ROCKWOOL announces new Birmingham fire-stopping hub

ROCKWOOL has announced the launch of a global centre of excellence for fire-stopping at Hams Hall, near Birmingham, according to the company.

The centre will manufacture a new range of fire-stopping products and offer hands-on training to support compliance with UK fire safety regulations.

ROCKWOOL stated that its fire-stopping range will include coated batt, sealants, collars, wraps, pillows and socket boxes, and is expected to launch in summer 2025.

The company explained that the facility will use in-house processes and equipment to manage products from concept through to delivery.

It added that the centre will also serve as a site for ongoing product development and technical innovation.

New products to be launched from the site

According to ROCKWOOL, the upcoming fire-stopping range builds on its existing Euroclass A1 non-combustible stone wool insulation portfolio.

The company said the centre would allow it to integrate manufacturing, product testing and quality control within a single UK-based site.

It added that the new range is designed to meet both performance and sustainability targets.

ROCKWOOL stated that the move forms part of a wider technical strategy intended to support new product development under changing UK building safety regulations.

The company confirmed that it will manage every stage of the new product line internally at the Birmingham site.

Training centre will support industry partners

ROCKWOOL said that a specialist training facility will open later this year at the Hams Hall location to support skills development within the construction industry.

According to the company, the centre will provide live demonstrations and guided installation sessions on fire-stopping, HVAC and fire protection products.

It explained that the facility will feature product rigs that mirror various typical building applications.

The company added that attendees will be able to count training hours as credits toward their CPD records.

ROCKWOOL also highlighted that the new site will complement its existing online learning platform, ROCKWOOL Learning.

According to the company, this digital platform offers modular self-learning, automated CPD tracking and certification for industry professionals.

Senior appointment to lead technical development

ROCKWOOL stated that Ben Peach has been appointed as Product and Technical Solutions Director at ROCKWOOL Ltd.

Peach has more than two decades of experience in the UK fire-stopping sector, the company noted.

He will be responsible for overseeing the new centre of excellence and leading technical strategy across ROCKWOOL’s product portfolio.

According to ROCKWOOL, the launch of the fire-stopping centre follows a recent land acquisition in Peddimore, located to the north east of Birmingham.

The company said it intends to develop a new UK stone wool insulation manufacturing site at the location.

Can you start by telling us about your role at Quelfire and how it connects with early-stage project design?

As Technical Client Relations Manager at Quelfire, my role sits within the technical team and focuses on direct engagement with clients and design teams.

My role involves direct interaction with customers and clients, assisting with daily technical queries and, more importantly, engaging early in project development.

Quelfire offers complimentary technical support to design teams at the project’s inception, helping them design buildings that incorporate available tested solutions.

This early engagement includes initial meetings with the design team to discuss processes, advise on the information we require and explain what we can provide in return.

Once we’ve identified specific details applicable to the project, I remain available for further meetings to address queries, advise on incorporating these details into the design and provide ongoing support.

What kinds of firestopping challenges do you see when you’re brought into projects early and how do these differ when engagement happens too late?

When we’re involved early, we generally don’t encounter significant challenges.

Even if specific information isn’t available at the outset, we can work with established principles that pave the way for identifying and applying tested details later.

There’s no stage that’s too early for our involvement.

Conversely, late engagement presents considerable challenges.

If the building design is finalised without considering firestopping of services, applying tested solutions becomes difficult.

For instance, if wall and floor constructions, ceiling heights and opening sizes are already determined with minimal opportunity for adjustment, it may be challenging or even impossible to apply a tested detail.

This situation forces the project team to either proceed without compliance or rework the design, both of which are avoidable with earlier consideration of firestopping.

Why do you think fire safety is still being pushed down the design timeline, despite the risks and regulations in place?

A major factor is the lack of priority given to detailed design at early stages.

For firestopping to be addressed properly, you need coordination across disciplines – MEP, structural, architectural – and that often isn’t built into the early project scope.

It’s not that people don’t care about fire safety.

It’s just that it hasn’t been budgeted for or included in the initial programme.

Clients often don’t allocate enough resources and time to the early design phase.

This lack of allocation means that MEP designers and architects can’t dedicate sufficient manpower and time to delve into the details and identify necessary elements.

To prevent fire safety from being sidelined, more resources need to be allocated to the early stages of design.

What does early engagement actually involve in practice and who needs to be part of that conversation from the start?

Early engagement involves designing the building around available tested solutions.

This means ensuring that all systems – substrates, MEP services and others – have corresponding test evidence.

Builders’ work openings, ceiling heights and similar elements must be appropriately sized and set out to allow for the application of tested solutions.

