FIREFLY has reported that its Titan Lite 120:60 barrier system is being used in the second phase of refurbishment at Birmingham International Airport in the UK.

Installation is being carried out by KRASI Fire Protection, an approved FIREFLY installer working on behalf of main contractor Vinci.

The project involves forming fire-resistant compartments above corridor areas near the World Duty Free Zone, allowing older barriers to be dismantled and enabling building alterations to continue.

Titan Lite 120:60 used to provide roof void protection

According to FIREFLY, Titan Lite 120:60 is a three-layer barrier offering two hours of fire integrity and one hour of insulation.

The system is designed for concealed spaces such as roof voids and is manufactured from aluminium and layers of woven and non-woven glass fibre.

The manufacturer explained that this product has been widely used in industrial and sensitive environments including food processing sites and data centres.

Project team describes on-site installation approach

KRASI Fire Protection Project Manager Richard Dark said: “Our task throughout has been to install new fire barriers to permit the existing ones to be dismantled, and thereby enable the major alterations and renovation work that is taking place.”

He added: “The FIREFLY product range has been used here extensively in the past and the various details employed on the current work have been approved by the client and the airport’s own fire engineer.”

Dark explained: “The barriers are being formed using the Titan Lite with lengths of Unistrut to secure the top of the barrier due to the distance between purlins.”

Ancillary products used to complete the compartmentation system

The company stated that FB180 Batt is mechanically fixed through the Unistrut using FIREFLY Pigtail Screws to maintain the compartment line up to the roof.

It added that Penowrap is applied around purlin ends for insulation and Collaroll is used for service penetration protection.

Dark said: “Overall, the installation has progressed smoothly, and we are scheduled to return next month.”

Passive fire protection relies on the effective compartmentation of a building.

It is made up of fire doors, walls, and floors, and works alongside active systems such as sprinklers and fire alarms.

Elements of the compartmentation, like the service penetration seals, are hidden within the building’s makeup, often making them the ‘unsung heroes’ of building safety.

Their silent but crucial role in containing and slowing the spread of fire is often overlooked, but they’re a key factor in saving lives and limiting damage in the event of a fire.

But more on that later!

The implementation of fire compartmentation is crucial in high-rise buildings, which Approved Document B defines as those exceeding 18 metres in height or having more than seven storeys, with at least two residential units.

However, we believe that compartmentation should not be limited to high-rise buildings or those over 18 metres; each case should be reviewed individually.

Compartmentation has long been a requirement in Approved Document B, B3: Internal Fire Spread (Structure).

It states:

Where reasonably necessary to inhibit the spread of fire within the building, measures shall be taken, to an extent appropriate to the size and intended use of the building, comprising either or both of the following—

(a)  sub-division of the building with fire-resisting construction;

(b)  installation of suitable automatic fire suppression systems.

It also highlights that all compartment walls and floors should achieve a complete barrier between the compartments they separate, and the appropriate fire resistance must be implemented.

The purpose of fire compartmentation

Fire compartmentation works to contain a fire to its areas of origin for as long as possible.

Despite it being a regulatory requirement, it is sometimes overlooked as an important life safety measure that construction professionals must take seriously.

When the appropriate service penetration sealing products are installed according to relevant test evidence, they provide time for occupants to safely evacuate or wait for rescue, while also reducing damage in the event of a fire.

Simply, it puts those living in the building first.

Getting technical – how is fire compartmentation achieved?

A building’s compartmentation is created by dividing the premises into areas of manageable risk.

This is done using fire-resistant barriers, such as masonry and fire-rated plasterboard walls, concrete and fire-resistant ceilings, and floors.

In our experience, it is doubtful that a building’s compartmentation will remain a solid box due to required openings.

For a home to be habitable, it needs windows, doors, a kitchen, and a bathroom, which require service penetrations like pipes and cables.

These form ‘openings’, which consequently void the fire-resistance rating of the compartment wall or floor.

Due to this, every penetration that breaks the compartment line must be adequately firestopped to reinstate the required fire rating.

This is where test evidence and firestopping products – such as fire collars, fire sleeves, wraps, and compounds, to name a few – will be utilised.

What needs to be considered?

