Rosenbauer to build vehicles for firefighting and disaster protection program

Rosenbauer has fought off competition from across Europe to win through as preferred bidder for two major tenders in Germany. In early January, the Federal Ministry for the Interior placed an order for 61 standard LF-KatS vehicles on behalf of the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), with an option to upgrade this to as many as 182 vehicles. They are part of a multi-annual procurement program in the course of which Rosenbauer has already delivered 308 vehicles of the same design. The last of these were handed over in March of this year. 

Last year, the State Office for Internal Administration of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania concluded a contract concerning the supply of 265 TSF-W vehicles with Rosenbauer Deutschland. It was the state’s largest fire truck procurement initiative in its history, funded by the state government’s “Future-Proof Fire Service” program, which was launched in 2019.

All-rounders in Efficient Technology
The LF-KatS firefighting vehicles are designed as all-rounders and are used for firefighting, pumping water over long distances and providing basic technical assistance. The extinguishing equipment consists of a permanently installed N25 firefighting centrifugal pump (FPN 10-2000 in accordance with DIN EN 1028), a 1,000 l water tank, a quick-attack unit and manual pressure outlets. To supply water over long distances, a portable fire pump is located in the front equipment compartment. A hose delivery system with 15 B-hoses is also installed here. On the roof is a box with a ladder fixture, a lowering device for the spare tire and a manually operated light mast, while the equipment compartments accommodate a lowering device for breathing apparatus and a heavy-duty slide tray for the fire service accident and tool kit. The vehicles are loaded with the standard equipment kit in accordance with DIN 14530-8; the equipment is provided by the end customer.

As an independent tactical unit, the LF-KatS vehicles have enough space for a full crew (1+8). All seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts and a helmet holder – two with holders for SCBA. The vehicles sit on an all-wheel-drive chassis from Mercedes-Benz (Atego 1327 AF 4×4) with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 14 metric tons. They are manufactured in the Radgona plant in Slovenia, Rosenbauer’s center of competence for vehicles in the ET (Efficient Technology) series.

Compact basic vehicles
The TSF-W portable pump vehicles are also multi-purpose vehicles that are used for rapid first attacks in firefighting operations and in the provision of technical assistance. They are produced at the Neidling plant in Lower Austria, Rosenbauer’s center of competence for compact vehicles. They sit on chassis frames with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 7.2 metric tons (Iveco Daily 72C18) and are equipped in accordance with DIN 14530-17 (Equipment for a pumping appliance). The superstructure houses a 1,000 l water tank and FOX portable fire pump stored on an inclined pull-out holder (PFPN 10-1000 in accordance with DIN EN 1028), which can be operated both within the vehicle and outside. Continuous LED strips in the roof trim on the left and right as well as a pneumatically extendable light mast provide powerful illumination of the surroundings. The docking cabin has room for a crew (1+5) or brigade unit, and four seats are equipped with holders for SCBA.

“We are delighted with the two major orders with a combined value of around €46.5 million and see them as an endorsement of our outstanding partnership with the German fire service and disaster protection organizations,” said Ronald Reisinger, Managing Director of Rosenbauer Deutschland. “The two vehicle concepts are also attracting major interest from other customers, and we’ve already received a number of additional orders for identical LF-KatS and TSF-W vehicles.”

HAIX’s history of supporting firefighters with dedicated fire boots

Many companies claim to be a ‘family business’, but few can be as confident when they say this as global functional footwear expert HAIX®. Innovations in firefighter safety: Telemetry, Technology and Connectivity

International Fire and Safety Journal had the pleasure of speaking with Aurélie Favre – MSA Marketing Manager First Responder, and Kevin Tomkins – MSA First Responder Specialist UK & Ireland, to find out what we can expect from the webinar, and why new innovations are vital for crew safety.

What can we expect from the upcoming webinar?

AF: “I think you can expect to be given some in-depth detail on MSA’s vision on the future of firefighting. It will provide some educational perspective to our audience, and it will explain the foundation of the connected fighter eco-system that MSA wants to go in to. We have tried to give an overview of what connectivity and Breathing Apparatus telemetry is so the audience can understand some of the technical details that are hiding behind each piece of equipment.”

KT: “It is a deep dive in to the detail of telemetry, technology and connectivity, and it’s really from the perspective of the firefighter, the command officer in charge and the fire chief. From those three perspectives, we’re going to show them how this can fit in to their life and how it can serve them.” 

How long has this new connected fire fighter solution been in the making?

AF: “This type of technology and eco-system has taken a long time to develop because it involves a lot of software development and new equipment which has to stay intuitive and most importantly, reliable. Here we designed a new SCBA called M1 and all the connected eco-system around. From the perspective of MSA, this project really started with the G1 SCBA and the success with this has been huge since it has been released to the North America/NFPA market.”

What is the driving force behind the project?

AF: “The reason we wanted to continue this project and introduce more technology and connectivity in the UK is because the region is one of the most advanced countries that already use or require telemetry enabled systems. We believe that by adding connectivity as a second layer to telemetry systems, we will help to improve the safety of crew members.”

KT: “Our customers have identified what we call the safety gap. Ultimately, they are the ones that are driving the technology. It’s MSA’s engagement with the end user and working together with what we call voice of the customer and collaboration that has helped us to develop a solution. It’s not just a great idea from us, it’s what our customers have asked us to do and that has really driven this forward.”

What are some of the benefits for the fire services?