Equally important is ensuring that these designs are practical to implement on-site.

The conversation should include everyone in the design team: architects, MEP designers, structural designers and others.

Additionally, input from manufacturers of all involved systems is crucial – this includes firestopping product manufacturers like us, MEP service system manufacturers, wall or floor system manufacturers, damper manufacturers and more.

The BSR has said most Gateway 2 applications are still being rejected – what’s going wrong?

The BSR expects applicants to present their designs confidently, demonstrating understanding and providing clear justifications.

To improve submission quality, a detailed schedule of firestopping throughout the project is necessary.

This includes clarity on each firestop, the tested details applied and the supporting test evidence.

Designing buildings around tested solutions and clearly scheduling these specifics can significantly enhance the quality of firestopping design.

Providing demonstrable evidence for each proposed solution makes the submission more robust and less open to dispute.

Huntsman unveils polyurethane coating for passive fire protection in EVs

Huntsman has announced the launch of a new intumescent polyurethane coating system designed to enhance passive fire protection in electric vehicles.

According to Huntsman, the POLYRESYST EV5005 coating can be applied to both metal and composite substrates used in EV battery enclosures, helping to preserve structural integrity in the event of a fire or thermal incident.

The system was developed in response to increasing safety expectations from regulators and consumers in the EV sector, the company said.

Huntsman confirmed the new coating was showcased at The Battery Show Europe, which took place in Stuttgart in early June 2025, alongside other polyurethane systems it has developed for EV battery applications.

The company added that the new formulation does not restrict vehicle design or production processes and has been engineered for compatibility with automated spray application.

Product aims to improve fire performance and production speed

Huntsman stated that the POLYRESYST EV5005 polyurethane coating was created to help EV manufacturers meet fire safety standards while maintaining production efficiency.

The material is designed to be applied without minimum or maximum thickness limitations, enabling customisable fire protection coverage across battery enclosures.

It is fast curing, according to the company, with abrasion resistance and hydrolytic stability, and delivers a flexible but strong layer.

The system is also formulated for high-throughput automated production lines.

Huntsman said it adheres to a wide range of substrates and sets within seconds, eliminating the need for post-curing or ovens.

A short tack-free time allows multiple coats to be applied rapidly, helping speed up workflows and reduce bottlenecks.

System supports structural protection in thermal events

Huntsman highlighted that one of the main benefits of the POLYRESYST EV5005 system is its contribution to structural integrity in the event of a thermal runaway or mechanical impact.

The coating is intended for use within EV battery modules and packs, which are at heightened risk of ignition due to concentrated energy storage.

Irina Bolshakova, Global Automotive Marketing Director at Huntsman, said: “The use of technologies that can help delay or prevent thermal runaway is a hot topic in the automotive industry.

“Manufacturers are actively looking for materials that enable them to integrate additional fire resistance into battery enclosures and other interior components, without adding weight or complexity to the design and manufacture of vehicles.

“POLYRESYST EV5005 system has been developed with exactly those needs in mind and is part of a wider portfolio of products that we offer to help safeguard the structural integrity of EV batteries.”

Complementary solutions presented at trade event

Huntsman noted that its wider EV materials portfolio was also promoted at The Battery Show Europe.

This included SHOKLESS polyurethane foam systems, designed to protect battery modules and packs through thermal insulation and vibration damping.

The company said SHOKLESS materials are compatible with standard polyurethane processes and can be prefabricated.

Also exhibited were Huntsman’s VITROX WCM and RTM technologies, which support the production of thermally resistant lightweight upper battery covers.

According to Huntsman, the range is aimed at reducing weight while maintaining resistance to thermal propagation.

RIMLINE FC polyurethane systems were also presented.

These are designed for composite sandwich structures in EVs and can be used in underfloor elements, door inserts and other semi-structural parts.

Nine Golden Rules: Quelfire highlights common firestopping pitfalls and how to prevent them

Quelfire outlines the Nine Golden Rules for Early Engagement, explaining how early coordination across trades can secure tested firestopping and prevent costly installation problems

“Firestopping needs to be considered earlier.” If you work in the construction industry, you’ve likely heard this before.

And although it’s not a new message, we do understand that it may feel unhelpful, especially when you’re already trying to stay ahead of legislation and best practices.

Sometimes, it may seem more like another vague instruction than actionable support.

But there’s a reason it continues to be discussed.

Often, firestopping is considered far too late, usually when key decisions, such as ceiling heights, have already been made.

And while the construction industry is beginning to change, the race against time to rectify installations that do not align with test evidence occurs far more than it should.

