According to a recent study from market research firm Graphical Research, the Europe Passive Fire Proofing System Market size is projected to reach a valuation USD $7 billion by 2027.

According to Graphical Research, governments are laying down stringent laws and policies to encourage fire safety drills across organizations and residential complexes and so people are also becoming aware of the significance of using fireproof systems, further boosting their installation.

Rhino brings high-performance fire door to market

UK manufacturer of engineered doors, Rhino Doors has completed all necessary fire tests on its high-performance integrity and insulation-rated fire door, following recent successful tests conducted on its single leaf variants.

The doors, which are available in both single and double leaf variants, with or without vision panels, are rated at 90 minutes duration for both insulation and integrity when tested in accordance with EN1634-1.

At only 63mm thick, the doors are designed to be architecturally attractive and technically proficient for use in high-visibility commercial environments.

The results of Rhino’s recent tests saw the radiated heat level (measured at 1,000mm), being 50% lower than the results achieved by the current market leading El door.

As a result, with the launch of Rhino’s new El rated fire door to market, it will offer the best possible protection against radiated heat than any other fire door available whilst still maintaining a useful, traditional integrity rating of 90 minutes.

Commenting on the results of the tests, and the potential industry-wide implications, Group Engineering Director, Dr Chris Norris, said: “It is relatively easy to design and produce an integrity and insulation resisting fire door at 90 minutes or more, if the client is unconcerned with the appearance of the final product.

“For example, the appearance of cross passage escape fire doors along the length of an active rail or road tunnel is often relatively unimportant (because they are not on view) and hence easier to engineer when you are not restricted by how the final door looks.

“Designing a high-performance, insulated fire door to provide >90 minutes protection, whilst still maintaining the appearance and profile of a traditional commercial steel door, is a far greater challenge.

“We’re delighted to have completed this development project, which has allowed us to launch this product to market and, as a result, significantly improve the protection offered to users, compared to traditional, integrity-only fire doors.”

Rhino’s new El-rated insulated steel fire door is expected to go into production this summer.

San Diego County installs ground-based wildfire protection measures

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has agreed a contract with Perimeter Solutions to provide PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY long-term fire retardant as part of the County’s newly approved Roadside Vegetation Management for Evacuation Preparedness Program.

PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY is a ground-based, highly durable fire retardant that is applied on flammable vegetation and cellulosic material one time early in the fire season before a wildfire approaches and provides ongoing protection from wildfire, remaining effective until a significant rain event occurs.

The USDA Forest Service has used PHOS-CHEK long-term fire retardant for nearly 60 years to suppress and prevent the spread of active wildfires.

These new efforts are a result of a board letter introduced by Supervisors Anderson and Desmond in March of 2021.

“Keeping San Diego County residents safe from wildfires is one of my top priorities, and it is critical that we take advantage of new technologies that help us to be more proactive with our wildfire prevention efforts,” Supervisor Anderson commented.

“I’d like to thank County Fire staff, CAL-FIRE, and Perimeter Solutions for working together to apply this fire retardant alongside Wildcat Canyon Road—the connection between Lakeside and Barona that has a devastating history with wildfires.”

Wes Bolsen, Business Director of Wildfire Prevention and Protection at Perimeter Solutions, added: “We are proud that San Diego County has selected Perimeter Solutions to partner with them to help save lives and protect property. We applaud them for their initiative in developing a proactive strategy to prevent wildfires and believe they have developed a model that can be adopted by communities throughout the Western United States and other areas impacted by wildfire.”

San Diego County maintains nearly 2,000 miles of roadway, many of which serve as key corridors for area evacuation and response to wildfires. As wildfire season increases in length and intensity, the risk of wildfire impacting the area continues to rise. In fact, data show that 79% of unincorporated San Diego County falls in areas at high or very high risk of wildfire, and that wildfires have burned more than 40% of the unincorporated area since the year 2000.