When it comes to restoring a building’s compartmentation, all factors must be considered.

This includes the supporting construction and its required fire rating, the actual service penetration type and material, whether it is insulated, and the thickness of any insulation.

Knowing whether the application is a single or multi-service penetration is also beneficial.

However, it can be challenging to reinstate certain applications’ fire ratings due to insufficient test evidence or mismatched integrity and insulation ratings.

Mayor and Government launch joint board to address London’s cladding crisis

New board established to accelerate cladding remediation in London

The office of the Mayor of London has reported that a new Joint Remediation Partnership Board has been created to speed up the removal of unsafe cladding on residential buildings above 11 metres across the capital.

The board met for the first time on 6 May 2025 and is chaired jointly by Deputy Mayor of London for Housing Tom Copley and Minister for Building Safety and Fire Alex Norris.

The new group brings together City Hall, the Government, the London Fire Brigade, London Councils, housing providers and regulatory bodies.

It has been formed in response to what the office of the Mayor described as the scale of the building safety challenge in London, with more than 1,500 buildings in remediation programmes yet to begin works.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This is a significant step forward in speeding up the removal of dangerous cladding in London, which had been far too slow under the previous Government.

“Everyone deserves the right to live in a safe home – a right denied to the residents of Grenfell Tower.

“I will not stop until we can say with confidence that the failings which led to this disaster will never be repeated.

“I will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Government, London Councils, the London Fire Brigade and the sector to take swift action to remove dangerous cladding on buildings as we continue to build a safer London for everyone.”

Strategy to meet 2029 national remediation target

The office of the Mayor stated that the board will establish a formal plan to align national, regional and local enforcement efforts.

Its purpose is to support the Government’s goal that, by the end of 2029, all residential buildings over 11 metres with unsafe cladding across the UK will either be remediated, scheduled for completion, or subject to enforcement penalties.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities reported that London currently has four times the national average of high-rise homes, and over 1,500 buildings in Government remediation programmes have not yet started work on site.

Building and Fire Safety Minister Alex Norris said: “The pace of remediation has been far too slow and nearly eight years on from the Grenfell Fire tragedy far too many people are living in buildings with unsafe cladding.

“This problem is particularly acute in London, which is why I’m pleased to be working with the Deputy Mayor for London and the Greater London Authority to accelerate the pace of remediation work in London, and ensure residents feel safe and secure in their homes.

“Alongside the London Fire Brigade, London Councils and regulators, we are bringing renewed vigour to tackling long-overdue issues with unsafe cladding in the capital.”

Calls for resources and coordination from borough councils

London Councils has welcomed the creation of the new board but highlighted that local authorities face funding constraints.

Cllr Grace Williams, London Councils’ Executive Member for Housing & Regeneration, said: “Boroughs’ overriding priority is to ensure every Londoner is safe – and feels safe – in their home.

“Faster progress must be made in removing unsafe cladding and it is vital this coalition of key partners help bring together our respective powers, resources and influence to accelerate remediation.

“It is also pivotal that boroughs and our partners have sufficient resources to enforce standards.

“There is currently a massive squeeze on London’s housing budgets, which makes it harder to modernise buildings and address safety concerns, as well as holding us back from building the new housing we desperately need.”

London Fire Brigade supports partnership initiative

The London Fire Brigade has stated that the new partnership will help improve building safety across the capital.

Charlie Pugsley, Deputy Commissioner and Director of Prevention, Protection, and Operational Policy at London Fire Brigade, said: “The creation of the Joint Remediation Partnership Board, and continued support from the Mayor of London, will be key in helping to address the ongoing challenges being faced across London’s built environment.

“We support this action being taken to drive forward the remediation required across London’s high and medium rise residential properties.

“It is unacceptable that leaseholders and residents continue to face such uncertainty and stress, and in many cases, a significant financial burden, due to these buildings with dangerous cladding still not being remediated.

“Those responsible for residential buildings have a legal obligation and we will continue to work with all stakeholders to identify and address the risks to keep Londoners safe.”

Campaigners urge intervention on tower block plans in Bromley

The Fire Brigades Union and building safety campaign groups have written to Sadiq Khan and Bromley Council leader Colin Smith calling for construction of a proposed residential tower block in Penge to be halted.