This can lead to additional costs and project delays, and may even result in pushbacks from the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) at Gateway 2.

Gateway 2 was introduced as part of the Building Safety Act (BSA) for higher-risk buildings.

It requires contractors to submit a detailed design along with all fire safety information to the BSR.

Only projects with designs that meet building regulations will be approved for construction.

In April 2024, Tim Galloway, the Deputy Director of the BSR, announced that approximately 75% of applications for higher-risk buildings were still being rejected due to ‘missing or flawed’ information.

His explanation? A lack of industry design expertise, especially regarding fire and structural safety.

This highlights the need for earlier firestopping engagement when designing people’s homes, workplaces, and leisure spaces.

In this article, we focus on the Best Practice Guide’s 9 Golden Rules, exploring the importance of early engagement in firestopping and providing a roadmap for construction projects.

What are the 9 golden rules?

Firstly, let’s take a look at what the term ‘early engagement in firestopping’ means.

It simply refers to collaborating with other key stakeholders at the design stage, ensuring that each service penetration has an appropriate tested solution detailed.

However, a firestop is only as good as its design, installation, the material it’s installed into, and the services that run through it.

Dryliners, electricians, mechanical contractors, and wall manufacturers all influence the firestop’s effectiveness.

This is why collaboration is essential to confirm that all parties are on the same page and that tested solutions are implemented.

The guide published by the ASFP, BESA, BSRIA, FIS, & GPDA titled “Firestopping of Service Penetrations: Best Practices in Design and Installation” contains nine Golden Rules.

Seven of these relate to the building’s design, clearly highlighting where the emphasis needs to be.

Ultimately, an accurate design makes a compliant installation much easier to achieve.

Golden Rule 1: Engage early with the manufacturer & installers

Manufacturers are typically engaged during RIBA Stages 4 and 5; however, this can create challenges because service routes are established much earlier in the design process.

In these circumstances, applying a tested detail can be almost impossible without rework.

We strongly believe manufacturers should be involved earlier at RIBA Stages 2 and 3: Concept Design and Spatial Coordination.

When coordinating the MEP design across the building, the MEP designer will need support from the manufacturer.

This collaboration ensures that the services and builder’s work openings comply with the manufacturer’s fire test evidence.

In our experience, waiting until RIBA Stage 4 often results in project rework and late changes to MEP designs.

Additionally, early collaboration with specialist installers is highly beneficial, as they are qualified to advise on the practicality of the installation.

They know what will work in practice and not just on paper.

Golden Rule 2: Review the fire strategy documents in conjunction with M&E specs

The building’s fire strategy document should outline the preventative measures in place for a fire emergency and focus on the appropriate responses.

It should also include the location of compartment lines, required fire ratings, and escape routes, for instance.

This document is an emergency response plan, so all information must be accurate for design decisions and future fire safety management.

Golden Rules 3 & 4: Identify all service types and insulation – repeat for penetration seals & establish spacing requirements

In this industry, specific information is invaluable.

When it comes to firestopping, there are many required variables, from different types of walls and floors to services and fire ratings.

Only by having specific information about these variables can we provide the most appropriate firestopping solution for your application.

For example, slight adjustments to spacing or insulation material can change the choice of tested details; therefore, accurate information is non-negotiable when working to achieve building compliance.

Having this information in the early stages of a project helps solve any challenges that may arise.

It’s simply easier to change the design when it’s a draft on paper than when services are already installed.

Golden Rules 5 & 6: Select third-party certified & tested products from one manufacturer

A building must be designed and constructed around tested details.

This is the only way to guarantee the building will respond as intended in the event of a fire.

Therefore, third-party certified and tested products are necessary.

Third-party verification essentially removes manufacturer bias and thoroughly vets the products, giving peace of mind to those using and installing them.

A manufacturer can say their products will perform as intended, but how can anyone know for certain without this vital evidence?

Third-party certification and testing provide that level of transparency; it’s the only way to protect people and property.

Additionally, Golden Rule 6 highlights that only one manufacturer’s products should be used throughout the project, unless tested otherwise.

A manufacturer’s products are usually tested as a complete system.

Introducing products from another manufacturer can be risky, as their performance together in a fire is untested and, therefore, unpredictable.

Golden Rule 7: Request certification from manufacturers

Manufacturers should have all certification readily available.

A copy of this certification is a great way to prove that the products used on the project have been independently tested and verified to perform as indicated.

Golden Rule 7 also states that a qualified individual must review the certification to confirm the products are suitable for the specific application.

Further reassurance.

Golden Rule 8: Use an installer that is third-party accredited

Although it is not legally required for penetration seal products to be installed by third-party, accredited installers, this method helps ensure that installations are carried out by qualified and competent parties.