Call for property owners to ensure smoke alarms are working in New South Wales homes

New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke has called on residents, landlords and tenants across the state of New South Wales to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home as the death toll from house fires this winter is now more than double last year.

Cooke said that the risk of death in a house fire is significantly reduced if working smoke alarms are installed. “Since the start of June we’ve lost nine people in house fires across the State, which is more than double the entire 2021 winter death toll of four,” she said.

“Fire can engulf a home in a matter of minutes and while smoke won’t wake you up, a smoke alarm will, which could be the difference between life and death.”

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Acting Deputy Commissioner Trent Curtin said it is the responsibility of landlords to ensure there are working smoke alarms in rental properties: “It’s the law for all properties to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on every level of the home.

“Landlords are responsible for the installation of smoke alarms in rented premises. After the tenancy begins, the tenant is responsible for replacing the battery, if needed, in battery-operated smoke alarms. Landlords must replace the batteries in a hard-wired smoke alarm.

“And if you live in a rental property, I urge you to test your smoke alarm and make sure it’s in good working order. If there’s no smoke alarm or it’s faulty, contact your landlord immediately. It may just save your life and that of your loved ones.”

Since 1 June, FRNSW has attended 373 house fires across NSW. Of these, 44 per cent did not have working smoke alarms, while a further 20 per cent did not a have smoke alarm installed.

Why heat and overheat detectors are vital for industrial and hazardous areas

Smoke and fire detectors are an industry standard when it comes to raising the alarm but often by the time they register an outbreak it might already be too late. This is why manufactures of active fire detection systems such as LICO have developed technology that can recognise heat and overheat before it becomes a bigger problem.

Avoiding ignition

Generally in the case of a smoke or fire, a fire security system will alarm any personnel in the proximity allowing them to act, whether this is to extinguish the fire or evacuate the premises and contact the local fire department. The situations in which fire teams are called out are normally, however, the worst-case scenario for when the fire has already taken hold. The preferable scenario is one in which more human lives are saved. The time it takes to mitigate any hazard can be vastly reduced if more focus is put into early heat and overheat detection to prevent a fire or explosion.

Excessive heat, even without the presence of smoke, can be a potential hazard of fire or explosion. The prevention of a potential fire, caused by excessive heat, allows corrective action to avoid igniting flames. Active fire protection expert and heat detector unit manufacturer LICO has several solutions in its wide range of fire prevention devices to ensure early detection.

HDL (Heat Detectors LICO) products are custom made with the customer and/or with the local system integrator. Its devices are designed to cover a wide range of industrial use including: engine rooms, transformer stations, wind generators, saunas, kitchens, painting rooms, gas turbines, off-shore platforms, oil refineries, and nuclear power plants. A simple solution

The sensors in the HDL units are designed with rate compensation, providing a unique advantage over both fixed temperature and rate-of-rise types of detectors. They can accurately sense the surrounding air temperature regardless of the fire growth rate in contrast with fixed temperature detectors which must be completely heated to alarm temperature and therefore a lag in response time may occur with a fast rate of fire.

Böde adds: “Rate-of-rise devices, on the other hand, are triggered by the rate of increase in ambient temperature and are subject to false alarms caused by harmless, transient thermal gradients, such as the rush of warm air from process ovens.”

Merseyside Fire & Rescue launches Home Fire Safety Check tool

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) has announced plans to launch the NFCC’s online Home Fire Safety Check tool for use by residents across the region.

By using the online tool, people are able to explore whether they could be at greater risk from fire. The tool offers help and advice and will automatically trigger a visit from MFRS if a person is noted as being at higher risk.

Fire prevention group manager Mark Thomas said: “As the cost of living increases across the UK, we continue to offer help and advice to keep people safe.

“While we understand the pressures people are currently facing and affordability is a major factor for many, our firefighters and prevention teams will be giving practical help and advice, to help raise awareness and assistance.

“Every day of the year we put prevention work at the heart of what we do here at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

“We are here to help keep people safe and happy in their homes.”