According to the Fire Brigades Union, the planned building is 17.7 metres tall – 30 centimetres below the 18-metre threshold that triggers a requirement for two staircases under current regulations.

The London Fire Brigade lodged a nine-point objection, arguing that reducing the height to avoid a second staircase is “not ethically justified”.

Fire Brigades Union warns reduced height building could risk lives

Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Steve Wright said the development undermines post-Grenfell safety improvements.

He said: “This is an attempt to cut corners and get around the building safety regulations introduced to avoid a repeat of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

“If the development goes ahead in its current form, residents of this property will only have one staircase which they can use to evacuate.

“This could cost lives.

“It’s vital that Sadiq Khan uses his powers to block this attempt to circumvent the safety improvements that were introduced in the wake of the Grenfell fire.”

Organisations that have signed the letter include Justice for Grenfell, End Our Cladding Scandal, Tower Blocks UK, UK Cladding Action, ACORN, the London Renters’ Union and the Penge Preservation Society.

According to Glidevale Protect, the new Protect FrameFoil FR membrane and complementary Protect FR Foil sealing tape are designed to be used alongside its existing FrameSafe FR external breather membranes.

The company stated that the new system provides a fire rated, airtight, and thermally efficient solution for both residential and commercial buildings, especially those over 11 metres in height and covered by the Building Safety Act in the United Kingdom.

Designed for use across construction types

Glidevale Protect explained that the Protect FrameFoil FR system is suitable for internal application in steel, masonry, and timber-framed buildings.

It added that the system has been independently fire tested both as a free-hanging membrane and in application over A1 and A2 substrates, achieving a Class A2-s1, d0 reaction to fire rating.

According to the company, this rating exceeds the requirements of Building Regulations Approved Document B in England and Technical Guidance Document B in Ireland.

Contributes to thermal performance and airtightness

The company stated that Protect FrameFoil FR features a woven glass fibre construction with an aluminium foil surface.

Glidevale Protect reported that the membrane delivers an aged thermal resistance (R-value) of 0.64 m²K/W when used facing into a still air cavity.

It said this helps enhance thermal efficiency and overall building energy performance.

Glidevale Protect highlighted that the system is intended for use across traditional and offsite construction methods.

Building trust brick by brick: Nigel Morrey talks the future of passive fire protection

Nigel Morrey, Technical Director at Promat, discusses passive fire protection, third-party certification and the long-term shift toward competence and accountability in construction

Nigel Morrey, Technical Director at Promat, has been on the frontlines of passive fire protection for more than 30 years.

His career began with a degree in timber technology and early manufacturing work across Africa and Australia, before returning to the UK and entering the cement and board industry—where he first encountered fire-resistant construction materials.

That initial interest led to a development-focused role in passive fire protection by 1992, working with systems used for compartmentation.

In 1994, he joined Cape, a business specialising in passive fire protection, gaining sector-specific experience in complex environments including marine, oil and gas and infrastructure tunnels.

Since 2002, Nigel has been with the Etex Group, taking on the technical director role at Promat, where he leads technical services and the development of fire protection systems.

He formalised his expertise with a Master’s in Fire Safety Engineering from the University of Ulster and is a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Nigel has also played a significant role in shaping the wider industry.

Through his long-standing involvement with the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP)—including roles as council member, chairman and part of the strategy group—he has been instrumental in raising standards and pushing for third-party certification of products and installations.

Recently recognised with the ASFP’s Lifetime Contribution Award, Nigel brings both deep technical knowledge and a long-standing commitment to competence and quality across the industry.

In this interview, he reflects on the evolution of passive fire protection, regulatory changes following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and what still needs to change to ensure buildings are protected by design, not just by regulation.

You’ve spent over 30 years in the industry. How has passive fire protection changed since you first started?

One of the biggest changes has been the introduction and wider acceptance of third-party certification.

In the early 2000s, the industry began to shift away from unregulated practices and towards certified systems.

This was significant in creating a more level playing field and introducing a reliable baseline for product quality and performance.

Certification also provided manufacturers with a way to validate improvements and helped contractors demonstrate compliance.