Through gained certification, it provides confidence that the company has been verified, is frequently audited, and qualified to carry out firestopping works in line with building regulations.

Golden Rule 9: Implement a structured inspection plan as work proceeds

When construction begins, it’s about sticking to the agreed plan.

A structured inspection plan makes sure that key project objectives are achieved to the correct standard.

This approach will contribute to the Golden Thread of Information – a digital record of the building’s lifecycle, from design and construction to ongoing maintenance.

One way to achieve this is through photographic evidence.

This provides visual documentation, showing that the construction is in line with the design, while also efficiently recording any changes made.

This approach places responsibility on those constructing the building to present evidence for their key decisions and meet building regulations.

It’s also a great way for installers to validate their work; there’s no need for concern if the design has been followed, as all the correct steps have been taken.

With tighter regulations and a need for transparency across construction projects, firestopping must be prioritised.

But this relies on the collaboration of the right people at the right time.

When done correctly, it can reduce costly rework and delays, guaranteeing the building will perform as intended.

It achieves the ultimate objective of keeping people safe.

It saves lives.

Fire doors training, regulation and competence discussed at UK ASFP TG10 meeting

UK fire doors task group discusses training, myths and compliance

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has reported that its Task Group 10 (TG10) met in May 2025 to discuss updates on fire doors, including training, regulation and industry collaboration.

The group’s fourth meeting addressed projects including a multi-volume Colour Book, a fire door podcast series, and upcoming guidance on nominal and notional fire doors.

According to the ASFP, attendees also examined training gaps and regulatory changes, especially those relating to the Building Safety Act and the Construction Products Reform Green Paper.

ASFP updates Colour Book and podcast plans

The ASFP stated that TG10 confirmed progress on Volume 1 of its Colour Book, which will address design, specification and planning.

The group decided to split the Colour Book into multiple volumes to better support competence frameworks. A draft of Volume 1 is expected by the end of July.

Attendees were asked to volunteer for editorial support and podcast contributions, with the TG10 podcast series seeking guest suggestions and topic input.

The association also said that a draft advisory note on nominal and notional fire doors is close to completion.

While TG10 does not endorse these terms, it noted the need to outline their risks and controls.

Shifting towards competence-led fire door safety

A central discussion, led by ASFP’s Kate Milford, addressed how the fire door sector is moving away from a compliance-based model towards a competence-focused approach.

The ASFP said this change was driven by post-Grenfell legislation including the Building Safety Act and supported by industry bodies such as the Industry Competence Committee and the Industry Competence Steering Group.

It also pointed to work by SLG12, chaired by ASFP’s David Marah, which seeks to unify fire protection knowledge across the sector.

TG10 acknowledged that installation and inspection training is well established, while areas like procurement and product selection remain underdeveloped.

Fire door training and the ASFP Competence Hub

TG10 discussed how competence is measured across fire door design, specification, procurement, installation and maintenance stages.

Members were encouraged to review internal competence records and use the ASFP Competence Hub as a resource.

The association said that feedback on training and pathways would be used to guide development of future resources.

Regulatory change and product testing discussed

The ASFP reported that TG10 reviewed proposals from the Construction Products Reform Green Paper, including the idea of digital product passports and stricter third-party certification.

The group also considered the regulatory treatment of internal versus external fire doors and the need for interpretable test data that protects proprietary information.

It was noted that oversight from the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is increasing in the fire door and ironmongery sectors.

Mayplas Thermafire A2 Soffit achieves A2 fire classification

New soffit product meets UK fire safety standard

Mayplas has announced that its recently launched Thermafire A2 Soffit has achieved an A2-s1,d0 Reaction to Fire classification under BS EN 13501-1.

The company stated that the slab, designed to provide both thermal and acoustic insulation, is suitable for use within the soffit at the party wall junction and other areas of construction.

According to Mayplas, the product was introduced in March 2025 and has now been confirmed to meet the A2 classification for limited combustibility.

Insulation performance supports UK building regulations

The company said the Thermafire A2 Soffit is available in various densities and in both 100mm and 150mm thicknesses.

It added that these options allow flexibility in meeting thermal performance requirements set out in Approved Document L.

Mayplas noted that the product is compatible with both masonry and timber frame constructions.

Acoustic properties and installation features

Mayplas reported that the product also addresses sound transmission in line with Approved Document E.

According to the company, standard 600mm x 600mm slabs can be cut on site to fit soffit voids.

It explained that the soffit can be secured to timber trusses or masonry blocks using the correct fixings, which Mayplas is able to supply.
