the public from danger. While both teams may respond to similar emergencies, they have distinct differences in terms of their roles, responsibilities, and training. Let’s explore the differences between a professional Firefighter and a Hazmat Responder.

Professional firefighters are almost always the first responders for emergencies such as structure fires, car accidents, medical emergencies, and more. They are responsible for the on-site rescue, providing immediate medical care, and putting out fires. Emergency response work is potentially dangerous in unpredictable environments. This is why preventable variables must not be introduced when the primary goal is to save lives and protect property.

Hazmat Response Teams, on the other hand, specialise in responding to incidents that involve hazardous liquids, gases, or solids. These incidents can be limited to a specific location or cover large areas. Hazmat teams are often called in before a fire or explosion occurs to investigate suspicious spills and leaks at facilities that are known to contain dangerous, explosive, or poisonous chemicals. These locations can be in built-up urban areas or remote locations like a train derailment with unknown cargo, further complicating response time without having the right equipment ready.

A critical difference between Firefighters and Hazmat Response Teams is their training. Professional firefighters receive a broad range of training that covers many different emergency situations. They must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and make split-second decisions and are trained to use a variety of tools and equipment, such as hoses, axes, and ladders, to fight fires and rescue people. This is why firefighters receive elemental training in identifying possible hazmat conditions and how to respond until specialised hazmat teams arrive on scene.

Hazmat response teams, in sharp contrast, receive specialised training in dealing with hazardous materials. This includes extensive in-depth training in the identification of hazardous substances, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and specialised tools and equipment to contain and control spills. Hazmat responders also undergo rigorous training in the decontamination of personal property and equipment, as well as the handling, storage, maintenance, and safe disposal of hazardous materials.

Another key difference between traditional firefighters and hazmat response teams is their equipment. Firefighters use conventional equipment to save lives and protect property. They also utilise personal protective equipment, such as a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) fire-resistant helmets, boots, and turnout gear, to protect themselves from heat and flames. 

Hazmat Response Teams use specialised equipment to handle hazardous materials. This can include sealed protective clothing, respiratory protection, chemical-resistant suits, and specialised tools for sampling and analysis. Hazmat teams may also use containment and control equipment, such as booms, barriers, and absorbents, to prevent the spread of hazardous materials.

Finally, traditional firefighters and hazmat response teams have different roles and responsibilities. Traditional firefighters are responsible for responding to a wide range of emergencies, including fires, car accidents, and medical emergencies. They work closely with other emergency responders, such as police officers and paramedics, to provide a coordinated response to emergencies.

Hazmat response teams, however, are responsible for responding specifically to incidents involving hazardous materials. They work closely with other emergency responders, such as firefighters and police officers, to provide a coordinated response to hazardous materials incidents. They may also work with other agencies and other organisations to ensure that dangerous materials are correctly disposed of, and the incident site is clean.

Lighting for Firefighters vs. Hazmat Response Teams

When it comes to emergency situations, lighting is a crucial factor that plays a significant role in ensuring the safety of responders and the public. In particular, firefighting and hazmat response teams require specialised lighting equipment to address their unique needs. Let’s explore the key differences between firefight and hazmat response team lighting equipment.

Firefighting lighting equipment is designed to provide illumination in the smoky, low-visibility conditions that are common in firefighting operations. The primary purpose of firefighting lighting equipment is to assist firefighters in locating victims, identifying hazards, and navigating through hazardous environments.

The most common types of firefighting lighting equipment are:

  • Bunker gear angle lights.
  • Helmet-mounted lights.
  • Area lights.
  • Tripod-mounted lights to illuminate larger areas.

One of the critical differences between firefighting lighting equipment and hazmat response team lighting equipment is the safety certification rating. The need for a hazardous environment safety rating is less important in a situation where a fire is already present, and the primary goal of a firefighter is to isolate and extinguish a fire. Additionally, firefighting lights are designed to be waterproof and resistant to extreme temperatures to ensure they can withstand the heat of a fire.

Hazmat response teams are responsible for responding to incidents involving hazardous materials such as chemicals, gases, and other dangerous materials. Hazmat response team lighting equipment is specifically designed with the highest levels of safety certification. These teams often arrive to investigate a suspected leak or other unusual circumstances. Ensuring they do not cause a fire or explosion is a critical part of their work. 

One of the primary differences between hazmat response team lighting equipment and firefighting lighting equipment is the safety certification level. Hazmat response teams require IS lighting to prevent the ignition of flammable gases and vapors that may be present in the environment. These specialised lights are water, gas, and dustproof and are designed to prevent sparks and heat from igniting hazardous materials.

Hazmat response team lighting equipment also tends to have a somewhat lower brightness level than firefighting lighting equipment because of the requirements to certify the lights, as IS requires lower power and temperature levels.

Traditional firefighters and Hazmat response teams are both critical emergency response teams that play essential roles in protecting the public from danger. While they may respond to similar emergencies, they have distinct differences in terms of their roles, responsibilities, and training. Traditional firefighters are responsible for responding to a wide range of emergencies. At the same time, Hazmat response teams specialise in responding to incidents involving hazardous materials and explosive atmospheres. Understanding these differences is vital for anyone who may need to call on these emergency responders in the event of an emergency.