However, while the technical standards themselves have always been clear, enforcement has historically been inconsistent.

The issue has not been the content of standards, but whether they are followed in practice.

There were warning signs long before Grenfell—such as the Lakanal House fire in 2009, which resulted in six deaths—but recommendations from those investigations were not acted upon.

It took a highly visible and tragic event to prompt systemic change.

We’ve seen progress with legislation such as the Building Safety Act 2022, which introduces accountability through roles like the principal designer and principal contractor.

These roles need to work together, rather than in silos.

Construction has long been adversarial and part of the shift now is about encouraging collaboration to solve problems early.

We’re also seeing a move away from design-and-build models, which often undermine good specification work and towards traditional procurement routes where responsibilities are clearer.

But challenges remain—especially in transitioning to EN standards and adapting to earlier and more detailed design requirements under Gateway Two.

Following Grenfell and legislative updates, what are your views on recent and upcoming fire safety reforms?

I think the intended changes are largely sound and necessary, but we need to be realistic about the scale and timeframe involved.

The draft regulations, the inquiry recommendations and initiatives like the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) all point in the right direction.

However, the transformation required is substantial and will likely take 15 to 20 years, not two or three.

A major constraint is the skills gap.

Delivering on these initiatives requires a workforce with the right competencies—something that doesn’t develop overnight.

While funding and policy are beginning to address training and education, we’re still early in the process.

Manufacturers also face challenges, especially since only a third of construction products are currently covered by harmonised European standards or technical assessments.

As a manufacturer, we’re committed to initiatives like the CCPI and have already signed up through Etex companies such as Promat, FSi and EOS.

Still, uptake across the industry needs to grow.

One key message is that these recommendations should be viewed as minimum requirements.

Responsible manufacturers should be aiming higher—investing in people, testing, certification and standards development.

At the same time, the industry has to accept that doing fire safety properly will cost more.

This means changing the culture of value engineering and recognising that quality has a price.

What are the biggest challenges currently facing the passive fire protection sector?

The biggest challenge is competence—not just individual competence, but competence across every level of the supply chain.

It’s not enough for someone to sit a written exam.

We need people with the right blend of skills, knowledge, experience and behaviour.

That’s the only way to ensure that systems are properly designed, installed and maintained.

We use the acronym SKEB—skills, knowledge, experience and behaviour—to explain what real competence looks like.

At Etex, we support formal training and provide both standardised and bespoke courses in areas like structural protection, ductwork and compartmentation.

We also encourage learning through on-site experience.

But behaviour is key.

Even the best technical knowledge means nothing if the person doesn’t act with responsibility.

Competence includes having the confidence to challenge decisions when something doesn’t seem right—even if it’s not technically part of your job.

Delivering this takes time and money.

It means removing people from site to train them properly and building in opportunities for ongoing learning.

In our business, we’ve created formal pathways that show how individuals can grow in their roles.

That clarity helps with both recruitment and retention.

A business that invests in training becomes more attractive to new talent and more likely to keep the people it already has.

For this to work across the sector, competence needs to be seen as a strategic priority—and it must be discussed at board level.

With new materials and construction methods constantly developing, how does the industry ensure fire safety keeps pace?

Keeping pace requires closer integration between manufacturers, designers and construction teams.

One of the issues is that many modern methods of construction are being retrofitted into a traditional approach and that rarely works.

For modern methods to succeed—whether 2D or 3D prefabrication—the fire safety strategy needs to be considered from the outset.

At Etex, we’ve approached this by combining our manufacturing capabilities with in-house design expertise.

This allows us to think about systems holistically and develop solutions that consider off-site fabrication and fire performance from the beginning.

We still carry out standard fire testing for individual components, but we’re now also investing in integrated testing.

That means understanding how systems perform when combined—such as partitions, ceilings and steel protection coming together in one assembly.

There’s a practical reason for this.

Much of the industry’s fire testing is based on 2D assessments, but in real life, buildings are three-dimensional.

The moment components meet—whether in junctions, service penetrations or structural transitions—new variables are introduced.

We’re seeing more demand for this integrated testing because clients want to know how everything works together, not just in isolation.