People are being encouraged to make sure they have at least one working smoke alarm on each level of their home – these should be checked weekly.

Suggestions also include installing additional alarms in rooms with electrical appliances or sleeping areas, and that if you hear a smoke alarm sounding you should safely check it out. If you believe that there is a fire, get out, stay out and call 999 straight away

UK homebuilder swings to loss following Fire Safety Pledge

UK homebuilder Crest Nicholson Plc has reported being pushed into a loss in the first half of the year after pledging to fix safety issues on apartments buildings.

The company reported a loss before tax of £52.5 million ($64 million) for the six months through April after recording an charge of £105 million in the half year, according to a statement Tuesday.

The charged wiped out growth in sales and prices as the UK’s new build housing market continued showing no signs of slowing down as rising rates and a cost of living squeeze threaten to damp demand. 

The pledge is a result of the UK’s debate over how to address widespread fire safety failures that were exposed in 2017 by Grenfell Tower fire in London. Uncertainty over who should fund repairs left thousands of homeowners unable to sell their homes and trapped in tower blocks that may be unsafe. 

This in turn prompted the government to seek commitments from homebuilders to help fund repairs, with large publicly traded firms expected to make contributions that will help cover the cost of repairs on buildings whose developers no longer exist or are overseas and unwilling to pay. 

“We are pleased to have reached a resolution with the government by signing the Building Safety Pledge,” Chief Executive Officer Peter Truscott said. “We hope this now provides comfort and assurance to affected residents and stakeholders. It also allows the group to move forward in remediating the affected buildings directly or through another party as soon as possible.”

Crest’s revenue climbed 12.3% in the half year period while home completions rose 7.8%.

Government ‘aware of regulatory confusion’ around combustible material before Grenfell Tower fire – FBU

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called the latest report into the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, released to the public today, “massively significant” evidence.

The FBU said that the report details previous cladding fires which can be viewed as missed opportunities to prevent Grenfell, and Building Research Establishment (BRE) failures around them. It also builds up a picture of BRE only doing work within contracts, and only specific things – close to client and government demands – within those contracts.

The report, written by Professor Luke Bisby, a professor of fire and structures at Edinburgh University and an expert witness to the inquiry, details the flaws with the BRE – the government’s former safety research and testing body that was privatised in 1997 – which was responsible for testing many of the cladding, insulation and other building materials used in the Grenfell refurbishment.

Bisby’s report concluded: “What emerges from this overview of the development of England’s building regulatory environment, and the major cladding fires that have occurred during the same period, is a picture of increasing freedom for industry…”. He also highlights a “profound lack of competence of actors” including the BRE [both page 253] and “powerful commercial and ideological objectives” to increase flexibility for industry.

The Fire Brigades Union said that many of these flaws can be explained by the privatisation of BRE and the creeping, increasing influence of the private sector in the BRE in the years running up to the completion of full privatisation.

Mark Rowe, Fire Brigades Union national officer, said: “Professor Bisby’s report details multiple failings on the BRE’s part in the run-up to Grenfell, failings which were caused – fundamentally – by private ownership and the increasing encroachment of the private sector. It is massively significant.

“We are clear: the BRE was not, and is not, fit for purpose, because it is privately-owned. It is vital that the BRE is taken back into public ownership and run for the public good, not profit.

“In the run-up to Grenfell their status as a private company meant that they were dependent on fee income from clients, such as Grenfell manufacturers. This made them too willing to please clients and too reluctant to challenge them or the information they provided. The BRE’s private status also meant it did not share information as it should have done, and there were basic failures of competence in vital areas.”

What is the report about?

The FBU breaks down the report, which is centred around Building Research Establishment failures, mainly in relation to key cladding fires:

Regarding the Knowsley Heights fire in 1991 the BRE “had a significant organisational incentive to enable overcladding solutions whilst being seen to mitigate their fire risks – rather than prohibit their use” (page 253), with the BRE having significant “reputational investment” here (p100), and the failure to “properly interrogate the key issues” here is “tragic” (p99).