The quality of IS equipment is vital in potentially explosive environments. One must ensure their lighting is manufactured by a reputable company with documented experience in creating IS products. Take a look at what’s in store at the NFPA Conference which returns to Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas in June

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is set to host its annual Conference & Expo on June 19-21, 2023 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Thousands of professionals from the fire, electrical, and life safety industries will gather for the event to attend over 110 educational sessions, covering the latest issues, challenges, and trends in the field.

The expo, featuring more than 300 exhibitors, will showcase products and services necessary to meet and maintain compliance with prevailing codes and standards in the design, construction, and operation of buildings and facilities. Attendees can also expect a series of pavilions, presentations, and special events to address specific topic areas, including electrical safety, emerging technologies, and community risk reduction.

The NFPA Spotlight on Public Education (SOPE) will be held on June 19-20, covering a wide range of public education issues, such as fire prevention programs and approaches for multiple age groups, the value and impact of community partnerships, and CRR strategies that can help effectively impact communities as a whole.

The keynote speaker at the conference’s opening general session will be Dr. Albert Manero, a social entrepreneur, educator, humanitarian, engineer, and superhero to hundreds of “bionic kids” who have benefited from his mission to make 3-D printed bionic prosthetic limbs accessible to all. This session will take place from 8am to 9am.

Elsewhere, “Decoding PFAS in the Fire Service: What It Is and Why It Was Used” will be held from 9:15am to 10:15am and look at the basic understanding of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and their use in the fire service. Attendees will learn about North Carolina State University’s recent research on PFAS compounds present in firefighter gear, the dermal absorption of PFAS, and the biological impacts of PFAS and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PAH) compounds.

“Fireground Contaminant Exposure Control: National and Regional Approaches” is scheduled from 10:30am to 11:30am and will look at current national and regional approaches used by fire departments for their exposure control policies and the training health and safety personnel and leadership on these approaches.

Also on Monday, “Emergency Action Plans and the Role of the Fire and Life Safety Director” will take place from 10:30am to 12pm and provide attendees with an understanding of emergency action plans and their importance in protecting building occupants during emergencies.

Tuesday 20 June

A key presentation “Constructing the World Cup – Qatar Civil Defense leads with Fire and Life Safety,” kicks off Tuesday’s proceedings at 8am. It will focus on the preparations undertaken by Qatar for the FIFA World Cup 2022, including multi-billion-dollar infrastructure expansion, construction, and renovations to support the event. The Qatar CD, under the Ministry of Interior, will share their experience and highlight successes and challenges in fire and life safety, crowd management, and stadium and facilities protection for this unique experience.

“Fire and Life Safety Design in Airports: A Case Study” will be held from 9.15-10.15am. The presentation will cover the case study of the Hamad International Airport expansion, where a fire and life safety strategy design was implemented based on NFPA codes and standards.

The session; “Technological Advances in Exit Signage” will be presented from 2-3pm and will highlight the limitations of static exit sign messaging in buildings with complicated egress layouts. Attendees will learn about technological advances in sensors, controls, and artificial intelligence algorithms being designed for emergency lighting systems to be used for dynamic directional exit signs.

The presentation “Sustainability vs. Life Safety: The Debate of the Decade” is scheduled for 3.15-4.15pm where experts from the realms of fire and life safety and sustainability will debate which aspect is more important. Attendees will hear the discussion on the use of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon foam surfactants, the continued use of clean agent systems known for stratospheric ozone depletion, and the overabundance of water wasted by fire departments.

Also on Tuesday, “Fire Alarm Contractor Shortcuts and Mistakes: How to Avoid Common Code Violations” will take place from 4.30-6pm. The session will discuss the common code violations that fire alarm technicians regularly commit. Attendees will learn how to spot these violations early, and the discussion will cover topics from NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, and NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, with a focus on their application in the field.

Wednesday 21 June

On Wednesday, Lieutenant Joe Kovalsky’s presentation on “Mental Health Resources in the Fire Service: Tips, Advice, and More” is a much-needed discussion in the industry. It’s no secret that many firefighters and first responders battle mental health problems, but the stigma around seeking help is still a significant barrier. Attendees of this session will hear the personal journey of one firefighter who struggled with PTSD and sought treatment.

Another session on the agenda, presented by Weston Baker, AVP, Senior Engineering Technical Specialist at FM Global, is titled “How Roof Pitch and Ceiling Structures Affect Fires”. Attendees will learn about the impact that roof pitch and ceiling structural members have on the build-up of thermal layers under ceilings during a fire event.

“Solar and Energy Storage System Safety and Reliability”, presented by Bill Brooks, Principal at Brooks Engineering, is another essential topic for attendees. Attendees will learn about the current challenges that face the solar and storage industries as they play a more significant role in the supply of power across the world.

And finally, Ashley Rodrigue, Public Affairs Director at Lousiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, will present “Data-Driven Community Risk Reduction: Innovative Ideas and Action Steps”, a session which is designed to arm participants with ideas and action steps to drive strong Community Risk Reduction (CRR) initiatives. This session will connect the dots between CRR theory and practice, providing participants with the tools they need to implement effective CRR initiatives in their communities.