For modern methods to gain wider adoption, fire safety has to be designed in, not treated as an afterthought.

Looking ahead, what do you think needs to happen next to improve fire safety in the built environment?

The next step is better enforcement.

We have standards, we have guidelines and we’re improving on both.

What we don’t yet have is consistent, visible enforcement.

The Building Safety Regulator needs to be more assertive.

That means carrying out inspections, pursuing prosecutions and holding senior leaders accountable when failures occur.

Change will only take root when accountability reaches the boardroom.

That’s where decisions about budgets and priorities are made.

Unless directors are made personally responsible for fire safety failings, we won’t see the shift that’s needed.

This mirrors how the Health and Safety Executive improved workplace safety—by showing that non-compliance has real consequences.

Visible prosecutions and fines forced organisations to take responsibility.

In the end, this isn’t about punishing mistakes—it’s about setting a culture where corners can’t be cut without consequence.

We’re still in a transitional period, with a lot of good intentions and new processes being introduced.

But without strong, public enforcement, these improvements risk becoming just another set of recommendations.

Accountability, backed by real action, is what will drive the next phase of change.

Leadership transition announced by ASFP

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has confirmed the appointment of Sharon McClure as its new Chair, succeeding Clive Miles.

Clive Miles stepped down following a two-year term in which the organisation expanded its influence and membership.

Key developments during his tenure included the launch of the ASFP Office & Academy, new member workshops, and the formation of the ASFP Young Leaders Group.

Progress under Clive Miles’ tenure

ASFP reported that Clive Miles’ time as Chair focused on skills development, innovation, and digital growth within the sector.

The association explained that its increased involvement in cross-sector initiatives included contributions to the Industry Competence Steering Group and the signing of the Conflict Avoidance Pledge.

Clive Miles said: “Two years ago, I spoke of the need to embrace innovation, skills development and digital transformation.

“It’s an absolute honour to take on this role, especially in our 50th year.

“But with this honour comes a great sense of responsibility.”

Sharon McClure sets out strategic direction

In her first address as Chair, Sharon McClure set out intentions to increase collaboration across the construction industry and reaffirm the role of passive fire protection.

McClure stated: “The construction industry is too often driven by conflicting priorities.

She succeeds Clive Miles, who served from 2023 to 2025.

Other developments included the Young Leaders Group and expanded member engagement.

The ASFP took part in the Industry Competence Steering Group during this time.

The Conflict Avoidance Pledge was also signed by the organisation.

Increased UK demand for Category 3 Control fire performance cables

Tougher UK legislation linked to rising cable demand

AEI Cables has reported an increase in demand for Category 3 Control fire performance cables following recent changes to legislation in the United Kingdom.

According to the company, meeting this demand requires effective coordination between manufacturers and distributors.

AEI Cables explained that these cables are critical for powering safety systems such as smoke and heat extraction, which support firefighting operations and occupant evacuation.

AEI Cables calls for industry-wide coordination

Stuart Dover, general manager at AEI Cables, said: “We have seen a rise in the demand for these cables but working together with our distributors we are satisfying our customer needs.

“Together, we can meet the increase in requirements which ultimately make sense for the safety of people and property.

“We offer a comprehensive range of Category 3 Control backed up with our technical support and guidance for these specific uses.”

The company noted that guidance applies to systems including evacuation alarms for disabled residents in care homes, emergency voice communications and voice alarm systems across a range of public and commercial buildings.

These include high-rise buildings, office facilities, hospitals, shopping centres and stadiums.

Standards compliance emphasised under BS8519

AEI Cables stated that it has been promoting the revised Code of Practice under British Standard BS8519:2020 for the selection and installation of Category 3 Control fire performance cables.

It said the revised guidance is designed to reduce the release of harmful smoke, toxic gases and the spread of flame during a fire.

The company noted that its Firetec Enhanced cables are approved and certified by LPCB for both Category 2 and Category 3 Control under BS8519 Annex B.

BS8519 outlines six categories of fire-resistant cables, with three relating to power cables and three to control cables.

Each of the six categories corresponds to a survival time of either 30, 60 or 120 minutes.

AEI Cables supplies certified products to UK and international standards

AEI Cables confirmed that its products are approved by independent bodies including BASEC and LPCB.