According to Bisby the BRE report has a “striking absence of any explicit discussion regard the degree to which the GRP rainscreen product may have contributed fuel to the fire” (page 98). The GRP rainscreen product was later found to have contributed to the fire (also page 98). 

Bisby includes a handwritten note detailing a Department of Environment press office request to BRE to “play down the issue of the fire” (p104).

Following the Garnock Court fire in 1999 there were “surprising oversights” made by the BRE with regards to a lack of investigation of cladding and other materials, and possible implications for building regulation (p125). “It is not clear” why a later, more detailed set of reports was not properly communicated to government or Parliament by BRE (page 136).

Around this fire there was an insight into how BRE worked and prioritised work: “We are a private sector organisation; we are not part of government. Clearly, in days gone by, when we were part of DoE then this work was done and would have been done in the public interest without the need for formal contract. One regrets there are now commercial pressures that require clients to place formal contracts with us before we can undertake work.” (BRE comments to the select committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs, page 131).

A BRE report on the Lakanal House fire “contains very little insight” into the roles of combustible materials in and on the walls in the fire’s development. Bisby expresses surprise that there was a lack of comment around the external fire spread at Lakanal (from p186 – para 1046, 1049, 1052, 1055, 1058) and the questions this should have raised in relation to building regulations.

The “BRE “External Fire Spread” Reports (2014-2016) are in places incomprehensible, and they appear to lack in any real insights or practical significance” (page 229).

As early as 2017 the BRE – as well as government – was aware of regulatory confusion that would later help lead to combustible material being used in the Grenfell refurbishment, but “it appears that little or no action was taken” by the BRE “to seek to highlight or mitigate this confusion or the resulting significant hazards” (page 255).

Warringtonfire study finds new fire hazards in residential care homes

Warringtonfire has completed the second in a series of three studies at the request of the Flemish Government, that focus on the fire safety in residential care buildings.

Pieter Poppe, Project Manager of the second study, also called the VIPA2 study, and Head of the Consultancy Department of the Institute for Fire Safety (ISIB), said: “We wanted to identify the effectiveness of smoke control measures by means of five large-scale fire tests and additional CFD-simulations (CFD: Computational Fluid Dynamics) as part of the evacuation strategy for non-self-reliant occupants of a residential care building.”

The results of the VIPA2 study revealed new ways of considering fire safety for more vulnerable members of society, such as citizens who reside within care buildings. Since common areas within these buildings can currently include combustible materials (e.g. kitchens, sofas, etc.), a possible fire hazard is inherent in these evacuation routes. This risk is currently not considered within the concept of the current (Belgian) fire safety regulations.

“The VIPA2 study has scientifically demonstrated the effectiveness of different kinds of applications of a smoke control system in a residential care building,” explained Poppe. “This kind of smoke control system is not only limited to residential care buildings, but can also be applied to all types of structures with similar geometry. Such application is not mentioned in any normative document related to Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilation systems (SHEV-system) and is therefore very innovative.”

This research, completed by Warringtonfire has informed a further third study, the VIPA3 study.

On the next study, Poppe said: “In the VIPA3 study, an assessment framework has been developed where minimum fire safety measures are determined as part of the evacuation strategy (i.e. immediate evacuation or Defend in Place) in case of non-self-reliant occupants of a residential care building. These fire safety measures can be active (e.g. residential smoke control system, fire screen, automatic extinguishing) or passive safety measures (e.g. fire resistant door, smoke control door, fire resistant damper).

“The effectiveness of the applied fire safety measures has been demonstrated through large-scale fire tests and additional CFD simulations (CFD: Computational Fluid Dynamics) as described in the VIPA1 and VIPA2 studies.”

The three studies will act as crucial stepping stones in creating a safer and more secure future for non-self-reliant individuals, by potentially guiding future regulations.