KT
: “Data can teach us a lot. For example. after an incident happens to get a report quickly is something that just doesn’t exist anywhere in the world, certainly not in the UK. That is just post-incident, we can also measure the firefighter as an individual, the equipment, time, air performance, alarms and so much more. When a chief gets this information, they can look at that and achieve better benchmarking, team performance and base lines they want to achieve. There are so many areas they can dig in to, to see how they can move forward in a better and improved way.”

AF: “From a maintenance perspective, the fire service can improve the way they save and aggregate their data. We still see a lot of fire brigades who use spreadsheets to manage their inventory and maintenance scheduling. Connectivity and better software will enable brigades and technicians to improve the way they schedule, run or predict maintenance and allows them to have access to vital data at any time, anywhere right after an incident has happened.”

Is this the future of firefighting?

KT: “Absolutely. It is already changing the way they think about firefighter safety and how technology can underpin that improvement. Without doubt fire services are seeing that technology in the moment is helping improve firefighter safety, and technology of the future is helping safeguard firefighter health.”

AF: “Overall, connectivity shall be seen as a modern tool to simplify firefighters job in a world where the digital stakes are already high, a peace of mind to execute their tasks in order to keep them safe in the most dangerous situations”.

NEBOSH launches new fire safety qualification

NEBOSH have announced the launch of a new Certificate in Fire Safety qualification, which aims to help learners develop practical fire safety skills that can be used to protect people, buildings and business.

The syllabus covers a broad range of topics including the principles of fire and explosion, how to identify fire hazards in the workplace and the controls that can be put in place to reduce risk. The qualification, which is suitable for low to medium risk workplaces, offers businesses a great way to build in-house fire safety expertise.

Dee Arp, NEBOSH Chief Operating Officer said: “The qualification’s content and assessment aim to help learners gain practical skills and knowledge. The two-part assessment consists of an open book examination and fire risk assessment practical. Both give learners the opportunity to practice what they have learnt so they can immediately make a positive contribution to fire safety in their workplace.”

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety will replace both the current UK and International NEBOSH Certificates in Fire Safety and Risk Management.  It can be studied from 1 May 2021 through NEBOSH’s global network of accredited Learning Partners.

FRNSW Places Second Order for XFlex PPE

Following the successful delivery of more than 5,000 sets of high-quality structural firefighting PPE from specialist manufacturer MSA Bristol and its Australian distributor Pac Fire, Fire & Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) continue with their roll out and expect to have an additional 5,000 sets of XFlex PPE delivered by June this year. The expectation is that FRNSW will compete the rollout to all of its 6,500 firefighters by December 2021.

FRNSW is one of the world’s largest urban fire and rescue services and the busiest in Australia with more than 6,500 firefighters spread across 335 stations, attending around 120,000 call outs per year.

An extensive evaluation and wearer trial in 2019 led to FRNSW selecting MSA Bristol’s popular XFlex PPE ensemble for its PPE upgrade. This process allows garments to interact with inventory management and laundry systems, tracking physical location and the condition of the item throughout its service life.

Perimeter Solutions introduce new fluorine-free firefighting foam

Perimeter Solutions have announced the introduction of a new line of fluorine-free firefighting foam concentrates for general purpose use. Called SOLBERG® VERSAGARD™, the fluorine-free line debuts with SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100.

SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 multipurpose 3×3 fluorine-free firefighting foam concentrate is an alcohol resistant, state-of-the-art pseudoplastic foam technology designed for extinguishing and securing both Class B (hydrocarbon and polar solvent liquid fuel) and deep-seated Class A fires.

This biodegradable and non-persistent concentrate is made with no siloxanes and is a combination of hydrocarbon surfactants and additives that delivers excellent foaming, vapor sealing, extinguishment and burnback properties using fresh, sea or brackish water. Some fluorine-free firefighting foams are viscous and often show viscosity increase when in contact with water.

SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 creates very stable foams while keeping a similar viscosity to traditional AR-AFFF foams. This significantly improves storage, handling and long-term stability. SOLBERG VERSAGARD enters the market with a growing number of international certifications, including EN-1568-1/2/3/4:2018, LASTFIRE, ICAO B and International Maritime Organization.

According to Javier Castro, General Manager for Perimeter Solutions Fire Safety Group, SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 is an example of the continuing technology innovation by the company in the area of fluorine-free firefighting foams. “At Perimeter Solutions, we’re engaged in an intensive development program for fluorine-free technology that meets the highest level of fire suppression requirements,” he said.

SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 is designed to generate stable foams with high fluidity and slow drainage. This novel technology allows SOLBERG VERSAGARD to perform similarly to fluorinated products. It may be used with low expansion foam equipment (nozzles and monitors) and medium & high-expansion foam discharge devices to fight fires involving Class B hydrocarbon and polar solvent fuel fires.

It is fully compatible and easily proportioned with standard firefighting equipment, including in-line inductors, self-inducting nozzles, fire truck pumps, bladder tanks, pump skids, balanced pressure systems and more.

In addition to its excellent foamability and bubble stability, SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 has excellent wetting ability, making it also an effective tool for the extinguishment of Class A fuel fires.

Multiple Certifications Demonstrate Effectiveness

Dräger to supply PPE to emergency services

Specialist personal protective equipment from Dräger, an international leader in the fields of medical and safety technology, will now be available to all Emergency Services and Blue Light organisations in the UK through a new framework agreement with public sector procurement specialists, YPO.

The Emergency Services and Blue Light framework agreement specially covers three lots: firefighter helmets and associated products (lot 6); ambulance technician helmets and associated products (lot 23); and decontamination solutions (lot 12). It includes fully-leased managed service options.