The company also holds approvals from the Ministry of Defence, Network Rail, Lloyd’s Register and London Underground.

It added that it manufactures in line with international specifications for supply globally.

Expertise in action: How Global HSE Group coordinates compliance in complex buildings

From regulated qualifications to real-time verification, Andrew Cooper, Managing Director of Global HSE Group outlines their model for joined-up safety in modern high-risk buildings

The complexity of modern construction brings with it the need for better coordination across design, engineering and compliance.

In such a vital sector, fire safety is often treated as a separate task, addressed after other systems are already in place.

This can create delays, gaps in accountability and mismatched standards.

Some businesses are changing this by placing technical specialists’ side by side from the start, Global HSE Group is one of them.

Formed in the early 2000s, the business brings multiple strands of fire and building safety under one structure — including passive fire protection, fire engineering, consultancy, training and manufacturing.

A key part of this model is the Global Technical Services (GTS) division, which handles fire engineering, façade remediation and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and HVAC input.

GTS supports work across high-risk residential buildings, healthcare sites, hotels and more — with the aim of reducing repetition and ensuring different teams are working with the same information.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey spoke to Global HSE Group’s Managing Director Andrew Cooper to discuss how GTS fits within the wider business, how the different teams work together and what this approach looks like on live projects.

Can you introduce Global HSE Group, the GTS division and explain how GTS fits within the wider business?

Global HSE Group started in 2006, though its roots go back to 2002.

We are associated with Global Fire Systems, a privately owned active fire systems firm in Nottingham and London.

After the Regulatory Reform Order in 2005, demand for fire risk assessments grew.

My safety background goes back to the early 90s and as rules changed, we took a hands-on approach to fire safety.

Today, the organisation has five service divisions that sit under the Global HSE Group.

Global Passive Fire focuses on the remediation of passive fire protection in live occupied properties.

Global Technical Services (GTS), is our consultancy for fire engineering, façade remediation and MEP and HVAC input.

We also have Global Build Environments for mechanical and electrical design, Global Academy delivering formal qualifications and Ceasefire, which manufactures third-party certified fire door sets under the BM Trada 170 scheme.

Global Technical Services covers high-risk residential, hotels, healthcare and more.

It gained significance after incidents such as Grenfell, prompting us to integrate disciplines early.

Our goal is to avoid silo thinking and meet the Building Safety Regulator’s requirements through an innovative combined, practical approach.

What kinds of services does the GTS division offer and who typically uses them?

We cover fire strategies for projects from RIBA Stage 0 to 7 through to final handover, as well as remediation to existing buildings.

This reflects ongoing needs in the UK, where fire safety requirements apply to both new and existing sites.

Our work often includes carrying out PAS 9980 assessments and FRAEWs, along with EWS1 forms for external walls.

We recently became a Homes England-approved supplier under the Cladding Safety Scheme.

We help clients with Building Safety Regulator applications, especially Gateways 2 and 3.

That process may become even busier if higher-risk buildings are redefined to include sites with vulnerable occupants.

We also design and specify external façade replacement to meet regulations and calculate MEP adjustments that may be necessary once external issues are addressed.

This joined-up method is a key differentiator for Global.

Our remit extends to existing properties under the Defective Premises Act, where we investigate legacy construction details.

We also deploy Fire Scrutineering, a procedure that validates the developers intent at each design and construction stage.

Our clients include leading contractors, housing associations, PBSA providers, healthcare, and public authorities who need a seamless and joined up approach to compliance.

How does having in-house fire, façade and MEP engineers improve teamwork and complex project delivery?

Having fire, façade and MEP skills in one place speeds up decisions and keeps everyone on the same page.

For example, a façade upgrade might affect compartmentation or require new insulation in the building’s fabric, and our organisational structure allows project teams to quickly collaborate, and provide solutions to complex issues that are quickly reviewed by experts, and presented to the client..

That direct contact means fewer delays and clearer project plans.

We also integrate digital methods, including Near Field Communications (NFC), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling and Building Information Modelling (BIM), in response to rising expectations from the Building Safety Regulator.

A traditional paper-based fire strategy is less effective now.

We need modelling capabilities to demonstrate performance, especially for Gateway 2 applications.

Our team includes experienced individuals who can handle these complex analyses, so we give clients realistic timelines and data-driven solutions.

What is the Global Academy and what gap in the industry are you trying to address with it?

The Global Academy was formed when we recognised many people on-site, such as joiners, passive fire installers or damper technicians, lacked skills, knowledge and formal qualifications.

Short courses often failed to give them official credentials or appropriate training.

To fix that, we partnered with ABBE to write and create regulated qualifications.

We now offer five structured programmes covering fire doors, fire dampers and passive protection, each involving dedicated hours of study and then assessment in the purpose-built academy facilities to validate each delegates skills and understanding of the particular discipline.

There are another four qualifications in the pipeline that are currently being written, so the portfolio will continue to grow.

We then looked at the gap between design and construction, particularly for project managers and procurement teams amongst developers.

Many lacked detailed understanding of technical fire design, and this miss understanding of design intention caused compliance issues when installed during construction..

We responded by developing a new qualification in fire safety design, pitched at Level 3 or 4, and aimed at professionals handling procurement or design responsibilities.

We are rolling this out internationally, with a launch at the IFSJ Leaders in Fire & Safety Conference in Dubai.

Our overall goal is greater competence across the entire construction and fire industry, from concept right through to final installation on-site, and occupational handover.

We also want to drive innovation in the UK construction industry, by bringing home lessons learnt internationally.

How are you applying your services and qualifications internationally, particularly in the Middle East?

We have delivered projects across Europe, Middle East and the US, often for major hotel and hospitality clients who follow specific brand standards.

Although we are not stationed abroad full-time, we have observed that lessons from UK post-Grenfell regulations can apply worldwide, especially in dense urban settings.

Next month, we will introduce an international version of our regulated fire safety design course at the IFSJ Leaders in Fire & Safety Conference.

This qualification is grounded in UK principles, adapted for global requirements.

Many locations now refer to British, US or European codes, so a structured approach to fire safety design holds growing appeal.

We find that clients elsewhere face similar façade hazards and rely on digital workflows.

Our team’s CFD and BIM capabilities help achieve reliable, trackable results.

We work with local authorities and adapt to regional codes, while maintaining the same thorough standards we provide in the UK.

Looking ahead, how do you see GTS developing to meet the changing needs of the industry?

We are expanding our training programmes through the Global Academy, creating courses for more specialised fields like structural engineering and architectural design.

By equipping each trade with fire safety skills, we aim to bridge the gap that often appears when teams try to coordinate details on-site.

These courses will offer recognised and approved qualifications rather than short, informal sessions.

Fire Scrutineer remains an ongoing project, and we plan to link it with broader asset management tools.

We are also aligning Global Technical Services with Global Building Environments, merging fire engineering, sustainability and building assessments in a more unified way.

This will help clients manage records for safety cases, Gateway submissions and occupant communication over a building’s lifetime.

There is a clear shift toward digital platforms that allow stakeholders to visualise hazards and compliance in real time.

We have invested in LiDAR and BIM skills to create fluid records, so owners and international investors can see issues without physically visiting the site.

Our motto is to ‘Do It Right’ at each stage, rather than address shortcomings later.

Harmony Fire secures £2.4 million Ashford fire door upgrade contract

Fire safety upgrade work expands across Ashford Borough Council housing

Harmony Fire has been awarded a new £2.4 million contract by Ashford Borough Council to deliver fire door upgrades across a range of residential buildings in Kent.

According to Harmony Fire, this latest contract follows an earlier £1.2 million award in October for similar work and forms part of the council’s wider fire safety programme.

The upgrades will take place at independent living facilities and multi-storey social and affordable housing blocks.

Procurement through public sector framework enabled accelerated delivery

Ashford Borough Council procured the work through the LHC Public Sector Framework.

Harmony Fire stated that the use of the framework allowed for efficiencies in both cost and scheduling, enabling it to complete the first phase within a five-month period.

The company added that the upcoming works involve the installation of FD30-rated door sets in individual flats and communal areas across nine housing blocks.

Work under the new contract is scheduled for completion by mid-year.
